The FDA Should Approve Over-the-Counter Sales of All Birth Control Pills

The FDA might soon give access to a type of birth control pill that has been available only by prescription since 1973; in fact, today, an FDA panel voted unanimously to make birth control pills available OTC. But here's a catch: women will only have access to one brand of one kind of birth control pill, a progestin-only pill sometimes called the "mini-pill."

Unlike regular birth control pills, which contain two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, the mini-pill doesn't affect milk production in nursing mothers and is less likely to cause blood clots in women who smoke. To put this in perspective, pregnancy is more likely to cause clots than any pill to prevent it.

But, the mini-pill, while it may be slightly safer to use than other birth control pills, has drawbacks.

For example, the mini-pill only works if women take it at the same hour daily. If they take it more than three hours late, women must use another contraceptive for the rest of the month and start the cycle again. The same is true if they miss a day. With regular birth control pills, if women miss a day in the cycle, they can take two pills the following day.

While better than the status quo, the FDA shouldn't restrict women's OTC options to safer progestin-only pills, not to mention one progestin-only product. Unlike regulators in, say, Portugal, Brazil, or Mexico, the FDA doesn't think American women can weigh the risks and benefits of various birth control pills and decide which is best for them—even if reproductive specialists believe they can.

Further mitigating drug-related side effects is that women may be more cautious than doctors in choosing the best drug for themselves. A 2006 study asked women to self-assess birth control pills. Ninety percent of the time, doctors agreed with their assessment, and 10 percent of the time, women were more conservative than doctors.

I had such a good reading month!

I finished War & Peace, I didn't even know I could do that.

Blue Exorcist Vol. 2 by Kazuo Kato - A manga series recommended by someone I follow on YouTube, I wasn't sure this series wasn't for me, however the more I get into it, the more I enjoy it. The story of a boy who realises his dad, well more finds out his dad is the devil after his mentor is killed by him, he then joins an academy to learn how to fight with his brother. I feel like reading it is by far better than any description I can give to be honest but I do recommend it!

Amari And The Great Game by B.B. Alston - One of the best middles grade series right now, the Amari and The Night Brothers books are so good. Amari continues to be a strong and brilliant character and the plots are gripping even for an adult like myself. Middle grade books now are some of the most diverse and exciting stories right now in my opinion and this series is certainly proof of that.

Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid - I've always loved stories where the characters are straight forward and honest with the reader, and no one is more honest and direct to the reader than Lucy, our protagonist. The story of a young woman who moves in with a couple as she begins to figure out her life, it explore life, love, sex, and packs it all in perfectly in so few pages.

Another Day In The Death Of America by Gary Younge - A book that has been on my TBR for way too long, this book tells the story of 10 young people who were killed by guns in the US in the cycle of 24 hours. Thoughtfully written and emotionally impactful throughout, the stories of these young people are profound and heartbreaking. If you can handle this book, please do, it's beautifully written and deeply researched and shines a light on the gun control issues that America faces today.

The Barmy British Empire by Terry Deary - I have always loved Horrible Histories, and this book really does convey honestly how bloody awful the colonial past of the British empire was and really should be compulsory reading for anyone old enough capable of reading it. Though I have also read 'adult' books on the impact of colonialism, this is a great place to begin and a book that doesn't shy away from the cruelty of empire, not just from Britain but also Belgium and Portugal.

I finished playing Golden Rose: Book One

And I only have one question: when will there be a book two?

If you don't know what the game is, it's a medieval dystopia where you will play in a text based app. Each choice will affect your character and the text will react accordingly.

I loved the story. Got confused sometimes by all the descriptive texts and the interludes but things made sense as I read it further.

But I absolutely looooooved the fact that I kept playing and at each choice I would check my status to see how my character's atributes were changing. And that made the whole experience more immersing.

I'm the kind of player that would most definitely drop a game because the graphics were awful.

But My friend recommended it to me and I thought "not my cup of tea, but let's give it a chance".

And BOY, what a delightful surprise!!!! I didn't try this option, but it seems you had the option of chosing a name for your character if you didn't like the names they offered. I chose Arya. And it started at Baiae. And it all will only make sense once you close the cycle by getting to the end of the book.

The images bellow are my status i the middle and at the end of the game. So you can see how it changeed. (Thanks Hadrian, for making me pious and emotional!!! 😆).

I wish I could have several save slots, so I could replay without losing this.

I wonder if book 2 will take our book one atributes into consideration so we play with what we achieved.

Once we compare this game to the other visual novels and choices games, you see just HOW complex this game dynamics are. How many games can you list that would change your character atributes, relationship AND the text will react accordingly to your choices? Because I can list several that have only one timeline and our choices don't really matter...

Since the author took several historical instances as facts of the story. Some things got me feeling a little reflexive.

The first that screamed to me was the "Portuguese galleon". I have a Portuguese friend and we discussed several things of the Moor's occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, the Roman colonization of the area know as Portu Calle(Galia?), the Celtics, and how Lion(Leão) gave this fief to a vassal that was very important on conquering Iberia back from the Moors. As payment or recognition for the act... it's been too long ago... the talk I mean. So the eldest country in Europe seems to be Portugal, as the others were formed, fusioned, conquered, and founded after it. Portugal was founded in 1147. And I understand that the recognition of the area as Portugal only begun in 1139. Before that I believe it might have been known as Galian's Port or Port of Galia, or Galia.

Well, the story starts in 68 AD and our MC starts around 1068 AD. And when I read about a Portuguese galleon I started to think if that was right... shouldn't it be referred to as Galian galleon then?

And this got me thinking if the "Italia" part was really called that at the time too.

Then it came to the Aurelius' room with his "shelves full of books". In a time where books were extremely expensive and rare, the monasteries had several of them because they produced the books. And the amount of people that could read was very little. Lol! At the time, not all nobles could read, many couldn't. And that's why decrees were glued to walls and read out loud on public squares. Gutenberg only invented the press in the 1600s and that's what made books cheaper. Knowing that put a smile on my lips as I read about Aurelius' books. In my country we call this creative freedom. And that's beautiful to see.

Hello, I'm the exchange student from yesterday, thank you for your reply!

I'm actually already a Master's student, I'll just be taking my last year of uni in Portugal through the Erasmus program.

I'm glad hearing there's "older" people joining Praxe as well, since it's meant for caloiros I though it was mostly for kids aged 18-19, but I'm glad it's not weird for slightly older students to join, makes me less nervous about giving it a try.

Even though I'm technically a Master's student, I'm gonna be enrolled in both 2° and 1° cycle classes, so maybe I'l befriend some actual caloiros and tag along them. I do a speak a bit a Portuguese and my mothertongue is a romance language, therefore I'm not gonna be completely lost, but it does get hard when people talk fast or use a lot of slang - but after all it's a way to immerse myself in the language and improve (and if it turns out to be too much I can just stop going to Praxe :p)

So yeah, I'm gonna check it out and see how I feel about it!

Oh awesome! Honestly, personally, I didn't love all of it and there's some aspects I really don't like about praxis but it depends on each university and even school within it as they all behave differently and have different activities (for example some play games, some do beach cleanups, some go to bars, some make you do stupid shit for fun and some are abusive) but I always say "go and try it, see if you like it and if you don't hit the road"

i obviously don't know all of them and can only speak from my own experience but you'll make awesome friends along the journey either way trust me <3 and if you need any tips let me know!

Ten Global Cities Named Winners of the Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure.

In recognition of World Bike Day on June 3, Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced the first-ever winners of the Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure (BICI), with ten global cities receiving support to build innovative cycling infrastructure and sustainable mobility options for their residents. The goal of BICI is to help cities design streets that increase biking rates, revitalize neighborhoods, and promote the health and well-being of their communities. Led in partnership with the Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI), in addition to funding to enact their proposals, each winning BICI city will receive technical assistance from GDCI on project development, cycling facility design, data collection, and resident engagement.

Successful cities need transportation systems that allow people to move safely, efficiently, and sustainably. Research consistently shows that providing cycling infrastructure brings social benefits that far outweigh its initial investment and that people who cycle are healthier and happier. However, a significant barrier to cycling in many cities is the lack of safe cycling infrastructure. BICI is designed to help city leaders meet the urgent need to build more connected and expansive cycling infrastructure that serves as many residents as possible.

The 10 BICI winners are: Fortaleza, Brazil—winner of a $1 million prize—and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Bogota, Colombia; Lisbon, Portugal; Milan, Italy; Mombasa, Kenya; Pimpri-Chinchwad, India; Quelimane, Mozambique; Tirana, Albania; and Wellington, New Zealand, each of which will receive $400,000 in funding.

“Fighting climate change goes hand-in-hand with giving people more transportation options,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies and 108th mayor of New York City. “These proposals to make cycling safer and more accessible will require robust technical assistance, and our team is glad to support the winners as they turn their ideas into action. The progress that these 10 cities make will help clean the air, protect the environment, and drive economic growth, too. We’re looking forward to seeing the results.”

“Cycle lanes aren’t amenities, they are essential infrastructure for cities,” said Janette Sadik-Khan, Transportation Principal at Bloomberg Associates and former commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation. “These grants will help these 10 cities take the decisive action necessary to transform streets and turn the corner on traffic violence, pollution and climate change.”

The 10 winning BICI cities named today hail from 10 countries on five continents and collectively represent more than 15 million residents. Winners were selected from 275 applications submitted between November 10, 2022, and February 3, 2023, from cities with over 100,000 residents.

The 10 winning projects include:

Fortaleza, Brazil (winner of the $1 million prize): Develop 180 kilometers of cutting-edge cycling infrastructure to invite more community members to cycle.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Double the number of protected cycle lanes to achieve Africa’s largest city cycle network.

Bogota, Colombia: Co-design new infrastructure with children to revitalize a low-income neighborhood and engage young residents.

Lisbon, Portugal: Roll-out new solutions to increase the diversity of residents cycling throughout the city.

Milan, Italy: Build sustainable, green cycle lanes that connect over 40 schools.

Mombasa, Kenya: Protect and connect a cycle network along key corridors with high cycling volumes.

Pimpri-Chinchwad, India: Launch a neighborhood model for a 15-minute city, starting with cycling.

Quelimane, Mozambique: Build new cycling infrastructure that includes protected cycling lanes, pedestrian space, and unique bicycle taxi parking to support non-motorized travel.

Tirana, Albania: Create an all-ages cycling network through the implementation of safe intersection design.

Wellington, New Zealand: Increase the number of bike lanes in the city by 160 percent using resident input to inform planning and development.

“When it comes to reducing emissions and promoting healthier, greener cities, we must keep raising our collective ambitions,” said James Anderson, who leads the Government Innovation program at Bloomberg Philanthropies. “The Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure gave cities around the world the chance to dream big and show what’s possible—and these winning projects demonstrate the extraordinary ideation that this opportunity has unlocked. We look forward to working with these global cities to implement their powerful projects, and as we do, share lessons with their peers worldwide.”

“Building safe, connected cycling networks is a universal need that benefits people’s physical and mental health and well-being, just as much as it benefits the environment and the economy,” said Skye Duncan, Executive Director of GDCI. “Through their ambitious cycling infrastructure projects, the selected cities will transform their streets by putting people above all else—while benefiting their local communities to ensure healthier, safe, and more equitable spaces for everyone. Bloomberg Philanthropies will convene the 10 winning cities from June 26 through June 29, 2023, in London, providing an opportunity for those city leaders to meet, trade ideas with peers, begin their project planning, and learn from GDCI’s urban design experts.

China’s Growing Influence In Latin America

Since 2000, legal, economic, and social ties have gradually strengthened between China and many Latin American nations. This has contributed to a more widespread theory of a multipolar international system as China signs more bilateral free trade agreements with Latin countries. Over the last few decades, China has increasingly become the most important trade partner of many Latin American nations, nearly paralleling the United States, with tens of billions of dollars in investments. China has funded development projects, such as hydroelectric dams, mining operations, oil digs, and animal-processing factories that have since been called out as “corporate abuses.” [1] There could be legal environmental ramifications as the United Nations Council for Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights is now involved. [3] Many nations, such as Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, and Bolivia, have brought grievances because of the alleged abuses of indigenous lands. The International Federation for Human Rights has also called attention to a violation of human rights standards by Chinese businesses operating in the area. [4] In China, the president’s anti-corruption campaign has imprisoned or killed over a million Chinese citizens since 2012, without due process. There is a clear motive for centralizing power at the expense of legal rights and economic growth. [8] This should be alarming for the many nations that have ties with and who let Chinese companies operate in their countries. Additionally, China is giving loans that create a dependency on foreign aid. The region has a long history of foreign investment that leads to this cycle of dependence, dating back to the independence movements from Spain and Portugal in the nineteenth century. Relationships with China and the Latin American nations further strengthened from 1960-2010 as the West sought to impose neoliberal economic policies on countries such as Mexico and Argentina. This control by Western powers in the 1970s led Latin America to turn to China as an alternative to American and European control.

China’s economic power in the Latin American region is not to be underestimated. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is China’s infrastructure program that expands across the globe, and further expands Chinese power. The BRI lacks legal enforcement mechanisms for human rights. [5] It also poses issues with various jurisdictions as the BRI connects Asia, Africa, and Europe. The BRI must have a basis of the rule of law to assure international public goods for the participating countries. [2] Sustainable development is crucial for indigenous groups and many people are waiting for these countries to take a stand against Chinese operations and conditions. Many non-governmental organizations are filing suits claiming human rights abuses in countries like Argentina, Brazil, and Ecuador. These NGOs say that the abuse is systematic and is destroying areas of national cultural and social importance. China is accused of neglecting these extraterritorial obligations to protect human rights in the countries they operate in. These obligations are enshrined in the International Covenant on Social, Cultural, and Economic Rights, which was signed by China in 1998, yet still not ratified and codified into China’s national law. [6] The issue of human rights abuses is an issue of international law as China may have industry standards, yet it lacks the legal jurisdiction to deal with offenses. The regulation of Chinese companies overseas is complicated by law and domestic jurisdiction. [6] Legal organizations claim that China should integrate international human rights law into its national law to govern foreign investment and programs. This disconnect is the cause of discord between human rights groups and Chinese businesses in the last few years.

In various countries, China is welcomed and supported among Latin American nations as a buffer to U.S. intervention and domination. [7] Chinese diplomatic ties have served as the foundation for strengthening other ties and led to the severing of ties with some Western nations. China denies the International Court of Justice’s jurisdiction which will make it hard for ensuring accountability for their business practices. Democracy is not China’s priority, and this will inevitably lead to human rights crises. Rule of law and democracy in Latin America function as a pendulum, as the government operates with intertwined democratic and authoritarian ideals. Latin American law is based on code law, not case law, which creates the idea that constitutions are seen as ideal and a norm to strive for, yet not a necessity. Presidential power is often more important than constitutional provisions, which is like China and its ruling party. When a country’s constitution can be easily undermined, individual rights may be supplanted, which is what is happening as China moves into the region. Global leaders and the United Nations should pay attention to China’s involvement in the region as further conflict may arise in the future.
