Kineema Key

No one else in the shelter was awake. Only Kim. He sat by the fire, deep in thoughts, feeling for the key in his pocket. A simple key with a leather-wrapped keychain, with every notch familiar to his fingers. Cool metal quickly heated up from touch. The key belonged to his Coupris Kineema. Kim never dared to check the place where he parked her last time; looking at ruins, surrounding their shelter, did that place still exist? He wanted to keep the image of Kineema as she was the day he left her. The dear smell of leather interior, the windows covered with raindrops, the shiny metal with RCM markings - a memory of what is lost forever. She had almost no chance of surviving the apocalypse and there was only one way to find out.

"Get a grip, Kitsuragi," he muttered through his teeth, clutching the key tightly in his hand, "After all the scars life has left on you, can't you survive another one?".

There was no answer. Only the fire crackled, throwing sparks into the night.

Now let me write you an essay

So, I think that both HDB and JV are more similar to each other than is shows at first glance, they are both very sensitive (only one is hiding it well under a bitchface and snarky comments) and their work is slowly killing them, plus, especially in Harry's case, Jean has his coping mechanisms for that (ekhm, anger), probably being hated by society for his job where he technically is supposed to help them, only adds to it.

In the post-apo scenario, both the society and the RCM disappear and with them a great source of both Harry's (and Jean's) problems. Of course, there will be all stages of grief at the beginning, and probably some sort of survivor guilt, but eventually he would come to terms with the fact that it happened and they are still here and will manage to deal with it. Maybe even have some fun, because if everything's gone and there is nothing worse that can happen besides death (and such an event probably reevaluates one's sense of the value of own life) and your only goal is to survive to the next day and try to make the most of what you've got... (I agree very much with the comments under that post about Jean, post-apocalyptic worlds are an escapist fantasy, you can do whatever with no consequence, and your life goals become very basic, primitive even)

I feel like at the end of the day Jean would just enjoy his solitude and simple life goals, and Harry... There is a chance that a literal apocalypse would be an event shaking enough to give him a new point of view on life itself and have a sort of "carpe diem" arch. I can see him trying to get the absolute maximum of the time he is given with his two best mates and a dog.

As for Kim, I think that the beginnings would be very hard for him, and would break him in a way. His life was quite all about the work, and now he suddenly doesn't have any goal and everything he cared for is gone... so it's time to get into survival mode. Paradoxically I think that would make him get along with Harry and Jean much better, he would be able to relate to those two broken dudes more. I think that Kim would be the one who will lack some sort of a bigger goal the most, but he will manage. He's not a quitter and he would probably eventually set his goal as "keeping these two here alive".

ANYWAY, this AU is meant to be a silly and light one for me to play (and have some rest from EOE deep analysis), so I could dig deeper into the psychological consequences, all the potential traumas and problems, but that's not the point (let's see how long can I hold back lol) i just wanted a scenario where they will be relatively happy and it's not my fault it takes an actual apocalypse :shrug:

I'm up to discussing anything about this au anytime tho, give me all your silliest thoughts to munch on

if harry's survival specialty is scavenging for food then what do you think jean and kim would be best at?

yesss Harry is good at finding food and generally finding things like clothing or some useful garbage, because Jamrock Shuffle babe!

I think Kim would be great at tinkering, making something out of nothing, his years of torque dorking and hours he spent with his nose under Kineema's hood are paying off now! He probably did some tuning to their weapons too.

And Jean, I think he could be good at hunting if they actually happened to meet something that could be hunted, I've always seen him as a good shooter. And his incurable optimism of course, brightens everybody's day up! (No but for real I think his doomer sense of humor would fit in the setting quite well)

At the risk of my my feels getting their shit rocked, who else is still alive in the Postapo Disco Inferno AU? Any side stories? Other people living around there? Or nah? (Still loving all your art by the way. <3 )

Another question that took me a moment, because. Hm. I can't even say I never thought about this, but every time I do, I come up with different conclusions lol

So to sum this up somehow, I think that there must have been some other survivors for sure. Martinaise is not a representative part of the city anymore, so I think they were not on the main line of fire, so people there could be relatively safe, I suppose? Or at least had a chance to try and run away.

I am torn between "there were actually some survivors but they moved out and those three (four with Dolores) just couldn't get themselves to leave Revachol" and "almost nobody except them survived (they were just extremally lucky), all the Isola is thrashed and they have nowhere to go plus they love the city too much to just leave her". The latter would be a much sadder scenario, but probably, as a post-apocalyptic setting, making more sense, so I'm kind of leaning toward it? Because if everything is in pieces and there is no other place to be and no other thing to do, it's completely justified for them to just wander across the ruins of the city and try to survive and make as much of what they have, as they can. But huh who knows maybe they will suddenly bump into a group of other vagabonds that will happen to be old friends, I really don't know. Worldbuilding in this AU is poor and I'm not even trying lmao but if something more pops into my head I'll tell. (And I'm really glad to hear that you like my art <3 tysm!)

Idk if it matters but I really like the name Postapo Disco Inferno AU! Did you know that Apo in tagalog (Filipino language) means grandchild, so my brain keeps calling it 'Post-Grandchild Disco Inferno AU' and then connecting it DE's 'girl child revolution' reference bit, even though I know it was probably unintentional, and 'apo' is actually just shortening of 'apocalypse' (which I also love bc apocalypse fiction my beloved obvs), it still makes me smile. <3

Ahahaha thank you, and I love it?? It's very unintentional indeed, I think "postapo" isn't even a word in English, but it sure is in my mother tongue as an official genre name and it's shorter and everybody understands, so. The Tagalog accidental touch only makes it better <3
