It’s been a day of printmaking, including two special prints going to collectors who were the winning bidders in our Eyewitness MSF fundraising auction in conjunction with the wonderful James Lewis and Bamfords Auctions. Rufus. Sometimes a name so perfectly suits a dog that you have to give props to the owners. Rufus was such a goof. You wouldn’t be able to tell from this picture but he did not want to sit still. His tongue was out and flapping most of the time. This peaceful and beautiful picture is kind of a lie. But that can be the wonderful thing about photography (It can also be really bad but not going to get into that debate here). Anyway, in this instance the “lie�� is a great thing. Sustaining all life on earth is the theme of this year’s UN World Wildlife Day.  I’ve been processing and enjoying some photos in the archive recently and decided to share this one. This tortoise is native to the Galápagos Islands and the most famous of the animals to be found there - with the name of the islands being named after the creature.  Sadly, it’s an endangered species, down to exploitation by whalers, and fur sealers amongst other things. It is estimated there are around 10 of the 15 species left and around 20,000 in number. Background Synopsis

In this weeks assignment, the final reflection of the life journey Siboniso Sifiso Vusumuzi Kubheke shared with us, I will include my experience in creating a reality for “Siboniso Sifiso Vusumuzi Kubheke”. I’ll share how I managed to name the character and create a reality for him. I will also include a brief description of how photography has the potential to change everything.  

Creating this character named, Siboniso Sifiso Vusumuzi Kubheke was an extremely demanding task for me because as an African, names are of great importance in ones life. They are somehow a cornerstone of someone’s life. They form the bases and quality of the dreams, hope and desires the child’s parents have for their descendant. In that moment I decided to name the character Siboniso Sifiso Vusumuzi Kubheke, which means ‘We set our hearts on you our leader to bring us hope and prosper in expanding and upholding the Kubheke family name’. The complexity and profundity of the thought that came with creating that name made me feel so proud to be African. Proud to be effortlessly expressing the rich deep heritage of Africa.

The intensity of emotion and detail I had included in created the characters name actually made it to difficult to create his reality as my personal wish was to give a thick description of him living his truth and also living up to his name and making the wishes, desires and dreams of his family become a reality. It was really difficult because looking at the picture, a sense of an individual struggling to keeping a grip on his life and his self identity was all I could read. Trying to create a clear cut description of his reality, I realized that the confusion and complexity I was stuck within could actually be Siboniso’s reality. The fact that as an African child, you are subliminally required to live up to your name. Exemplify the name while upholding its deep heritage, definitely leads to the burdensome for individuals like Siboniso to live in their truth, be liberated in any life decision and effortlessly express their true self.

In that sense, I then managed to created Siboniso’s struggle of his self identity and the life possibilities that could hovered to these struggles. An ability to provide possible solutions to Siboniso’s everyday struggles were then shared in correlation to the day to day activities he participated in order to have a create a sense of a normalcy to his life. To make the story line more interesting, I added a plot twist that expressed how enslaved Siboniso’s spirit was after he experienced a life changing incident with some young girl in his neighborhood. The encounter created a new reality for Sibonsio. I drove the idea so much that I ended up perplexed myself. What he had experienced with the young girl wasn’t a normal experience nor was it expected to bring about feelings of overwhelming happiness. “In the normal world”, Siboniso’s experience is anticipated to make one depressed and maybe leading to a broken, abusive man. Sibonsio on the other hand, loved the feeling that came with the experience and even fed into the feelings that was sparked up.

The brief description of how photography has the potential to change everything. Photography has the power to change how we drag out to see in the picture. It has the power to change what we are prepared and willing to see and believe from the reality created through looking at the picture. It has the power to change a social reality and cultural hierarchy of people in the picture. Most importantly photography has the power to tell the untold story.

I hope the work of art that I created arouse curiosity, catching your attention, providing a perception of life that could be possibly experienced by hundreds of people out there. I’d publicly recommend people to live in their truth, be liberated in all aspects of their life and effortlessly express their true self as nothing beats that.
