THURSDAY HERO: Princess Alice

Amazing story! Princess Alice was an unconventional royal who prioritized helping others over wealth and privilege. She devoted her life to good deeds and spiritual growth, and was notable among European royalty for taking Jews into her home during the Holocaust.

Princess Alice stood out for another reason: she was deaf from birth.

Born in 1885 at Windsor Castle, Alice was the great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. She learned to lip read at a young age, and could speak several languages. Alice was widely regarded as the most beautiful princess in Europe.

At age 17, Alice fell in love with dashing Prince Andrew of Greece and they were married in 1903. Alice and Andrew had four daughters and a son. Their son Philip would later be married to Queen Elizabeth II. Alice communicated with her children mainly in sign language.

Political turmoil in Greece forced the royal family into exile. They settled in a sleepy suburb of Paris, where Alice threw herself into charitable work helping Greek refugees. Her husband left her for a life of gambling and debauchery in Monte Carlo.

Relying on the charity of wealthy relatives, Alice found strength in her Greek Orthodox faith. She became increasingly religious, and believed that she was receiving divine messages and had healing powers. She yearned to share her faith and mystical experiences with others, but instead was dismissed as mentally unhinged.

Alice had a nervous breakdown in 1930. She was committed against her will to a mental institution in Switzerland, with a dubious diagnosis of schizophrenia. Alice did not even get a chance to say goodbye to her children. Her youngest, 9 year old Philip, returned from a picnic to find his mother gone.

Alice tried desperately to leave the asylum, but was kept prisoner in Switzerland for 2 1/2 years. During that time, her beloved son Philip was sent to live with relatives, and her four daughters married German princes. Alice was not allowed to attend any of their weddings.

Finally, in 1932, Alice was released. She became a wanderer, traveling through Europe by herself, staying with relatives or at bed & breakfast inns. In 1935, Alice returned to Greece, where she lived alone in a modest two bedroom apartment and worked with the poor.

The Germans occupied Athens in April 1941. Alice devoted herself to relieving the tremendous suffering in her country. She worked for the Red Cross, organizing soup kitchens and creating shelters for orphaned children. Alice also started a nursing service to provide health care to the poorest Athenians.

In 1943, the Germans started deporting the Jews of Athens to concentration camps. Alice hid a Jewish widow, Rachel Cohen, and her children in her own apartment for over a year. Rachel’s late husband, Haimaki Cohen, was an advisor to King George I of Greece, and Alice considered it her solemn duty to save the remaining Cohen family.

Alice lived yards from Gestapo headquarters. When the Germans became suspicious of her and started asking questions, she used her deafness as an excuse not to answer them. Alice kept the Cohen family safe until Greece was liberated in 1944.

After the war, Alice founded her own religious order, the Christian Sisterhood of Martha and Mary, and became a nun. She built a convent and orphanage in a poverty-stricken part of Athens. Alice dressed in a nun’s habit consisting of a drab gray robe, white wimple, cord and rosary beads – but still enjoyed smoking and playing cards.

In 1967, after a Greek military coup, Alice finally returned to Great Britain. She lived at Buckingham Palace with her son Philip and daughter-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II.

Alice died in 1969. She owned no possessions, having given everything to the poor. Before she died, Alice expressed a desire to be buried at the Convent of Saint Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, but instead was laid to rest in the Royal Crypt in Windsor Castle.

In 1988, almost 20 years after she died, Alice’s dying wish was finally granted. Her remains were sent to Jerusalem, where she was buried on the Mount of Olives.

In 1994, Alice was honored by the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem (Yad Vashem) as Righteous Among The Nations. Her son Prince Philip said of his mother’s wartime heroism, “I suspect that it never occurred to her that her action was in any way special. She was a person with a deep religious faith, and she would have considered it to be a perfectly natural human reaction to fellow beings in distress.”

Could you please do some tiara predictions/wishes for the upcoming British State Visit? Thank you!!!

I don't think we'll see any big surprises but I would love to be wrong.

Queen Camilla - I'd like to see her wear the Girls of Great Britain & Ireland again. I was very pleasantly surprised to see her wear it for her last tiara appearance but it was tilted a little too far back for my taste. She normally has excellent tiara placement so I think it's just a matter of this being a new tiara for her.

Princess of Wales - Queen Mary's Lovers Knot Tiara is a beautiful tiara but I'm kind of tired of it and really of Catherine wearing pearls in general. I think I'd like to see her bring back the Halo Scroll Tiara with a good updo and colorful accompanying jewelry. I just don't feel like we were able to properly appreciate it with the veil and everything going on.

Princess Royal - I really want her to wear the Double Meander Tiara again but a more likely choice would be Princess Alice's Meander Tiara.

Duchess of Edinburgh - I want her to wear her Anthemion Tiara again because I want to see better pictures of the updated arrangement. We got great pictures at the first incoming state banquet of King Charles's reign but Sophie wore her Aquamarine Necklace Tiara so I hope the good pictures continue.

Duchess of Gloucester - For some reason I was thinking of the Iveagh Tiara as I was trying to go to sleep last night so I'll go with that. It's such a beautiful and easy to wear tiara. I'm really sad that it was inherited out of the mainline of the family and can only hope that somehow it makes it back.

Princess Beatrice VA, CI, GCVO, GBE, RRC, GCStJ (Beatrice Mary Victoria Feodore; 14 April 1857 – 26 October 1944), later Princess Henry of Battenberg, was the fifth daughter and youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Princess Beatrice was also the last of Queen Victoria's children to die, nearly 66 years after the first, her elder sister Alice.

Empress Alexandra Feodorovna with Queen Alexandra of Great Britain, 1909.

Before being known as Empress of Russia, Alexandra was formally named Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine. Her mother, Grand Duchess Alice of Hesse, had ties to the British royal family by her mother, Queen Victoria.

She also had a son named Alfred, who was the Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha. He married Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna, whose brother Emperor Alexander III would later have a son named Nikolai II that would become Tsar decades later.

Princess Beatrice is already a doting mother to daughter Sienna and a stepmother to her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi''s son Wolfie, whom he shares with his ex Dara Huang, but she had another reason to celebrate this week.

The royal's close friend Alice Naylor-Leyland announced that she was "so grateful" to welcome her "miracle" fourth child with her husband Tom Naylor-Leyland via surrogacy. The little girl, whose name has not yet been revealed, joins Alice's older three children: Billy, Nancy, and Felix.

Next to a snap of the newborn's foot poking out of the bottom of a white lace-trim dress, Alice opened up about her difficult journey to expand her family, including her miscarriages and fertility issues.

She wrote: "Welcome to the world little one. It’s been a journey to get you into our arms but we are so grateful you are here.

"I’m aware it was greedy to have this burning desire to complete our family, but due to too many complications, setbacks and miscarriages & then being told I was no longer able to carry, we decided to venture down the world of surrogacy.

It’s been a bonkers journey but now we’ve arrived, I can’t wait to enjoy every minute. Thank you to the love, kindness & support of ALL who helped bring our miracle into this world."

Reese Witherspoon and Millie Mackintosh were among the stars to share their congratulatory messages in the comments section, but it's likely that Alice's friend Princess Beatrice is also privately offering her support.

The friends have been pictured enjoying each other's company on numerous occasions, including leaving the private member's club Loulou's in 2015 and attending a party for Alice's brand Mrs Alice in 2022.

Alice has made some rare comments about her children, including admitting that she has learnt a lot of her style tricks from her mother – and hopes to pass what she's learnt down to her daughters.

"I also love the immaculate style of Old Hollywood actresses, such as Catherine Deneuve. And, of course, my mother was hugely inspirational. She has incredible style and is very aesthetically minded. A mother usually passes that onto her daughters," she told Harper's Bazaar.

Alice, whose husband is heir to one of Britain's land-owning dynasties, and Beatrice may share parenting tips now they have both embarked on motherhood journeys. While Beatrice remains tight-lipped about her children, Edoardo's stepfather David Williams-Ellis has praised the royal couple's natural parenting abilities.

"I'm hugely fond of my stepson," David exclusively told HELLO!. "He's a great supporter and a great character. As a father, it's family first for Edoardo and he's an amazing father to both his children. I've seen it first-hand from a really good angle."

Today, 145 years ago, Princess Alice of Hesse (née Great Britain and Ireland) died of Diptheria 🖤🕊️

“Alice and the doctors nursed the family round the clock. On the morning of 16 November, Marie choked to death from the membrane covering her throat. Her mother, awakened by the doctors, hurried to the nursery, only to find her daughter dead. Alice sat by her daughter's body, kissing Marie's face and hands, trying to work up the strength to tell her ill husband. She watched as Marie's coffin was wheeled off to the family mausoleum. For weeks, Alice concealed Marie's death from the other sick children, who asked about her and tried to send their little sister oys. Elisabeth, who had been sent to stay with her paternal andmother, was the only child who escaped infection. The sick children were finally told at the beginning of December that Marie had died. Ten-year-old Ernst-Ludwig first refused to believe the news and then broke down in tears. His mother hugged and kiss him, despite the risk of infection. On 7 December Alice recognize the symptoms of diphtheria in herself. She died on the morning 14 December, murmuring "From Friday to Saturday -- four week-- May -- dear Papa." Alice was interred beside her daughter.”

Kings Landing, the place where the Targaryen live. Rhaenyra and her family came back to kings landing to defend the rights of her son Lucerys Velaryon, they are currently in Rhaenyra and Daemon's Chambers when suddenly a bright light blinds them and they disappear, In another part of the castle the same happened to the Greens and the king, After the light, they all look around the strange room with confusion, the queen quickly guide her husband to a nearby sofa, Daemon walked around making sure there was no danger around them when he saw a table with pictures of a young girl holding a puppy, he quickly grabs it went back to the room were his family is "Look what I found" he said as he gives the frame to his wife, Rhaenyra confuse grab the frame and look at it "What is this and who is this?" she asks, her son entered the room from another entrance "Mother you should see this" Confuse both adults follow the younger boy, Alicent curiously followed them with her children behind her. They stopped in front of a wall with different pictures" It looks like they are the owners of this place" Jacaerys explains to his mother.

Meanwhile, in the streets of Somerset, Britain a girl with pink curls is seen walking with a black and white great dane next to her, she stopped next to a sweet shop and looks down at her dog "Sit...stay good girl" Aphrodite smiles and entered the shop. Later on, Aphrodite is seen in a cafe with expensive bags surrounding her chair, and Titan sitting down people-watching. Aphrodite decided to finally go back home after seeing that it was now nighttime, waiting for her butler to pick her and Titan up, A few minutes later Aphrodite is in the car with her butler Rusell "How was your shopping Miss?" he asks, his eyes on the mirror watching as she pets Titan "It was good" her Butler Eric smiled and paid attention to the road. Back in town, the lights of all the stores flicker. The car stopped in front of a gate door waiting for the door to open. Aphrodite got out of the car with some bags in her hands Titan followed her owner with a mini bag hanging out of her mouth.

Daemon put a finger on his lips when he heard a door being opened, everyone in the room stayed quiet as they listen. Hand in the handle of his sword Daemon walked closer to his wife and children, Aemond following his uncle's steps got closer to his mother and sister. Aphrodite keeps walking towards the living room unaware of the danger standing in the room. Titan smells a lot of new scents in her home she quickly ran to the living room making her owner fall.

Hearing a thump the two Targaryen men already had their swords ready. Suddenly a big four-legged creature ran into the room and the person who was closer, which was bad luck to be Otto Hightower "Father" Queen Alicent screamed out before they made any new movement a young girl ran into the room and stopped when she saw people she didn't recognize, quickly taking her taser out she pointed it at them. Everyone in the room stares at her making her more nervous "Who the hell are you?!" Titan quickly got off the man and ran to her owner standing in front of her in an attack position.

Aphrodite looked at everyone one by one "I say who the hell are you all?!" she screamed getting more frustrated "If nobody answers in two minutes I will call the police" Princess Rhaenyra saw how the girl was shaking and step out behind her husband, her son Aegon III in her arms "My name is Princess Rhaenyra and we just appeared in this place" Aphrodite pointed her taser to the voice and relaxed a bit when she got an answer "Princess? what do you mean you're a princess? and how the hell do a bunch of people appear in a room without explanation?!" Rhanerya passed her young son to his brother and moved a little bit more to the girl still aware of the beast in front of the young girl.

Eric heard the young girl scream and quickly ran to the room and paused when he saw the situation "Eric thank god you here, I enter the room and suddenly this group of white and brown chocolate-headed people is standing in front of me, and I pretty much know that Titan gave the one in the floor a concussion" Aphrodite quickly say. Eric just stared.

"Sir Eric, what are you doing here?" Queen Alicent asked the man who still stand still "Sir Eric what the hell do you mean sir eric and how the fuck do you know his name" Eric quickly shook his head "How are you all here" he ask and Queen Alicent just shake her head "We have no idea we just appear here" Eric nodded and look at Aphrodite " I never thought this day would happen" Aphrodite looked confused and look at the man "What are you talking about Eric, how do you know these people" Eric whistle getting Titan attention and making the big dog stand down but still cautious "I know them because they come from the same place I came from" Aphrodite looked confused and look between the group and her butler "What they came from your mother?" Eric shook his head "Miss Aphrodite they came from Kings Landing" Still confused the young girl stared at him "Is that what you called your mother Hoha?" Eric just sigh "I meant to say that they are not from this era, they along with me do not belong in the year" He explain.

"what you mean you don't belong in this year, then what year do you belong in... the 1800s" the girl joked but saw the seriousness of the man "Wait you actually saying that you belong in the 1800s?!" she ask now more nervous "Not exactly that year" "Then what year exactly you belong!" Aphrodite said with her voice higher "The year 100bc" Aphrodite shake her head and stepped back 'Youre lying...this has to be a joke...where is the camera?!" she started looking around when suddenly a pair of hands grab her shoulders and turn her towards the people who look at her strangely "There no camera miss Aphrodite just look at their clothes...hair and how they stand" the teen just look at them and turn to her butler and looked at his eyes "oh my god your not lying" the butler just shakes his head "I-I need a moment...maybe an hour...good night everyone if you all real...because I think I'm hallucinating...this has to be a dream" The girl walked out of the room.

Once she was out of the room they turned to Eric who sigh. Upstairs Aphrodite looked down at the people on the balcony that stare out into her living room "Oh you guys are still there" Looking up the group saw the girl who just shake her head and walked away "Please forgive her...she needs time to understand, now who knows how long you all staying so ill take you to your rooms and tomorrow morning Ill get some change of clothes for all of you" Everyone followed Eric.

Hi so this is a repost bc I didn't like the original chapter and storyline so I change some stuff, originally Aphrodite's parents were going to be time travelers but I didn't like that idea so I changed it and I actually like this storyline so much better.

Many of those millions, like me, have gotten to know the Queen as a human being and wife and mother and monarch through watching "The Crown." All of us Crown viewers learned that Queen Elizabeth didn't have an easy life. May she rest in peace.]

Her Mother-in-Law Saved Jews During the Holocaust:

The third season of The Crown features a Greek-speaking, tough talking nun. Shockingly, that nun was Queen Elizabeth II’s mother in law, Princess Alice of Battenberg. Even more surprisingly, The Crown never explores Princess Alice’s heroism during the Holocaust, when she saved Jews by sheltering them in her home in Nazi-occupied Athens. It’s an amazing story that ought to be known.

Born in 1885 in Windsor Castle - where Queen Elizabeth II now lives - Princess Alice was Queen Victoria’s great granddaughter. She was deaf - a fact that the royal family hid - and learned to lip read as a child. Historians have speculated that this might have made Princess Alice more sensitive to other people who were different from the mainstream in some way.

When Alice’s brother Edward was crowned King Edward VII in 1902, one of the guests at his coronation was a dashing Greek prince named Andrew. The two fell in love and married. Alice moved to Greece where she had four children: three daughters and a son, Philip (Queen Elizabeth II’s husband). The family was riddled with dysfunction. Alice’s husband became a dissolute playboy and eventually moved away. Her three daughters all became ardent supporters of Hitler and each one married senior Nazis. Only her son Prince Philip resembled her, eschewing Nazism and spending time with Jewish friends and his British relatives.

When World War II broke out, Prince Philip volunteered for the British navy, and battled Nazis with distinction. Princess Alice resisted in more secret ways. Remaining in Athens, she invited the Cohens, a distinguished Greek Jewish family with whom she and her husband had long been friends, to hide in her house. Rachel Cohen, her daughter Tilde, and her son Michel moved in with the princess. The apartment was small and located just yards from Athens’ Gestapo headquartered. Once, Princess Alice was even brought in for questioning, but she refused to divulge the fact that she was sheltering Jews in her home.

After the war, Princess Alice founded an order of nuns. She returned to London in 1967 and died there in 1969. She requested that her remains be interred in Jerusalem, and in 1988 they were buried on Mount Zion in Jerusalem.

Queen Elizabeth II Hired Jewish Mohel to Circumcise Prince Charles:

Queen Elizabeth II hired an Orthodox Jewish mohel to circumcise her son Prince Charles. Rabbi Jacob Snowman (1871-1959) was a London mohel of great renown, and it’s said that the Queen was impressed with Rabbi Snowman’s skill and experience.

The tradition of British royals to ask Jewish mohels to circumcise their sons goes back to King George I, who was born in Hanover, Germany, and reigned over England from 1714-1727. Back in Germany, some aristocratic parents hired Jewish mohels, and George I brought the custom with him to England. Years later his great great granddaughter Queen Victoria hired Jewish mohels to circumcise all of her sons. She is said to have believed that her family tree went directly back to the Biblical King David.

Coincidentally, Queen Elizabeth’s mohel Rabbi Jacob Snowman had another royal connection: his younger brother Emanuel Snowman was chairman of Britain’s renowned Wartski jewelry dynasty, which sold wedding rings both to Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and to Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

British Jews pray for the Queen every Shabbat:

It’s a Jewish custom around the world to recite a prayer on Shabbat for their government leaders. In Britain, this means praying for the welfare of Queen Elizabeth II and her family. British Jews ask God to “preserve the Queen in life, guard her and deliver her from all sorrow.” The prayer goes on to ask that the Divine “put a spirit of wisdom into her heart and into the hearts of all her counsellors” too.

She Departed from Royal Protocol to Listen to Holocaust Survivors:

While Queen Elizabeth II seems notably cool towards the Jewish state, when it comes to Britain’s Jews recent years have found her conciliatory. The royal family has shown a particular interest in the welfare of Holocaust survivors of late.

On January 27, 2005, the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Queen Elizabeth hosted a group of Holocaust survivors in St. James’s Palace in the center of London. Notably punctual, on this occasion the Queen threw protocol to the wind. As she mingled with the survivors, one of her aides informed her that it was time to wrap up the event.

Instead, the Queen continued to talk, to listen, and to reassure. Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks was present and later recounted: “When the time came for her to leave, she stayed. And stayed. One of her attendants said that he had never known her to linger so long after her scheduled departure. She gave each survivor - it was a large group - her focused, unhurried attention. She stood with each until they had finished telling their personal story.

“It was an act of kindness that almost had me in tears. One after another, the survivors came to me in a kind of trance, saying: ‘Sixty years ago I did not know if I would be alive tomorrow, and here I am today talking to the Queen.’ It brought a kind of blessed closure into deeply lacerated lives.”

In January 2022, Prince Charles commissioned a royal series of portraits of Holocaust survivors. “As the number of Holocaust survivors sadly but inevitably declines,” he explained, “my abiding hope is that this special collection will act as a further guiding light.” The portraits are to be displayed in Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth II’s official home.
