anyway i will always trust and respect native speakers’ usage of their own language more than anyone who tries to police how others speak, or who deems variations in dialect “incorrect/improper” because it’s different from how they personally speak, especially since the history of language policing is chock full of racism, classism, and xenophobia
#i have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this#like in haiti the majority of not the entire population speaks haitian creole#but after the french colonized the country and established french as the primary language of the region creole has been disregarded and cut#out of schools and academic and government institutions#this has caused a major decline in literacy and writing ability for haitians since they aren’t being taught in a language they speak#many of them feel that creole is an inferior version of french and that it’s a broken language but it isn’t#it has its own rules#it’s own grammar#and many sub dialects in different regions just like in english and russian and spanish and every other language#this internalized idea that it’s inferior though has left native speakers feeling limited in their self expression and their ability to#engage in professional or governmental activities#this has also led to a major poverty gap#linguistic oppression is real. the barriers and tangible results of this bias are real#stop acting like thinking some forms are language are just superior to others is okay or justified#it does real world harm#this also applies to aave and mexican spanish and sign language and every other form of language that is invalidated and stigmatized#if i am a native english speaker then how i speak it is not incorrect#because it’s MY language#my entire understanding of language#how my brain formulates thoughts and makes connections and interacts with the world#was founded on my native tongue#so i don’t need some polished white upper class academic to tell me that i’m using it ‘wrong’

Shooting Star Accident Part 1 (Polarity AU, 657 words, self-insert reader) You ask Polar Moon about a thing you heard and you share a small moment of comfort. No CWs this time around! It's all quite chill and soft.
You approach the rescue bot with a slight smile, but you can't hide the curiosity that is hidden under it. There has been this thing that has been bothering you. You've heard other workers talk about it. An event? Or maybe something else. You aren't sure what it is. It almost feels like a code name of sorts people used to hide the true nature of what it meant.
"Something on your mind, little star?" Polar's eyes are fixed on you, but his gaze isn't intense. It's gentle, like a soft, warm blanket you want to be under. His head is tilted to the side, and it makes the tall figure look almost adorable. In your opinion, anyway. Not that you'd feel comfortable saying it out loud.
"Yeah, actually." You admit, and rub the back of your neck. There is no subtle way to ask about it. You have to be direct. It's probably nothing important, but your curiosity is getting the better of you, and you take a breath before speaking out once more. Your eyes glance briefly at his.
"What is the shooting star?" You ask, your look shifting down. "You know. The thing people keep mentioning every now and then? They never told me, so I thought maybe you'd know." You glance back up and hold your gaze as you notice Polar's expression shift. It's a slight change, but one that is still noticeable. He's frozen in place as if lost in his thoughts. There, but oh so distant. That phrase clearly meant something to him, but you weren't sure whether the memories attached to it were good or bad.
"Kuu?" You call out his name, and that seems to be enough to snap him away from his thoughts. A small smile forms on his faceplate, but it feels off. You can tell he's not happy.
"We don't speak about the shooting star accident." Kuu finally says and places his hand on top of your head. He moves it in a gentle, soothing motion. But instead of soothing himself, he's soothing you. You wonder why, but you have a lingering suspicion that it might be because he doesn't know what else to do. From what you've seen, he's the kind who finds it easier to help others. Even when he's unwell himself. That's definitely one way to distract yourself. You're quite familiar with it yourself, in fact.
"Oh. I'm sorry." You mumble, smiling up at him. "I won't ask about it again if it's an uncomfortable topic for you." You feel a bit of guilt tugging at you for prying into things that weren't your business, and Polar's response wakes a feeling of concern. Not to mention, he called it an accident. Something happened. Something that even Kuu wouldn't talk about. Still, you want to keep your word and decide not to push the topic further, no matter how curious you are. He could talk about it when he was ready. Today wasn't the day, and that was okay.
You extend your arms and lean in to hug him. A wordless gesture of comfort. There isn't much you can do if Polar doesn't want to talk, but you want to do at least something small to show you care. It seems to make Kuu stop briefly before he slowly brings his own hands around your waist.
"Thank you." Quiet words leave Polar in a whisper, almost as if it's not something he wants to say aloud. Or maybe he's just not used to it. You aren't sure how he's feeling, but you can imagine it's not easy for him either way. The silent moment of comfort lasts for a bit before you lean back, and the both of you continue your tasks as if nothing happened.
When you turn to catch a glimpse at him, you can notice a hint of a genuine smile on his faceplate. It makes your chest feel warm.
