Girl help I found Chinese subs for that one Purple15 moment in which Ren accidentally unmuted during break and Illumina silently listened. And Ren said: “Our doggo is doing exceptionally well for our first MCC with our brand new doggy”, and—

The Chinese translator interpreted it as Illumina being the “brand new doggy” because it was Ren’s first time teaming with him.

Which, I guess, grammatically makes sense— but I think the English fandom heard it as “Our doggo is doing exceptionally well for our first MCC, with our brand new doggy”, as in Ren emphasising Obi is his new dog and he’s behaving well in his (Obi’s) first MCC with Ren. Which isn’t grammatically accurate, but hey that’s vernacular English for you, and we all understand what he’s talking about. Ren also continues to talk about Obi afterwards, so from an English speaker’s perspective, both “our doggo” and “brand new doggy” refers to Obi.

(Context: Ren talked about his dog in his HC8 E3 (5 July 2021) and Obi’s appeared in streams since late June. MCC15 was 24 July 2021 and MCC14 was in May so Obi’s first MCC was MCC15.)

But from a non-native speaker’s perspective (translator’s perspective), the sentence itself “Our doggo is doing exceptionally well for our first MCC with our brand new doggy” implies there are two dogs, with the doggo doing well with the new doggy. And since the clip is from Illumina’s POV, the translator naturally assumed the second doggy was referring to Illumina lmfao.

But you know what the catch is? Illumina isn’t Ren’s only new teammate. With this logic, Martyn also qualifies.

… So I guess in the Chinese sub, it’s canon that Ren calls his new teammates “new doggy”. Yay for translation!

Ngl 3rd life made such a huge impact that when the MCC Highlights channel introduced Purple Pandas 15 in a team trailer, they straight up just took a clip from Martyn's video of Ren calling himself the Red King

I think one of Aqua29's (H, Dave, False, Cub) best qualities is that they were an extremely forgiving and consistent team

(I know the MCC just happened, but my brain is going crazy right now and all the details are flying past my head but I hope you'll get the general idea.)

MCC's nature is that it is unpredictable. That's what makes it fun! The chickens, the weird lag (sometimes 💀), luck, sudden clutches, etc etc. But this unpredictability can sometimes mess up teams on a really good trajectory. One "bad" or "unwanted" game would kill a team's morale- I've seen that before.

In the midst of the MCC chaos, Aqua29 is very solid. They were steadily climbing up the ranks and kept their morale high. Even when they won one round of Dodgebolt, they convinced themselves to act like they "were losing". I forgot the English word for it but their mental states / attitudes were very consistent throughout the entire MCC. This helps them power through the unpredictability. Especially for MCC29, which is a well-balanced MCC and pretty difficult to predict (and the stats don't do False and Cub justice in this particular situation).

As I said before, Aqua29 is very forgiving. This allows them space to make mistakes and to bounce back. Dave felt pretty guilty over dying to speedbridging in Sky Battle and said he really usually doesn't do that, and while the loss of the team's best PvPer might be fatal in some other situations, Aqua honestly did fine. Their morale wasn't affected.

In Rocket Spleef Rush, sometimes a teammate would die "early", leaving two teammates behind, and it felt like they took turns dying early, which showed how balanced they were. Same with TGTTOS. Sometimes an individual teammate might get unlucky in a round of TGTTOS, but overall they all worked hard, and they could pull it back.

Battle Box would be another good example, in which they lost the first two rounds, adjusted their strategy, and then did better. Dave also apologised for missing the comms during the round against Purple, but like SkB, they progressed normally.

In Grid Runners, sometimes they placed bottom half in some rooms, but they steadily improved and cleared them faster- ending up in the last room in which H bossed everyone around and they got through it the quickest. There is a narrative: they learned from earlier "mistakes", had the room to afford making mistakes, and improved. Therefore, they rose up.

And Dodgebolt. Dodgebolt! All four of them are good at it. Of course, we have HBomb, king of Dodgebolt. Then Dave, confident PvPer. The two hermits, both great shots, have grown more confident in their skills. They all trusted themselves to the point they didn't need H to nudge the arrow in their direction- they just picked up the arrow if they felt like it. Cub did that, and he got his kills. Even if half of the team was taken out, or heck, even if it was a 1v3, they had enough skill to power through. All four of them were in good shape, felt great, and meshed well together.

In a way, Aqua29 are each other's safety nets. No one got top 10. Their placements were: 12th, 13th, 20th, 21st. Which honestly wasn't too far from each other. You won't really expect a team with those individual rankings to get second in coins, but they did. Even if False ended up losing the 1v3, her valiant efforts would motivate the team even more and I'm sure they would've won (even though a Cyan reverse sweep would be cool).

And it's this kind of stability and mutual support that powered them through MCC. They didn't get the finale they wanted (Survival Games), that was out of their control, but they squeezed themselves into Dodgebolt anyway. I won't deny that they were lucky- MCC is unpredictable, so luck is often a factor, but I feel they could weather a storm.

Aqua29 is a nice team to watch live. They always bring it back, and I'm not just talking about placements or coins, it's also their morale. This team is going up with Blue9 and Purple15 as one of the competitive hermit teams with best overall team synergy. They were very stable and encouraging of each other <3

okay so this is an odd ask but i was in martyn’s chat talking about appreciating false and also false & martyn as a fun dynamic and someone mentioned ‘oooh riacte on tumblr talks a lot about false and martyn interacting’ and i’ve been thinking about ren martyn false weirdass trio for the last couple of weeks so. hi :] this stream has driven me insane i would love your thoughts on them

Also HIIIIII WELCOME TO THE CLOWN CIRCUS there's a whole. gang. of us out here. Obsessing over a trio we invented and eventually became real. We have AUs and two fics on Ao3 and everything.

Okay Ren False Martyn. Time to pull up my False joins Dogwarts AU from June 2021. They were non-existent back then but y'know how Trafficblr makes connections from seemingly nothing? Yeah.

False is known as the Queen of Hearts. Ren is the Red King and Martyn is the Hand. Clearly there's some red theme royalty thing going on here. Also everyone's brainwaves were somehow aligned and we all thought False would ally with Ren if she was in Third Life- wow I wonder why we all thought that [False and Ren do-not-separatism]. So yay Dogwarts AU and we (Renchanting fans) got really annoying by putting trio stuff in her tag when she was otherwise canonically unrelated 😭 (probably the only time we spammed the tag). Ren and his two sword wielding sassy green blonds. They are so funny.

And then July 2021 hit and we got the three of them in a MCC team, Purple15, and the trio FINALLY existed yippee. But mere months later, MCC17 hit, which was the infamous fanon divorce arc bc that was the first time False and Ren didn't team together in MCC (when they were both in) and Ren was with Martyn so we had so many distracted boyfriend memes and I wrote an entire divorce crackfic which is my anonymous masterpiece.

Then we got Mint Maids with Joel in MCC19 (December) which was also really fun. And then fast forward to this wack ass stream which I can't even start to wrap my head around.

By the way there's also the Space Opera AU ❤️💚💙 which is about the three of them as main characters (yippeeee) and it has its own extensive lore but I don't have the energy to explain it rn. But it has shipping and the three of them go crazy and spopera False and Martyn tear each other to shreds it's brilliant.

Sorry that I'm not wording very well my brain juices have been DRAINED by the stream. Since last one was P22 (special MCC), I would think the July MCC would be more… standard? And it will also be a year since Purple15 aka one of the most (imo) solid hermit teams in a year in terms of overall group chemistry, skill, and performance.

I think people are thinking Grian’s trip to Ghana might coincidence with MCC? I’m not up to date on the regulars tbh lol

(And I won’t be surprised if they quickly add something as a tribute to Techno, he’s left his marks everywhere and especially on MCC ^^)

Rendog appreciation post

Okay. Purple Pandas did amazing as a team but I currently only have the brain juice to ramble about Ren, so here it is.

Ren is lovely and positive as always. He’s so excited for MCC no matter what happens, and he’s so happy that he gets to team with Purple. He heartily welcomes Illumina into the team (probably because he already knows the other two) (Ren also did the exact same thing for Pearl in MCC8). From the beginning, Ren is doing what he does best— being the glue/ middleman.

His pep talk on the pink flamingo was great because it literally established the mood. I don’t know if Purple talked about this off camera, but they’re literally telling the audience their goal is to place top half, do their best and have fun. This establishes a chill and supportive vibe across all four chats. Because they’re not being totally sweaty or totally playing for fun. They’re just gonna do their best because they think they’re a good team, but they’re not ambitious enough to aim too high.

I’ve been talking about how Purple15 reminds me of a weaker Blue9, and then it sort of happened:

When Quig called Martyn “Motivating Martyn” on the practice server, Martyn joked he had a “smidge of the HBomb effect”

We’ve been memeing about Illumina stealing Fruit’s power *coughs* (Poor Fruity)

Ren was literally using H’s Blue9 stats (needing a leader in SG, the exact same sandkeeper strats). Sure, they’re general strats, but Ren personally learned this from H like ten months ago.

The underdogs… getting 10th in PKT and slowly but surely rising until they risked it all for SG and got 5th with no regrets

OKAY so time to talk about the Famous Sands Of Time

I was watching Martyn’s stream because Ren’s stream coincidentally chose to lag, but even though I couldn’t see Ren, his talk about time and sand was clear and comforting. Like, everyone knew how much time / sand they had left, and Ren kept it very calm, like only calling for sand when he really needed it without keeping it too late. Thankfully, someone was always there to give Ren sand, which stopped them from mass panicking.

Ren literally used H’s strats that H taught him for MCC9– clearly calling out time and sand left. This is a general strat, but it’s significant because Ren learned this from H and greatly benefited from it, and now he’s using it on his own. With Ren’s clear and confident words, the team could decide whether they wanted to take risks based on time. Ren was also great at coordinating, with him and Martyn smoothly passing sand/ the vault key.

That’s not to say their SoT was flawless. Illumina died, Ren was a little confused on how to revive him (exact same scenario in MCC12 lmao except that time we were blessed with False crossly calling Ren a dummy), they didn’t know how to put sand into the coin vault thing, and it was their first time playing the NEW SoT in a long time, but despite that, they got first!! They aren’t even a traditionally strong SoT team. They were just… “decent” in other people’s eyes. But no, they were like “oh we missed some coins :(“ AND THEY GOT FIRST.

So now onto Hole in the Wall.

Illumina understandably muted for better concentration, and in hindsight I probably should’ve worried. Because the trio’s without their ace and since the hermits historically sort of depend on their star player, this might not go Very Well. But for some reason I was like “oh Illumina’s muting, cool, these three can do it, no biggie”. My gut feeling was right.

(I also had a terrible, terrible feeling when SG was chosen despite their confidence, so maybe my gut feeling is fairly accurate lol)

I think Ren and False and Martyn actually did really well, and they communicated clearly. It was almost satisfying to watch even though their actual performance wasn’t that satisfying. Ren happily acted as the middleman between False and Martyn, and he made the synergy really good. This was especially nice to watch as one of those Ren-Martyn-False founders on tumblr because this proves they get along really well.

I noticed Ren said at the beginning he works best with leaders, and then he sort of became a leader himself using H strats lol (HBomb in spirit). He also kept on asking others what games they wanted, essentially giving them the reigns, which actually works well with this team because Illumina is a little shy. It’s like he’s bringing the conversation back to choosing the games and offering everyone a chance to discuss without like, saying “we should play so and so”. It relieves the pressure of having one person to decide the game. Especially when the hermits have a history of relying on their star player.

Ren is of course wicked at boosting morale, and I think he’s invaluable as support. His team’s POV is always nice to watch because he rarely gets disheartened and literally always has something nice to say. I said Blue9 was great because someone could finally boost Ren in the way he boosted others (H), and H and Ren bounced off each other amazingly. Now, I think Martyn has also met someone who could boost him in the way he boosted others (Ren). Martyn and Ren combined could come up with a tiny bit of the HBomb effect lol.

This post was intended to be about Ren but I ended up dragging the rest of Purple into it lmao.

Anyways, I just really enjoy Purple15, and Ren even called it one of his favourite teams, and I’m so proud of them. They genuinely did their best, chose to risk it, and then when it failed they didn’t have any regrets :D
