The incredible legacy of the titan of theatre, musical theatre Stephen Sondheim B. March 22, 1930 D. November 26, 2021 lives through his work. To Stephen Sondheim, the man who wrote the most beautiful and my favourite piece of musical theatre of all time. Stephen, it’s through art like this that has taught me how to understand what it means to tell a story as a performer. Your work has displayed a both technical and emotionally complexity that comes barely once in a generation. I’m at forever indebted to you 💙 #ripstephensondheim #inspiration #legend #musictheatre #favourtiesong https://www.instagram.com/p/CWygbbwlrcQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

SAD NEWS: Over the course of a celebrated career spanning more than 60 years, Sondheim co-created Broadway theatre classics such as West Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods, all of which also became hit movies. His intricate and dazzlingly clever songs pushed the boundaries of the art form and he made moving and funny masterpieces from unlikely subject matters, including a murderous barber (Sweeney Todd), the Roman comedies of Plautus (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) and a pointillist painting by Georges Seurat (Sunday in the Park With George). An innovative and widely lauded artist, Sondheim also earned an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. There were regular revivals of Sondheim’s shows and gala concerts and, in 2008, he won a Tony award for lifetime achievement. "Stephen's music is so beautiful, his lyrics so precise, that even as he exposes the imperfections of everyday life, he transcends them. We transcend them," said former President Barack Obama at the Medal of Freedom ceremony in 2015. "Put simply, Stephen reinvented the American musical. " Sondheim had a voice-only cameo in Lin Manuel Miranda's film version of "Tick, Tick ... Boom," released earlier this month, in which he is played by Bradley Whitford. A revival of his 1970 musical "Company" is set to open December 9 after being postponed from March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Imelda Staunton, who starred in productions including Gypsy and Follies, called Sondheim “the Shakespeare of the musical world”. She said: “His stories will live as long as Shakespeare’s because he speaks about people, about emotional difficulties, about the need we all have for love or recognition and to be noticed. A lot of musicals are about happy things – but his musicals are about the difficult things.” Up Your Geek extends its condolences to Sondheim’s family, friends, colleagues, and fans. #peaceinparadise #rip #stephensondheim #ripstephensondheim #musical #musicaltheatre #legend #theatre #westsidestory #gypsy #intothewoods #sweeneytodd https://www.instagram.com/p/CWwxdqwro36/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Don't be afraid it won't be perfect. The only thing to be afraid of really is that it won't be.” The world’s lost a legend today. At 91 years old, Stephen Sondheim’s passed away. When I think of Sondheim I think of a master of words, a master of thoughts. I think of the man who’s words taught me how to heal from feeling lonely (Company), or how to move on when something wounds you (Sunday in the Park). Someone who helped me learn that everything you create is beautiful and important because it came from you. My heart goes out to his husband, friends, and family. May they be left with love and light with what the man left behind. You made a hat, Stephen. You made a world full of them, and I thank you for every single one. 💜🥺 #RIPStephenSondheim https://www.instagram.com/p/CWwkSlksFxa/?utm_medium=tumblr

There can be no overstating the impact of Sondheim on musical theater — or on me for that matter. My love for “Sweeney Todd” began with a PBS broadcast of the original cast performance. It was both terrifying and hilarious and blew my young mind. “West Side Story” still makes me and my sister sob uncontrollably. “Company’s” lyrics are both of its time and timeless. Barbra’s Broadway Album made me want to explore every aspect of Sondheim. I will forever be grateful to my Godmother for sharing this album with me during my formative years. As a young person, I learned that musicals could really be about something through people like Sondheim and McNally. I know this pun is cheesy and not up to par with an award winning lyricist, but I am forever grateful for “Being Alive” in the time of Sondheim. #ripstephensondheim https://www.instagram.com/p/CWwgshxsb-Q/?utm_medium=tumblr
