Do you have any interests in doing a podcast, or know of any good Caribbean history podcasts?
Hello, thank you for your questions. I will answer them in opposite order.
First, as I don’t really watch podcasts, I’m not sure I would be of great help here. That being said, while doing a quick Google Search, I was able to find these from the University of Oxford. Although the series seems to deal primally with the English West Indies, it still looks very interesting. My only concern would be that you ought to be careful not to fall into this bad habit of many Tumblr users of preferring podcasts and YouTube videos to actually taking the time to read scholarly articles and monographs. I don’t think one approach should exclude the other, on the contrary, especially given that a lot of scholars give wonderful presentations that are often filmed. The problem, especially in this world full of pseudo postmodernists and postcolonisalists is that you have people who somehow think ten videos made by some guy in his basement equal ten years of graduate research. I’m not arguing for gatekeeping, just for some caution.
Now, as for whether or not we would consider doing a podcasts ourselves, I’m sure it would be much fun, but no. If we had half the intellect of Jean Price-Mars, the careful words of Jacques Roumain or Jacques Stephen Alexis, the prose of Sténio Vincent and actually devoted as much time to studying Haitian history than Georges Corvington, then maybe we would; but as I’m sure you have guessed by now, this is not the case!
Good night.

Have you read The Invaded: How Latin Americans and Their Allies Fought and Ended U.S. Occupations? McPherson analyzes Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua and it looks quite interesting.
Hello. Thank you for your question.
I (admin A) am planning to as part of my normal reading load for my thesis. To be fair, it appears very similar to other books approaching U.S. foreign policy in the Caribbean basin and Latin America during this period.
If you are interested in early 20th century American imperialism in this region, there are many monographs that you could browse. I recently read Lester D. Langley’s The Banana Wars: United States Intervention in the Caribbean, 1898-1934. It was very decent and effectively explained the geopolitical and more cultural aspects of these American interventions.
Have a nice afternoon. :)

This question is kind of out there, but you wouldn't happen to know if anyone is working on translating the histories of Beabrun Ardouin or Thomas Madiou? I heard about a 2014 translation of de Vastey's "The Colonial System Unveiled" and was just curious about the aforementioned authors.
Hello.
Thank you for your question.
To be blunt, I have no idea and therefore cannot answer you.
That being said, given the magnitude of the work both historians have undertaken in their time, whatever translation would require a lot of effort and would have to include a preface for each series made by top scholars to historicize both Ardouin’s and Madiou’s work.
Furthermore, I feel that if someone is to read Ardouin or Madiou today, they should do so in a critical manner, of course, but also to appreciate both writers’ particular style. The latter would most likely be difficult, if not impossible, with a translation.

The portrait of Granville you just posted looks nothing like the image of him from his son's biography. The Wiki page says the US portrait is an example of Orientalism and is not meant to accurately portray his features. Is the Wiki page right?
Hello. Thank you for your question.
This is very much possible. Given that I try to stay away from Wikipedia as much as possible (not out of a false sense of superiority but because aside from the Haitian Revolution and related fields, most of their entries on Haiti are very much problematic).
When I took the picture from the Wikimedia Commons it did said “Granville from the perspective of Tilyard” which made me question if it resembled the man himself. I left it there on the post since more often than not, these portraits seem to have been more (very) artistic representations than portrait that aimed to capture the essence of the model.
Now, I am a bit unsure about the Orientalism part. (Not so much because i don’t understand the term, but because I wonder if it might be the case here.)  Perhaps what we have here is a similar to Belley’s portrait by French artist Girodet, in which art historians and historians disagree about whether Girodet’s emphasis of Belly’s reproductive organs should be labeled “Orientalism” (or if the term should be used for similar cases but solely for ones that relate to Middle Eastern and East Asian individuals.) This is of course very much open to debate.
I think what i’ll do is add an extra sentence to say some strongly doubt this portrait authentically resembles Granville.
Thank you. Have a nice day. :)
