Week in Review of Week Nov 26
Sorry I have been a little busy of late. This is what has happened this week…
In the past two weeks some powerful pioneers have passed such as Rosalind Carter the beloved first lady. Who was a wonderful humanitarian as well. Henry Kissinger the genius diplomat who lived to be 100 years old and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor the first woman on the Supreme Court. I hope that they all rest in…

Since I made a guide for my main next-gen universe earlier, I thought I would go ahead and make a guide for my AU next-gen universe too! :3 That way it can have an official list instead of the WiP/concept lists before lol. Since I won't be adding anymore characters to this universe(unless I can think of good side/crackships to add to it with remaining characters lol), it is pretty much 'finished'/filled in a sense. I just need to draw everyone out(besides the few I doodled before), but I have other projects to work on so that will have to come at a later date(but hopefully sometime within the upcoming/summer months). Until then, I hope you enjoy! :D

John Wayne and Montgomery Clift in Red River (Howard Hawks, 1948)
Cast: John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Joanne Dru, Walter Brennan, Colleen Gray, Harry Carey, John Ireland, Noah Beery Jr., Harry Carey Jr., Chief Yowlatchie, Paul Fix, Hank Worden. Screenplay: Borden Chase, Charles Schnee, based on a story by Chase. Cinematography: Russell Harlan. Art direction: John Datu. Film editing: Christian Nyby. Music: Dimitri Tiomkin.
You know those social media posts that ask you to name the movies you've watched more than five times that you would still watch again? I don't respond to them because there are too many movies that fit the category for me, but Red River would certainly be on my list. Each time I watch it, I have a little different reaction. Sometimes, for example, I'm glad when the character of Tess Millay (Joanne Dru) shows up, because it's kind of a relief from all that male bonding of the cattle drive. Other times, she annoys me. She's the "Hawksian woman" of the movie, the character embodied so well by Jean Arthur in Only Angels Have Wings (1939), Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday (1940), and especially Lauren Bacall in To Have and Have Not (1944) and The Big Sleep (1946). The Hawksian woman talks back to men, asserting her place in the world they dominate. But Tess Millay just talks, and even talks about how much she talks. Moreover, she's obviously there primarily to serve as a reincarnation of Fen (Colleen Gray), the woman whom Tom Dunson (John Wayne) loved and lost when he left the wagon train at the beginning of the movie. Still, even this bit of unnecessary narrative linkage is forgivable in a movie that offers so much. There is, of course, what I think of as Wayne's best performance as Dunson -- some prefer his work in The Searchers (John Ford, 1956), which I find too artfully staged by Ford. Here he shows he can do everything from Hawks's characteristic swiftly overlapping dialogue to the paranoid trail-boss martinet to the tough guy hiding his tender side. And there's Montgomery Clift's remarkable movie debut as Matthew Garth; Red River was filmed before The Search (Fred Zinnemann, 1948), though the latter was released first. Clift, who was stage-trained, seems to have instinctively learned that movie acting is done in large part with the face, and he uses his eyes particularly expressively -- he reminds me of the great silent film actors in that regard. The scene in which Garth and Cherry Valance (John Ireland) handle each other's guns is one of the great homoerotic moments in movies, but it's prepared for by the way Clift and Ireland look at each other when they first meet, sizing each other up. And then there's one of the great supporting casts in movies, including Walter Brennan, Noah Beery Jr., and a whole lot of cattle. (Hawks, who also produced the film, graciously gave Arthur Rosson, the second unit director in charge of the cattle drive scenes, a co-director credit.) Dimitri Tiomkin's music added immeasurably to the film, but surprisingly went unnominated by the Academy, which took notice only of Christian Nyby for editing and Borden Chase for the film's story. (It was based on his story in the Saturday Evening Post, and was turned into a screenplay by Charles Schnee -- though a lot of the dialogue is so Hawksian that I suspect the director deserved a screenplay credit, too.) Naturally, like most Hawks films, it won no Oscars.

The only female director in Hollywood at the time, Arzner defied expectations on multiple levels. She directed over 20 films in 24 years, taught Francis Ford Coppola and was the first female member of the Director’s Guild Association.
Film Director Dorothy Arzner
From Wikipedia: Dorothy Emma Arzner #bornonthisday (January 3, 1897 – October 1, 1979) was an American film director whose career in Hollywood spanned from the silent era of the 1920s into the early 1940s.
(...) Additionally, she was one of a very few women able to establish a successful and long career in Hollywood as a film director until the 1970s. Arzner made a total of twenty films between 1927 and 1943 and launched the careers of a number of Hollywood actresses, including Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, and Lucille Ball. Additionally, Arzner was the first woman to join the Directors Guild of America and the first woman to direct a sound film.
Director Dorothy Arzner in the Grip Department at Paramount Studios, 1934.
1933, Katherine Hepburn is in a metallic moth suit designed by Walter Plunkett for her second film “Christopher Strong" directed by Dorothy Arzner.

Dedicated to the one he loves - Part 3
Lucy was laughing as she and Tamera parked outside “Connie & Ted’s “ a new, hip, sun-drenched sea food patio suggested by Patrice. She loves this part of Melrose, over by the Pacific Design Center. So many fancy, beautiful store windows, and hidden tea dens, and woo woo magic shops. Plus, the original tv series was filmed nearby- hidden down a secret alley - you’d miss it if you weren’t paying attention.
They find their date, holding a very large menu under the outdoor canopy with drinks ordered and chilled oysters waiting. Patrice is stunning in her red dahlia print Tom Ford dress sipping on the house drink “the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Monica.” She smiles and directs Tamera to the iced tea, and Lucy to the “bloody Maria (tequila)”. The trio place their food order and show Tamera the wonders of oysters…
Then after a contented sigh, Tamera says, “I am so mad at him. Police Zaddy - or Officer Dadford as I liked to call him was a total douche canoe. He kept you at arm’s length for forever Lucy, and dating that fake, plastic girl when he knew that you had feelings for him. Lucy- he knew, hell everyone knew. There was a fucking pool on when you two would FINALLY get over yourselves and BE HAPPY. “ Lucy keeps trying to interrupt and change the subject, but Tamera keeps talking over her. “Stop it Lucy, I am talking now. You forget, that I saw him with you as coworkers, as friends, and as more than friends. That was no work kiss I saw.”
“He told you he loved you for crying out loud - in front of people. That you were all he thought about - all he dreamed about. You were so happy. And then you took a long weekend to Vancouver and you came back crying. Lucy - you scared me with the sounds you were making. I literally thought you were dying. And I didn’t understand, I thought something happened with that scary Rosalind lady, so I called Tim and asked him. He’s never lied to me - he’s always been honest with me.”
Lucy is crying now. Silent tears streaming down her face. She can’t speak. Tamera turns to Patrice and says, “He lied to me too. He said Lucy wanted different things. That he was wrong - It was all a mistake. Some bullshit about there being rules and policies….” Tamera leaned over and took a big gulp of Lucy’s drink and said, “Patrice - he broke my heart too, by hurting her, he hurt me too.”
And then, like magic, their food arrived- giving Lucy a chance to catch her breath and Patrice a chance to formulate a plan. Yelling was not going to cut it, not by a long shot.
——-
Gotta say, I am enjoying this one. Hope you are too!

John Wayne and Jorge Rivero in Rio Lobo (Howard Hawks, 1970)
Cast: John Wayne, Jorge Rivero, Jennifer O’Neill, Jack Elam, Christopher Mitchum, Victor French, Susana Dosamantes, Sherry Lansing, David Huddleston, Mike Henry. Screenplay: Burton Wohl, Leigh Brackett. Cinematography: William H. Clothier. Production design: Robert Emmet Smith. Film editing: John Woodcock. Music: Jerry Goldsmith.
Not much of the opening sequence of Rio Lobo, an exciting and ingenious train robbery, was probably directed by Howard Hawks. He was injured during the filming, and much of it was accomplished by his second-unit directors, Yakima Canutt and Mike Moder, who are generously given screen credits -- just as Hawks gave a co-director credit to Arthur Rosson for the cattle drive scenes in Red River (1948). The sequence is also the best thing in the film. What follows feels for the most part tired, derivative, and poorly cast, which is a shame, since it was Hawks's last film. We'd all like our favorite directors to go out on a high note, but it seldom happens: There aren't many who regard Billy Wilder's Buddy Buddy (1981), or John Ford's 7 Women (1966) as sufficiently valedictory achievements, either. Still, Rio Lobo has its moments, most of them supplied by old pros like John Wayne and Jack Elam. It has cinematography by the masterly William H. Clothier and a score by Jerry Goldsmith. What it doesn't have is a competent supporting cast, particularly in the key roles played by Jorge Rivero and Jennifer O'Neill. Rivero's success in Mexican films, combined with his good looks, led Hollywood to give him a try, but he's out of his depth as a foil for Wayne and is obviously uncomfortable in his second language. O'Neill, a former model, is the last in the line of "Hawksian women" whose ability to stand up to men gave a bright tension to his films, and who were previously embodied by the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Jean Arthur, Rosalind Russell, and Lauren Bacall. But when O'Neill flubs an attempt to match Wayne at Hawks's characteristic overlapping repartee, it's clear that the game is over. O'Neill's character virtually disappears from the later part of the film, and the climactic scene is given to another character played by Sherry Lansing, who at least recognized her limitations as an actress and gave it up to become a film studio executive. Rio Lobo, a more or less acknowledged semi-remake of Rio Bravo (1959) and its remake, El Dorado (1966), is not without its rewards for those who relish old-style Westerns, but coming from an era when Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah were reinventing the genre it feels like a sad anachronism.
