Happy International Romani Day!!!

I'm a day late, but I celebrate being Romani everyday :)

We are the largest ethnic minority in Europe, but we live all over the world. A diverse group of vistas make up the Romani community and our culture has heavily influenced several parts of other cultures, such as flamenco dance, European jazz music, and Bulgarian wedding music.

As someone living in the US, I recommend reading "Romani Realities in the United States: Breaking the Silence, Challenging the Stereotypes" for more general info about Roma in the US.

I also recommend reading about the plays Kali Tras and Samudaripen.

Re: Boycotting Marvel Studios Captain America: Brave New World. If you are known as the Marvel fan to friends, say you aren’t going and urge them to do the same. This has to reach beyond the online fans circles to the casual fans, friends, family, classmates, coworkers etc.

Jewish fans have said it better but Marvel Studios has consistently failed to properly adapt their Jewish characters (Moon Knight, upcoming Billy Kaplan), as well as refused to use other female leads (Sharon Carter, Misty Knight) & instead chose to spotlight a Zionist character.

Romani characters like Wanda Maximoff and Pietro Maximoff (anglicized name Peter) were white-washed and offensively written to collaborate with Hydra (a fictional org started by Red Skull, a Nazi trained by Hitler) Marvel has failed representation matters.

During the Holocaust, Nazis targeted both Jewish and Romani people for extermination as part of the Final Solution. An estimated 6,000,000 Jewish, 250,000-500,000 Roma and Sinti victims died in the Jewish and Roma genocide, “Shoah” and “Porajmos”(US)/“Samudaripen”(EU) respectively.

As the genocide in Gaza and Zionist occupation of Palestine since the 1948 Nakba continues, the choice to have a Zionist character is likely tied to the US military involvement in Hollywood and government support of Israel. (Captain Marvel was used to recruit women for the Air Force)

Again, adapting Sharon Carter or especially Misty Knight as a Black woman with significant rapport with Sam Wilson as Captain America in the comics to be the female agent in the plot could have avoided a Zionist character all together.

Something worth mentioning about Doctor Doom’s backstory is that depending on the time scale he would have been born after the Porrajmos.

Which means his community suffered greatly.

The ideas that he could never be weak and that Doom is superior came from his own peoples suffering.

yyyeeeahhhhh that's the case for most, if not all Romani characters in the Marvel universe. Wanda and Pietro are famously the children of Holocaust survivors.

The whole point of Victor's backstory is that his community was suffering, and that he became the person he became because of the violence he witnessed, and the losses he experienced. They don't talk about the Holocaust directly, but the themes you're getting at are already present-- they're kind of the whole point.

Today, August 2nd, is actually Romani Holocaust Memorial Day. I'm not going to shy away for representing this part of our history, but I would like to say that the Romani people are widespread, and our history is long and complicated. We can represent other parts of that history, and other instances of persecution, without comparing everything to the Porrajmos/Samudaripen.

Anyways, now that we're talking about it, I have post with a brief historical primer on Romani Holocaust victims here. Dikhe Na Bister is posting some interesting stuff about their Memorial Day activities, and they're also running a fundraiser for Roma Holocaust survivors in Ukraine.

If Germany was actually sorry about WWII and about the genocides they committed, they wouldn't be in favour of prostitution and they wouldn't be building brothels in which an overwhelming number of Romani women are being raped by men, beaten by men and called 'Gypsy whores' by their pimps and their johns. The legal and institutionalized mass raping of Romani women in German brothels just proves that torture and persecution carried by the German State on Romani women never stopped. The German men raping Romani women in brothels are just the same as their German grandfathers who did the same thing in concentration camps.

Un libro che ho letto con troppo ritardo, ma che sono contenta di aver finito. Oltre ad avermi strappato l'anima in più punti (ma può essere che sia pure eccessivamente emotiva in questo periodo, chissà), ho sentito tutta la potenza che trasmette tramite la sua scrittura l'autrice. Può essere che abbia qualche pregiudizio perché la scrittrice è una persona a cui tengo molto. Pensavo che non sarei mai potuta essere amica di nessun3 autor3, perché come mi è capitato più volte, poi si rovina la magia del libro. Con lei così non è stato. Dice sempre che questo libro non è suo, ma di tutt3 l3 rom e sinti, di tutt3 coloro che si vedono negati diritti da secoli, il cui Samudaripen (olocausto) non viene riconosciuto, perché, in fondo, sono solo z******. Il suo stile forse non è ancora pienamente maturo, ma posso dire che è bellissimo leggere la sua prosa. È una prosa che porta alla lettura a voce alta e forse è proprio così che andrebbe letto, riflettendo l'idea di libro comunitario. Sono contenta di averlo finito, sono contenta che stia avendo il successo che merita. Di certo questa non è una recensione obiettiva, ma credo che in questo caso fosse necessario non essere oggettivi, non lo si può essere di fronte a opere simili.

DÍA INTERNACIONAL DEL PUEBLO GITANO (8 de abril)

Los subgrupos gitanos sinti y roma fueron brutalmente perseguidos por los naz1s, como ya conté en otros posts anteriores. Sin embargo, es un tema que aún hoy sigue siendo muy invisibilizado. A diferencia de la Shoa, poco se sabe del Porrajmos o Samudaripen (genocidio gitano).

Los sinti y roma no solamente fueron sistemáticamente perseguidos y enviados a campos de concentración (como Buchenwald, Sachsenhausen, Dachau, Mauthausen, Ravensbrück, etc.), sino también a los campos de exterminios del Este (Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belzec, Sobibor, Chelmno, Treblinka y Majdanek), construidos para llevar a cabo la “Solución final” 1942 (el exterminio de la totalidad de los judíos de Europa), que fue coordinada en febrero de 1942 en la conferencia de Wannsee.

Los motivos ideológicos de la persecución hacia estos grupos se deben a motivos racistas y culturales (aunque ambas categorías se superponen):

🔸Racistas: los sinti y roma eran considerados por los naz1s como una raza inferior y, por lo tanto, propensa a contaminar la “pureza de la sangre aria”.

🔸Culturales: sus formas de vida nómades eran incompatibles con los modelos de vida y de producción que los nazis pretendían y con la doctrina de “tierra y sangre”, que circunscribía las identidades nacionales a un territorio concreto. Pero fundamentalmente, los gitanos fueron víctimas de los estereotipos despreciativos arraigados en la sociedad (no sólo alemana, naturalmente), como los asociados a la haraganería y a mitos como el del secuestro de niños. Por estos motivos, al ser deportados a los campos, la mayoría eran clasificados como “asoziale” (seres inadaptados a la sociedad, improductivos) e identificados con un triángulo negro correspondiente a dicha categoría; aunque en algunos campos se les colocaba un triángulo marrón, exclusivo para gitanos.

The Swiss Special Fund for Needy Victims of the Holocaust decided on August 24, 1998 that only those Romani victims who were imprisoned in camps or under similar conditions during the World War II are eligible to apply to the Fund, despite previous statements that the Fund would give support to all persons who were persecuted for racial, religious, political or other reasons, and those who were in any other way victims of the Holocaust.

Entra nel vivo l’appuntamento culturale internazionale “Amico Rom” promosso e organizzato dall'associazione Them Romanò e UCRI - Unione delle Comunità Romanès in Italia. Domani, 4 ottobre, a Lanciano (Ch) dalle 16 nella Casa di Conversazione, Sala Lanci, davanti ad ospiti e autorità internazionali e alle più alte cariche dell'International Romani Union (organismo che rappresenta i Rom all'Onu) sarà presentato, alla stampa, di ROMHERITAGE, anche in diretta streaming. “ROMHERITAGE - spiega il musicista Santino Spinelli, presidente dell’associazione Them Romano - è un progetto per la creazione di un itinerario europeo di cultura romanì, di cui Lanciano sarà tappa, grazie al monumento al Samudaripen, situato nel Parco delle Memorie e inaugurato il 5 ottobre 2018.
