This! @mumufresh !! “3 years ago today, July 13th 2015 a Black woman by the name of Sandra Bland was found dead, hanged in a Texas jail cell in police custody. Her death was quickly written off as a suicide although some evidence suggested otherwise. Her story haunted me for almost a year before I wrote this song in her honor. I wrote the 1st part of this song in a 1960s doo wop style as a libation to her life and death. I wrote the song in first person in hopes of evoking some human empathy for her story even if your life experiences haven’t allowed you the ability to relate personally. I wanted each listener to ask themselves “what if it were me”? What if it were my loved one? Wouldn’t I want understanding? Empathy? Compassion? Justice? The portions removed were those that gave an unflattering view of the police officer who arrested Bland. Kelly also stated that he was threatened for speaking out about what he witnessed during the July 10, 2015 incident. Bland died in a Waller County, Texas jail last year, three days after being arrested for allegedly assaulting trooper Brian Encinia. The department said that Bland had apparently committed suicide, a possibility that her family denies.
