It’s always so funny to me whenever I see posts that are like “save Rhaenyra from That Man™️!!!!” because baby she doesn’t wanna be saved. Rhaenyra loves Daemon more than she has ever loved anyone. Whatever our souls are made of his and mine are the same, they’re made of the same fabric, we were always meant to burn together, make me your wife, etc etc

I swear I just realized that when Caraxes screamed, Nettles heard it. She (who was already crying) heard Caraxes (daemon) scream out in anguish for her and there was nothing she could do about it…. I’m gonna go cry 👍🏾
It’s a heartbreaking moment and inarguably the most romantically tragic moment that I cannot wait to see be brought to the small screen.

I always see people say well, if Alicent had just married Helaena to Jace, the war would never have happened. And it's like the war would have absolutely happened, its akin to the waves ever falling onto the shore, its inevitable and unstoppable, all that marriage would have done was put a bandaid on a wound for a little while before everything would just explode.
I don't think there would have been any situation where Alicient would have agreed to that. If Helaena did marry Jace, she and any children born would have been used as a hostage during the war and worse than that, she would have been stuck in Dragonstone with a group of the most volatile people who despise her side of the family, what would have Rhaenrya or Daemon have done to her, an easy within reach target when Lucerys died? Would Jace even be kind to her once his brother dies?
Or let's say that the marriage had gone through and Alicient manages to make Heleana stay in Kingslanding along with the Black team and for a little while, everyone would be in an uneasy peace, forced to get along under Viserys eye and then the Black team would want something done & the Green team would need to agree for it to happen(and this something would undoubtedly not be in favour of the Greens) or if the Green team was perceived as disrepectful whether directly as one of the members doing something(an incident with the boys or Otto secretly scheming or Alicient doing her queen duties, I can just imagine Daemon seething in the background like how dare she command while in the castle of the Targaryens) or someone implying that the Green team would be better and it getting back to the Black team, they would have immediately implied a subtle threat regarding Helaena and declared their authority as the to be Queen party(well, as subtle as a hammer on an unruly nail could be) and any slight disbelieving hopes that this arrangement could actually work would be dashed and the Green team would be furious and unable to do anything about the Black team, and the moment Viserys dies, that's it for them.
And If they had managed to secure the city, the same as the show and had Helaena & any of her children as well, they'd be using them as a hostage against the Black Team too and at least with them, she'd be better treated.
And continuing with what about if Helaena had children? She'd be known to have had children with a widely suspected bastard leading to a shaky line and Daemon is right there with his two targaryen looking boys, there is no way he or even those boys or their later children would have left her and her children alone. If she had married Jace, she'd basically be terribly screwed over twice in succesion crisis in her lifetime.
Also, if Jace had married Helaena, what about Baela? Now, I really don't think Corlys would have let it go when he's been promised a Velaryon queen on the throne and has gotten so close to it after all the other times, just to only have a bastard prince. So that's basically 2 main people besides Otto in Helaena's family who would be eyeing her and her children.
Let's not forgot ofcourse, What about her brothers with their future childrens and their claims, the relationship would never be the same and I doubt that something would not be done about her children too if they were to manage win.
What kind of life would that be to be taken away from your family and placed with people who will be actively to passively hostile to you? To know your relationship with all your family side will forever be altered, that your mother wouldn't choose you and your line over your brother and you & all your children will be in danger from everyone for a very long time?
#Like I feel that marriage offer was a really shitty offer and Alicient absolutely knew that#The levels of isolation and fear Helaena would have gone through would have mirrored Alicient so much#And while she wouldn't choose Helaena over Aegon especially since Helaena's claim would be intertwined with the Black team#It doesn't mean that Alicient doesn't love her so much#That she would never put her in that kind of harm#Everyone kinda glosses over this because we're modern and there's no stigma against marrying a bastard#But Helaena would be marrying a bastard and while it was never formally acknowledged in the show#If Rhaenrya lost and had to be forced to admit that to save her life Helaena's standing#And her children's claim & royal life would all be invalidated#And Helaena's own claim to the throne would be severely diminished as well#Somehow#that marriage would make everything so much worse#anti black team#house of the dragon#heleana targaryen#alicent hightower#anti rhaenrya#anti daemon#anti viserys i targaryen#I feel like the only only person who wouldn't have a problem with this marriage among everyone's worry and refusal is Viserys#Because the way everyone says Helaena married to Jace would stop the war#is them assuming that the marriage is a one for all magic solution to everyone's problem and nothing could ever go wrong again#And the only person who would have that view in the show is Viserys#He'd be the only one smiling and being giddy at that wedding like all his problems had now disappeared

curious why you like jace so much?
i like him because of his contradictions. he's supposed to be rhaenyra's perfect son, her perfect heir and the first step in rhaenyra's ascension, instead he's everything but. he can't ever be rhaenyra's perfect heir and son because of his parentage, something he had no control over and no matter how much he tries he will never overcome it. doesn't matter how much rhaenyra says to him that he is a targaryen, that's all that matters. and jace knows this!!! so making him be painfully self-aware of his shortcomings and his overcompensation and repression make for an interesting character.
he's also angry all the time, moody, he has repressed every emotion that could make him seem less in the eyes of his family and court so when the pot inevitably boils over, it's so explosive. finding out that his life was a lie at such young age and that he was never going to be enough made him overly independent and anxious and annoying to build himself and his family(!) to be the best and in the process, protect them so they will never feel the way he feels.
i find characters who try and try so interesting and i'm not going to say i'm a tragedy enjoyer because i'm too much of a coward to fully embrace it, but the fact it doesn't even matter at the end that jace was such perfect diplomat and commander, good brother, the best heir and prince because he died unceremoniously trying (ha!) to save his little brother. it was never going to be enough. something about futility and the will to transform the world you want to live in etc.
thanks for the question

HOTD: Ryan Condal & Sara Hess
I do think the recent interviews from Sara Hess and Ryan Condal were condescending and patronizing, as though fans are unable to understand nuance and complexity and the term “morally grey”... Completely conflating the issue to mask a larger, more legitimate concern. “He’s not Ned Stark or Han Solo” or humans aren’t so “absolute”, when we all understand perfectly human nature. It’s very insulting. The audience understands that he has dark traits, we have literally seen him commit atrocities at various points in the season, however, he does also have the capacity for good, with one of his redeeming qualities over the course of the season being love of family. All season long, viewers have witnessed his devotion and loyalty to family and those he cares most for, and have been told this by writers, directors, and actors... to see the culmination of the argument between him and Rhaenyra was a bit jarring because there had been no prior build up to it based on what was previously established regarding their specific relationship dynamic. Especially coming from episode 8 when Daemon was supportive of Rhaenyra and her children’s claims, backing them every step of the way (even over his own daughters), with nary a hint of envy or jealousy. Defending her name openly in court.
Completely get that there is a dark side to love, it isn’t always pretty and pure. Sometimes it’s ugly and toxic, particularly when it involves two passionate people... and sometimes emotions become especially heightened when it involves grief and heartbreak. But still, that scene felt very inconsistent with everything we knew and saw up until then. Ryan was the one who said that Daemon especially loved Rhaenyra... and we saw that special connection onscreen. And they have deliverately cut scene that would show a different side: one hugging daughters, another comforting Rhaenyra after she delivers a stillborn, for example. The wording used to describe his character and that moment by Sara and Ryan were just not congruent.
I see the arc they’re trying to take with this. It gives Jaimes Lannister parallel. They want to make him the unlikeable asshole, take him down a dark path before “redeeming” his character, and ingratiating him to the fanbase. The difference is, however, (and perhaps this wasn’t considered), Jaime was part of a reviled family and his primary love interest (Cersei) was highly unlikeable. With Daemon, on the other hand, a great portion of the fandom love Rhaenyra - particularly casual show viewers, who represent most of the audience and haven’t read the source material -, and by default, side with the Blacks which by nature, extends to Daemon as well. We enjoy the relationship dynamic with Rhaenyra, his unwavering support of her. The show asked the audience to heavily invest in the romance. And through that, despite his misdeeds, we saw the good in him as well. In his love for Rhaenyra and Viserys both. Not to say Daemon doesn’t stand on his own as a character, he does 1000%. But it is to recognize also the power of association as well as the natural draw of the anti-hero’s and our fascinations with characters neither wholly good and bad. Perhaps because it comes across as more real and we recognize elements of ourselves in their complexity?
If Jaime was still an asshole, but a Stark or paired with a more well liked love interest from the beginning, would the initial perception of his character have differed? One thing I do find strange though are the scenes they decided to delete from the plot leak. Script leaks mentioned scenes of Daemon comforting Rhaenyra and having the kings guard swear at her birthing. Also, it indicated the beach scene was supposed to perhaps be more extensive? And though there was an argument, it never once mentioned physical violence. Mind you, these scripts came from the same place as the ones from the previous episodes which were always accurate and on point. The minor discrepancies between the episode 10 script leaks and the released version, with the moments of Daemon showing evident care and grief being the only ones removed, is weird. It makes me wonder if their decision to not include them was out of recognition of Daemon’s unexpected popularity and a need to portray him more harshly heading into next season.

let me make one thing clear;
Otto and Viserys are the only one’s to blame for the Targaryen family’s actions and downfall. Otto is the only one to blame for anything any of the greens did, from making his daughter a child bride to what happened to Dyana.
Otto ruined his daughter, made her untrusting and hungry for any control over anything. The damage he did to his daughter spread to her children, she abused them all emotionally and sometimes physically, filling them with the same fear and hate that ruined her life. She made Aegon her cover up and her scapegoat, while projecting onto her golden child Aemond, making him feel like he had to give up his wants and needs to be perfect for her and the family’s image. Helaena was betrothed to an angry manchild and forced to have his children that neither of them wanted (they were still her world, but not her choice, and because of it she had to raise them alone in the already lonely world she lived in because of her families many issues). On top of it all Otto abused Aegon and between that and Viserys’s own abuse and neglect, killed off the little boy who loved his family, nephews included. They made a boy who never really grew up and would rather drown himself in wine and ale then actually live through each and every day. They made a boy that felt the need to ruin his image to avoid a fate that was constantly forced on him, make a spectacle of himself to be seen as who he was and not what other’s wanted of him, and eventually a person who was capable of hurting that little girl. He would have been just fine with Nyra taking the thrown, letting him live free to do what he wanted; but instead he was constantly told that if he didn’t become king Rhaenyra would have him and his family executed, and it drove him to drink far to young, act out and receive punishmets that broke him, and he eventually became both a monster and a pawn.
Viserys let his family be destroyed, let his children grow up without a father due to his favoritism, and never raised a finger to help any of them. He did the same to his brother, always expecting the worst of him, pushing him to do more and more in hopes that he would finally earn his brother love and respect. He ignored Rhaenyra’s wrongs and hurt people around the two of them instead of actually handling them, creating a world where Nyra would only know enemies (I love Nyra but she’s not innocent, and she always believed she could just get away with it, it put her and her children in constant danger, and Viserys never gave her that wake up call to tread a little lighter, to see that her image and reputation were not invincible).
At the end of the day, none of them were truly to blame. They did what they had to to survive, even at the sacrifice of one another. They were all drowning, pushing each other under to get their own heads above the water, while Otto held his hand in front of Viserys’s eyes, the two stood safe and dry on land.
~~~ I have to put some of my ‘tags’ here cause tumblr keeps deleting them and I have more to say in the ‘rambling in the tags’ type of way and I’m about to fucking scream and cry because this is all too much right now.
- Aegon deserved better, because if anyone had stepped in earlier in his life he would have had a chance. But instead he was left to the hands of his grandfather and he was turned into a monster. He was such a sweet kid and a gross teenager but thats what being a teenager is. He makes my heart hurt so badly, especially as an eldest child, I felt his pain.
- Aemond he was the perfect golden child, he never lived for himself because he was too busy trying to please his mum and make her happy, she lived through him vicariously and he allowed it to see her smile. He was the people pleaser child, and because of all his repression he grew to be so angry all of the time, especially after he lost his eye. He was told that the anger would only stop when he got revenge and that idea ruled over his life, until it drove him to make a very stupid childish mistake that took his nephews life. traumatizing him and starting a war in the process.
- Helaena deserved a life to be free and happy, not stuck in a palace of angry people that all thought she was weird or a nuisance. All she had were her kids and her bugs. Not even her own mother knew her enough to know not to touch her. The autistic daughter in me cries for her, like we weren’t even shown that much of her but that part of me just knows her life was rough in the way only a repressed autistic daughter would know. its such a special form of trauma and thinking about it makes me feel sick.
- Daemon is so misunderstood by the majority of this fandom but one of the things that really pisses me off is that people fail to realize it was viserys neglect that was the reason for most of his actions. he tried so hard to get his brother attention, upping the anti every time viserys accepted the worst of him or made him feel like he wasn’t enough. he was just such a classic little brother. he just wanted his big brothers love and attention. he tried so hard to make his brother love him, he almost died and went mad, time and fucking time again to do it, and it was still never enough for him.
- I love Nyra with all my heart, but she has sheltered favorite child syndrome. she does whatever she wanted, created problems for herself, and then questioned why the world and the people around her were so cruel. it was viserys’s fault for constantly covering for her, never letting her realized she wasn’t invincible, but people really need to start realizing that she needs to start shouldering some personal blame, it wasn’t always someone elses fault. she put herself and her children in danger and helped tear apart alicents life when she needed her most.
- Alicent is a spitting image of my mother, and I want to hate her so badly because of it, but I can’t because I know its because she was hurt so badly. she was like a wounded animal, lashing out at anyone who got close to her because she was scared and hurting. she was hurt the worst by the few people she should have been able to trust and it made her weary of the world. she was so isolated and so spent, she was exausted from the years of being used by men with little to no her best interests, raising children alone, and just being afraid that everyone around her is also going to hurt and use her. but she was so alone, she had no one to fall back on, no one to turn to when she was ready to just give up.
