Amos and I recently competed at the Mid Central Regional Championship in Bourbonnais, IL. We spent a very long week training and putting together the regional as my mentor hosted it.

My first championship at the IGP3 level and we got a 22-86-86. Unfortunately we didn't pass tracking, but with GSD Nationals in 2 more weeks we had a great opportunity to see the holes in training and address them. Next stop: USCA GSD Nationals.

Tristan did protection for the first time at schutzhund club today! It's a little silly to see him at it, but he tried a bit. 😄 First the helper did the posting and I held a bite wedge for Tristan to bite. He did pretty well with that, barking lots and biting and pulling on it quite enthusiastically. Then we switched so I was posting and the helper tried holdng the wedge, but Tristan thought that was very weird. Tristan did bite a little bit for him, not very enthusiastic though. Tristan doesn't want to fight with strangers. I think once he knows the helper, he will have more fun. I know that's not the point, I know your dog is suppose to be able to fight unfamiliar helpers, but I just want Tristan to have a bit of fun. No defense work. Tristan is getting really excited for the wedge I have for him at home. Hopefully he can bring that attitude to club soon. 😄

Met up with a schutzhund training club for the first time ever! The two trainers that hosted the club are a professional trainer that trains her own dogs in protection, and another professional trainer that actually immigrated from Germany and grew up learning the sport from her parents. SUPER huge source of information, I was glad to be invited. Even happier yet to run a practice BH pattern and be told by the German trainer that Reese could pass it no problem! I think the closest trial though is out of my travel area for this year, though, and it competes with another trial I committed to.

I will say, though, that the differences between the two baffled me a little bit and it was a bit of an adjustment. Where AKC obedience is super strict on exactly how you return to your dog, exactly how much of a turn to make, etc., I was very confused to be told to either return from the side or from behind, my choice. Same with the left turn, I was told I could either do a pivot left (obedience), or a schutzhund turn that I've learned from Rally. A bit of an adjustment and a head scratcher for me, I always assumed schutzhund would be much stricter.

I am very happy with Reese, though! He was not at his best and to be told he'd pass a BH no problem as he is was amazing to hear. I only got the one picture, but in this I had his reactive ass in a long stay away from me, for an extended period of time, while another dog and handler practiced some things very close by and offering treats and such. He didn't fidget, didn't whine, didn't even pay much attention at all! I finally called it after 10 minutes, and he was able to cal.ly get up and approach me. I was so proud of him.

Wow, just unlocked a fully new behavior from Gwyn

Sister (Auntie The Tertiary Human) was coming to apply topical pain meds around painful incisions as I was visibly suffering; Gwyn came back early from Go See the Ponies with TFaTB. Gwyn saw me in pain and my sister advancing meaningfully towards me with unknown thing in hand.

Gwyn near teleported to my chest facing sister, glaring angrily. No teeth, no sound, just hard-eyed stare. She's never been protective up close; she's always been avoiding confrontation. And expecting me to protect puppies, which I do. I guess it's never looked like I needed assistance there.

She did move aside when I requested, and didn't object to the actual application of meds, perhaps because I was noticeably cooperating. But wow, that was entirely new from her. My sweet baby.

Later, I needed a nap and retreated to bed for a few hours. I woke up with Gwyn laying on my hand, Tristan over my foot, and a feeling of contentment.
