Been thinking about what I want to do for my next birthday (it's not until mid-January but sometimes things need to be booked SUPER in advance), and for about a week I considered going to see Cursed Child in London because I haven't seen it yet, but something just occurred to me... I could take a trip to see the Titanic Exhibition at the SeaCity museum in Southampton.

Obviously Southampton is where Titanic began her maiden voyage, and apparently there's a 1:25 scale interactive model of the ship??? And a huge LEGO Titanic model??? I've literally just found my dream birthday activity and I'm only disappointed that my next birthday isn't until January!

This pocket watch belonged to Samuel "Sidney" Francis Sedunary, a third class steward on the RMS Titanic. The watch was recovered when Sidney's body was found by the crew of the Mackay-Bennett. He was buried at sea and this watch, along with a few other items found in his pockets, was sent to his wife, Madge Sedunary, who was pregnant at the time. Their son was born the following November, and was named after his father.

The watch now resides at the Seacity Museum in Southampton, UK. This is both the city where the Titanic sailed from, and the city where Sidney and Madge started their family.

Primary Research in Southampton (Part 2) - Major Project

After I visited the Southampton City Art Gallery, I went to the SeaCity Museum that showcases historic and contemporary work about the south coast town, and an exhibition about the Titanic. It was convenient to discover the exhibition because I am fascinated by conspiracy theories about the most well-known events throughout the history of humanity, including the sinking of the ship.

One of the stand-out types of medium in this museum were the posters. I’ve always had an interest in poster design as a commercial art form and as a general piece of art to communicate a message. The posters presented above are some examples that I liked the look of for different reasons: the typographical presentation of the orange carnival poster and it’s simplistic hierarchy, the Hornet hero poster that has a comic book-styled illustration, and the collection of posters about Southampton’s docs and locations.

The Titanic exhibition was a great interactive attraction that provided information and unknown facts about the ship and the famous tragic event that caused the Titanic to sink. There were boards with written information about the history of the Titanic’s journeys and life on the boat from different people’s perspectives.

It was quite emotional to walk around the exhibition looking at the infographics about the different people who were lost at sea on the day the Titanic hit the iceberg and sunk. On the other hand I liked the visual presentation of these infographics and the written description as I read, watched, and listened to audio profiles of the survivors and their personal experiences of being on the ship.

Hamburg is the gaudy, grimy Reeperbahn, and some of the most famous museums in Europe. It is the crazy, controversial carapace of the Elbephilharmonie. And, of course, the currywurst is actually the best.

Hamburg is more of a plough horse than a show pony. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and she is not easily shocked.

More staid than sensational, but none the less suffused by a breezy, bohemian vibe that is the legacy of literally centuries of decadent debauchery, Hamburg is more grit than glitz. The city of 'Moin moin' has little in common with Monte Carlo.

Heroic rather than hype ridden, Hamburg is earthy, excessive and headstrong. But one visit will never be enough...
