Favorite Food: Okay I’m the weirdo who doesn’t have favorite food. I have foods I’m okay with and I have foods I dislike, that’s it. And usually I eat it even if I dislike it.

Play Any Instruments?: I used to play a guitar a bit in primary school, but then we gave it away.

Random Fact: Hmm, well I never draw ears to that chibi-nollatooru-mascot thing I use in my profile pic. That’s because I have a minor hearing damage, it doesn't affect my everyday life in any way since I only don't hear very high and very low sounds, but since my ears are kinda “bad” I leave them out in a doodle.

What I’m Wearing: My pajamas: fluffy sweatpants (these are the best I swear) + fluffy oversized long sleeve shirt which says "Save the mermaids" and has a retarded-look mermaid on it. I usually wear a hoodie but it’s cold.

Dream Job: Writer or Voice/movie/theater actress. Actually I debuted as voice actress last December in an anime called “Last Hope” (spanish version), but I need to keep improving and be able to get better roles. I’m perfectly fine with only dubbing anime and videogames though, I love it. 

Dream Trip: My top priority is Japan, then New Zealand and then London.

otome/anime/manga tag

I was tagged by the lovely @artpills-blog​ (as shenanigumi)! I’ll do my best, but I’ve only ever played two otome games in my life, and I don’t watch anime or read manga, soooo I’m gonna bend the rules and include certain Tales games since they have anime adaptations.

Favorite otome/anime/manga characters:

Zelos Wilder (Tales of Symphonia): he’s a more interesting character in the game than the anime, but the anime is still better than that abomination they call a sequel, so… whatever. basically, I’m a sucker for deep characters who put up shallow façades, and if a forward and flirtatious triple agent doesn’t fit that bill, I don’t think anyone does.

Kazama Chikage (Hakuōki): I’ve talked at length about this one before, so there’s not much more new I can say here. suffice it to say that I love figuring out what makes a guy like him tick, since he’s a major villain on some routes and a grudging ally on others. the differences between routes fascinate me, and I adore his dry sense of humor whenever it comes out.

Jade Curtiss (Tales of the Abyss): hoo boy. this guy’s the ultimate badass, whether in the anime or game. (the anime is such a great adaptation that they’re almost interchangeable anyway, but I do wish they’d included him interrogating Dist.) but for real, I’m not sure I can put my love of him or the reasons behind it into actual words. he’s just… so… cool. also, he’s the sovereign king of trolls.

Rose (Tales of Zestiria): …okay, so I actually despise her anime incarnation… but in the game, she’s a total badass. in fact, she’s pretty much my ascendant incarnate. the way my best friend puts it, if she gets a certain look in her eyes, you don’t know if she’s going to kill you, fuck you, or sell you, but it’s going to be one of the three.

Saint-Germain (Code: Realize): this one wasn’t really my favorite game, and it’s been almost a year since I last picked it up, but I seem to recall loving him for his mystique and pseudo-villainy, and the fact that he strikes me as one of the deeper characters in the game. also, he’s from an otome and more in keeping with the original rules of this tag meme…

OkiChi and other ships...

​So I've seen this come up a couple times now, and both writing OkiChi and playing Kyoto Winds has made me realize that I have a pretty weird relationship with the ship, (If that makes sense) and I think my actual reasoning for favoring it is probably more than a little left-field of the norm. This stuff has been bouncing around in my head for quite a while, but I think now is a good time to clarify my stance on it since my story keeps popping up for people who have completely valid issues with OkiChi.

Please note that these are all personal reasons and I am not saying what you should or should not ship. (Why does this feel like the disclaimer at the start of a fanfic? 'I do not own blah blah blah...')

First of all, I find it hard to separate how I feel about the ship from how I feel about the route, since it's the story of the relationship. From a story telling point, I enjoy Okita's route more than the others. I like his growth as a character over the course of the route, as well as how he and Kaoru are like two sides to the same coin, with the real difference being that Okita had Kondou as well as Hijikata and the others in his life. It's like both of them looking into a mirror and seeing "what if?" I also just enjoy Kaoru as the villain more than Kazama. Plus there's the theme of forgiveness that runs through Okita's route. Chizuru also feels more central to the plot in his route than in most of the others. Yes the final fight is still between Kaoru and Okita, but Okita is only in it because of his feelings for Chizuru. With the exception of Harada, everyone else has more prominent reasons for fighting. Heisuke would have left to take care of Sannan even if Chizuru hadn't accompanied him. Hijikata and Kazama would have dueled regardless of if Chizuru had followed him to Ezo. Saito rides the line, but he would have made his own decision to fight with the Aizu and dueled Kazama (if he was there) even if Chizuru hadn't come with him. (I think that Chizuru-centricness is the reason why Saito takes a close 2nd and Harada 3rd for me in terms of ranking) Conversely Okita would never have fought Kaoru if Chizuru wasn't there. The entire plot turns on Kaoru's beef with Chizuru, and Okita is merely caught in the storm. Chizuru doesn’t feel ancillary to the climax event of the route.

Note: I haven't finished KW yet and I'd hate to judge the new ones on half a route

Purely from a personal level, Okita is my favorite of the guys, but not because of his biting sarcasm and lack of empathy and remorse. I have zero interest in the 'bad boy/bloodthirsty' stereotype that gets attached to him (which he admittedly earns), and in fact, a lot of his and Chizuru's interactions (as well as his personality in general) in the first half (and I'd say even up to 2/3) actually makes me uncomfortable with OkiChi. Like the scene where he scares the living daylights of the kids. Yeah, really really not okay. @impracticaldemon, @shenanigumi, and @hakusaitosan are completely right that Okita regularly blows right past the line from teasing into bullying when it comes to Chizuru because he doesn't care how she feels about it. He just wants a reaction/control. It took me a while to figure out why I kept coming back to him when my initial inclination is really toward characters like Harada and Saito.

The conclusion I came to was that the Okita I have a fondness for is actually the Okita at the end of his route because he has two traits that that become visible which happen to be more to my personal taste. The first is that his foremost love language is touch, which isn't all that unique given both Harada and Heisuke communicate this way as well. What I mean is his primary means of showing affection and giving comfort/reassurance takes the form of touch. To me, his vehement dislike of physical contact stems from a lack of trusting others (due to past experience) with something that is actually super important to him. The second is seeing teasing as a valid means of showing affection for someone. As soon as Okita genuinely starts to care for Chizuru, his teasing takes on a tone that's more in line with the idea that "you only tease those you love." He'll tease Chizuru, but he now cares about how she feels about it and he's quick to back off and apologize if it goes too far. Neither Harada nor Heisuke, nor really any of the other guys communicate this way and its what sets him apart for me. Maybe it's because my own family teases as a means of showing affection, but for me, there is a lot of nuance in teasing that changes how I interpret it. 

Note: I don't think Okita really 'teases' strangers or enemies, or even people he knows but dislikes, such as Yamazaki. Taunt/insult? yes. Tease? No. However barbed and in bad taste it is, he only teases those he cares about. Hijikata being a good example. Okita may not admit it, but the way he goes about getting under Hijikata's skin shows that cares and feels comfortable enough to do so.

So I'm left with a problem. I can’t hack off the first 2/3 of the game without losing why I like the story and I can't get the Okita I like without OkiChi, because Chizuru is the catalyst for his change. I will freely admit Okita is really not the best match for Chizuru, but unlike with the other guys, I'm not a huge fan of him without her in his life and the changes she encourages. This is also why his Kyoto Winds route fell so flat for me. Not only did I not get the payoff of the second half, leaving it at halfway made the route feel unrealistic because there was no longer a way for me to gloss over the problems OkiChi legitimately has. 

I guess you could say I ship it more for selfish reasons than for Chizuru's sake.

Final side note: One of the benefits of writing a modern AU, (besides that I don't know enough about Japanese culture to feel comfortable write in canon) is that I can realistically tone down his traits that I find off putting and frame him more in the light of how he is at the end of his route. Which may be why @impracticaldemon and @hakusaitosan mention it even though they don’t ship OkiChi. But I don’t know so you’ll have to ask them.

While I'm at it... (ignoring KW since it's only half the story and I haven't finished it)

Things I ship in order of preference: OkiChi, SaiChi, HaraSen (thanks to @impracticaldemon and Teachings of Demons), HaraChi, HeiChi, HijiChi

If we're just talking best for Chizuru and taking me out of the equation, I'd have to say HeiChi wins that hands down.

Things I don't ship: KazaChi (sorry, unlike Okita, Kazama has no redeeming qualities for me that would outweigh his negative ones) I don't tend to ship m/m, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying stories where the characters are well developed. Oh, and SaiLamp-san (better off as teacher and student :P )

If you don't see your ship, it's probably because I'm ambivalent about it.

Again, no offense is intended. Please feel free to disagree with me on any of this and ship whatever and whoever you want. Including Lamp-san.

Relationship: Single. Favourite colour: I like color combinations more than individual colors, and these have changed over time. When I was like eight, my favorite colors were pink, purple and sky blue.Nowadays, it’s:1. white, black, poppy red, ochre,2. burgundy or burnt orange, powder blue, white3. forest green, black and gold. Pets: None yet, but one day I would like to adopt a white cat, give it a red collar with a tiny silver bell and call it Mogget. If you have not read The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix, I highly recommend it. Wake up to: The dreadful sound of a standard plug-in alarm clock. Cats or dogs: Cats. I don’t think I have what it takes to be a dog person, though I still think they are cool.

Coke or pepsi: Neither. I rarely drink soda/pop/carbonated beverage, but if I do, it has to be Squirt. It’s a nostalgia thing. Day or Night: Night because it’s when I do my best thinking without interruptions. Text or call: Texting, is so much easier. I feel like a rambling fool if I have to leave a voicemail message. Lipstick or chapstick: What shade of lipstick? If it’s too bright or dark or red, I prefer chapstick. Muted rose  is my shade of choice. Also, no glossiness or sparkles.

Last book I read: Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden was the last book I completed. I am currently reading Japanese Tales edited and translated by Royall Tyler for the Pantheon Fairy Tale and Folklore Library. Next on my reading list will be an autobiography called Geisha of Gion by Mineko Iwasaki, a retired geisha, who sued Arthur Golden for basing his book too much on her life. Last song I listened to: “We Are the Dead” from the Diamond Dogs album by David Bowie. I’ve been playing it on repeat. Love the melancholy in the lyrics and instrumentation. Last movie I watched: Hacksaw Ridge (2016). A bit  bloody (well, it is a war movie), but the story was interesting, and the patriotism wasn’t too over the top. Top 3 TV shows: In no particular order, Sherlock BBC, Blackadder, also from BBC, and to my shame, Game of Thrones. Top 3 characters: Oh my! There are sooo many characters to choose from!

Again, in no particular order, I’ll pick Inigo Montoya (The Princess Bride book version) his back story at the end of Buttercup’s Baby made me sad :(

Next, I’ll choose Sherlock Holmes from the BBC series. I can relate to him so much.

Finally, I’ll choose Sabriel from the Old Kingdom Series, she is one of the few female hero characters I know that is still a badass in her 40s. Not that I’m in my 40’s, but sometimes I feel like it, and I know I’ll get there eventually.

Top 3 ships:How to begin…Shipping is a subject in which I don’t have much practical experience. This makes my tumblr account feel existential. I have seen/read enough to understand it, so here I go! I hope I’m doing this right. I’ll make a canon ship, a non-canon ship, and an OTP (Guys, I am  using the right lingo, right?)

I guess so, I dunno man. All I know was I wanted to tear my hair out playing his route first in Kaze no Shou because NO ONE had his route 100% right. 

I’m really glad that like... in the second game you just go and pick which guy’s route you want to do because this pick and choose thing is STRESSFUL! I’ll have to focus on getting Souma’s route straightened out next since it’s the literal worst if you’re going in blind.

okay, that takes care of the non-fic requests that have been sitting abandoned in my drafts for months!! apologies for the long absence, but I’ve been wanting to make a comeback for some weeks and have simply been too mentally exhausted to cope, so I hope it sticks this time.

I really want to replay, like, basically everything since it’s been so long, but first on the list… I finally got “Code: Realize ~ Wintertide Miracles” a couple months back and was holding out for December so like… I’ma be playing that to get in the holiday & otome spirit!! I probably won’t say too much about it while I’m playing it, but if I end up talking too much and you don’t wanna hear it, you know what tag to blacklist (assuming that works these days).

1.  Do you prefer chibis or more lifelike art?

To see or to draw? Generally I like the realistic style but not quite the super realistic ones. I admire them but if it’s identical to a photo we have cameras too don’t we. I also love seeing chibi art, especially if the picture tells some sort of story. Really the style doesn’t matter if it’s just nice picture to look at.

As for to draw, chibis are faster and kind of easier to do, so I think they’re great when I don’t have as much time. But it depends on my mood, I enjoy the process of drawing lifelike art more.

2.  Do you play computer games, console games or mobile games?

I haven’t had computer games for years, but I play console games quite often. I’m just sticking to my brothers’ game collection though. On my phone I just have the basic 2048.

3.  What platform do you use most for tumblr: mobile or computer?

Mostly computer. Mobile when I’m away from home like visiting my grandparents, but I sometimes have some troubles with posting on mobile so that’s why prefer computer.

Umm, perhaps Narnia The Silver Chair and my favorite character there is Puddleglum. He’s sweet funny looking creature who’s pessimistic when things are going well but always manages to find something positive when things seem hopeless.

5. Name something that you wished you owned (doesn’t have to be the most important thing, just something you’d really like to have).

Well for a few weeks I have wanted to try murdering some of my old barbie dolls’ faces with acetone and try repainting them, also reroot the hair and all that stuff, give them total makeover. So I guess I wish I’d had equipments to do so. At least for now.

6.   If you were out on a date, what is something your date could do that would make you happy, or more comfortable, or feel cared for?

Well If I’m uncomfrotable around my date I don’t think there’s anything they could do to fix that. Just end the awkward date. If I’m uncomfrotable for some other reasons then also just end the date I guess. I don’t know about the cared for part, if they care for me then it should show well enough in their normal actions and there’s no need to highlight that with special actions. As for making me happy, just get me somewhere with a cat or ice cream and I would be happy enough.

7.  Are you used to blankets, comforters, or duvets? (Or some or all.)

Used to as in what way? I have blankets when I sleep but I don’t use them for any other purpose. And I have never used either comforters or duvets at all.

8.  Describe your “clutter state”: dislike clutter but too tired/busy to fix the problem; dislike clutter and never/rarely have clutter; prefer to be tidy, but can live okay with clutter to a point; don’t mind clutter and generally know where things are - etc.

I generally know where things are but I do mind clutter as I have to wipe dust more or less regularly(because I have dust allergy), and clutter means just more work to do when I clean up a bit.

9.  Do you prefer plain bread or bread with lots of texture (whole grains, seeds, etc.)?

I like the bread with a lot of texture, but rather I just don’t want to have plain white bread. Rye bread is my favorite.

10.Name a preferred type or flavour of ice cream, muffin, donut, or some other  yummy thing you enjoy.

I like many flavous but I suppose rasberry would apply the best to all of these.

11. Name one thing that gives you a lot of satisfaction (example:  as a geek and completionist, I get something out of completing a game to 100%).

The process of doing something great. I love my drawings the most when they’re in sketching stage and when they’re just about to be finished, the feeling of creating. And in math I love the process of solving a problem the most. After I get the answer the whole counting I did before doesn’t seem as great.

—How and when you got into this glorious fandom:

I can’t entirely remember the year I started playing the game itself, because I got the PSP version in a trade for a DS game, but I do remember that I actually started with Warriors of the Shinsengumi first. I remember playing it the day I got the CE for the PSP release and when I mentioned I was playing it to these two boys that asked, they laughed and were like “oh, that date sim with bishis” or something. Anyway, I ended up taking an interest in the characters from that, and the historical factor really played into it!

OH BOY, aside from Chizuru, who I really thought developed really nice! I really think Heisuke had a lot of really nice development. Of course, they all get it with dlc and everything but

this is the one question i can never answer properly it’s always a “you tell me” kind of thing laughs 

—Least favorite character:

local “father” ruins lives, makes for an interesting villain (koudou) 

honestly I just squinted at him ahah there’s no real least favorite character as they all do play into the orchestration of the overall plot.

HEISUKE, I was playing through his kaze no shou route recently and had to keep pausing he’s so good i want to hold his hand

MAN this used to be Yamazaki but then he got a route and just sunrise bench, he got one in ssl and then shinkai but uhhh, if I had to say a new route, Shiranui !!

the one that stuck with me the least was saito’s honestly,,, if we’re throwing ssl in the mix, my least favorite is sannan’s b/c he’s not my type at all but, that’s a preference thing. I haven’t finished Kaze no Shou, nor do I have Hana no Shou yet (it’s ordered) but,,,,

but in all seriousness, I felt their development was one of the most natural in the game !! i’m heavily biased considering my recent playthrough of Heisuke’s route did involve a lot of pausing and crying but you know.

lowkey considering making a Tales blog à la Hakuōki’s @shenanigumi​, because even if other fandoms have taken over my life I still love the series. my main line of thinking is that maybe if I have an actual blog about it I’ll be more likely to actually share my numerous ideas?? idk, like there are some pretty great people out there between the character and/or ship wars, and I’d honestly like to get more involved in the fandom overall because of that. plus, the fics I write are just a drop in the ocean of my Tales thoughts (just tiny inconsequential stuff like Zaveid playing guitar, but still) and I never end up putting any of them out there for some reason, since I never did decide what this blog was for… I just don’t want to get in over my head or anything, but I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for some time since it’s my other home base fandom.

1. How tall are you? 5'2"  2. What color and style is your hair? Red, shoulder-length, no bangs, 90% of the time pulled in a ponytail or clip because I'm super lazy. 3. What color are your eyes? Blue 4. Do you wear glasses? Yep, though during the day I prefer to wear contacts -- I hate driving in glasses and I don't particularly like the way I look in glasses. 5. Do you wear braces? Been there, done that, not gonna do it again. 6. What is your fashion sense? Uhhh...idk that's really hard for me to answer because I just wear what I like. 75% of the time I'm in yoga pants because I work from home now lol. But I also absolutely love knee-high boots and wedge sandals during the warmer months. 7. Do you have any siblings? One sister. 8. What kind of student were/are you? The kind who did very well when she applied herself and half-assed things she didn't like or found frustrating/difficult. Undiagnosed inattentive type ADHD probably didn't help that. 9. What is your favorite subject? English literature, linguistics, rhetoric/composition. Yes, I was an English major...linguistics focus for undergrad, rhet/comp for grad school. I also enjoyed History. 10. Favorite TV shows? This is always so hard for me. I'm just gonna list several that pop into my head: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Hakuouki (though the game is soooo much better), M*A*S*H, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Vicar of Dibley, Fairy Tail, Eureka, unmmm probably a bunch more 11.
