This is a matinee report of the Nagoya performance of Cats performed by Shiki Theater Company on October 15, 2023.

On this day, I focused on Bombalurina, played by Harusa Yamazaki. She is very tall, has a good figure, and above all, is very beautiful, and is exactly what she admires.

In Bustopher Jones' number, Bustopher Jones, played by Kouhei Nakahashi, almost falls. Then, Skimbleshanks, played by Yui Kobayashi, Rumpus Cat, played by Kazuyuki Mandokoro, Carbucketty, played by Hiroki Terunuma, and Mistoffelees, played by Akito Iwamura, all panic. There is a choreography that supports Bustopher Jones.

And Bombalurina was behind them with a very surprised look on her face, which was really cute.

In the Asparagus number, Coricopat, played by Ryujiro Isshiki, looked at Bombalurina for a while. And when Bombalurina looked at him, Coricopat immediately looked away from him.

In the Mistoffelees number, Mistoffelees tears off Demeter's hair (but doesn't really tear it off) and performs a magic trick that lights up various places.

When Rumpelteazer, played by Ayu Shimizu, saw this, she tried to imitate Mistoffelees and tear off Bombalurina's hair. Bombalurina noticed this and grabbed Rumpelteazer's arm, throwing her hair far away. Rumpelteazer looked stunned. These two looked like sisters and were really cute.

It's been a while since I've posted any of my writing and this has been unfortunately sitting in my drafts for over a year. But here we are.

This was part of a Halloween prompt list that I knew I needed to use. Then I had the idea of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer dressing up as Skimbleshanks for Halloween. Then it snowballed into this extremely cute story about family along with lots of fluff.

The costumes the kids are wearing are inspired by the Shiki Skimbleshanks version. In this story, that costume is more like a uniform Skimble first wore when he began working. That’s the picture that Mungojerrie sees and shows Jenny. So the outfit is the following: A white long sleeve button-down shirt, black dress pants, a black vest with gold chains, a gold bell attached to a black choker for Jerrie and a gold necklace for Teazer, black dress shoes, a black hat with white/gold trim. I tried to make it seem like it was a human version though I don’t know if I succeeded or not. We will see.

I don't feel like I know Mexican Plato very well so I'll just say: sexuality chaos, he is definitely Macavity, he is a mad lad and we love him. also possesses a brain cell. occasionally.

AS FOR GILBERT.... my pretty boy... 🥺

Sexuality headcanon: Grey ace / gay. Took a long time for him to realise that Rumpelteazer and then Mistoffelees were hitting on him.

OTP: Mistoffelees. Also Munkustrap. (He turns into a squishy subby mess for the Commanding Thighs.)

NoTP: Carbuckety. In Shiki, Carbuckety is an adult cat who feels to me like Gilbert's dad. Oh, and Growltiger, when they're in pirate-land. (Gilbert is the lead Siamese and does an extended martial arts duel with Growltiger and, while that could be a potential enemies-to-lovers scenario... I'd rather not deal with that can of worms.)

BroTP: Shiki!Coricopat (equivalent to western Tumblebrutus). Look, here's Misto and Gilbert being food-stealing brats and Tumble being virtuous! And here Jenny is talking to both kittens: Tumble has his back to the camera and Gilbert is on the far right, leaning in eagerly and waiting his turn for attention (and pats?).

Also Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer. Rumpelteazer had a crush on him and he didn't realise for ages, but was therefore one of the first cats in the tribe he got close to, and they're now very good friends. And Mungojerrie just comes with the territory. If you're flopped around cuddling Rumpelteazer, you will soon find you're cuddling them both. It is law.

Random headcanon: Mostly arising out of my RP, but… backstory time! Orphaned street kitten, who, when young, made friends with a dog and from that dog learned a lot of his ideals about devotion and loyalty, moulding them into a form of chivalry. (I doubt the dog’s life ended happily.) Used to work for Griddlebone (hence leading the attack on Growltiger), who lived on another barge or similar, and was devoted to her in that chivalric sense: she was his lady, he would love her entirely (not a trace of sexual attraction there), he would devote himself to her and expect the equivalent reward of the love a lord/lady gives to their followers. When that tribe fell apart for unspecified reasons he ended up falling in with the Jellicles, and gradually became part of their tribe instead - but it was definitely a bit of a culture shock!

Oh, and he’s also a magical cat, but his magic comes from a very different source to Mistoffelees, channeling the energies in the ground below his paws. So he needs to be touching the ground to use it (and dancing helps to channel it), but it’s more solid and reliable than Mistoffelees’ erratic electrical magic.

Overall opinion: Confused baby, must be protected - but don’t underestimate him!

Day 20 of Jellicle ships month: Pouncival and Carbucketty!

(Usually) ultimate baby! And always with at least one eye patch.

Often (especially since the 1998 film) he wears the 'Carbucketty' London design on left, and is the Most Baby, even when he's named Pouncival.

However, sometimes (and especially in the last decade) he may seem to be older than Tumblebrutus. In the 2016 Broadway revival, Carbuckety was not one of the seven kittens - although Pouncival, Tumblebrutus, Mungojerrie, and Rumpelteazer were!

Shiki / Japanese tradition, here as elsewhere, differs. See below the cut for more details.

The brief and most characteristic history is:

Carbucketty is the UK-tradition name

Pouncival is the Broadway/Hamburg-tradition name - and though they were theoretically the same kitten, Pouncival's makeup gradually came to resemble that of London George more than that of London Carbucketty.

He is the clumsy boy kitten whereas Tumblebrutus is the acrobatic one (who, in some stage traditions, danced the pas de deux with Victoria and had a similar 'coming of age' role as she did)

However, in few productions, Pouncival was paired with Victoria and danced the pas de deux (eg, China 2012)

In the London and Broadway revival, both Pouncival and Carbucketty existed, but Pouncival had London's 'George' design, and Carbucketty had the London Carbucketty/Pouncival design. In the later US tour, Carbucketty vanished and only Pouncival remained - in the UK-based productions like Paris and the International/Asia tours, Carbucketty remained, and George became a named swing.

In Shiki tradition, Carbucketty is a dignified adult (possibly even the father of Gilbert, who is a golden!Alonzo analogue kitten), and has the same visual design as Carbucketty but no similarity in personality or blocking.

Usually, Carbucketty and/or Pouncival and/or George is one of the younger male cats, but, as with everything in this show, his emotional/sexual maturity varies according to interpretation.

Some actors have played him as completely baby kitten. Some - most recently, Jal Joshua in the 2020 Asia tour - have played up the 'come at me' sexy vibe and are definitely past the age of consent. Pick your poison!

Common (platonic or romantic) ships for his Western personae include:

any of the other kittens, of course - in any production you can find plenty of evidence, especially for tumblepounce

misto/pounce! Pouncibucketty is usually the first understudy for Mistoffelees and therefore does a lot of the ballet track with him, especially during the ball. This makes it easy to read him as Mistoffelees' apprentice or just a kid who admires the slightly older kid and tries to copy him in everything...

in some productions, Plato or Admetus or Alonzo - or, of course, Munkustrap! He often fixates on some older cats, so you can usually find one or more cats in any production whom he will adoringly imitate. This might be a romantic ship, a role model ship, or a familial ship, depending on the dynamics you choose.

For Shiki, he fits very well into many familiar Alonzo ships - such pairing up with Demeter and making a baby Gilbert!

And of course in many non-replica (or early replica) productions... Carbucketty is the name of a swing in productions where a Pouncival also exists! So it's technically possible for them both to exist in the same universe.

As with so many other characters and scenarios: canon is very very fluid, so pick and choose what bits you like, and go wild!

This is a report from when I went to see the performance of CATS by Shiki Theater Company in Nagoya on October 9, 2023.

It's about the Rum Tum Tugger number. Jellylorum, played by Ayaka Yoshida, Jemima, played by Naho Sakai, and Tantomile, played by Rika Takeshita, were so cute that fell in love with Rum Tum Tugger played by Kaminaga Tougo.

Then, Rumpus Cat played by Kazuyuki Mandokoro, Gilbert played by Asahi Goto, and Tumblebrutus played by Yuuma Ishida loudly sang the part "IS A TERRIBLE BORE!!!!!!!!" That was interesting.

During Growltiger's Last Stand, there was a scene where Growltiger sings loudly. At that time, Captain Gilbert of Siamese and his subordinate Bombalurina played by ｋHaruka Yamazaki were covering their ears and making noise.

I was sitting in an aisle seat that day. Rumpelteazer, played by Anzu Shimizu, was crawling on all fours next to her and looked me in the eye. It was so cute and I was so excited.

On July 22nd, I went to Nagoya with my friends to see Cats by Shiki Theater Company.

Below is the repo from fist bump time after that Cats matinee.

Rumpelteazer, played by Ms.Shimizu, approached me and my friends and gave us a fist bump. Furthermore, she made the same pose as I was excited, so it was the cutest.

Demeter, played by Ms.Fujita, has a beautiful carefree smile that made my heart beat faster. She seemed to shine like herself.

Asparagus, played by Mr. Nakahashi, had a very good physique when I saw it up close, and my heart fluttered unintentionally. His hands were also pretty rough and full of masculinity.

Ah, Oasis. That show which has been running for eight years, whose auditorium is relatively little policed compared to (eg) Broadway or Shiki, and yet of which we have as yet seen only isolated snippets here and there.

No full boot... until now. 👀

This footage is from cast 11, 13 April 2022. So, it's shortly before Benjamin McMillan (Munkustrap) left the tour, but after his boyfriend Jacob James Whawell (Alonzo) and friend Ryan Lay (Plato) left.

Mistoffelees is covered on this night by Will Geoghegan, first-cast Pouncival, and the footage is by a family friend of his, so it focusses on him a lot. (It also skips some measures here and there where, presumably, the editor thinks it's boring, like most of the overture, some of the white cat solo, etc.) Cori, Tanto, Tumble, and Pounce are not present on this night.

I'm still working out who's playing who, so I'll put a cast list below the cut. I'll add my commentary in reblogs, if anyone's interested in enthusing over it with me! But at a glance I can say definitely that Munk is Ben, Griz is Robyn, Bomba is Natalie, Teazer is Brittany, and Deut is Doug.

? before an actor's name means I haven't recognised them yet in that character, possibly because I just haven't focussed much on that character yet (I'm only a couple of numbers in and mostly I'm vibing instead of analysing). ? instead of an actor's name means 'i have no idea' (looking at you, alonzo).

Update: In a DM conversation with Ben McMillan I asked him who was playing Alonzo and his reply was that his first name is Ryan, he doesn't remember his surname, but he's now covering Munk until the new cast takes over. Further investigation reveals that this must be Ryan Ocampo from cast 8, a Plato actor who covered Munk and Tugger.
