Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Directed by: Isao Takahata
Based on true events
A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. A heart wrenching and dystopian movie where  the story-line progresses through the perspective of the children, Setsuko and Seita. It only shows how kids perceive wars and try to grasp the reality around them which changes very quickly. The 14 year old boy is forced to quickly grow up as the society shows it's back to all unfortunates, even his relatives. He also acknowledges that there is little he can do to improve upon his circumstances while he does his best in trying to look after his 4 year old sister. It's a story of tremendous loss and the pain that comes with it, the despair and strive for survival. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive. It makes us realize that wars may have winners or losers, it's infliction may be justified by war mongers but it never spares anyone, rich or poor, winner or loser, guilty or innocent and that both sides have hands drenched with blood.

Plot: A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive.
My Feelings: If you don’t cry while watching this film you may not have a soul.  Saying that this film will break your heart.  It puts WW2 in a perspective I think most westerners aren’t comfortable with.  Having to see the damage we did to the everyday likes of children is hard.
This film is not for the feint of heart.  It is about the slow death of two children after losing there mother.  I start crying as soon as the film starts these days.  There is no happy ending in this story.  But I think it’s an important story.  Understanding what war does to innocents is terrible but important.  Hopefully it will teach us to be less violent.  If you can stand the devastation of this film please give it a shot.

Isao Takahata (1935-2018) and the “Grave of the Fireflies”
Do you love the animated movie “Spirited Away”? Have you watched “Howl’s Moving Castle” more than once? Were you amazed at the environmental message of “Princess Mononoke”? If you answered “yes” to these questions, then you, probably, are, like me, an avid fan of films produced by Studio Ghibli.
When you think about these films, though, you probably connect them to the person of Hayao Miyazaki, who did write and direct the majority of films produced by Studio Ghibli. However, this studio and its productions were not the work of just one man. When it was founded in June 1985, four people set it up – Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, Yasoyoshi Tokuma, and IsaoTakahata, who passed away on April 5th of this year.
Tumblr media
Takahata became interested in animation from a young age. A graduate in French literature, he had seen the 1952 French animated film “The King and the Mockingbird”. After watching this film, he realised the potential of animation as an art form and, on the suggestion of a friend, applied to and was accepted to work for Toei Animation. (This is the studio responsible for Dragon Ball, Digimon and One Piece, among many other things.) After several successful years with Toei, he realised he could progress no further with them so he left . Eventually, after working for a couple of other companies, Takahata was approached by Miyazaki with the idea of setting up Studio Ghibli with Miyazaki as director and Takahata as producer. During their time together, Miayzaki directed the majority of Studio Ghibli films but in 1988, Takahata made his directorial debut with “Grave of the Fireflies”.
Tumblr media
“Grave of the Fireflies”, a film about the experiences of a young boy, Seita, and his very young sister Setsuko in Japan during the Second World War, is based on a short semi-autobiographical story by Akiyuki Nosaka and also on Takahata’s own experience of the bombing of Okoyama City by the Americans in 1945. It is an extremely sad and haunting tale which really emphasises the suffering brought about by war. Takahata always insisted that it was not an anti-war story but it is hard to watch this movie and not come to that conclusion. As with all Studio Ghibli films, the animation is superb and is accompanied by the music of Michio Mamiya. The experiences of Seita and Setsuko bring the tragedies of war home to the viewer on a personal level leaving out the glorification of battle that so often accompanies war movies, and this is just one element of so many that make it such a memorable film.
Tumblr media
(Okoyama City in 1945)
“Grave of the Fireflies” has received great praise and numerous awards, including a 1994 win in the Chicago Children’s Film Festival and a 97% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes. If you live in the UK, you may have had the chance to see this film on Film4 when it was aired a few days ago in a tribute to Takahata. If you did not see it then or if you live elsewhere, it’s well worth viewing. I’ve included a link below for Youtube, but beware, if you are sensitive you will be greatly affected by this tragic story which draws you in so that you feel the loneliness and desperation of Seito, Setsuko and others who suffered during that time.
Linguistic phun fact: Takahata wanted the roles to be played by children of an appropriate age with the appropriate accent for the Kobe region of Japan. It was believed that no child of Setsuko’s age could do this but Ayano Shiraishi, who was only 5 years old at the time, was cast in the part of Setsuko after speaking only two sentences in her audition. “My name is Ayano Shiraishi. I am 5 years old.”

Top 5 my favorite anime
1. The wallflower - The Wallflower is about a girl named Sunako who was called ugly by the first and only person to whom she confessed her love. This incident sparks a life change, and as a result Sunako shuns all forms of beauty, both in herself as well as in life. Concerned by her change for the worst, Sunako's aunt, the owner of a huge mansion where four very handsome high school students live (for free), demands the boys to transform her niece into the "perfect lady," and in return they will be able to continue living there for free. They are given a deadline and if they are unable to uphold their deal then they would have to either pay a lump sum of cash or vacate the premises. While the four of them manage to make Sunako physically beautiful enough to become a lady, the problem lies with her attitude and interests (which Sunako has no intention of changing). Up until the most recent release in the story, they manage to convince Sunako's aunt that her niece is indeed a lady befitting the mansion in which they live (and prevent the rent from skyrocketing to triple the required amount). However, in reality Sunako has not changed at all. Sunako has the tendency to spurt out in a nose bleed when seen by bright creatures, especially around Kyohei. It is a humorous tale following Sunako and the four boys through unusual and ridiculous situations where Sunako is confronted with many unwanted experiences of being a lady, while also channeling the idea of self and beauty.
2. Angels beats - The Angel Beats! anime series follows the story of Yuzuru Otonashi, a boy who lost his memories of life after death. Upon awakening in the afterlife, he meets Yuri Nakamura, a strong-willed girl who invites him to join the Shinda Sekai Sensen (SSS) (死んだ世界戦線, lit.
3. Seven deadly sins - The Seven Deadly Sins were once an active group of knights in the region of Britannia (ブリタニア Buritania), who disbanded after they supposedly plotted to overthrow the Liones Kingdom (リオネス王国 Rionesu Ōkoku). Their supposed defeat came at the hands of the Holy Knights, but rumors continued to persist that they were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights staged a coup d'état and captured the king, becoming the new, tyrannical rulers of the kingdom. The third princess, Elizabeth Liones, then starts out on a journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins and enlist their help in taking back the kingdom from the Holy Knights.
4. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day - What is the story about? On the surface, Anohana is the story of Menma, a girl who dies in an accident, then returns as a ghost to haunt her best friend, Jintan, five years later. The problem is, neither Menma or Jintan know why she has returned. ... Thus the story is ostensibly about them trying to figure out Menma's wish and fulfill it.
5. Grave of the fireflies - One of the best movie anime of them all , i love it because it has a vibe of World War II and its based on True story about Description A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Blog about Film Grave of Fireflies ( by Ender)
Grave of Fireflies is the  Japanese animated film produced in 1988 animation studio Ghibli written and directed by director Takahata Isao. The film is based on Nosaka Akiyuki's novel of the same name, which the author wrote in semi-autobiographical form as an apology to the author's own sister. Like other Ghibli works, the film is notable for its high quality both in terms of art and image. Grave of Fireflies is one of the animated film that shows the world clearly about the harshness of a difficult life, and the suffering of losing precious people in life because of war.
Tumblr media
The beginning of the film was on November 15, 1945, the short day after the end of the Second World War, with the image of a poor boy with ragged clothes, a thin, pale face. with a weak body, the stench was rising. He sat under the pillars of Sannomiya Station, dying of starvation.  Later that night, a janitor removes his body and digs through his possessions, finding nothing but a candy tin containing ashes and a few fragments of bone which he throws away into a nearby field. From the tin springs the spirit of the young boy followed by his little sister along with a cloud of fireflies. The spirit of the young boy, Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi, English: J. Robert Spencer), narrates the story of how he and his sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi, English: Rhoda Chrosite), fared in the wake of the firebombings of Kobe during the war.
Tumblr media
14-year-old Seita and 4-year-old Setsuko live with their mother (Yoshiko Shinohara) comfortably in Kobe while their father serves as a captain in the Imperial Japanese Navy. One day, while hiding what was left of the house, the siren signaled the plane to drop the bomb. The children's mother, who suffers from a heart condition, puts Setsuko in the care of her older brother and instructs him to secure the home while she goes ahead to a bomb shelter. Hundreds of incendiary bombs are dropped on the city and most of the civilians are caught off-guard. Luckily, Seita and Setsuko escaped those blazing bombs and were safe to find a shelter. After the bombing, almost everything was ruined including the homes of the two children. Safe to be able to go out, the two children began to look for their mother when told if escaping death come under the original old tree and wait for her there. Unfortunately, the mothers of the children were not fortunate to have been injured while helping the escape. They find her at a makeshift clinic set up within a school, horribly burnt and covered head to foot with bloody bandages. She dies a short time later and is cremated in a mass grave with other casualties.
Despite their loss, Seita is determined to care for Setsuko and protect her at all costs. They travel to the home of their aunt (Akemi Yamaguchi) who allows them to stay but convinces Seita to sell his mother's kimonos for rice. While living there, Seita goes out to retrieve leftover supplies he had buried in the ground before the bombing and gives them all to his aunt, however, he keeps one tin of fruit drops for himself. But gradually Saita's beginner started to get annoyed with the presence of the two children. She claimed that the scarcity of food and water because of the war, while the two kids were clinging to get a piece of rice and did not go to work or find a job to help her. She started being selfish when she said she wouldn't cook for them anymore and made us buy rice and food to eat ourselves. Tired of his aunt's insults, Seita decides to leave with Setsuko and care for her on his own. They find refuge inside an abandoned bomb shelter and release fireflies within for light. Come morning, Setsuko is horrified to find that all the fireflies have died. She creates a grave for them in the dirt and Seita realizes the depth of her understanding when she asks him why their mother had to die too.
Tumblr media
The summary is only half of the story, but we can also see that the harshness of the bitterness that war brings to people is too painful. Poverty has made people more desperate and selfish to the people around them and the pitiful images of the children who have to suffer because of what the war brings are too cruel, evil

This was actually our play when we were in 8th grade. It portrays the life of the siblings after they have survived the second world war.
