Europe 2022 - Day 22 - Bamberg
Last full day in Bavaria, and Julia was going to make sure we made the most of it. We had a bit of a sleep-in, and then it was off to Julia and Leonie’s college town, Bamberg.
Now it’s important to note here that of all the German cities I had heard about, this one had the most hype. When Leonie and Julia were in portland it was “Bamberg”-this and “Bamberg”-that. So I was expecting nothing short of some amazing Disney-type magic.
Well wouldn’t you know it, it did not disappoint. It was beautiful. We started off at a bridge with a manmade island in the middle where they finished building the town hall in 1467, you know, more than a full 300 years before the U.S. declared its independence, and actually more years before than the U.S. has even been a country.
Tumblr media
The we went a’walkin’. I also got to try a smoked beer, which was very interesting!
Tumblr media
We saw the Bamberg Cathedral, finished in the 13th century and the only place north of the Alps that has a grave of a pope. It also had a cool split-level vibe I had not seen in a church before. We also saw a rose garden in the same area, and we also hi-fived, cuz why not?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stopped for lunch, where I was treated to another regional dish. Known as Schäufele, it is the pork shoulder, cut in such a way that when the cooked meat comes off the bone, the shoulder blade looks like a small shovel, or shaufel. It is seasoned and fried in a pan to get the crispiness. It was served with a potato dumpling and pureed kale.
Tumblr media
After lunch we continued on our Bambergian tour, getting closer to the university. We saw Little Venice:
Tumblr media
And of course, had some ice cream. But the weather, which had been mercurial all day, was beginning to turn a bit darker (see above photo.) After some regulatory ice cream, we headed out to the next destination.
After Bamberg, we started going to smaller towns in the area, and this is where it gets fuzzy for me. We saw lots of little towns between Bamberg and Hausen, and I cannot remember them all. We started by going to the town of Julia’s boyfriend, Ludwig. It was very nice, but because Julia would not want to live there in the possible future (she loves her own town too much), we joked that we needed to tell Ludwig how ugly his town was. Once we picked him up, we went to a chapel that overlooked the valley.
Tumblr media
Then after that, we took a leisurely hike through some fields to an old castle that had fallen long ago. Still, the view was beautiful.
After that, we went to another beautiful quant village, this one being known for burning witches. And boy were they proud of it - they had a museum and everything! No different than Salem, Massachusetts, I suppose.
Tumblr media
After that, we went to a local restaurant/bar called Gasthaus Zimmerman, where I had a regional dish, soft cheese mixed with onion and served with bread.
Tumblr media
Also, I saw an almost full moon creeping up behind the town, and snapped a pic, Usually these don’t develop well, but this one wasn’t bad!
Tumblr media
After dropping Ludwig back in his town where he had plans with his buddies to watch the Ironman triathlon (and he and Julia were going to a Bundesliga 2 soccer match the next day - how do these people do it?) we made it home around 9:00-9:30, and I crashed out. Tomorrow was travel day, and I needed some sleep.

The post-lunchtime crowd at The Porterhouse Temple Bar, Parliament Street, Dublin.
(sigh) This was once the secondary-flagship pub of a small-town enterprise that wanted to challenge Big Irish Beer with microbrew and a wide palette of imported beers—and did so, successfully, for a couple/few decades: a frequent thorn in “Uncle Arthur’s” butt, especially when they won the Best Stout in the World award out from under Guinness a couple of times.
Tumblr media
They expanded into the UK and other markets, and their home pubs had a broad selection of foreign beers. (Early on, if you brought them a cool new one, your next drink after that was free.) But COVID hit them hard, and their center-city locations—one of which had the Best People-Watching Window in Dublin—have now for survival’s sake been turned into concrete-lined post-millennial drinking dens or small-plate joints.
And how long will this place last? (sigh)
[insert woman-shakes-fist-at-cloud.jpg] Dammit.
…Anyway: here is @petermorwood’s Schlenkerle Helles, a lager from a German brewery based in Bamberg that’s known for making a rightfully famous smoked beer.

I’m subscribed to about 80 Youtube channels of various subjects, and The Teeside Chef is one of the foodie ones. He’s an entertaining presenter (dry, self-deprecating humour) with really good recipes.
@dduane and I also make a really good Steak & Guinness Pie, though ours doesn’t have mushrooms or marrow (yet).
OTOH, something we often add is some chopped smoked bacon or smoked pork belly; it goes well with the Guinness, and even better with Schlenkerla Rauchbier (smoked dark beer from Franconia) which we can get either from Bamberg by the case, or in smaller quantities from a couple of Irish sources.
Either way, yum... :->

Today, we're embarking on a virtual journey to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Bamberg in Germany, where history, culture, and architectural beauty come together in a harmonious blend.

In 1993, Bamberg was granted UNESCO World Heritage status, recognizing its profound historical and cultural importance. It's a place where the past and the present merge seamlessly.
Tumblr media
The heart of Bamberg is its Altstadt, an enchanting maze of cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and winding alleys. It's like stepping into a storybook.
The Bamberg Cathedral, or Bamberger Dom, is a breathtaking Romanesque structure that dominates the town's skyline. Its four towers are a symbol of Bamberg's religious heritage.
The Altes Rathaus, located on an island in the middle of the Regnitz River, is an iconic half-timbered building that has become a symbol of the town.
For panoramic views of Bamberg, head to the Rose Garden, a serene spot with beautiful flowers and vistas over the old town.
Bamberg is renowned for its beer culture, and it's home to nine historic breweries. Don't miss the chance to try the local Rauchbier (smoked beer) and explore the beer gardens.
Today, Bamberg is not just a historical relic but a cultural hub that hosts events, festivals, and exhibitions celebrating the town's rich heritage and the enduring charm of its architecture.

Saturday, August 6 - we went to the cutest town today. Bamberg is right on a few rivers. The houses are on the rivers and even slanted a little because of settlement. The town hall is in the middle of the bridge. 800 years ago there was the church land on one side of river. The town was on the other side of the river. The bishop said that the town could not build their house on the church side so they built it on the border. Which was the middle of the river.
It is also home to the oldest brewery in Germany dating from the 12 century. That brewery is home to smoked beer. This is now Neil’s favorite!
It was a beautiful day to check out another beautiful town.

Smoke and Mirrors
I try to be open minded. I try to find something good in every beer style. I try really hard, but I can’t really get behind Rauchbier. Yet, at the bottle shop last week I found a bottle of Schlenkerla Marzen in my basket. I didn’t put it there, but I brought it home anyway.
The smokey lager is native to Bamberg, Germany, but examples are brewed as near as Burnside Brewing and Heater Allen. The key ingredient is malt that’s been dried over a roaring fire. The smoke seeps into the malt and gives the beer it’s distinct scent. Schlenkerla malts their own grain and dries it over beechwood fires.
It smells like ham.
I haven’t eaten meat in a decade, but I still know what bacon smells like, and that’s what the beer smells like. It’s weird and slightly off putting. It’s weirdly savory, and the malty sweetness doesn’t make it any better. It’s really hard to get into the flavor at first. The first sip is weird and fun. The third one is just weird. And yet. I drank the whole thing. I didn’t dump it out. Schlenkerla has been making their smoked beer for six generations, so they must be doing something right. After half a pint the balance comes into focus. I got used to the smoke, even if I never really started to enjoy it.
I’ve enjoyed smoked malt before. In small doses, smoked can give a stout some added depth, but all smoke, all the time is just too much for me.

Stop into Portland or Burlington, March 5th, and celebrate Smoke Fest, presented by Chuckanut Brewery.
Press Release
Tumblr media
Historically all beers were smoky due to the fires on which they were brewed as well as smoking the malt as it dried during the malting process. Now smoke beers are a rare, special treat and hard to find at that, but Chuckanut Brewery is celebrating these delicious beers with a Smoke Fest. Chuckanut’s P. Nut Beer Hall in Portland and South Nut Brewery & Tap Room will be hosting Smoke Fest on March 5 in celebration of smoke lagers! Both locations will have three smoke beers on tap: Grodziskie Polish Lager, Rauch Marzen Lager and Rauch Helles Lager. All three beers use a different variation of smoke malts and are unique in color and flavor. To help our communities in wildfire relief Chuckanut will be donating $1 of each smoke beer sold at both locations on March 5 to Direct Relief an organization that supports firemen and people who have been affected by wildfires. The festivities will include a brewery Open House at South Nut with free brewery tours from 12-4 pm and food pairings ordered from local Skagit Valley Provisions and Skagit Landing Restaurant. At P. Nut in Portland Poblano Pepper Food Truck will be on site as well as Sip & Knit with its first meet up (no charge) for those that want to knit while they sip their beers!
Grodziskie is an old Polish style beer sometimes referred to as “Polish Champagne” that’s brewed with oak smoked wheat malt. It has a subtle smoky flavor and finishes dry as a bone due to the use of the wheat malt. Grodziskie has mineral notes on the nose and great back-end vanilla on the palate. Weighing in at a whopping 3% ABV this beer is extremely crushable. On the other hand, Rauch Marzen Lager is a more medium bodied amber colored beer. Known as the beer from Bamberg, every brewery in Bamberg, Germany where this style continues to be brewed, makes their own rendition of a Beechwood smoked malt lager. The complicated malt bill used in a Rauch Marzen rewards one with a balanced malt/hop combination covered in smokiness! Chuckanut Rauch Marzen Lager is modeled after the style Spezial Brewery in Bamberg makes. And last but not least, the Rauch Helles Lager also uses Beechwood smoked malt but in the body of a Helles (light colored) beer. This rauch bier has the body of a Marzen but the color and lightness of a Helles Lager. With its well-developed bready flavors and elegant maltiness Rauch Helles has an added layer of smokiness too! All smoke beers are great food beers and Chuckanut would like you to experience the possibilities with the presence of a Mexican food truck in Portland and two different pairings created by local food purveyors in Skagit Valley. Make sure to visit Chuckanut’s P. Nut Beer Hall and the South Nut Tap Room for some new smoky beer fun on March 5! See you there!
Chuckanut Brewery’s P Nut Beer Hall is located at 920 SE Caruthers St, Portland, OR 97214. Chuckanut Brewery & Tap Room is located in the heart of Skagit Valley at 11937 Higgins Airport Way, Burlington, WA at the Port of Skagit. Chuckanut has won multiple awards from the GABF, World Beer Cup and WA Beer Awards. Both locations welcome guests of all ages! this one bears mention not because it's the first rauchbier (smoked beer) after more than a dozen golden colored lagers and wheat beers but the term German Craft Beer is something I've not seen before. Bah it's like the others in it's mediocrity and would not be mistaken for a proper smoked beer from a Bamberg brewer.

83, 85, 90
83: what’s some of your favorite album art?
I remember when the album art for Artpop came out and I absolutely lost it. It’s just so evocative and very avant-garde. So many people don’t appreciate that era but it was so ahead of its time and now so much pop music sounds like that. And that artwork really is so very *chef’s kiss*
85: do you read comics? what are your faves?
I’ve read a few webcomics. Check, Please! is obviously one of my favorites. But I also really enjoyed reading Castle Swimmer.
90: talk about your one of you favorite cities.
Ok so Bamberg is a city in Germany. It’s intersected by two (I think it’s two, could be very wrong) rivers. It’s got some really pretty architecture, some beautiful places to go visit. I was only there for a few days, but I really fell in love with it. It’s also home to a historic brewery. It’s the first place that smoked beer was brewed. Really cool place.
