Fantastic Voyage
July's Featured Release
Tumblr media
Destination Unknown 2 - Pig & Dan (2022, Bedrock Records) the Spanish duo, who have been active since the early '00s, with releases often categorized under tech-house and post-progressive house elements via their self-run Submission Records label. They've pulled the attention of some crucial, well-respected labels and had put out full-length releases on Cocoon, Soma Quality and Bedrock where the first chapter of Destination Unknown was issued.
Destination Unknown 2 is a journey of chill-out, rather than another compilation of 12" tracks. Remnants of DnB and dub influences ebb and flow throughout the set, marking points of soul and depth to the ears, with absolutely no trace of tech-house interference.

with neko being the current main character of lookism fandom disk-horse, i feel an urge to share my two-cents on her, so here we go. (long rant ahead)
soma mitsuki is an excellent antagonist (or as good as we could hope for, with ptj’s questionable record of writing women characters…). her intentions and actions are enough to make many readers double over with rage, which i think is testament to how well she’s written.
she revived a collapsing casino, and turned it into an empire. she managed to recruit the 2A executives to become her henchmen and follow her to a foreign country, and they remained loyal to her upto the very end.
she isn’t like vivi, the pampered daughter of a billionaire that would rather traumatise unregistered children and brainwash burn victims to protect his daughter, than rehabilitate her. unlike vivi, she doesn’t have xiaolung’s devotion. throughout her growing up, she has only seen the worst of men. even ryuhei, despite his feelings for her, behaved in an absolutely gross way during their first meeting.
her obsession with sinu is infinitely interesting - she’s drawn to him not because of lust, but due to his sacrifice. it’s the first time she’s seen any man act outside of his own needs, and she wants to be on the receiving end of his sacrifice, even if it means she has to treat sinu like an object… such an obsession is selfish. it’s disgusting. it’s terrifying. but all of this asserts her position as a commendable antagonist.
she’s an exceptionally capable business woman, a quality that’s seen in men like yujin, gun, samuel, and olly - all of whom are equally terrible, but better-liked than mitsuki.
mitsuki is manipulative, but so are characters like gun (with his successors) and jake (with big deal during juvie and even after his release).
she’s a charismatic leader, much like jake. In fact, both of them are the neglected children of lecherous fathers who left them with only burdens and problems. both are touched by sinu’s passion and romance. both of them sit at the top of the food chain and make the ones below fight (mitsuki in the circus, and jake in juvie). however, both of their love for sinu diverges their roads as protagonist and antagonist - jake wants sinu to be happy, even if it’s far from himself. mitsuki only wants sinu to be by her side, even if he’s never truly happy.
so, i feel that it’s time that we realise that being like soma mitsuki was a VERY likely outcome if characters that we love and adore were placed under slightly different circumstances, or that we give characters that are no different from her a LOT less heat.

Today's mix:
Past Lessons / Future Theories by Slam 2000 Tech-House / Techno / House / Deep House
Oh, hell yes, folks. Today, we've got an exquisite turn-of-the-millennium double-disc mix, courtesy of Glasgow's greatest techno DJ pair to ever do it, Slam. Back in the early 90s, these guys were part of the group that was responsible for co-founding the terrific Soma Quality Recordings label—also based out of Glasgow—and these days they play sets all across the globe, have their very own festival, and host one of techno's most popular weekly podcasts too: Slam Radio. Needless to say, in a genre whose overall ephemerality tends to be so key, and with so many acts who debuted in the early 90s having naturally fallen by the wayside, the fact that these two have managed to become, and still remain, an institution in this space is such a commendably rare feat in and of itself 👏. And a mix like this serves as a stellar example as to why they've managed to stick around and stay in the top echelon of techno DJs for so long. Past Lessons / Future Theories certainly doesn't catch Slam in their earliest days, but it's still only the second mix of theirs to ever be released commercially, and the first since 1996's Psychotrance 4, on Moonshine Music. And while the first disc is the far chiller of the two and sees them tying to shy away from dropping the straight-up techno jams, it's the second disc where they decide to really channel their true, uninhibited inner selves, and get down to brass tacks 😤.
Now, while most mixes tend to have names that you really shouldn't read too much into, I think there's a meaning behind this one's in particular, and that it's really exemplified by a single track: Josh Wink and Lil' Louis' "How's Your Evening So Far?" Real house heads who know their history are already undoubtedly familiar with the name Lil' Louis, as he's the guy who made one of the biggest ever house tunes of the 1980s, with the warm and chuggingly sensual "French Kiss." But with this track from 2000 here, Philadelphia's Josh Wink manages to revive that classic while simultaneously cozily wrapping it in his own techno knowhow, yielding a total banger that, over 20 years later, still satisfies plentifully 😌. So, if Past Lessons / Future Theories means taking what you've already learned and then building something new and lasting directly on top of it, then Wink really knocked that whole concept out of the damn park with this song here.
And also, while this second disc largely seems to run a slightly dark, yet eclectic contemporary techno gamut of sorts, I still definitely gotta give it up especially for Mad Mike Banks' "String Mix" of The Aztec Mystic's "Jaguar." This is a tune that builds itself in anticipation to a boiling point with its very prominent, sharp, and dramatic orchestral string work, with those strings eventually transitioning into creakily seesawing Hitchcockian stabs when the drumbeat finally comes in at the end. Such a phenomenal track!
So, in all honesty, after listening to this album's first disc, I was starting to get ready to conclude that while Slam had been trusted veteran DJs for a good while by the year 2000, this release itself didn't actually have the transcendent 'wow' factor that you might expect. But evidently, these guys were just saving up all their magic for disc 2. Disc 1 isn't a total skipper by any means, but that second one really shows you what these Glasgow legends are capable of weaving together, and to that end, why they've managed to outlast almost all of their peers as well.
Listen to CD1 here. Listen to CD2 here.

Secret Circuit - Green Mirror - new double-length album from one of the best in electronica
Invisible Inc is over the moon to finally be announcing this long-awaited double album of new music by Secret Circuit. Presented here are 21 new pieces (or 22 if you count the bandcamp-exclusive digital bonus) recorded between 2020 and 2022 which capture that spacey, otherworldly quality Secret Circuit is known for but they also very much veer into the warmer, earthier and generally more ambient textural territories of his E Ruscha V and Only Thingz work...an altogether softer sensibility. The fact that the second disc of the double album is primarily ambient further confuses the issue! But Secret Circuit this most definitely is! From a plethora of demos (40+) Invisible Inc label boss GK Machine wanted to distill these down and explore a side of Ruscha's that he felt hadn't been heard before, focussing on Ruscha's more emotive yet at the same time experimental side. Is that a paradox? Well, let's say only very rarely do we hear modular synths doing something so human-sounding, and when these are juxtaposed alongside slide guitars, live bass and vocodered vocals, we have something very special indeed. Then there's the artwork...all lovingly drawn by E Ruscha V himself and landing on our desk long after the record had gone into production and test pressings delivered and approved. The package is made complete with a double-sided colour insert with liner notes and another of Ruscha's mind-warping doodles. Oh and the liner notes are written in reverse so you'll need a mirror to read them. Of course they are! To cut a long story short, everything about this release is archetypal classic Secret Circuit and couldn't be anyone else. A highpoint for the label in 2023, no doubt. And we hope you love it as much as we do. INVINC HQ

17/9 Pan-Pot + Mattia Trani fanno scatenare Winter Opening @ Bolgia - Bergamo
///

1990s Techno Playlist
Got a huge update for this playlist that I somehow haven’t managed to touch in months 😧. Well, actually, let me clarify that...the update’s huge for YouTube, but not so much for Spotify, since Spotify’s techno library is, sadly, severely lacking. I mean, most of the tracks I’m adding today come from one of the most important labels in techno history, Berlin’s Tresor, and Spotify has barely any of them! For shame, Spotify!
Funny though, the two Tresor tracks that I was able to find on Spotify actually now end up bookending the playlist: X-101′s “Sonic Destroyer,” a classic, hard-nosed, buzzing early 90s raver, and Hiroaki Iizuka’s “Tera,” one of those rhythmically walloping and super hypnotic, tribal kinds of grooves. Plus, I also threw in probably one of the most oddball tracks to ever chart in the top 5 in the UK with Underworld’s “Born Slippy,” which earned its fame thanks to its inclusion in the 1996 film, Trainspotting. Some people have even gone so far as to call that song electronic music’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
X-101 - “Sonic Destroyer” Underworld - “Born Slippy” Hiroaki Iizuka - “Tera”
Now, for the YouTubes: it’s a lot. I added a bunch of songs that I’d struggled to find previously from a trio of legendary labels: Paris’ F Communications, the Netherlands’ Djax-Up-Beats, and Glasgow’s Soma Quality Recordings. I also added some great tracks that were showcased on Josh Wink’s Profound Sounds, Vol. 1 mix from 1999. And on top of that, I poured in a good bunch from the Tresor label too.
And I think, since this is something of an immense update, that if you want the true cream of the crop here within all of these adds, you should go towards the end of the playlist and find “Bored Meat” by Berlin’s DisX3 and “Mala Mazza” by Amsterdam’s Diskordia. Both of those tracks are featured on Tresor’s Annex 3 compilation, and while all the songs in this update are great, it’s those two particular beauties especially, which just so happen to be lined up back-to-back, that are simply *on another level* to me 😌. And don’t sleep on Funk D’Void’s “V-Ger” either! 🤩
Here’s a list of tracks from the update that only exclusively appear on YouTube and not on Spotify:
Laurent Garnier - “Breathless (Edit)” Phaedrus - “Tesla” Aurora Borealis - “The Milky Way (Edit)” Holy Ghost - “MK Ultra” Funk D’Void - “V-Ger” Group X - “Journey” Marko Laine - “So What” Blue Arsed Fly - “Bucket” Cristian Vogel - “Lock Onto the Signal” Pacou - “T.4″ Naohisa Furusawa - “E++” Marshall Jefferson - “The Horse” Maas - “Look At Me Now Falling (I.Cube Simple Mix)” Tobias Schmidt - “Cosmetic Pollution” Blaze - “Lovelee Dae (Eight Miles High Mix)” DisX 3 - “The Wide Theatre” Stacey Pullen Presents Black Odyssey - “Sweat” Christian Smith & John Selway - “Silver” Josh Wink - “Untitled” The Advent - “Sketched for Life (Salsa mix)” Dave Tarrida - “Mouse Catcher General” DisX3 - “Bored Meat” Diskordia - “Mala Mazza” Kijitora - “Butterfly Control”
Playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So now this thing is really finally starting to take shape, at least on YouTube. We’ve got about 3 hours and 20 minutes worth of songs on Spotify, but almost 7 hours now on Youtube. And there’s still so much more to add 😅.
But wait, we’re still not done yet! Also have another 90s techno playlist that’s specifically focused on the year 1997. Again, the Spotify one is far inferior to the YouTube one:
Spotify / YouTube / YouTube Music
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

Slam Effect
February's Featured Release
Tumblr media
Final Conflict EP - Slam (2021, Soma Quality Recordings) is yet another addition to the veteran streak featured on Vicious Cycles Radio. Glasgow/UK based production and DJ team (Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan) are from the heydays of techno (2nd wave) and progressive house. As members of Slam, and co-founders of Soma Quality Recordings, where Daft Punk (who very recently announced their retirement as a duo) had debuted on this label (1993 and onward), but their releases and remixes date back as far as 1990. Slam are a well sought-after remixer, as their tight productions are uniform to the ear, essential tools for the DJ.
From bangers to rinse, this EP is a recent example of their capability. For February's episode, we've chose Cosmo Disko as it's something you'd hear around 4 am or at sunrise somewhere. It borrows the bare essentials of disco, stripped down to its beat and baseline, making a direct and transparent connection between that sound and techno. Out now on Soma!
