The Group of Seven nations announced Tuesday its member nations would end the use of “unabated” coal by 2035, but left the door open for countries to stretch that deadline in particular contexts.

In a communiqué published after talks between energy, climate and environment ministers in Turin, Italy, the group announced it had committed to “phase out existing unabated coal power generation in our energy systems during the first half of 2030s,” in a climate policy breakthrough that G7 negotiators had previously failed to achieve in several years of talks.

But by referring to “unabated” coal, the agreement leaves room for countries to use the fossil fuel past 2035 if their carbon pollution is captured before entering the atmosphere.

The agreement also includes a caveat that countries could choose “a timeline consistent with keeping a limit of 1.5°C temperature rise within reach, in line with countries’ net-zero pathways.”

That caveat appears to allow those countries to keep using coal past 2035, as long as their overall national emissions won’t contribute to global warming of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Science shows that some of the planet’s ecosystems will reach tipping points or struggle to adapt beyond that point.

Torino - souvenir della protesta contro il G7 (29/04/2024)

Last night I took part in the protest organized by students organizations and other political groups of Turin against the G7. The police were merciless. They used hoses on us, tear gas and beat us with truncheons. While the protest died down and we went to gather at a meeting point I looked at the ground and saw a pool of blood. It was dark, the only light was an orange tint that came from the street lamps, and still this blood had a deep red colour.

In the rush of things I couldn't take a picture and this morning I came back to photograph it. This was all that remained.

Ieri notte ho partecipato alla protesta organizzata dai gruppi studenteschi e dai centri sociali di Torino contro il G7. La polizia è stata spietata. Hanno usato gli idranti, i lacrimogeni e ci hanno manganellati. Mentre la protesta finiva e andavamo a riunirci in un punto di incontro ho guardato a terra e ho visto una pozza di sangue. Era buio, l'unica luce era quella arancione-giallastra dei lampioni, ma il sangue era comunque rosso scuro.

Nella fretta non ho fatto una foto ma sono tornato questa mattina per fotografarlo. Questo è tutto quello che restava.

G7 delayed decision on use of frozen Russian assets until June

The G7 has postponed a decision on the use of frozen Russian assets until June, according to a statement issued by the G7 foreign ministers following their meeting in Capri.

The document notes that the parties will continue to study options “in accordance with our legal systems and international law.” The results of the “study” will be presented at a meeting of G7 leaders in June.

Washington supports the confiscation of Russian assets, while EU countries say this is a violation of international law, insisting that the profits from the assets be used in Ukraine’s favour.

On Thursday, European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis expressed hope that the European Union, which holds the lion’s share of the frozen assets, would approve in the coming months a separate EU measure to use profits or interest earned from the assets to help Ukraine.

Hey could someone do me a favor and tell me exactly how my blood sugar was "so low" last night and this morning that my Dexcom kept waking me up with those terrifying URGENT LOW alarms (that I mostly just ignored and didn't treat because I felt absolutely fine), but now that I'm up and moving around (without eating), the sensor is reading in the low 200s?

(I don't sleep on my sensor, so it's not compression lows. Maybe just lack-of-blood-flow lows or let's-fuck-with-her-lol lows.)
