Wait okay. I’ve been going thru a walkthrough of the teal mask for analysis making purposes and I just realized, Kieran speaks like, way more formally in Indigo Disk. Like he had an implied country-ish accent in Teal Mask but by the time we see him again it seems to be gone…

Soy's real name is Shun Kanou (finally clearing up the Jun vs. Shun and Kanou vs. Kana thing)
Kii's name is, as previously translated, Kiyoshi Kurotani
Second Palace ruler's name is Hiromu Miyazawa

Being bilingual sometimes sucks bc I remember a while ago I wanted to write this reinochi fic where there’s was this visual gag of sorts that only worked in Spanish but lost all meaning in English and bro that’s painful
The gag in itself was based on this saying we have in Spanish, its literal translation being “put the batteries on” but in a more localized sense it would be the equivalent of “get it together” and yeh the thing went with Rei giving Tobi a box filled with batteries which ofc makes sense in Spanish bc of the way the saying goes while in English it just feels weird and awkward…ofc as you know I write all my fics in Spanish first and then translate them to English I usually try to find a way to make it work but I couldn’t in this case so I had to drop the whole idea 😭😭😭
Reminds me of that one mistletoe fic I wrote years ago where I managed to make it work however the ending had a different context in each version…if you read that you know that by the end Tobi punches Rei bc he mispronounces the word mistletoe (dumbass)… in Spanish the word for mistletoe “muérdago” sounds very similar to the word “muérgano” which can be used to describe a person that is useless, rude or has bad manners/is not well behaved while in English I used the word “mistlefoe” that I’m sure it’s not a real word but I saw it in a meme and for all intent and purposes worked for the story LMAO so yeh the differences in the ending are that in Spanish he hits Rei bc he thinks you are supposed to hit unpleasant people under the mistletoe while in English he hits Rei bc he thinks you are supposed to fight people under the mistletoe…
Translating is really fun for things like these when you make it work but when you can’t it kinda sucks…..the battery gag was so good I’m sad I can’t use it

so a lot of the japanese dub is not as good as the original but i WILL say that. because of the way japanese grammar works, the rework of vax's "you don't need me. i need..." works better in the japanese imo. they changed it to "omae wa ore ga iranakutemo. ore wa...omae ga..." which is like 99% the same (basically translates to "you don't need me. i...you..." because in japanese the verb comes last), BUT again bc of the shift in grammatical structure, it places the emphasis on the "i" and "you" rather than on the "i need" and for some reason that's hitting SO hard????
