The Little Witch Academia OVA is my favorite thing to come out of Trigger. FLCL, obviously. I liked Gunsmith Cats a lot. Birdy the Mighty has stellar character animation and a fun body-swapping premise that avoids being creepy. If you like stories that take place in the Pacific Islands, I'd recommend this really obscure OVA, From a Distant Ocean Came Coo, about a young boy finding a baby plesiosaur. Sonic the Hedgehog OVA is a classic. I need to watch the Patlabor films. While technically not an OVA, the anthology film project Memories is absolutely stellar; Magnetic Rose is one of the best sci-fi horror flicks out there.
it’s interesting how people will use the ova to justify portraying ryo as a ‘jealous crazy guy’ (that and one summers day, which i can’t argue with, i just don’t really consider it canon), when … in the first ova, miki is the one who is very clearly jealous of ryo? this is mostly a dub characterization— miki is really protective over her title as Akiras Best Friend. see: her being like ‘well that’s not true cause i’m your bestest friend’, and then her being all huffy and saying “well then you’d better go if he’s so important to you” when akira insists on going with ryo. idk . just interesting. miki is also portrayed as weirdly jealous in the manga too, so i’m not really sure why this characterization is applied to ryo all the time
Meanwhile with Digimon Adventures' Taishiro {Koushiro x Taichi}, just pre 02
Yamato: Seriously... learn how to tie a tie, you football obsessed person!!
TAICHI: its Not MY Fault. I Never wear suits with ties. {LAUGH}
YAMATO: ITS KNOWLEDGE EVERY MAN SHOULD HAVE-!!
Koushiro, attempting {+Failing} to tie new uniform tie, Off to side: ('I couldn't do it either...')
Taichi: {is Oblivious (to Yamatos plight)}
YAMATO, Oblivious to Koushiros plight: {SIGHING}
I am eagerly waiting for my society to figure out that our sex is more complicated and nuanced than "male and female" and I think a nice baby step would be admitting that our concept of sex is...
...inadequate?
...incompatible with a comprehensive understanding of life?
...silly?
I don't think humans will ever have the perfect terms for perfect comprehension but...it's kinda human nature to try to find the words. Are you telling me that this type of terminology (link to the Wikipedia article) is the best we can do? Even when discussing creatures that clearly are not compatible with a binary view of sex?
Like, if we can't even admit that complex sexes exist somewhere on the planet, how could we fathom that they exist within us?
Characterization discourse is so funny for me to watch because it’s people getting upset that a character they really like has their personality changed over time, whether this be because their a new iteration of the character in a new canon or their still in one canon but changed how they act because of different writers, usually to appeal to a newer fans which causes long time fans to be upset more often. It genuinely does suck to see a character you’ve liked possibly as early as your childhood be butchered by the writers just to try to appeal to a newer audience that they feel like a shell of them old selves, especially when this is a character you consider to be one of your favorites OR all time favorite…
But then I’m standing outside of this fire like “good fucking thing the only character I liked that has been reintroduced multiple times is from something that’s not really ongoing but also never fucked up his character to begin with!” Even if the trade of being a ryoma fan is some people just flanderize him.
