Matilde Serao, grande cultrice della scultura, ci restituisce una descrizione assai vivida del Cristo: «Sopra un largo piedistallo è disteso un materasso marmoreo; sopra questo letto gelato e funebre giace il Cristo morto. È grande quanto un uomo, un uomo vigoroso e forte, nella pienezza dell’età. Giace lungo disteso, abbandonato, spento: i piedi dritti, rigidi, uniti, le ginocchia sollevate lievemente, le reni sprofondate, il petto gonfio, il collo stecchito, la testa sollevata sui cuscini, ma piegata sul lato dritto, le mani prosciolte. I capelli sono arruffati, quasi madidi del sudore dell’agonia. Gli occhi socchiusi, alle cui palpebre tremolano ancora le ultime e più dolorose lagrime. In fondo, sul materasso sono gettati, con una spezzatura artistica, gli attributi della Passione, la corona di spine, i chiodi, la spugna imbevuta di fiele, il martello...e più nulla. Cioè no: sul Cristo morto, su quel corpo bello ma straziato, una religiosa e delicata pietà, ha gettato un lenzuolo dalle pieghe morbide e trasparenti, che vela senza nascondere, che non cela la piaga ma la mostra, che non copre lo spasimo ma lo addolcisce»
