Hi, if it's not too spoilery and if you're comfortable, could we get a small sneak peek on what the poly dynamics are going to look like? And also, why does Nikke seem to dislike the kind and genuine commander so much more than the other personality types?

Hmm... I'm not gonna write mini scenes but I can summarize the vibes--

Nikke + Vethna: MC + Vethna being cute and in love, constantly getting into oddly sexually tense arguments with Nikke, and then both looking at each other like "Hey... what if we... ya know <3" and Nikke just being along for the ride before emotions smack him in the face. / OR / MC + Vethna still being cute and in love, MC + Nikke being friends, Vethna + Nikke having weird sexual tension, MC being like "you guys should kiss" and holding both their hands. CW: That being said, there absolutely is a super angsty element once it comes to the idea of Nikke joining the relationship as an equal, particularly w/ Vethna re. their cultural upbringing. So prepare for some emotional bumps there that aren't really in the other polys.

Nikke + Sabir: Nikke flirts with MC because BANTER and he thinks it's funny to piss Sabir off. Sabir being hopelessly into MC and fuming over Nikke. MC being like "you guys should kiss" and Nikke being like "yeah we should" and Sabir going "ahaha WHAT???" (Very much giving "I want two boyfriends and I want my boyfriends to be boyfriends")

Sabir + Vethna: MC owning two little purse dogs who refuse to get along and are petty with each other. It's pretty much Vethna + Sabir both being hopelessly into MC and MC being like "I have TWO hands and also you two are literally the same person why don't you go get manicures together and shop or something???"

So they're all closed triads!

Regarding Nikke: He doesn't like MC, so when MC is generally more diplomatic to him, it feels condescending to him. It's pretty much just the fact MC is more of the bigger person when they're genuine, which pisses Nikke of because he wants to fight w/ MC, not be friendly, or even tolerable. So he likes Aggressive + Sarcastic MCs more off the bat, but he'll change and open up more as their relationship changes!

“Agent Banes are you with me?” Bucky’s head snaps up as he glares at Fury. How in the hell did he and Sam get talked into going undercover to find a weapons smuggler? Fury eyes Barnes and Wilson with his one good eye. “Did you hear what I just told you?” He snaps. “Get y/n and find out where they are smuggling the weapons from.” Sam stands up and gives Bucky a glare.

“Not a problem, Sir. You can count on us.” Sam states with authority. 

“Good.  Dismissed.”

Bucky watches as Fury leaves the conference room and then turns towards Sam placing his hands firmly onto the table.  It groans with the weight of his arms as he pushes up out of his seat. “Why did you volunteer us for that mission?”

“Look, you and I both know these weapons are dangerous and in the wrong hands can cause a lot of damage.” Sam tries to reason with the super-soldier. 

Bucky internally groans. He knows Sam is right, however, he is not giving in that easy. “Just like Steve, taking stupid risks you don’t have to,” he grumbles as he pushes around Sam and then out the door heading down the hallway to find y/n. 

“I am not like Steve. Besides he passed the shield to me, knowing that I would always try to do the right thing.” Sam shakes his head, not backing down from the mission, and knows that Bucky will realize that he’s right. 

Bucky storms off towards their room and throws open the door with a muffled bam. You look up from your place on the sofa and place your book face down on the coffee table. Your light yellow sundress cascades over your legs onto the sofa as you stare up at Bucky. His mouth set in a firm hard line. “Ok...so I take it the mission brief did not go well.”

Sam trailed behind Bucky back to their shared room. Bucky was upset about something and it wasn’t about the mission.  Sam knew it was his birthday and the last thing the old guy wanted to do was go out on a mission trying to find some weapons dealer.  

“Would one of you all tell me what is going on?” You glance between your two lovers with a questioning expression. Bucky leans against the kitchen island and folds his massive arms over his chest.  

“Bucky’s pissed off at me for volunteering us for a mission.” He eyes Bucky “And tomorrow is his birthday and will miss all the festivities of him turning 35 again.” A teasing smirk forms on Sam’s lips. 

“Try adding some numbers to that,” Bucky grumbles.

“Aw, and you don’t look a day over 29.” Y/N chuckles. Bucky lets out an aggravated breath blowing his chestnut hair out of his face. 

You couldn’t help but laugh at your two soulmates. Since you first met them they have been at each other’s throat one minute and in each other’s arms the next. Many times you sandwiched in between.  You have to admit the latter was much more appealing, but it’s never a dull moment with the dynamic duo. 

“Let me guess, you got to cut your hair again to fit the part of a…” you eye him and try to guess the mission at hand. “Ugh...cowboy?” Sam bursts into laughter. You give Sam a warning glare and walk towards Bucky wrapping your arms around his waist as you look up into his sapphire eyes“No? Ok, handsome, what is the gig?”

“He’s going to pose as an owner if a….SEX...SHOP!” Sam can’t hold back the laughter any longer.  Maybe he could make it up to Bucky by buying some sex toys while they are staking out the shop waiting for the dealer to show up. 

You bite your lip as you try to hold back your laughter. “Babe, I think that’s a great job.”

Storyteller Saturday~! Okay I'm not sure if you've answered this before, but I LOVE how all your ocs in The Business have food names? Whatever caused you to come up with that, and can you share why you chose certain names for them?

I mentioned it briefly in talking with @inked-foundry and!!!! i’m putting it under a cut because it’s a fairly long answer!

Tequila just seemed like a fitting one for him! as I built up his character and his part of the story, and came to realize that he was going to be in a poly relationship, I decided that I wanted his partner’s to be named after the things that made up a tequila shot! 

at this point, i’m still just being witty, you know? playing around with the idea of characters named Salt and Lime. I build up the characters and then I name them, right? so I built up these two characters and decided that Lime deserved that name because he’s the stronger player in the relationship; he’s got a bite to his personality, a very sharp tongue, a lot of bitterness in him.

Salt, on the other hand, is very complimentary as far as personality goes. very laid back and easy going. and I figure since salt is added to a dish after it’s made, and Salt joins up with Tequila and Lime after they’ve been together a while, it just seemed to make sense! 

aaaaannnnd that’s when I realized that if they all had food names...why not take it all the way?

SOME OTHER KIDS

Raspberry and Fig are meant to be loosely related theme wise. both fruits, both “foxes”, both foster kids pulled into the mob. Raspberry is tart and sour until you get to know him, or add the right personality to the mix. meanwhile, Fig is a very versatile character personality wise. he’s naturally a sweet guy, but he pulls off the “savory” act very well for work. just like figs can be used in sweet or savory dishes!

Bourbon and Whiskey are brothers, so I decided, hey, their names should match! Bourbon is the older brother, and he has a very sharp, focused, and refined way about him. and, you know, the name Scotch made me think of tape, so I went with my next “prestigious” drink. Bourbone! meanwhile, Whiskey is easy to get along with, a little awkward, can dress up if really pressed but still the kind of guy to not own any matching socks. 

Honey has no name at the start of the story. a rabbit pulled out of Rye’s labs, it’s actually Fig that comes up with his name. Honey is chosen because the rabbit is very soft spoken and sweet, with golden eyes, and also because Fig thinks it’s a cute play on the dish “figs and honey”.

Rye is just an all around awful person. I wanted to name him after a bread, because he’s a bird, and then I thought, hey, why not just pick my absolute least favorite type of bread, since I hate this character so much? and I just. really hate bread. this name has the least amount of meaning and symbolism, oops.

Pumpkin was the most recently named character! I've been toying with options for him for a while. I went with this name because he’s very quiet, and pumpkin is one of those flavors that’s easily lost if not treated very carefully. and his character has the chance at being very vibrant, but its going to need a lot of special care before he gets to that point!

Dijon/Vinegar is giving me trouble! I need it to be a sharp, acidic flavor, because that’s how his character is! I went with Dijon originally because he’s got a heavy accent. somehow my brain connected “Dijon mustard” with “bayou drawl”. but recently the character Sugar came into being, and I like the Vinegar/Sugar dynamic so? still up in the air, here!

Sugar was simple. I needed a name that embodied a character so sweet, you wouldn’t expect him to be able hurt you. 

Cayenne is an extremely energetic dog, with a wildly vibrant and loud personality, so I wanted something spicy for his name! he was the fourth character that I named!

so basically! every character has a lot of meaning in their name! I try to pick a food item that I feel represents their personality as well as the theme that they have going on with them!

I really wanted a Scentsy Buddy (a plush with a zipper for scent packs)... but they have a plush supporting Autism speaks. :( My favorite sensory thing is plush things and smells... any ideas?

As far as I’m aware, only sales of that plush contribute towards A$. However, if you don’t want to touch a company that has any connection with A$, I absolutely do not blame you - it’s all about our individual comfort level, and we have the right to feel good about the stim toys we buy.

I do have ideas, though, about DIY alternatives, and @pink-rainbow-sparkles and @thesensorybox have posted on very good alternatives available in Australia and New Zealand.

If you don’t want a weighted plush, the simplest solution is to literally drop essential oils on a plushie/soft toy you already own. Some essential oils like lemongrass are yellow-tinted and will stain; other essential oils, like lavender, tea tree or peppermint, are clear and won’t stain. (I’ve been dropping lavender on my pillow at night, to help me sleep, for four or five years. You wouldn’t know it to look at my pillow or pillow case.) If you want to change the scent, wash the toy and add a new oil. (My pillow case does not smell of lavender after machine washing, and I use fragrance-free laundry powder.)

If you want more info on which essential oils don’t stain, I’ll gladly go through my oil collection and swatch test them for you, but I’ve been dropping lavender oils on my weighted soft toys to refresh their scent and there is absolutely no staining. None. Do use pure essential oils and not oils blended with a carrier oil, though, or else you might make your toy tacky or greasy to touch.

(Note: I have no idea about the stainability of perfume/fragrance oils when dripped on fabric, because I don’t use them. Can anyone advise on this?)

The other options involve using weighted heat bags inside a plush animal case, very similar to the Scentsy toys. These toys are a cover designed to contain a rice or wheat bag that you remove, microwave and then replace, so they’re ideal for the switchable scent pack function.

@thesensorybox wrote this post on how to find them in K-Mart stores; @pink-rainbow-sparkles wrote this post on how they use their unicorn, also from K-Mart. There’s several different ones listed on K-Mart’s website, $9 AUD. Big W, another Australian department store, also has several different kinds, also $9 AUD. The bunny looks really cute!

I checked out Amazon, but I was having trouble finding toys with the removable pouch, since that is part of the function we want here. I’d recommend checking out your local department store. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, it may be harder to find these as you’re moving out of cold weather. My local department stores, albeit with less stock, did have them throughout the summer just gone, so I’d consider it worth a look.

If you want the switchable scent pack function, for different scents, you’ll likely need to make or buy packs of a similar size to swatch them out, and either scent those packs with essential oils or fill them with a scented filler (dried herbs, lavender heads) in addition to stuffing or something weighted (rice, seeds, grains, soup mix, dried beans, poly pellets). You can scent rice very easily by tossing it in a container (an old ice-cream tub works well) and adding a few drops of oil, and I’ve scented plastic poly pellets the same way with no problems. I’ve also mixed poly/soft toy stuffing with dried lavender heads with no problems, just by layering: one layer of stuffing, one layer of lavender, etc.

The wheat packs, if you make several, are no different from a bean bag (two tutorials linked on this post). Cut two pieces of fabric the size of the bag inside the toy (usually a rectangle or a square), sew or glue up three edges, fill with scented rice or wheat or weighted pellets (if you’re not going to heat it, it doesn’t matter what you use) and sew or glue closed the fourth edge, making a sealed-shut pocket. Since it goes inside the toy, it doesn’t even have to be neat - just keep your stitches small enough that the inside filler can’t come out. The seams can be as messy as you like!

You can also refresh this pouch with a few drops of essential oil, and because it goes inside the toy, you can even use those oils that stain, as you won’t see the inner pouch.

If you don’t mind rustling plastic, you could even use several ziplock bags to contain the scented filler. I’d recommend using the thinner, cheaper kind, as the smell of the oil will seep through the plastic more easily. (I never find one ziplock bag to contain scent all that well, but the cheaper ones are much worse at it, which is what we want!)

Either way, it’s a little involved if you want to have the multiple scent options. Just dripping a toy with essential oils is the easiest, but it will still involve the purchase of several oils. (This said, oils last a long time and you can use them for scented necklaces, slimes, burning in oil burners, bean bags, personal care, cleaning…) The heat-up pocket plush toy will require sewing or gluing, and the purchase of fabric (or ziplock bags), bag fillers and oils. I can’t find a way that’s less complicated, because I don’t think perfumes and body sprays will last as long as essential oils, in terms of the filler or plush toy holding the scent.

If anyone has any suggestions, or a supplier for something similar that isn’t Scentsy, by all means, suggest away!

a good scent thing that isn’t oils are tea bags! they never stain and last a super long time I have a little pocket I’ve sewn on teddy bear that sits in my bed with a tea bag in it and it works great! if you can’t sew or just don’t like it you can get Velcro or just glue

Also, if you don’t have the spoons or motor function to sew or glue your own bean/rice bags, you can use those little zipper wallets. Just make sure the zipper is entirely plastic (no metal) if you’re going to microwave it. If you can’t find one like that, you can always use a sock and fill it up, tie it off, microwave it, and put it in the plushie.
