My cousin & her husband dropped by today with a lovely new addition to my studio - a desk/shelf that was made by our grandfather (who I sadly never got to meet, but I like having things he made in my house!).

It truly feels like the puzzle piece that was missing from this space - the shelves are nice & deep & will fit tons of drying/in-progress pottery, and the sturdy desk bit will be so good for rolling out slabs for my mugs.

Also, the drawers fit SO MUCH? I hucked a bunch of tools/pottery supplies in there & there's still a ton of room in both of them (neither is pulled out all the way in these photos)!

Finally, in one of those serendipitous circumstances, the veneer of the new desk matches the veneer of my 1930s cabinet I got last year *perfectly*?!?! Wild!!

SO !! The demon Cricut machine has decided to break after only 1.2 yrs of use which is not Surprising since its given me huge problems since day 1. The sensor scanner has become dislodged & I don't have enough technical expertise to take apart the machine, rewire the piece and put it back together like those dudes in that Reddit thread I found while troubleshooting.

GOOD NEWS is that past Climb was smart and got the warranty & my warranty company is covering the cost of a new machine so I can get back to printing asap. I should be able to get a new machine by end of today / tomorrow & work on getting caught up with orders. I'm working through a ton of post-holiday emails as well but I should get everyone caught up by today

Studio Star (Windows) & Aurora (Mac) updates

Sims 4 Studio (Star) updates include an improved interface for selecting swatch thumbnail colors, the addition of Styles to the object Catalog tab (see below), and a clearer statement regarding Tooltip tags. Additionally, Studio is now compatible with any Blender version in the 3.3 series, and a more helpful message is provided in cases where the installed Blender version is not compatible with Studio.

Sims 4 Studio (Aurora) updates include a bug fix for the .png import process so .pngs will show up with the correct color, the addition of Styles to the object Catalog tab (see below), and a clearer statement regarding Tooltip tags.  Additionally, Studio is now compatible with any Blender version in the 3.3 series, and a more helpful message is provided in cases where the installed Blender version is not compatible with Studio.

we watched this …argument presentation/talk by Judith Butler, given at Harvard about The Shadows of The Absent Body - a symposium by Doris Salcedo. Basically, it was a very tiered ordeal in classic classist Harvard fashion, and the talk was exhausting in classic Butler prose.

Basically I got 12 minutes in and stopped because it was fucking comical. I’m tired of academia talking academically. I’m tired of academic being synonymous with pompous. There’s no debate that Judith is very intelligent and has a valuable perspective, but at this point in our collective human history, I’m incredibly bored of wealthy white faces behind pedestals. I don’t want to write a reflection about why this white supremacy plague, is just that, a plague. It’s obvious. It’s crippling. It smells bad. And it’s fucking boring.

So I’m reading this book: MR by Kamau Brathwaite - all about de-education, or more accurately, the decolonization of education. Everything from the cadence, to the layout, to the grammar goes against every “foundation” the Empire instills & it is far from boring.

I need time to sit with things

School has put such a time bomb on everything. On my work, my work ethic, processing material, utilizing resources, etc. I never feel like I have enough time. I don't want to be lazy, but I do want it just sit with things and process them. Balance is needed but not needed at the same time. I want my natural energy towards art to take over because that's when I make my best pieces. However, it's hard to do that when you have a million and 1 things going on in your brain. I will say I am glad that I at least have ideas and Im continuing with the ideas that I had in the beginning of the semester. I told myself I wanted to work on collage, painting and mixed media more. Ive gotten in the habit of just throwing things on paper instead of just thinking about it. So I am happy about that because I've just been letting my art speak to me. I don't know yet what it says but I've discovered that I love patterns and repetition. I love bold colors, odd shapes and weird features. I love distortion but also elements of surrealism. I love simplicity as well as intricacy. I think it's safe to say I'm all over the place. Maybe that's why I've struggled with finding a style. Now that I am analyzing things, maybe I don't want a style? Maybe I want to be all over the place.

Week 7 Response and Studio Update

Took another mini NYC Trip and happened to see that Doreen Gardner had a show at the New Museum. So I got to see the real deal. It’s disturbing, heavy, and really incredible. She hits right where she aims which is an impressive feat. The show is called REVOLTED and I’ll add the statement here:

“REVOLTED” is a visceral confrontation with the gruesome physical and spiritual consequences of the transatlantic slave trade and the multitude of inhumane tortures carried out in its name and in its aftermath. Garner’s intricate and mesmerizing sculptural objects—often comprised of silicone, insulation foam, glass, beads, crystals, pearls, synthetic hair, and other materials—uncannily evoke corporeal flesh, organs, and wounds. Proffering animal entrails and flesh bearing the marks of smallpox, scarlet fever, syphilis, and the bubonic plague, Garner presents a grotesque counternarrative to the myth of white racial purity that has been leveraged to uphold white supremacy.

Inspired by a 1773 uprising onboard the slave ship New Britannia, “REVOLTED” is also a meditation on rebellion, considering various modes of resistance from the era of the slave trade to today. The exhibition’s immersive, blood-red interior is a sensorial evocation of “seeing red,” the overwhelming urge to revolt against harmful systems, and the fortitude required to do so. This new project interrogates the abuse of power, the politics of redress and retribution, and ancestral revenge, imagining ways to act out a ritualistic catharsis of the persistent forms of violence Garner’s work exposes.

As far as studio goes this week, I'll be using live flowers in these trash vessels I made so the photo will come next week. Timing is tricky with a live medium. I'm buying the flowers today in order to have the piece ready for Critique tomorrow. A lil info on the piece:

Say It With Flowers Say It With Flowers is the slogan for a floral service. The phrase kept rotating through my mind as I was creating these trash vessels. I’m realizing that even though I’ve left the floral industry, I still have a drive to arrange. So, I’m bringing that into my art practice. Flower arranging is a domestic art form usually reserved for special occasions or for the wealthy. I’m questioning excess and accessibility by arranging flowers in to-go cups, bottles, and just trash in general. I’m also recalling my time in the flower shop where we would accumulate “trash flowers” which are just flowers that aren’t quite good enough for selling. We, the florists, could take the trash flowers home at the end of the day.

Good news! The saga of the Gnomish Cabinet-of-Unknown-Age has a happy ending!

My brother-in-law was able to help us do the necessary geometry/hoiking to get it up our difficult stairs & it's now sitting happily in my studio, looking PRETTY DANG GOOD, I THINK (also the billy bookshelf it replaced fits beautifully in the otherwise useless little nook by the closet - I really can't believe how well it all worked out!).

It also feels like it was designed exactly for ceramics-stuff storage?? My underglaze collection sits perfectly in the drawer and boxes of clay fit to the millimetre, right on the door-line!!

Please also enjoy some closeups of the various carvings - I love how even the functional handles are fancy little guys!!
