Lazy Sundays with Finn…

Multiverse of Madness

I am an unapologetic Adventure Time apologist. i think it was one of the greatest shows ever created and deserves all the love it gets. AT saved Cartoon Network back in the day and spawned so many creators who would, in turn, leave their mark on the industry. Without AT, there is no Steven Universe or that other one with the fighting i guess? The influence of Adventure Time gave credence to the potential popularity of shows like nuShe-Ra and nuVoltron. Those characters are iconic and full of so much depth. Finn Mertens, Jake the Dog, Bonnibel Bubblegum; All of them have become stalwarts of cartoon history. Like, Marceline Abadeer is one of my all-time favorite characters in fiction. When Distant Lands aired, i was emotionally devastated. Obviously, Obsidian was mys sh*t but Together Again brought me to tears. That's how much this show meant to me, so when Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake was announced, i was all over it. I was mad curious how this would play out. Would it be just a romp through a gender-swapped Ooo? Would the target audience still be kids or would the show be a more mature take since the original kids were now wayward adults? So many questions. Well, Fionna and Cake is over and i have thoughts.

First thing first, This show is not about Fionna and Cake. It is on a superficial level but they're more a plot device who participates in the narrative. Fionna and Cake is about Simon Petrikov coming to terms with the loss of Betty Groff and how his relationship with her, was toxic as f*ck. Like, holy sh*t, was it bad! The co-dependency was insane! I mean, you got glimpses of that throughout Betty's arc in the original AT (Betty literally leaping through a Hambo powered time rift, her problematic Magic Woman phase, and the eventual wish that turned her into f*cking GolBetty, all for her "love" of Simon) but this chick was as obsessed with Simon as Simon was with her. When she transcended and become a deity of pure chaos, Simon was left in a depression spiral that, ultimately, shook the core of the goddamn multiverse. And i say that with no hyperbole. F*cking Ice King, put the entire multiverse of Adventure Time in jeopardy, because he missed his boo. What follows is, one of the most well thought out and executed romps through a multiverse narrative I've seen outside of f*cking comic books. I don't want to spoil anything but the first nine episodes of this show are brilliant, rivaling the very best Adventure Time has to offer. The tenth? Not so much.

Fionna and Cake definitely botches the landing, especially coming off such incredibly strong episodes as the three right before it. Again, no details, but, holy sh*t, were those three episodes great. Seriously, watch this show, it's f*cking fantastic. The Simon stuff is definitely the heart of this narrative but what about the show's namesake? The Fionna and Cake bits are good but i never really felt as invested in their story as i was in Simon's trials. It's not like their stuff was bad, per sey, it just didn't feel as... dire? I don't know, i felt more for the characters around them than i did the characters themselves? Don't misunderstand me, i enjoyed their arc. Fionna and Cake struggling with their own identities and coming to terms with who they are was cool and all but, ultimately, it felt more sub than main plot, which is weird because it's their show. Fionna and Cake are basically the inciting action which informs the entire plot but i never really feel like that's a thing. Plus, there is this very important aspect to their character which, kind of never really plays into the overarching conflict, with the exception of a particularly gruesome scene, and i feel like that was a missed opportunity. As an overall production and viewing experience, Fionna and Cake is f*cking exquisite.

The stuff i said about Fionna and Cake is true, to an extent. True for me, i guess. People may get more out of their arc than i did, which is fine, that's a point subjectivity. What isn't subjective is how well this show is produced. Seriously, the art style is familiar, yet, more detailed. The characters are well performed, each true to their own personality beats. But it was the worlds we visited that truly hammered home the butterfly effect, the effect Simon had, on all of those worlds. I loved every second of that experience and, while they didn't fully stick the landing, there were great aspects of that tenth episode. Fionna and Cake turned out to be ten episodes of solid, adult, Adventure Time narrative that felt organic. It didn't feel like a cashgrab or desperate attempt at Max to pull in viewers. It felt like, after the absolutely brilliant reception to Distant Lands, that HBO understood there was a market for a show like that and they just let the staff create. Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake isn't perfect, it's definitely got it's flaws, but of the content I've seen this year, it's easily some of the best. Whether you're a fan of the old world of Ooo, or just interested in what "adult" animation has to offer, this show is one of the best examples of the art form. It was a strong watch and i definitely recommend a viewing.

I'm curious about your thoughts about the Glee subreddit and morality. When I was active on that sub, I left some time back because of the insane Rachel glazing and Santana slander, I noticed a lot of the arguments or discussions were coming from a moral standpoint for me. Santana's my favorite character and often how she was criticized on there seemed to come from sort of moral high ground. She's a terrible character because she did this wrong (biphobia, racism, homophobia, bullying etc) and that isn't okay without people remembering the time period that Glee aired in or that Glee thrived off of dodgy/satirical jokes or humor. They hold Santana and her actions accountable as if she was created in 2024 and not 2009.

Was this something you also noticed when you were there? This weird morality stance when it comes to controversial characters like Santana? It honestly felt like she was being judged to 2024 standards. Sorry if this sounds a bit disjointed but I'm interested to know your viewpoint.

No, this is a really good question.

It's common knowledge for people who have left the Glee sub that it's on some self-righteous moral high ground. And I wouldn't care about their morality stance... if they were as harsh on Finn and Rachel as they are on Santana, Quinn, Mercedes, etc.

I can give you a lot of examples of their double standards.

When anyone tries to bring up Rachel slapping Santana, they'll cry about the times Santana slapped Quinn and Finn... But nothing about Finn trying to yank Quinn out of her wheelchair, beating down on Puck, attacking Jesse, etc. Hell, they'll fucking praise him for assaulting Brody. In all of these situations, Finn always gets an excuse: oh Puck betrayed him, oh Quinn manipulated him, oh Jesse and Brody HURT poor Rachel!! But then they'll make excuses for demonizing Santana... despite the fact that Quinn revealed her private medical info to get her demoted and Finn literally outed and doxed her to the entire state.

Ergo, they're fine when Finn resorts to violence because it's SO UNDERSTANDABLE, but Santana's a bitch who deserves what she gets so she isn't allowed to be upset in any way.

Do you know how many times someone brings up Mercedes quitting? Do you know how many times they condemn her for being childish, disrespectful, and leaving the way she did? But... Rachel did the same thing for years. Why is it only condemnable when Mercedes does it? Why is Rachel allowed to complain and get angry, but the minute Mercedes does it she has an attitude problem?

Rachel playing Maria in WSS was fine, but for some reason she has the right to condemn Santana for auditioning for Fanny? And the Glee sub thinks that's perfectly okay.

It's funny you mention satire, because apparently that only applies to Rachel, not Santana. Rachel can make whatever comments she wants about Black people and Chinese people and anyone who isn't American and it's so cute and funny and endearing, but when Santana did it, it was racist and she's terrible.

(Honestly, I know Santana is Mexican in canon, but Naya was Black irl, so it really feels like this is misogynoir (especially when Mercedes is only liked as long as she's being perfectly unproblematic). If Santana was a white Hispanic and not an Afro-Latina, I feel like people in the Glee sub (and everywhere else tbh) wouldn't be nearly as harsh on her)

Also, you pointing out people judging her by 2024 terms is hilarious, because that's the exact thing the Glee sub accuses Finn haters like myself of doing to him. Except... condemning most of the shit Finn does was perfectly the norm in 2009. The Office (THE FUCKING OFFICE) took the time to explain why outing was bad. A ton of sitcoms pointed out that abusing your size to beat people up when you get mad is wrong.

IT WAS 2009, NOT 1989. The last episode of Glee aired in 2013, when progressive shows like Steven Universe were coming out (hell, Adventure Time is even older than Glee and it did things so much better; Finn Mertens>Finn Hudson) Glee isn't the aged relic people make it out to be. And firmly holding Finn to "2009" standards- while not doing the same for Santana (or Quinn or anyone else)- and them attacking anyone who dares to say "Hey, Finn's kind of a dick," is a double standard that screams misogyny and racism

Back aboard Finn's Marauder, Princess Bubblegum thanked Finn Mertens with all her heart for saving her life and with her the Candy Kingdom and named him her Champion, marking the first step to peaceful coexistence between human and mutant. One of the more experienced Frogmen, as thanks to Finn for saving her life from her Black Widow-style out-of-air SCUBA peril, Bubblegum has volunteered herself to become a Helper Corps Rescue Frogwoman and Finn's dive buddy, flying right in the face of the expected anti-mutie outrage from the other Helper Corps Frogmen and generally every Island human. Her series of successful rescue missions soon proved the naysayers wrong. >> Rescue // Princess Bubblegum, normally the more experienced SCUBA diver of the two, was living proof even veteran frogmen and frogwomen make rookie mistakes and ended up becoming Rescue Frogman Finn "PG87" Mertens' first rescuee. Bubblegum, kitted in her personal OxyCola SCUBA gear, one bright Summer day in the drowned Pre-Mushroom War city ruins under the waters between Ooo and the Islands of Man, was on what began and should have been a routine solo Pre-War history research SCUBA dive training herself as a SCUBA diver, learning about the life and times of the sunken city and just having fun and enjoying the underwater urban sights, choosing to rest a little on the bottom and take in the sights of this sunken ol' town... when the unthinkable reared its ugly head. Princess Bubblegum, running rapidly out of air, found herself taking a crash course in SCUBA safety (one of the lessons being "ALWAYS keep your eyes on your air!" - a mistake which could've been fatal) when she felt her breathing through the mouthpiece of her snorkelator tightening - the first sign her OxyCola bottletank was slowly going empty. She should've known her routine history lesson dive would turn into a hazardous adventure when the snorkelator tightened more and breathing became very difficult. These were her last breaths. And calm and collected as she was in this situation, a drowned mausoleum of a Pre-War city at the bottom of the ocean is no place to get lost and run out of air in. Just when all hope seemed lost for the pink SCUBA-clad candy mutant princess, when Bubblegum prayed for more breaths from her empty bottletank, along swam a guardian angel in light blue, blue and green SCUBA gear to Princess Bubblegum's rescue, sharing her the life-saving air her lungs ached for on the way up to his rescue submarine, rescue jackets inflated. A Founders Island Helper Corps Rescue Frogman named Finn "PG87" Mertens. It was the first Kiss of Loyalty and Love between Finn and Bubblegum as the boy Frogman kissed the air into the Princess' lips. On the White Shark corner, Martin is everything you can hope for in a Rebellious Recon Resistance One Man Renegade Commando Team: a handsome young devil of a high school boy loaded who plays the game of life his way with nasty tricks worthy of a con artist to get himself out of tough situations, a two fisted bare knuckle brawler who is as good with his Ultimate Gas Hands and Daikatana Replica (A picture perfect copy of the Mighty Daikatana down to the mirror polish of the blade and the energy slashes minus the Time Travel power) as he is with his Beam Magnum, Magnum Revolver Model Evoker and Big Guy's Big Guns and Big Knuckle Sandwiches if and when it's time to bash some heads in and a real bad 'tude to go with the whole weapons locker - more than enough for Martin to sally forth to the world and back as Recon Team explorer and take on even giant mathin' robots head on and bare knuckle two fisted with. On the Black Octopus corner, Minerva is what you would call the Model Hub Island Helper High School Girl: a kind and selfless soul of a high school girl who is as well versed in the knowledge of medicine as only befitting of a future Field Nurse of Hub Island as she is in fighting the bad guys with her Impact Needle, Desert Eagle Model Evoker and ArchMediAngel Maria's Megasteel Megascalpel and Surgery Gloved Wings if and when it's time for aggressive surgery, very clever and all too willing to help to the point of going above and beyond the call of duty and what's considered "right". And train Martin and Minerva did, starting with the safety of the Hub Island High School Deep Olympic Pool with the ABCs of SCUBA Diving, Out-of-Air Emergency Simulations that involve turning off your and your fellow frogkid's air tanks off and simulating out-of-air emergencies as real as they get, but not too real and Emergency Ascents as part of Minerva's Rescue Frogman training and Martin's too and moving on to the wide underwater world of the open waters at the Hub Island Beaches, Pre-War cities gone underwater and all. Before you can say "Neptune's Trident!", Martin and Minerva became top of the class Frogman students in the Hub Island High SCUBA Club, with Marty's devilish charm and Minnie's above and beyond the call of duty willingness to help

It was the first Kiss of Loyalty and Love between Frogboy Martin Mertens and Froggirl Minerva Campbell inside the submerged high school pool that brightly sunlit, warm summer day as the White Shark Resistance Frogboy kissed sweet lifesaving air into the Black Octopus Rescue Froggirl's lips and soon ended up hug each other in a tight warm loving embrace once her surprise makes way for relief and love, their puffy cheeked lips connected to each other's and sharing their breaths of air, their personalized regulators floating below their mouths, their colorful sporty school swimsuits and wetsuit colliding and connecting with each other, soft fabric brushing and rubbing, their swim gloved arms holding the two at the waists and finned feet kicking like the young SCUBA lovers they are, the dive ending with Martin and Minerva breaking the surface as newlyborn and newly baptized teenage high school SCUBA kid lovers.
