Can I have some headcanons about Subyss as a child getting a trouble.

For a moment I thought old asks show up because I didn't notice the trouble part lol

He definitely got in trouble a lot. He's not entirely stupid, but he's not a genius either though it might be his alcohol-corroded brain. He's impulsive and naturally cruel and probably was like this since early childhood. He would get in trouble for jumping/lashing out at kids who teased him verbally to get a reaction (he was an easy target for them) (that one was inspired by personal experiences) (other hcs about him are not from experience dw).

Also I hc he was really reluctant or indifferent at best when it came to torturing people when he started to do it, so he might get in trouble for that too, kind of like Charles. Also he probably never got 'good' at the 'job', because at first he found it gross and later on he got addicted to satisfying his sadistic desires. I mean that he's not methodical like Charles when killing, he's super chaotic and has some weird complex about it. And even with how ineffective of an interrogation method torture already was... he'd personally lower the statistics.

I said I don't actually think Charles got punished all that much (he just latches onto those memories a lot since he's the type to contemplate his trauma) ...Subyss definitely did. If his father was also a torturer, I don't wanna imagine what he did to him as a punishment. It might have just been with stuff that was normal at the time, but the hypothetical dad/legal caretaker might be like Jean-baptiste and use an actual torture device and twist it that he's teaching his child how to use it... I'll leave that thought alone though, it's pretty disturbing to me.

He probably got in trouble for drinking and sleeping around since quite an early age for that stuff, like 16 or something.

Probably has some sort of masochistic fantasies, but whether that's natural to him, stems from childhood abuse, from a desire to be the victim out of curiosity or from some sort of repressed guilt, I don't know. Most likely all of the above.

Oooh he also takes out his rage on others always and takes shit personally, so if he got beaten for coming home drunk or failing at the job, you'd expect some half-dead convicts the next day since he blames the vague 'unjust world' and not himself for his actions. After no one can abuse him anymore, he still 'copes' this way.

He also has that thing where the more he gets punished, the more he does what he was punished for, as a sort of childish rebellion and bcs he thinks he's allowed to do anything he wants. That superiority complex grows with every person he personally ruins and traumatizes because of the power rush of standing above someone and hearing them beg. And he's sooo addicted to it that when Damiens refused to react to Subyss' cruelty he nearly fucking tormented him to death, man is INSANE. He doesn't see people as people anymore and couldn't form any type of relationship because of that.

I'm sorry for going so much off topic lol, I overanalyse this minor character so bad.

I'm sorry, now that I think abt it I realized my request might have sounded kind of rude. So please, feel free to ignore it (I'd even prefrer that because I'm anxious😭). But I still want to ramble about that absolute babygirl of a man. Any relationship with him would be abusive (probably mutually, he likes to provoke). I also think he finds it very erotic to hurt his lover in some way, be it emotionally or physically. Just imagine it though, being with him would not be all that bad. After all, he's really easy to manipulate.

Also, the inherent romanticism of him corrupting a young, innocent woman... my head is so full of him.

he is impulsive, lacks empathy and i honestly believe he’s a bit stupid! he enjoys your suffering and to him you’re nothing but a little toy, as if you gave a fluffy, spicy kitten to some little child who has no idea how not to hurt them because of how cute it is.

being around him would be so painful physically and mentally but he’s just so pretty and charming. your entire body would be covered in bruises no doubt and i honestly believe at some point you would either break down completely or turn abusive too as an attempt to defend yourself, depending on what type of person you are.

I think the part for me that really sells Griffith cares about Guts is that scene in the Eclipse where he tries to catch him. After all the torture done to him, trying to catch Guts (who's probably very heavy because of all the muscles) would probably be excruciatingly painful, physically speaking, with all the damage done to his skin, plus the bone damage caused by the lack of sunlight. I also bet that his shoulders have been in and out of their sockets a few times, because I'd have trouble believing one of the most commonly used torture methods where't used on him. But even with non-dislocated shoulders, with the amount of stiff scar tissue and fragilized bones...Ouch!

Honestly, there are so many things in the Golden Age and even after that definitively nail down that Griffith not only genuinely cared about Guts but did so to the point where it ended up damaging him (not inevitably, but because of how things played out) that I find the continued discourse around it genuinely baffling. So, yeah, I completely agree with you and at the same time I'm deeply confused about how anyone (not you, rofl) could still be unsure about Griffith's feelings by that point.

This is kind of a tangent, but when it comes to interpreting stories or character relationships, I think there are... different levels of interpretability.

There are things that one can fairly interpret in different ways because various different takes would make sense.

There are things where I'm kind of like, "well in order to get that you'd have to ignore the context of the scene, the nuances in the use of the specific japanese words/kanji used, and probably several interview responses, but if you really want to see it that way, you're not technically in direct contradiction with canon."

And then there are things where... genuinely, a take is just objectively wrong. "Griffith never cared about Guts" is absolutely one of these. Just on the face of it, if he didn't care about Guts he wouldn't be Femto - that's legitimately all you really need to understand that he cared about Guts (and the Hawks as a whole) immensely; at that point anyone who is saying otherwise is just factually incorrect as they're in arguing with black-and-white on the page canon.

The fact that so many people are so dedicated to misreading what they claim to be a favorite series is just so fucking weird to me. And speaking as a veteran of approximately 9,000 arguments and flame wars over Griffith, I have never seen a single person give a coherent explanation for how their perspective on this character even works, it's always just circular logic, projection of their own (unevenly applied) moralization, and vibes. IDK.

Hopefully you’re responding partially to the anon ask, and I didn’t accidentally imply that Gennon is obsessed with Griffith because Griffith was good in bed anywhere. Like, if you got that from any of my posts then clearly I need to work on clarity lol. I definitely think Gennon is a liar who overtly romanticizes rape and we’re not meant to take his statements at face value. I don’t really think he’s deluded, since he was overt about intending to kidnap Griffith and didn’t, eg, assume that Griffith would come back willingly, but I do think he was blatantly lying in his final confrontation with Griffith to make himself look better.

My point isn’t that Gennon has a good reason for being obsessed with Griffith, or that Griffith led him on or dazzled him in bed. My point is just that it’s a useful parallel to others who pedestalize and obsess over Griffith, and it’s a recurring aspect of Griffith’s character and relationships for a clear thematic purpose.

I’m the type of person who focuses on themes when it comes to meta, so that’s usually where my answers to questions come from. I’m less interested in “what would likely drive these characters psychologically if they were real?” and more interested in “what is the narrative purpose of these characters’ choices and the way the story frames them?”

But yeah Gennon’s predatory obsession with Griffith can’t be blamed on Griffith in any way, even if he did dazzle him with sheer charisma. It’s just a recurring feature of Griffith’s life that reflects on his narrative in interesting ways.

The Drows I am worldbuilding have an extremely unique social structure thanks to living underground and dispersal across wide areas is quite costly for them. Only the oldest male and female siblings are fertile, the rest would have to wait for the death of the eldest one by one to become fertile. Drow society is patriarcal, and paternal aunts and uncles play an active role in providing ressources for the household and the education of their nieces and nephews, and thus enjoy a large degree of inclusive fitness. They also adopted a culture in which non-reproductive incest is considered a form of sexual education and they have no nudity taboo. How would their introduction to a society (thanks to natural disaster) that is mainly XVIth century "European" christians work?

What do the Innocent executioners dream of? As in at night

I think almost all of them are prone to traumatic flashbacks when they try to sleep. Like during the day, their minds would be occupied.

I think Jean-Baptiste barely sleeps at all because of the nightmares he has of killing people. I think when he was younger, he would have nightmares of being murdered or framed by his rivals. The rivalry mentality in executioner and torturer groups would make it very difficult for him to cope with disability, since his new found vulnerability would mean having once again a target on his back...Also, Charles being inexperienced and clumsy, or illegally applying retentum, or that he considered to send him to a school in Toulouse were the prejudice against executioners and their families was much stronger, he would sometimes have nightmares of Charles' mutilated, battered corpse sent to him. He would later, as they gradually enter apprenticeship, have nightmares of his sons sent to him in a box. Also, the time he went to jail for a short while for botching a hanging, he still has dreams about his ex cell-mate, and how later he had to kill/brand him. Also, would sometimes have dreams of Madeleine still peacefully sleeping in his bed, or him having sex with her. On these nights, he'll hug Jeanne extra tight, who'll welcome the affection, not knowing he thinks of another woman. Because of the quasi-sibling like relationship they shared, his relationship with Madeleine is one that could never be replaced, and he'll never love another partner like he did with her. Given how he's presented all over the manga, I don't think he can sincerely love a woman he doesn't consider related to him. The relationship with his mother is quasi-incestuous, and Anne-Marthe is very misogynistic, and he seems to share her values. Also, being a dynastic executioner, I don't think he'll consider courting, marriying and then having children with a woman he considers a sister, aunt or niece to be morally wrong.

For Charles-Henri, he would have it similar, but the Revolution would drive those dreams to straight up hallucinations of the faces of his victims, of blood and gore. As a youngster, he would sometimes have dreams of his father hugging him, or strangling him. Up to age 23, he would sometimes have nightmares about his physical punishments. Sometimes, he'll see Jean de Chartois. Also, him sleeping around in his mid-twenties, and even after getting married, he would sometimes have sexual dreams regarding his wife or mistress(es). Also, I think the "soft compassionate side" of his personality never left, and mixted with his new playboy lifestyle, given how horribly prostitutes and "loose women" were treated, he would sometimes imagine he'll have to sheer or whip his mistresses, or have news that the magistrates had some sick "games" with them. Also, his wife finding out his infedelity is also one. However, he won't have any incestuous fantasies, and would be grossed out by the prospect. He spent too much time with individuals outside his cast and with the church to consider that...

I don't think Soubise/Subyss would sleep well either, his concious tormenting him a bit as he sleeps. Also, he is someone who always needs to be high on something, be it torture or alcohol. Subyss would often have dreams of being tortured himself, perhaps flashbacks prostituting himself to magistrates or doing tasks for them in the "convulsionaire" secret reunions (what they did there was pretty disgusting). Since torturer isn't enough to make a living on it's own, he'll be a corrector either for the Hôpital Général, colledges or for wealthy nobles with bratty sons or daughters (honestly, who ever happens to offer the most money for the job). I think he might sometimes get emotionally attached to those kids, especially as he shows signs of histrionic personality disorder making one believe that relationships are closer than they actually are. He'll also have sexual dreams about Nicolas, sometimes Damien.

Marie-Josephe: I think on top of flashbacks being tortured as a child, would sometimes have dreams of being held and hugged warmly. Marie-Josephe does have an underlying desire for affection and recognition. She seems genuinely hurt when Charles-Henri refused to support her during that La Barre execution, and we see a flashback asking Charles if he found her disgusting. In that part with the Chevalier Alain Bernard, she wonders if he'll change and leave her like Charles did. Also, we see her mocking and angry after her father asked to step aside so that he can finish Lally/Griffith in one stroke and treat his body with the "respect he deserves". Like, knowing her dad had some lingering friendship and respect for the man who raped her, but little to none to her, nor her mom...That must hurt. Again, Marie seems like someone who secretly wants love and approuval, but doesn't allow herself to indulge in that. However, at night, when she's about to sleep, I can very well imagine she'll have dreams of being hugged warmly by Charles, or by Alain...Maybe by her mother. Although, I don't imagine those dreams being pleasant to her, and she'll probably wake up afterwards with her face twisted into a grimace of pain. Thanks to having chosen the path of female executioner, I think Marie, for all her rebelliousness, does have desires and fantasies of acceptance, just that they bring her a lot of emotional pain.

He has a fixation with skin. Not in a racist way tho, he just likes how skin reacts, as an organ. How it peels off the body from burns, how it rips under sharp blades, how it tears off the muscle if you cut and pull in a certain way. He adores skin.
