In Star Wars we always hear a lot about the rebel alliance, but I feel like a big theme in andor is the effectiveness of small, individual, grassroots acts of rebellion. Brasso tampering with the corpo’s ship. The kid on Ferrix with the homemade pipe bomb. Maarva’s hologram call to arms. The people of Aldhani making their pilgrimage. The sign language on Narkina 5. These are all completely unrelated. The rebel alliance and the main rebel cells are not the only ones rebelling, andor shows people rebelling individually. These aren’t organized, coordinated acts. They don’t have an organization or cause that they are rallying behind, the way Luthen and Saw Gerrera do. They are just simply fighting fascism, one act at a time. Even just their acts of civil disobedience throw the empire off, with the officers panicking, trying desperately to hold complete control. These regular, everyday people are not rebelling for the cause, they’re rebelling to survive. These people have been radicalized firsthand by the oppression and destruction that the empire has brought to their lives.
I think that’s what seems to hit Luthen when he’s on Ferrix. His rebel cell and the others like it are not the only ones rebelling. This regular woman’s call to arms started a revolt. He and the other rebel leaders are not the only ones instigating these acts. Rebellion is everywhere, organized or not.

I love that yet again we see Cassian take a back seat so someone else can rally the troops, someone else takes center stage and the credit.
In this case, it's Maarva. Last time they spoke, he said he didn't understand why she was staying, why she wanted to fight a revolution against an impossible force.
But this time, he gets it. He lets her word be the rallying call for her home, he makes sure EVERYBODY gets to hear it, that the entire town gets called out to listen to her final speech as he goes in to rescue Bix in the shadows.
He runs from hiding place to hiding place as Brasso stands at the front of a crowd, walks them towards a wall of Imperial soldiers, and leads them in the fight for freedom.
Cassian isn't a Big Damn Hero. He's not someone whose name is known or remembered. He's not a leader who makes the big speech to a crowd.
He's a spy. He observes, he notices things, he figures out the plan that has to happen in order to succeed at the goal. He's the one who puts it all together and then steps away from the spotlight so he can do it all over again.

just. losing my damn mind at the way andor shows acts of rebellion. culture is rebellion, language is rebellion, living is rebellion. and of course, like nemik writes, rebellion is collective. individual acts all across the galaxy add up and up and up until the spark catches and the flame bursts. we see it in the townspeople of ferrix — their mourning, their traditions are used as bait for cassian, an attempt to bring stop his acts of rebellion, but it doesn’t work. of course it doesn’t work. they move the funeral forwards, they use the bell tower to signal, they use their strengths to embody rebellion. and it’s just like nemik says — the empire is unnatural, it has to work and work and work to keep people downtrodden and consumed by the imperial machine. so naturally, like we see from cassian and maarva and brasso and the countless citizens of ferrix who are waking up, the empire can’t understand, syril and dedra (both of whom are shown to work and live in highly individualistic, cutthroat environments) can’t understand. that’s how the rebellion wins. together

Do you know how long I’ve wanted to see Imperial Coruscant in a SW tv series?? I LOVE all the details I love the cold, stark unflinching grey colors contrasted to the renaissance hues of the prequels I LOVE the serious and durable architecture that reeks of dystopia I LOVE that there’s not a single inch of the multi species society because it shows just how repressive the Empire is, how industrial and monotone and authoritarian it comes across. It’s frigid, it’s lonely, but below all that you can see that impression stems from something just blatantly evil.
I am LIVING for this world building.

Dedra Meero is everything people seem to see in Anakin. She's SO interesting, so fallible, such a mystery in terms of why she is the way she is, she's horrible, she's a bitch, I am never ever rooting for her, I hope she gets to defeat all of the other men in the ISB.
There is literally nothing about her that is a good person, she is an empty shell of a human being, devoid of any kind of sympathy, empathy, or compassion.
But my gosh is she COMPELLING. That emptiness is the entire point of her, it's the whole REASON she is terrifying. I never want to know her backstory, I never want a logical or sympathetic explanation for why she is the way she is, it would dilute her impact as a character.
I don't want her redeemed, I don't want her to be a Rebel, I have no interest in seeing her become a better person. I hope she gets assigned to the Death Star, or Scarif, and gets blown up.
But she is such an impeccably written villain, especially for the world created in Andor. I wish Star Wars had 10 other villains of this calibre.

I loved that Cassian and Melshi got helped by the alien natives to Narkina 5. It's not just an abandoned wasteland, it's someone's HOME and the Empire is not just destroying the lives of the people in those prisons but also slowly poisoning the livelihoods of the people who already were there.
And there's absolutely nothing these Narkinians can do about it but stick it to the Empire by helping a few prisoners escape. So they do. Cassian and Melshi were about to steal their ship, but the Narkinians see a kinship with them as prisoners who suffered under the Empire and choose kindness when they don't have to.
We didn't get a LOT of aliens in Andor, but I appreciate that this one moment where we did, they utilized it so well.

Madame K, after John Singer Sargent's Madame X
details, progress, and notes below
Sargent is one of my main art inspirations. I've always wanted to do a master study of his iconic portrait, but decided to add a Star Wars spin to it ✨ I love painting Kleya and thought she would fit with this portrait! her dress by Michael Wilkinson is so elegant and iconic. I think the description of the original painting also fits her well: "Sargent shows a woman posing in a black satin dress with jeweled straps, a dress that reveals and hides at the same time." I thought it was an interesting choice that Kleya's red, "disguise" outfit stands out more than her gallery one, while Luthen's outfits are the opposite. almost like she's hiding in plain sight.
I kept the ring as part of my Kleya/Luthen AU.

I’m thinking a lot about how Andor as a show opposes a lot of the ideas of the Jedi code, and I’ve seen a few people put their thoughts on the lines about trying, so I thought I’d toss my brain in the ring
“Do or do not, there is no try”: a 1983 message about motivation and taking control of your own motivation and purpose. Do nothing by half measure, you have to have intent to succeed or you’ll never make it. In a movie that has been officially stated to be anti-war commentary about the protests against the Vietnam war, it makes sense that this would have a double meaning for viewers. Given by a wise old master to a young man as passing along wisdom.
“Remember this: try”: a 2022 message in a time where way more people feel absolutely hopeless about the state of the world. No matter how dismal you think it might be, you can make a chip against the despair in the world. If you just try a little, make an effort, it will help. In a show that’s blatantly anti fascist and anti capitalist, it’s clearly meant to be a message that just a little does something, even if it all seems futile. Said by a young rebel in a manifesto that he’s writing against the fist of the Empire.
Obviously this is a good amount of nonsense, it’s currently past 2 am and I’m kinda rambling, but my god. My god. This show has taken over my mind entirely
