In the Black Fantastic ‘Afrofuturism’ is a sub-genre that takes aim at the heart of racial injustice. This exhibition celebrates the Black artists who wield that utopian weapon. ‘In the Black Fantastic’ at ‘Hayward Gallery’ uses sci-fi to imagine a future beyond inequality, beyond racism, in a powerful and affecting fashion. ‘In the Black Fantastic’ starts with Nick Cave (not that one) and his wearable sculptures, first created in response to the brutal police murder of Rodney King in LA in 1991. They’re fantastical, glittery, hyper-colour costumes that allow the wearer to transform themselves, to sculpt and define their identity, obscuring their race and gender. They’re defiant, empowering and brazen. Wangechi Mutu also makes art to destroy hierarchies, with watery collages of hybrid beings that exist behind tropes and stereotypes. Then there’s Hew Locke’s Black warriors on horseback, elaborate militaristic figures that look like statues of future generals, and Tabita Rezaire’s psychedelic mirrored room with its pyramid glistening in the centre. Downstairs is young American artist Sedrick Chisom’s incredible visions of a post-apocalyptic future earth where all people of colour have left and the skin of those who remain has started to darken. They’re funny, threatening, imposing paintings, humming with satirical tension. Elektronisch Kolonialisme -Tabita Rezaire

Na het lezen van ‘Elektronish Kolonialisme’ door Tatita Rezaire had ik er verschillende bedenkingen over. Ze praat over hoe hard we zijn losgekoppeld van de realiteit en we hier niet bij stilstaan. Wat is Wijsheid tegenwoordig? Volgens Tatita Rezaire denken we niet meer na over wat we van informatie in ons hebben, en we hier niet bij stilstaan maar ‘snel het internet raadplegen’ alsof het iets negatiefs is. Ik ga eerlijk zeggen dat ik hier niet helemaal mee eens ben. Wij als mens evolueren, we creëren hierbij verschillende gebruiksvoorwerpen en ontdekken nieuwe dingen, waarvan ‘het internet’ er een van is. Het internet is ontstaan voor het communiceren naar elkaar, dit is al snel veranderd na verloop van tijd. We sturen niet alleen berichten, maar kunnen online spellen spelen tot zelfs vliegtuigen besturen. Ja er zijn negatieve kanten hier aan, en ja dit is een erg grote vernieuwing voor mensen die niet in mijn tijdperk zijn geboren en die dit niet ‘normaal’ vinden maar als je een vraag hebt over iets en het antwoord wil weten (al is het een naam van een film die je bent vergeten) en je kan deze met een paar toetsen terugvinden, wat is hier dan zo erg aan? Waarom kan het raadplegen van een computer voor zo iets simpel dan zo slecht zijn Rezaire? Natuurlijk zijn er minpunten aan, bij de meeste dingen zijn er minpunten. Het deel waar ze over ‘onderzeese glasvezelkabels die heel ons ecosysteem verstoren’ praat, geef ik haar wel gelijk. Het zou ook op een andere manier moeten kunnen (ook al lijkt dit niet een groot probleem te zijn op dit moment) waarbij we de natuur niet moeten verstoren, maar is dit dan een prioriteit? Ik vind de manier waarop het internet in elkaar zit fascinerend, het kan inderdaad vaak vervelend zijn met al die reclames, maar zij (social media) moeten ook een manier vinden om hun kost te verdienen, als je de reclame dan zo vervelend vindt en je er van overtuigd bent dat ze jou persoonlijke informatie gaan stelen, ga dan van het internet en ga je informatie uit boeken halen. Mensen klagen graag over alles, ik ook, maar als je dan zo graag verandering wilt in zaken, verander het dan voor jezelf, doe hier dan niet aan mee of vindt dan een andere manier die voor jou wel past.

Mijn reactie op het artikel van Tabita Rezaire.

Op 04/03/20 lazen we in de klas het artikel van Tabita Rezaire en bespraken we dit achteraf. Tijdens de besprekingen in de les was ik al zeer uitgesproken over mijn onenigheid met het artikel. In het artikel vergelijkt ze slaven uit de 19e eeuw met de moderne mens en hoe wij in haar ogen slaven zijn van grote bedrijven zoals: Google en Facebook etc. Dit vindt ik een zeer slechte vergelijking, het vergelijkt de onmenselijke toestanden van tijdens de slavernij met de enorme luxe die we nu hebben. Want dat is het een luxe we kiezen ervoor om gebruik te maken van sociale media etc. Dit is een tweede rede n waarom ik het een slechte vergelijking is, we krijgen de keuzen om mee te doen aan deze internet cultuur, we kiezen er zelf voor om onze gegevens aan deze mega bedrijven te geven. In haar artikel verteld ze dat de eerste internet kabels op de bodem van de zee dezelfde route volgen als de kabels van het telegrafienetwerk dat het Britse kolonies vroeger verbond. Hier mee wil ze een statement maken. Ik denk dat dit een lauter praktisch toeval is, het is logisch dat men deze zelfde routes gebruikte om kabels te leggen omdat hier al kabels lagen en deze routes makkelijk vindbaar zijn hierdoor. Tabita schrijft in haar artikel ook over de toegankelijkheid van het internet. Wat inderdaad een probleem is, maar in haar tekst wil ze dit ingebrand brengen met Europeaanse en USA grootmacht en de overmacht van deze rijke gebieden. Met deze uitspraak Heb ik enkele problemen, eerst en vooral (en dit geldt voor heel het artikel) Ze vernoemt nergens China wat op het vlak van internet de echte grootmacht is. Wanneer boeken voor het eerst op de markt kwamen waren deze ook eerst niet voor iedereen toegankelijk daarom is het logisch dat internet momenteel ook nog niet voor iedereen toegankelijk is. Het internet wordt veel sneller toegankelijk voor iedereen dan wanneer dit gebeurde met boeken daarom wringt deze uitspraak van haar bij mij. Ik denk dat het verschil van leeftijd en daardoor perspectief op het onderwerp voor al deze onenigheden zorgt. Het slot van haar artikel ben ik het wel mee eens, Het internet is een tool die kan dienen om de wereld ofwel te verkloten, ofwel hem te verbinden.

In the Black Fantastic As part of the ‘In The Black Fantastic’ season at the Southbank Centre, the ‘Hayward Gallery’ is hosting an exhibition of the same name, showcasing the work of 11 contemporary artists from the African diaspora whose work explores myth, science fiction, spiritual traditions and ‘Afrofuturism’. Curated by Ekow Eshun, the exhibition features painting, video, sculpture, photography and installations from artists including Nick Cave, Sedrick Chisom, Ellen Gallagher, Wangechi Mutu and Tabita Rezaire that address cultural liberation and social injustice. The ultimate connection between all the artists in this show is their overwhelming passion: a force of feeling that translates into vision, music, poetry, ethos and form in the most original ways. The context, explicit or otherwise, is the narrative of black history. 'In the Black Fantastic’ ends with Kara Walker’s latest shadow-play film. Using nothing but black, white and red cut-paper silhouettes, Walker tells several interconnected stories, from the Oklahoma City bombings perpetrated by the white supremacist Timothy McVeigh in 1995 to the horrific racist murder three years later of the African American James Byrd, dragged to his death from the back of a pickup truck in Texas. It is only the smallest tribute to Walker’s gifts to say that her marvellous graphic precision is both as delicate as a ballet and yet unforgettably tragic. Its score, by the Minneapolis musician ‘Lady Midnight’ - fusing ragtime, rock, funk and soul - is tuned to perfection.
