Shogun (2024) / Awaiting Kirin (2020)
There will always be war between good and evil. The evil will forever want to dominate, abuse and exploit others. The good will always want to fight back, demand justice and protect their families.
Akechi Mitsuhide (the man that inspires the character of Mariko's father) used to believe Oda Nobunaga to be the one to unify the warring states and usher an era of peace but Oda got greedy.
Akechi began to plot against Oda after he ordered the killings of monks, peasants, women and children on Mount Hiei, to send a message to his enemies of the consequences of their defiance.
At the time, Akechi was in contact with Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga). When Akechi knew that Tokugawa would be the one to unify Japan, Akechi risk his own life to remove Oda to clear the path for him.
Tokugawa laid low when Akechi overthrew Oda. When Hideyoshi (Taiko) returns to avenge Oda, he kills everyone except Tokugawa who was "neutral" when in fact he was bidding his time to take over.
Which is why in the show, Shogun, Toranaga is close to Mariko (Akechi's daughter) and is growing impatient as he wants to remove the remnants of the Taiko and Oda as quickly as possible.
Lady Ochiba (Taiko's Consort) knows of Toranaga's true intentions, which is why she fully distrust and hate him, that she could not wait any longer and push Ishido and the Council to move quickly.
[You know, it would've been cool if they got Hiroki Hasegawa to play Akechi in Shogun! I've watched several actors playing Akechi, but Hiroki Hasegawa managed to nail the conflicted character nicely!)

The stunning Machida Keita as Fujiwara no Kintō!
Kintō's robes are black (left) while Tadanobu and Michinaga's (not pictured) are scarlet, as he is of a higher rank.

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO the 2026 Taiga drama is about Hidenaga!!!
"Toyotomi Brothers" the title says
Tumblr media
The summary seems alright, since it said the brothers were dreaming of a world with no fighting and stuff, but fffffssss... Hoping with all my might that it won't have an "evulz Hideyoshi" plot, because it's all portrayed in such baseless ways and sensationalised and I just hate them.
Like, I generally don't mind a narrative of someone with good intentions get caught up in difficult situation, and has simply could not take the mental strain and just deteriorate. I'm ok with it with Nobu and Hide both. It's just... I don't know if it's just the culture of Japanese storytelling in general to be overdramatic, or if Japanese writers are just too tied to tropes.
All of the so-called "realistic" attempt of Sengoku adaptations are still so tropey as hell and I just had to nope out.
I sure damn hope this drama won't be about "Hidenaga watches in despair as his brother slowly turn evil".

Dousuru Ieyasu’s Twitter account released some Oichi teasers so I did a little article hunting (since I can’t find the stream for this episode to look at).
“Tomboy” Oichi is something that I see very often in manga, but I think this is the first time I’m seeing it in live action. She’s even wearing the two-coloured kimono that Nobunaga often wears in dramas (katamigawari kimono, it’s a real fashion that already existed since the late Kamakura period).
The actress commented that her role feels more like “Nobunaga’s younger brother” than a younger sister. I think the writers created this in reference to this widespread legend where Nobuanaga said that if Oichi had been a man, she would've been a great warrior. I wonder if that will change, because I’ve seen some stories make her lose that “tomboyness” after getting married.
A rather unique take here is that when Nobunaga and Ieyasu* was forming their alliance after Okehazama, Nobunaga proposed that Ieyasu marry Oichi. However, Oichi refused, despite apparently harbouring feelings for Ieyasu. Apparently in this scenario, they had became close at the time when young Ieyasu was snatched up by the Oda.
I’ve seen unusual romances pop up in novels or manga (Ieyasu being in love with Oichi happened in the Nobunaga Concerto manga), but I don’t know if NHK Taiga dramas ever did this before. NHK is being really daring with this. I applaud them for trying, though, haha. I always welcome new takes.
*) Ieyasu still goes by Motoyasu at this point, but supposedly he will become “Ieyasu” only a few months after he allied with Nobunaga.

Japanese Period Dramas
Seeing how many people love Shogun, I think it's a waste that many existing similar Japanese period dramas such as these cannot be found on streaming sites like Netflix, Disney, Hulu, Fx, HBO, etc.
Top Left : Sekigahara
A depiction of the historical Battle of Sekigahara between Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari. The events which inspires James Clavell's Shogun in his depiction of the civil war between Toranaga (inspired by Tokugawa) and Ishido (inspired by Ishida).
Top Right : Awaiting Kirin
A historical biopic of Akechi Mitsuhide. The character that inspires James Clavell's Shogun in his depiction of Mariko's father . He served the dictator Oda Nobunaga (Goroda in James Clavell's Shogun) before Akechi betrays and kills Oda.
Bottom Right : Baragaki : Unbroken Samurai
Set in the 19th century, follows the life of Toshizo Hijikata, the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi and fought against the Meiji Restoration. The historical character, Jules Burnet, that inspires Tom Cruise's character in The Last Samurai, appears briefly in this.
Bottom Left : Yae no Sakura
This historical biopic follows the life of Yae Niijima who led the defense of Aizu alongside women warriors like Takeko Nakano who fought till the death against the Imperials during Boshin War, after the male family members and warriors are dead or injured.

Like flying (Satoshi Ichiyanagi: NHK Taiga drama theme song) Classic
youtube
Japan's Modern Revolution: The leading figure in the Meiji Restoration: Satsuma Domain. Sakurajima in this area has been an active volcano since recorded history, with frequent eruptions that have had a major impact on Satsuma's culture and people's minds. This song is reminiscent of the great eruption of Sakurajima and is a masterpiece that makes you feel the depressed energy of Satsuma. The expression of this violent explosive power is probably the best among the theme songs of taiga dramas. Satoshi Ichiyanagi did a good job.

Left: Ieyasu, Right: Masayuki
Hey Dousuru staff... what the hell?? Why is Masayuki so ancient-looking compared to Ieyasu? IRL Masayuki is 5 years younger than Ieyasu, you know. This is a Taiga drama, not an otome game where the characters are aged-up to facilitate the romance.
Is it so hard to get a somewhat younger actor to be in the Masayuki role??? Like, even if this guy doesn't wear the white hair wig, he is still very very visibly a much older person than Matsumoto (the Ieyasu actor). Get someone in the 40s age rage or something. They'd be still young-ish enough to pass as a younger guy and then in the episodes where you need them to look old, you can easily make them old.
Argh, to think I had such high hopes for this when I heard that they did away with evil Yoshimoto and evil Tsukiyama. But then it just turned into absurd fluff that shits on Nobunaga (amidst weird BL vibes), and it's just... Why.

So uh apparently Christian music has been terrible for at least 130 years
Explanatory notes: This scene is from a Japanese Taiga drama called Yae's Sakura which is about the life of a Japanese educator and feminist Yamamoto Yae, which spanned from the Bakumatsu (1853-1867) all the way to Japan's invasion of China in the 1930s. This specific scene is from the 1870s when Yae first met her future husband who happened to be a Jesus guy. Yae's husband was trying to set up a Jesus school in Japan and he can't help but sing Christian music to the students.
