Every Second (Angst Valorant Yoru x Reader)

Yoru laid on his bed, staring emptily at the ceiling. He’d lost his sense of time, being cooped up in this gray room for days he didn’t bother to count. His clothes stuck to him, and so did his hair, its dye fading as every hour passed. His eyes were unfocused, his breath shallow. The only sound he could hear was the perpetual ticking of his clock, edging him to insanity with each second, together with the faint beating of his cold heart.

He was only kept sane by the visions he had, the memories he kept replaying in his head. They were better than sleep, because even if he saw you as beautiful and happy as he remembered you to be, you still showed up in his nightmares.

He’d rather stay awake and choose what he saw than gamble on sleep and seeing you die over and over and over again. If he had to see that nightmare again, he might just lose his mind.

He buried that bad dream, that nightmare, deep inside his brain but it kept gnawing at him, crawling and scratching. It was driving him to madness. He couldn’t sleep from it. He couldn’t eat. His clothes sagged on his body, and no matter how much the other agents try, they couldn’t get him out of the room.

He wouldn’t even leave it to go to your funeral.

He fooled himself into thinking you were still here.

“Y/N L/N. I’m the new agent. Nice to meet you,” you greeted, smiling happily and raising your hand to shake his. He only stares at it with an unamused look, then he looks back at you. “I know you’re trying to get on our good graces, but it’s a dumb move to expose your real name,” he says curtly, tucking his hands deeper in his pockets.

You raise a brow, challenging him. “And how would you know if that was my real name?” You say innocently, putting your hand down.

He narrows his eyes at you. “Tch. As if any callsign would be that long,” he accused.

“You still wouldn’t be able to tell if that was my real name. It could be an alias for all you know, or a fake identity. Checkmate.” You shrugged and smiled smugly.

He scowled at your remark. “Alright smartass. Real name or not, I don’t need it to put you in your place. So, stay in your lane unless you want me to do it for you. Got that L/N?” He warns grimly, ready to turn around and head back to the briefing room.

You indulge his threats by giving him a nod, still smiling smugly. “Yes Sir. Aye aye, Captain. Will do, boss.” You were relentless in getting on his nerves.

“That’s Yoru to you,” he answers your unasked question. Finally you smile at him, and his heart skips a beat.

You had a pretty smile. It somehow sent an electric current up his spine, and he had to look away.

“Nice to meet you Yoru. Hoping we work with each other soon, you seem a lot of fun!”

This was how you both first met. You were a trusting person, even if he wasn’t the most amicable agent in the protocol. Deep inside, he was glad that you weren’t quick to judge based on his rugged and intimidating appearance. And he admired that you didn’t take his shit lying down. You were good at twisting every situation to your favor.

If he knew how short your time together would be, he would have shaken your hand. He would bask in the warmth of your skin, and he would never let you go.

“L/N, visual in A?”

“6 meters, 10 o’clock, Cypher cam, destroy it before pushing.”

“I need healing.”

“I’ll meet you in the LZ. Until then, please keep safe Yoru.”

“Don’t need to tell me twice. Make it there L/N.”

“Roger that.”

He remembered missions with you, and how in sync you both were. You watched his back, he watched yours.

“Good gunning out there L/N. Not on my level, but not too bad.”

“Har, har, Yoru. But seriously, thanks for saving my butt earlier. A little later and I would’ve been toast!”

“No need to make a big fuss over nothing. Next time, wait for me before you push. I’ll clear the way for you.”

“Awww, you’re so sweet~ Said like a true gentleman.”

“Urusai. I’m saying it as a duelist.”

“But I like it when you flirt~ More of a Phoenix trait. But it suits you too.”

“…I can be smooth when I want to be.”

He remembers the banter you both shared, the friendly competitions, the names you called each other. He was your dumbass, you were his idiot.

“You’re such a dumbass! Why did you have to run in the rain? Now look at you, all snotty and icky.”

“The fuck is that supposed to me—ACHOO!”

“Point proven. Be thankful I’m here wiping your snot and changing your towel.”

“Hey, I wasn’t the idiot who left their phone on the other side of the base.”

“I told you that I would get it myself Yoru. I was literally grabbing an umbrella.”

“You took too long. It would’ve drowned if it weren’t for me.”

“And look where that got you. You’re so stupid sometimes, I don’t know what goes through your head.”

“Can you just be thankful I saved your phone? And be thankful that you’re the one who’s not sick right now?”

“…yeah. Thanks, dumbass. What would I do without you.”

“You would be buying a new phone, that’s what you would be doing.”

He was such a loner in the protocol, even with Phoenix and Neon around. He never thought love was meant for people like him; people who had no space in their heart other than their own selfish goals. He couldn’t keep friendships for long, let alone romances. So, he never really gave it much thought.

But ever since he met you, it’s as if the world he knew was flipped upside down. He felt like there was something more to look forward to everyday. He had someone other than himself, and you made him feel less alone. Whenever his eyes met yours, he felt like a weight was being lifted off in his heart. His chest feels open and somehow the world just seems brighter.

Looking at you, hearing your voice, feeling your warmth, it made him want to fall in love.

“Happy birthday, Yoru~ Happy birthday Yoru~!”

He was in the basement garage when you suddenly entered through the backdoor, holding a plate of chocolate cake, crudely pierced with a single candle. He didn’t celebrate his birthday. He didn’t need to. For years, it had always been just any other day of the year. By mistake he mentioned the date to you, but thought nothing of it.

And for the first time ever, in years, someone remembered.

He rose from his seat on the floor, wearing a gray shirt and black sweatpants, his hair down but headbanned. He was tinkering with his bike, and he had oil smears everywhere. He furrowed his brows at you as you walked carefully, making sure the candle stayed lit in the drafty room.

“Happy birthday, dear Yoru, happy birthday to you~!” You finished, holding up the plate, the candlelight flickering in front of your face. “Tada! Got you a cake. I don’t know what flavor you preferred but chocolate was the safest option so I went with it.” You smiled shyly.

“L/N, you shouldn’t have…” he starts, staring at the flame as it waved invitingly. “I wanted to bake you a cake, and believe me, I tried. But it ended up in disaster so I just rushed out of the island as fast as I could and bought a cake instead. Sorry,” you apologized, and he shook his head in disbelief.

“I don’t celebrate my birthday L/N. You shouldn’t have bothered,” he replies sternly, turning back to tinker with the bike. His heart was pounding, overwhelmed. Someone remembered, and it squeezed at his heart.

Someone cared. Someone bothered to remember him.

“Hey! I didn’t get this cake for you to just brush me off! Turn around and make a wish, dumbass.” You scowled, kicking his foot. When he was able to calm his heart, he turned around and glared, rolling his eyes. “Go on,” you held the plate higher for him, and he stared at you for a moment, making his wish. After a while, he bent down and blew the candle off, earning a wide smile from you. His heart skips a beat.

“What did you wish for?” You asked curiously, and he scowls. “None of your business. Now stop bugging me, I’m working on the bike.” He waves at you dismissively. He didn’t want you to see him get emotional over a cake.

“Aren’t you going to eat the cake?” You asked hopefully, your smile fading. His heart clenches. Fuck.

“Just leave it by the table. I can’t eat right now, I’m smothered in oil grease.”

“Well, take a break! Sit down, I’ll feed you the cake.”

“Iyada. No way.”

“Just sit down! Or else I’m not leaving.”

“Fine.”

You both shared that cake, despite his protests about using a single fork. You sat on the table cross-legged while he leaned against it. He would turn to you occasionally for a piece of cake that you would feed him. Meanwhile, you talked about how hard it was to bake a cake, and he listened absentmindedly.

His heart was so full, he couldn’t focus on your voice. Someone remembered him. Someone cared enough to try and bake a cake for him. For the first time in a while, he didn’t spend his birthday alone.

“What does stiff peaks mean? Well, it means that when you pull your whisk off the egg whites, it stands on its own. What did I do? I put it in while it was still foamy and runny. I… are you okay?” You asked as you noticed his eyes watering.

He then turns his head to the opposite direction, a few tears fall from his eyes, and he quickly wipes them away. “Oil grease,” he mutters, and you believed him. And while you continued talking, he took a big breath.

This was the best birthday celebration he ever had. He really didn’t wish for anything when he blew the candle, but now he was truly making one: he wished to spend the rest of his birthdays with you.

You stayed with him as he worked on his bike back then. He should have told you how he felt then, so that your time as lovers was longer. Even if it was just by a few weeks.

He’d make every second he had with you count.

“W-why are we separating from the crowd?” You laughed as he dragged you to the terrace. The party going on inside the base was getting rowdy, and he wanted you all to himself.

You had a martini on your hand, topped with a grape pierced with a mini umbrella. You were a bit flustered from the alcohol, and so was he. He needed the extra liquid courage. Because as much as he was unafraid to push sites with the threat of bullets going through his skull, he was more scared of messing this up.

He held your hand as you both stood by the banister, the sunset over the ocean illuminating your faces. With the dewy sunset glow on your face, your hair gracefully flowing to ocean breeze, and your smile that he adored so much, he felt so in love. He couldn’t keep it to himself anymore.

“What?” You smiled shyly, primping your hair, feeling a bit conscious from his staring. He squeezed your hand, willing himself to speak.

He remembered this memory so vividly. If only he knew, he’d repeat these same words to you everyday.

“Y/N L/N, what I feel about you is hard to explain. And I know I’ll fuck up my words anytime I try. The best way to go about it was to just explain what I go through whenever you’re with me, and whenever you’re gone.

“Y/N, when I’m with you, I feel weightless. I never understood what butterflies in the stomach meant until you came into my life. Whenever you’re close to me, my heart beats so fast as if I ran a marathon across the globe. Whichever direction I chose to run, I always kept coming back to you.

“And when you’re gone, the world just seems so foreign. My day doesn’t go by without the thought of you. I admit that I’m very selfish with my time. In this line of work, there isn’t an abundance of it, but somehow for you, I am not selfish. Keep me up at night, occupy my daydream. Take all my time, waste it if you’d like. Just as long as I’m with you in every second of it.

“I… fuck. Okay, fuck it. I love you. That’s the shortest way to put it.” He blurted out, grimacing. He was so focused on spilling his heart out that he didn’t notice that you were blushing madly against the sunlight. He looks at you as you stared at him with wide eyes, mouth agape. “Yoru…” you whispered, and he avoids your eyes.

“I know. I sound so pathetic right now. But the more I spend time with you, the harder it gets to pretend I don’t want you that way. I was never looking for anything like this, but… you’re all I want now.” He sighs, leaning on the banister.

You stood there frozen, too shocked to even say anything. You knew Yoru as someone who just kept to himself, he didn’t like sharing his emotions. Sure, he’d occasionally make sure you knew he was mad by yelling, but you never knew how much he could keep from you.

You watch him as he grasped at his hair, pulling it in frustration. “You even make me say shit I wouldn’t normally say, kuso. I sound so disgusting right now.” He sighs again, looking back at you.

You were in tears, the sunset’s dying light reflecting from your tears.

“R-Ryo… I thought… you’d never say it…” you smiled through the tears. “Fuck, finally, you say it first! I fucking love you too idiot!” You cry, all the pent-up affection released as you jump and hug him, his strong arms catching you. You hugged him tightly, your feet kicking in the air. You took his breath away with those words.

“I wanted to tell you first but I was scared that you weren’t ready. And that if I told you, you’d push me away,” you pulled away, holding his cheeks as he held you up. “I fucking love you Ryo Kiritani, and from now on, I’ll make sure you know that every second of the day, 24/7, 365 days a year.” You laughed, and before long, he cracked a smile. “I…I love you too. I do.”

He smiled at the ceiling at the memory. He loved your smile, he loved your laugh, he loved the way you say his name. A cold tear rolls from his eye down to the side of his cheek. He still gets butterflies even now.He wipes the stray tear with his hand, but he doesn’t bother wiping the rest that fall from his eyes. He silently weeps, calling out your name.

“Y/N,” he weeped. “Y/N, please Y/N, come back please,” he begged. No one listened. He was alone in this cold room, rotting his life away. No one answers to him here but his own mind.

Maybe he just had to call your name harder.

“FUCK, Y/N!!!! WHY?! WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BE SO FUCKING SELFLESS?! WHY, PLEASE COME BACK AND TELL ME!” He screamed from the top of his lungs, and arm landing against his eyes. They couldn’t stop his tears. “I CAN’T! I CAN’T FUCKING LIVE WITHOUT YOU.” His voice was hoarse but he doesn’t relent, squeezing his chest with his other hand. His wails were heard beyond the door.

It hurts Y/N, it hurts.

He wraiths as he cries, screaming and weeping helplessly. He just wanted you back, he just wanted things back to the way they were. He grabbed his head with both hands and squeezed, wanting to just disappear. He’d go in and out of this trance, and the others were extremely worried about his mental health.

Shit, the nightmare was coming back again.

“What’s your situation there?!” Brimstone calls from the comms, and Yoru shakily grabs the radio. He was bleeding from his mouth, his stab wounds leaking the blood from his body by the milliliter.

“Y/N… Me… Phoenix a-and KJ were all ambushed. They planted t-the spike. It’s about to detonate soon, the two are unconcious,” he struggles to say, drawing in sharp breaths. He looked at you and how pale you were. He was screaming at himself in his mind, trying to come up with ways to get you all out of this situation.

He coughs but covers his mouth, seeing blood stain his gloves. KJ and Phoenix both lost too much blood, they were unconscious. And by the unfocused look in your eyes, you were next. In futile attempt to keep you awake, he slams his fist into your hand, and you stir. “Stay awake L/N, don’t you dare close your eyes,” he warns, and you give him a smile.

Brim ran all the way from the opposite side of the map and saw how bloodied everyone was. He took one look at the spike and his heart dropped. “I can only carry two people. Can you both walk?” He asks desperately, staring at the spike.

“I got shot in the leg but I can manage. Y/N can’t. Lost too much blood.” He reasons, forcing his legs to stand up, and he fails, dropping down to the ground. Without thinking, Brimstone grabs the two unconscious agents and mounts them on his shoulders. “We won’t make it,” he whispers to himself, trying to find a way where he can save everyone.

“You will. I can still set up my barriers. They’ll protect you from the explosion, but you have to keep running. It only lasts 3 seconds.” You say, sitting up properly. You look at the spike, then back at Yoru. “You have to go, now.”

“Are you crazy?! Your barriers can only house 3 people!” He yells, his eyes wide, and you shake your head in response.

“I’ll use the power of the radianite around us to make it fit for the 4 of you. You have to go. Brim, you know what to do.” You then began to concentrate the energy you had left into your hands, and Brimstone nods. He could not speak.

“No! There has to be another way, we’re not leaving you here!” He grabs your wrists to stop you from using your abilities, but as you hear the spike ticking away its last few seconds, you smile at him.

“Promise me you’ll survive Ryo.”

“No! I’m not leaving you here!”

“Ryo, you know there’s no other way. Please promise me you’ll go with Brim.”

“Damare!” He cries, holding on to you for dear life.

“We have to go, NOW.” Brim yells. The spike’s beeping increases its speed, and Yoru gulps in denial.

“Promise me, you’ll survive.” You say one last time, and finally, he nods, chest tight. He grabbed your face and kissed you, as if it was the last time he would feel your warm lips on his.

And it truly was the last time.

As Brim grabbed on his shoulder to pull him away, and as the barrier covered him and the rest, he watched as you smiled, even in the most daunting of situations.

He loved that smile so much. Now it’s the last thing he will see from you.

It all happened so quickly but for him, it felt like an eternity. He saw how you closed your eyes as the spike detonated, he saw how your flesh disintegrated with every inch of the explosion nearing you. And he watched you disappear into the explosion, leaving nothing but a dark glow.

As the explosion pulled back, he and the others were safe. Brim stood there for a moment, trying to keep himself levelheaded as he arranged a pickup. Yoru kneeled behind him, looking at the place where you sat before the explosion, your blood still fresh on the ground.

But you weren’t there.

“Y/N’s…gone…” he cried silently, clenching his fists. “Y/N… Y/N!” He screamed, hitting the ground with his gloved fists. Brim could only listen as the young man screamed in agony. He had lost the love of his life in a doomed mission, all because of his negligence. He underestimated the mirror agents, and now you and Yoru paid dearly for his mistake.

Without a body, Sage couldn’t do anything. She couldn’t revive you, no matter how much Yoru begged and yelled for her to do so. It came to a point where he was knocked unconscious by Sova because he was too much for Sage. They were all sad, it wasn’t just him who lost someone. But they understood why.

Yoru was always alone, and you were his only light. You saw him for who he was, flaws and all, and accepted him. You loved him, and he loved you. It was unfair. The only time he had someone who he cared about so much, and fate takes them away from him. He didn’t know if he could keep your promise; he couldn’t survive knowing you weren’t by his side anymore.

He couldn’t accept it. He couldn’t bear with the pain. He wanted to believe that you were still here, lying on the bed with him. He repeated the same memories over and over again, just so he could feel you here. He just wanted you back. He just wanted you to hug him and say that everything that happened was just a nightmare.

Your dying smile, the same smile that he loved, will forever haunt him, for every second he is awake and asleep.

HII so TY SO SO much for rebloggin my stendy (kinda??) FIC!! :DDD im super glad u enjoyed it and i loved readin all the lil hashtag thingies ??!!! i would've responded to the reblog but im still not too sure how tumblr works,, or how to dm folks. BUT JUST TY SO MUCH! it means the world to me <33

of course !!! I loved it so so much :’) (dw abt Tumblr, at first it’s a doozy but you’ll get the hang of it !!) (I also write everything and anything in my tags, so thank u haha)

I know ur fic was more Wendy-centric for her development and character, (which, thank you—we love girlboss Wendy, I love her so) but the stendy got me really hooked just because of the way you wrote them ! I like being able to see their flaws as a couple—without wendy being perceived as a total bitch (like some anti’s in the fandom paint her out to be) and Stan being honest with his feelings instead of completely neglecting/ghosting her like he does. In the fic, Wendy does prioritize her life so she can build a life with Stan, but she doesn’t realize she’s hurting him in the process. It’s how the two of them should be written. They do have toxic traits in the show that are very questionable ( their jealousy, for starters… stan’s dependency on her, wendy’s insecurity with everything stan does that’s not controllable…) but it’s times like in this writing where they do grow a bit and finally accept they don’t work out. It’s extremely hard on them because they’ve been so co-dependent that they can’t see life without the other.

on that same coin however, people need to understand that they can work together but they have such big contrasts and complications that they have to work on for the relationship they want.

sometimes they just. need to be on their own to figure that out. and that’s why this story ended up being so good because Wendy found her worth and now knows what and who she is without him.

they need to take care—find themselves before they can have someone else.

Wendy needed this. She’s such an activist in the show and in this story…Stan at the time just wasn’t helping like she thought he was. And he knew. He needed to let go.

Wendy is her own self at the end. It’s so nice to see. We love character development and to see her find confidence in who Wendy Testaburger is and will continue to be.

it was really refreshing, really. thank u <3 thank u for giving wendy depth bc that’s my baby girl and I love her forever

dude so i found out ab rwys likeeeee 3-4 days ago ish? and its ALL IVE BEEN DOING HELP. like Yes its bad that ive neglected my responsibilities but SRSLY i just cant stop reading wtf. after replaying the game recently my hyperfixation for it was reignited and i was on the HUNT FOR A GOOD FIC LMAO. and there it was...... rwys.

Fr tho, I'm gooddd! We're really fortunate to have not been part of the low level areas in the city since a LOT of places flooded (praying for those who got affected fr, flooding is so bad especially in our country ), hell even our school building got flooded which made us have one day of suspension for the whole week (thank god tho, walking around in a building that's completely tiled and wet in HEELS?
