So, let's set the scene: The hardworking crew of the Rae'dinnah are at each other's throats, so Suzo decides it's time for a ✨group bonding activity✨ and what better way to bond than being stuck together in the wilderness for three whole days. His arboreal ass is perfectly content to sling a hammock up in a tree and take a nap in the sunshine.

Because GEA inquisitors deserve a little fresh air too, of course, even if the poor zal is frantically trying to get through to a SINGLE supervisor, zuu doesn't CARE if it's poor form to abandon a posting, the captain is trying to force zuur to sleep outside -- there's a perfectly serviceable ship right there. So Sevak is over it before they even land. Does zuu have a good time? Ehhhh jury's out on that one, but zuu's happy as a clam to get the fuck back on the ship after that third day I can tell you that much.

Liki is trying SO hard to be helpful. Really, bless her heart. But she's tall for a terrestrial ix'ai at 2'10, and her frill keeps getting in the way, and she accidentally tied her tail around one of the tent stakes instead of the rope and--

Wow, wouldja look at that. Vigo's already done setting up the rest of the tents, so she saves Liki from the synthetic canvas nightmare and ends up giving the poor girl the BIGGEST (literally, miss ma'am is 8'3 and built like a house) crush. Stars bless butches.

Dekdek AND Cosh AND Rees are banished to the naughty log. Horrible little firebugs, the lot of them. They're allowed a single lighter so they can at least smoke, but only after a gratuitous amount of whining from Rees, and they have to give it back once they're lit up.

Eternal dad Suzo is the keeper of the lighter and bringer of fire to the firepit -- which Dekdek was allowed to dig. Uknuks are SO good at digging. Suzo also has the map, the first aid kit, and the bug spray, which he threatens Sevak with any time zuu starts grumbling again.

Gatha cooks on the ship, naturally Gatha is cooking at the campsite, and Roki is guarding the marshmallows so xe has something to do -- xe's still pretty skittish, after all -- until xe manages to eat half the bag while Gatha's back is turned.

Now Roki's banished to the naughty log, and Rees is granted custody of the marshmallows.

Rees eats the rest of the marshmallows.

Wiley - Godfather III

I thought I should start this by giving a short intro to Wiley. Widely accredited by fans and artists as a pioneer of the Grime scene, it would be impossible to overstate the impact he’s made in Grime, in fact it would be impossible to overstate the importance that he’s made to UK music in general. Starting off as a member of Pay As U Go Wiley first began his life in UK Garage, eventually as Pay As U Go disbanded Wiley went on to form Roll Deep, containing Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder and many more. This was where we really started to hear an evolution of the UK Garage sound and things started to sound more like the Grime that we came to know and love. It’s certainly not just Wiley who thinks he’s the “Godfather,” not many in the scene would argue that, but he’s certainly not going to let you forget it.

A lot of newer fans were put off with last years altercations with just about anyone who makes any music, after Wiley was widely publicised to have labelled Drake as a “pagan,” and Ed Sheeran as a “culture vulture,” before taking a much more direct approach with Stormzy, firstly sending very direct tweets on Twitter before the pair released a few tracks which must have been absolutely shocking if you hadn’t grown up watching Lord of the Mics. I think people who have been listening to the scene since the Rinse FM days will have attributed this behaviour as just clever marketing, I know I was expecting this album long before it came. This marketing is tried and tested and it works, it was certainly successful for Wiley, exposing himself to a whole host of people who’s entry point to this whole genre was Stormzy. I heard people talking about the tracks everywhere, at work, in bars, in fact I even got into an argument with my barber over who we thought took each round (word of warning kids, don’t start an argument with your barber).

Then the dust seemed to settle slowly, I wasn’t hearing the arguments anymore and Stormzy had disappeared from Social Media altogether, but there was still no album from Wiley? I was hearing that Wiley was all over the capital, recording verses with MC’s from just about everyone involved in the scene, but there was nothing solid as to why. I’ve heard that it was something to do with labels telling Wiley he had to wait before releasing the record on his own label, but again nothing concrete. I saw something on Instagram that it was going to come out 1st of January, but at this point Wiley was posting a story or a tweet once a minute so I was hardly surprised when this date came and went. Finally in June, nearly 5 months had passed since Wiley’s last send for Stormzy, we had an album. Even then it wasn’t easy! It dropped first on Apple Music before making everyone on Spotify wait a little longer. I actually signed up for Apple Music when I already had Spotify because I couldn’t wait one extra day for it to come out, so if anyone knows how to contact Wiley I’d like to invoice him for that pointless subscription fee.

So finally it was here! I was really busy at the time and I don’t like to listen to a record before I can give it my full attention so I actually saw the track-list before I even had a listen, and at first was amazed by the lack of features, where had all those verses that Wiley had been collecting suddenly gone?! Then I saw a tweet from Big Zuu saying that he’d featured on on a track but had not been credited (Track 20 - West London, if you’re wondering) and I thought “Wow, that’s just so Wiley.” A couple of days later though Wiley himself released a list of all the features on the album, and when I saw that I had to listen straight away. There’s some huge huge names on that list, both established legends in the scene like D Double, Jammer and Footsie, to what I think of as the new breed of people that will carry the genre even further like Big Zuu and Capo Lee, and some people who I won’t lie I’ve never heard of. It seems like Wiley is determined to use his last record to make sure that the wheels of this genre are still spinning.

So onto how the record sounds. Normally I like to do a bit of a breakdown of every track, it allows me to really work out any tracks I really enjoy or any that I think could be left out, but I’m not going to be doing that right here. Purely because this record is incredibly long and I really didn’t fancy writing my thoughts when it comes to 22 separate tracks, I’m not exaggerating either it really is 22 tracks long! Obviously the whole thing does have a very Grime feel to it. Just the lengths of the tracks themselves make me think of the old days of Grime. With an average track length of less than 3 minutes it gives the whole thing a really fast paced feeling, comparable to the way that Wiley has always flung bars at us at a million miles an hour, his final album flings tracks at us with comparable speed.

The first listen I felt almost overloaded. With so many features that I did find myself thinking “Was that so and so?” so much that I missed just about every punchline and barely even recognised the productions. So I had to go back a few times and listen all over again, although that’s definitely not a chore! Production wise it’s much as you’d expect, very Grimey and very heavy in the early tracks which leaves me feeling that Wiley really is cementing that flag in the scene before he departs. Don’t make any mistakes at all though because this is not a record in which all tracks sound the same, Wiley keeps even the Grimiest tracks sounding varied by switching up his rhyme flows often and the hooks change between each track. Production wise my favourite track would have to be family which features Flirta D, Footsie and Goldie1. I think the track is produced by Mr Virgo and for me it brings a really fresh sound which can often be quite difficult when producing a genre which is nearly 18 years old now.

Lyrically Wiley comes just as hard as he always has. He comes out swinging on Intro letting us know exactly what he thinks of his role in the scene saying “I’ll be the father bro, you can be the son of it.” As a huge fan of wordplay I also feel like I’ve got to shout out the London scheme in Intro also, which end with a punchline saying “They’ll pull up to the junction, jump out and Clapham.” Had me screwing up my face like I was in 2004 all over again. The bars continue from Wiley as the record goes on, always following the similar theme with Wiley reminding us exactly who we should thank for this whole genre. In terms of features for me it’s Tempa T that absolutely steals the show, probably because I don’t think I’ve heard from him for so long. But having just written that I’m having so many more ideas, J2K is absolutely incredible on Double Dragon and Manga Saint Hilare shines on Amsterdam alongside Breeze, Scratchy and Wiley. Yes you did read that last sentence correctly, it’s basically a Roll Deep reunion on that track.

My only concern with the new album coming out would be that it wouldn’t have any flow. Lately Wiley seems to struggle to focus on one topic, in his interviews with Zeze Millz and Poet for Filthy Fellas I didn’t really know what he was talking about more often than not and I was concerned that lack of cohesiveness would translate into the record. My concerns were unfounded though and, like I’ve said earlier it’s very much a Grime showcase in the early tracks. This does get mixed up as we go continue through though, Rinse for example uses a production that Donae’o once released to give a more UK Funky feel. I also love the final track Press Record, which slows everything right down and moves as far away from Grime as it’s possible to go, but lets us really feel like Wiley is talking to us. I also find it quite emotional because it makes me feel like Wiley is actually serious that this is going to be his last album, and I just don’t even want to begin to imagine this scene without him.

Think what you like of him, and he’s certainly split opinions over the past few months, you simply cannot overstate the impact he’s made. And if you were doubting this statement, this final effort will make sure you rethink that. It’s quite amazing that there are 22 tracks and I genuinely cannot think of a single one that could be taken off this record, a truly sublime effort from the true Godfather. Thank-you Wiley.

Blooming from the Mud Pt. 12 (Bleach/DGM)

He doesn’t come out of his rooms until evening, when hunger drives him from where he’d slipped from meditation into true dreaming.

The 11th Division mess hall is a war zone, full of loud shouts and always one broken bowl away from a food fight. Kanda snatches a clean, unattended bowl and chopsticks from an empty table and heads over to where the food is being dispensed from.

“Kanda!” calls Yumichika from his spot in the hall. “I saved you a seat!” He waves his hand over their table. Aside from Ikkaku snoring next to him, it is completely empty.

“Okay,” says Kanda, eyes going back to the food being offered. Tempura, soba noodles, ramen noodles...

Trapped in that house, cooking soba for lunch, for dinner, for Allen....

He gets the tempura. It’s not as good as when Jerry made it, or old man Zuu Mei before him. It’s the first thing he’s eaten in over a month that doesn’t taste like dust.

“You going to be taking another of the longer missions?” Yumichika asks, eyes fixed on the bright red nail polish that he is carefully checking for chips.

“Probably,” says Kanda. He has... a few more things to get in order before he leaves again.

“Heard you went with the Kuchiki Lieutenant. Want me to set up a duel?”

“With Sojun? No.” says Kanda. Ignoring the fact that the minute Sojun used his Shikai he’d be working on an at best five minute countdown to death, Yumichika was just checking that Sojun hadn’t said anything about Kanda being from the Rukongai.

“He’s annoyingly polite,” Kanda says. “And he thanked me,” he adds, offended.

“Terrible,” says Yumichika, eyes shining. “Oh, by the way...”

He looks like Lavi when he smiles like that.

“A squeaky someone left something for you!” Yumichika snatches another stack of papers from where Ikkaku had been using them as a pillow and waves them at Kanda. “Pretty brave of a 4th Division member to come here,” says Yumichika. “Or maybe not. For me to remember such an unforgivably bland face-- I think he might be the 4th Division member I press ganged into cleaning our bathroom a couple years ago.”

“Who cleans the other bathrooms,” Kanda half asks, half states. At best, ‘our’ bathroom means his, Ikkaku’s, Kenpachi’s, and possibly Yachiru’s. At worst.... Well.

Yumichika’s nose wrinkles.

“Some of the others use cleaning duty as the punishment for sparring losses,” he says. “What a hideous concept. If they want punishment for losing, then they should just die.”

“Sure,” says Kanda, taking the papers from Yumichika and looking over at them. These ones are dated for this week, unlike the previous piles of backlog that Ikkaku had dumped on Kanda. He rifles through them.

Mission Requests, Joint Mission Requests, some completed Mission Reports written in illegible handwriting, Noise Complaint, Notice for the weekly Captain’s Meeting, Notice for the weekly Lieutenant’s Meeting with candy! scrawled in bright red in the corner, Repair Expense Report, Repair Expense Report (Yachiru), Makeup Shop Expense Report...

“Are we allowed to just list anything we buy as an expense?”

“Why not?” says Yumichika. “All the Divisions get the same budget.”

“How big of a budget?”

“The 12th Division sponsors a subordinate research division with theirs.”

“Does Kenpachi need to sign off on these?”

“Ah.” Yumichika reaches towards Ikkaku and rummages around in his robes until he finds something and offers it to Kanda, who takes it gingerly. It’s a pale red jade stamp of two crossed bones beneath a five petaled flower.

“This is Yachiru’s signature,” says Yumichika. “Captain Unohana had it made for her when she joined her Calligraphy Club. Captain Kenpachi just gives any paperwork given to him to Yachiru, who folds it into paper airplanes. Don’t worry about losing the stamp, Yachiru’s got a bunch of them.”

Kanda tucks it into his now empty ration pouch.

“He also got a pen?”

“No idea,” says Yumichika indifferently.

Kanda stares at the paperwork in front of him. Is it giving in if he makes himself a desk? Does the Seireitei have quality wood imports? Well, all of the buildings are made of wood so they should have at least... some sturdy hardwoods that he can use. The Kuchiki’s probably know where to get cherry wood, if all else fails.

“If the pipsqueak comes back with more paperwork, just tell him to dump it in my room,” Kanda says, resigned. Fuck it, he’ll deal with that tomorrow.

Just then, Yumichika shunpoes on top of the table, a full bowl of slightly churning noodles now in his hands.

“Who dared through this thing at me!” He screams at a pitch not unlike a peacock’s early morning screech. He sights his target and throws, drenching most of a table with the hot liquid and sending the broken bowl shards flying everywhere. One of them brings the table down as they throw themselves at their unlucky neighbors, using the unprepared as human shields.

Kanda takes this as his cue to leave, making sure to step up and over Ikkaku’s head on his way out.

It’s remarkably quiet outside of the 11th Division’s compound. Kenpachi’s aura still bathes the roads in his enduring bloodthirst, but the noise and clangour are replaced with the wind whistling off of the white walls and rustle of trees in hidden pathways and courtyards.

It’s almost enough to make him relax.... If someone hadn’t been following him ever since he left the compound.

“What are you waiting for?” Kanda asks impatiently. “It’s late, and I’m alone. What better opportunity could you have?”

“I’m collecting data,” says the shinigami girl. She’s barely an inch taller than Kanda, with short black hair framing a round face and dark green eyes. She offers Kanda a clipboard. “Do you have a moment to fill out a quick survey?”

Kanda takes the clipboard and scans the questions.

You are a shinigami with a child’s body [Y | N]

Are you the product of an experiment? [Y | N]

Do you have a mother? [Y | N]

“Yes, to the first two,” says Kanda. “No to the rest. How many child shinigami are there?”

“Only me, you and Lieutenant Kusajishi Yachiru, currently,” says the girl. “It’s an unfortunately limited sample. I am Number 7 Nemuri, but I will be inducted as a Lieutenant tomorrow, and then I will be Kurotsuchi Nemu, having proved the worth of my existence to my father.”

“Your creator considers himself your father?” Kanda asks, confused. Director Touyi had been very clear on her relation to him being non familial.

“His blood runs through me,” says Nemuri. “Though I do not know if he considers himself as my father or is is merely indifferent to my delusions. I am a flawed product, after all. It is to be expected.”

“Have you already given this survey to Yachiru?” Kanda asks.

“Yes, Lieutenant Kusajishi Yachiru has answered the survey,” says Nemuri. “She responded with yes to questions number one and answered number five with ‘I have Ken-chan! He’s the best... he promised that he was the strongest and we’d stay together forever~’” Her take on Yachiru’s chirpy tone of voice was uncanny. “From that data point I have established a positive correlation between happiness with ‘parental figures’ and ‘long term oaths of loyalty’.”

Kanda’s vision flashes to a beautiful smile in a room full of corpses.

“I’m happy to see you, Yuu.. .But I’ve got to kill you now.” He’d been crying, Kanda could still remember. Smiling and crying and covered in blood. Thanks to the Noah, he could recall all of it as if it were yesterday, Alma’s face never fading.

“My generation failed,” says Kanda. “Loyalty to the people who chained my soul to that body and gave me such a cursed existence.... I served them for ten years, but I can’t imagine feeling anything but hatred.”

He had hoped for their destruction so much that he had turned away from Allen’s own quiet screams in the hope that he might bring the Order down with him.

“You must hate me, then,” says Nemuri. “I hope to become a scientist some day, like my father,” she explains. “I’m to be his assistant in all of his experiments. Father and I... we are much alike.”

“As long as we’re alive...the humans won’t admit they're wrong.”

“I’ve never hated someone... for being any type of scientist,” says Kanda. Johnny, Reever...Komui. “Even human experimentation... I was never the one who cared about that.”

“Yuu... I’m so sorry for what happened.”

“How dare they! I’ll bring this up with Headquarters!”

“I hate people... who see each other as tools,” Kanda admits.

“Your data contradicts with Lieutenant Kusajishi Yachiru?” Nemuri clarifies. Her voice is shaking a bit, and sharp as she tries to ground herself with the survey. “Is her loyalty...

“Her loyalty is returned,” Kanda’s voice cracks and he hates this body. “That’s why... that’s why she and Kenpachi are so happy, I think. Because they made an oath to each other. To stay together....” Kanda searches for a way of conveying this that doesn’t include bringing up his own past. He doesn’t owe Nemuri anything. He didn’t even owe Allen his past, though the stupid beansprout had learned about it anyway.

Better or worse, that he had known what he was doing when he stabbed through Allen to attack Alma?

“Like your zanpaktou,” he says, nodding towards the green hilted katana at her hip.

“It is false,” says Nemuri. “I cannot imprint an asuchi, for I am not human-- I have no true soul.” Nemuri smiles sadly, and gestures at herself. “Even my father would not dare to thwart the law that prohibits the trapping of human souls. Instead, he settled for second best and made me, an artificial soul in an artificial body.

She spreads her arms, the expression on her face fading back into the placid neutrality she had first greeted him with.

“What a piece of bullshit,” snarls Kanda, mood twisting into something ugly. “You’re real enough. Being human--,” he stops, tongue growing heavy. Did he know enough about that to question her choices?

“Are you cold, Yuu?”

“Do you have something that you want?” Kanda demands, keeping his hands still at his side even as he wants to look down, to check that his guts aren’t pouring out in dripping coils as he speaks to this stranger.

“I... what?”

“A wish, a dream... a story that you would tell yourself when everything hurt and all you could see was the dark. Something stupid, something impossible. When your blood spills over the floor and it hurts so bad you can’t move, can’t even open your mouth to beg for it to stop. What do you think of, then?”

“I want to make father proud....”

“No. beyond that.”

Nemuri covers her eyes, shrinking away.

“I would think,” she mumbles into her hands. “Of the fact that I was built without tear ducts, so I could not cry, even though it hurt. I think I would like... to dig a grave for my sisters, and weep in front of that grave. I would like to be able to cry for people. Kanda... is it too much? Can I do that?”

“How would I know,” says Kanda, roughly. “When you want something so badly that you’d shed blood and tears and give your life to hold it for only a moment... isn’t that human enough?”

Nemuri stares at him, arms clutched around herself and eyes wide. Then she reaches out, and takes back her clipboard.

“Thank you for taking my survey,” she says, quietly. “You have given me much to think about.”

“...Yes,” says Kanda. “If you need another shovel when you start digging...” It was as much as he could bear to offer even now, with Kurayami’s promise still fresh in his mind. It felt like meeting Mugen all over again, constantly bleeding on the inside even as he got up to try again, and again.

“I will have to change my survey based on new data,” Nemuri says. He tilts her head to Kanda in a silent acknowledgement, and disappears back towards where she came.

Sephiroth Week || Day 5: Nature

Read the other week prompts on [AO3]

(Of a gentle witch in a flower garden and the things he seeks to discover.)

After their accidental, yet fruitful meeting, Sephiroth made sure to exchange phone numbers. He knew he’d need to meet that cadet again, eventually. The situation was one that would require the guidance of someone with knowledge of it, even if that didn’t come from someone above him in power. (Which was an odd concept, the more he thought about it. Perhaps it was just the way the situation was unusual that bothered him. Regardless, Sephiroth let the thought slip away for the time being.)

His secretive new contact reaches out to him just in time, in an afternoon during which it was brought to his attention a series of apparent problems with the reactor in the Nibel area and that the company was considering sending him out to investigate the issue. The area was full of dangerous beasts, after all. (Dragons, twin brains, zuus and so on.) It wouldn’t do well to send just seconds and technicians. They could save the technicians for reactors closer to Midgar and spare them the dangers of the distant location, while preserving their SOLDIERs from harm at the same time, as they were more than simply confident in Sephiroth’s prowess as a warrior.

(Overconfidence will do nothing but destroy you.)

The message he gets from Cloud simply reads “Meet me near the Goblin’s Bar,” with no reason added to it. It’s almost as if the blond knows saying so little and inviting for more is the way to catch his attention; setting a bait out to fish his curiosity.

When he’s able to, before he knows it, Sephiroth finds himself making his way to Loveless Avenue. He’s quick to see the cadet pretending to guard the area and wastes no time, promptly approaching him. Cloud gives him a salute as soon as he sees him, only dropping it when he’s told to be at ease.

They’re meant to follow protocol, after all, — at least while they’re in this area — so to the public eye and therefore, Shinra to an extend, it can be seen as just an infantryman reporting an issue to someone of superior rank who can deal with said problem.

“Sir, I’ve found the source of that problem,” the blond says, keeping the act just in case someone nearby overhears them.

“Lead me to it.”

And Cloud does as he’s asked, guiding him all the way to the train station. The realization they’re going down to the slums hits Sephiroth rather quickly but he doesn’t ask. In fact, they don’t talk much until they’re sure nobody’s going to overhear anything they say.

It’s always a strange thing, trusting someone he barely knows to show him the way and yet, something about the blond other than the complicated story bounding them together at the moment makes him worth of trust.

“I met someone,” Cloud eventually says, “she sort of dragged me into a church and we had a long talk.”

“That’s where we’re going, then?”

The infantryman nods.

“I thought seeing her could help a little. With the plan.”

Oh yes, the plan. Which they discussed over texts a few times, looking for ideas on how to prevent what could happen in Nibelheim. They’d have to do it without alerting Hojo about their intentions. Refusing the mission wouldn’t do, as the scientist could always order his… pet to be brought back to Midgar and for Sephiroth to go to the labs. But at the same time, going to that town could lead to trouble on pure accident. Cloud had suggested more than once for him to not accept the mission so the blond himself could sneak into the labs and solve their issue himself.

Sephiroth couldn’t help but think it was too risky to be worth it.

Part of the plan involved doing something to keep his mind anchored as well, to prevent him from engaging in reckless actions such as burning a whole town to the ground.

When they finally enter the church they’re headed to, Sephiroth has a feeling he knows what Cloud’s trying to do, while being completely lost on how this will help, if at all.

Just as they enter, a small woman stands from where she was kneeling down near the bright colored flowers that seem to grow in the place. She wears her long brown hair in a braid with a pink ribbon tied to it; her bangs framing her face just like his own do. Completely the opposite of him, she’s dressed in white; a dress that follows her little turn as she moves away from the flowers to approach them.

For a moment, as Sephiroth notices the green eyes, — different yet similar to his own in a way — he almost swears this is a long lost relative of his. He wonders about that.

Why does she feel familiar?

“Oh, you brought a friend!” She says to Cloud, before turning to him. “Hmm… Sephiroth, wasn’t it? Zack talks about you sometimes when he comes to visit.”

“You’re Zack’s girlfriend.” It finally clicks.

“Mhmm. The name’s Aerith.”

Sephiroth is thankful for the information as he couldn’t recall whether her name was Aerith or Aeris. He only knew that Zack seemed to be even more puppy than man whenever he mentioned her — which usually happened at times Sephiroth couldn’t fully pay attention to whatever he was saying, only catching bits of information here and there.

Aerith glances at Cloud for a moment, before the latter nods and leaves to sit by the flowers. Once the blond is away from them, she takes his hand.

“You’re looking for your truth, aren’t you? The place you came from, your family…”

He doesn't recall mentioning the topic with both Zack and Cloud, but nods regardless, with a puzzled expression.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers, “It’s just that I feel as if somebody important to you is really troubled right now. Maybe she’s been for a long while.”

“How… how are you doing this?”

The brunette lets go of his hand, her green gaze drifting away from him.

“Ever since I was young I can… feel the Planet and the bits of it resonating within people, the animals, the flowers… everything.”

Ever since I was young I knew I was different from the others.

Sephiroth takes a step back, a little nauseated by the thought. He doesn’t mean it as an offense against this young woman, but she doesn’t take it as one either, offering a sympathetic smile when she notices.

“It’s… a little scary, isn’t it? Sometimes it scares even me,” she pauses, getting a little sad so suddenly, “The first thing I thought when I saw you just now was that it must be sad… losing someone dear to you while trying to find out about yourself.” Sephiroth opens his mouth to say something, but she continues before he can say it. “But! It’s alright to grieve and maybe it’s okay to be so different. You get… hm, more to learn from other people or more things to talk about.”

He looks past her shoulder to where Cloud has given up on waiting them sitting by the flowers, now lying on the floor like a lazy cat out in a garden during a summer day. Sephiroth thinks about all the things he doesn’t know about this short, yet very noticeable cadet, about Zack (Why does your girlfriend look like she’s related to me?) and about the past; the things that happened before he even came alive.

So much yet to learn, his curiosity is tickled by such a thought.

“Maybe you have a point.”

Aerith nods at that with an expression that reminds him so much of Genesis that it’s almost painful; that one look of “Of course I’m right” that never failed even once at making Sephiroth either roll his eyes or smile… or both.

Wordlessly, she turns away from him to join Cloud, leaving him to follow after her; being unable not to wonder whether or not Zack is aware of those things. Once they’re all properly seated by the flower bed — the presence of which seems like a puzzle, given that, unless it’s a potted plant kept above the plate, plants aren’t meant to survive for long in the environment of Midgar — Aerith exchanges a look with the blond and a silent agreement, before talking again.

“I think what we’re here for is to make it clear how Cloud traveled through time.”

It’s a general agreement between the three of them. The infantryman urges her to explain instead of having him do it. Sephiroth wonders about how complicated the matter of it might be.

“In my family,” she says, “the women aren’t only born being able to ‘listen’ to the Planet. We’re also born with the ability to perform a forbidden magic… which Cloud’s a victim of.”

“So, as far as I understand, you can travel through time?”

“No, no, silly.” She chuckles and Sephiroth basks in the audacity she has, like a child playing with fireworks; not knowing about the potential danger of it and fearless in such ignorance. He catches Cloud snorting at it in an attempt to disguise laughter.

You just called the general of the most important corporation in the world ‘silly’.

(Well played!)

“We can only send back other people, because that comes at a heavy price: You have to die to be sent.”

And Cloud died, he thinks and gets the picture, then.

“But if you’re not sending yourself back, how would you know that you sent someone else?”

“I ‘smell’ of afterlife, apparently,” Cloud says and goes back into lying on the ground like a tired tabby cat.

Aerith laughs at that, the sound of it a timeless thing that somehow has Sephiroth understanding a little more the... time mage nature she claims to have — a nature he doesn’t question after they talked away from the blond for that one moment. “You smell fine to me,” he teases the cadet, who simply blushes and curls into a ball.

He looks like a fusion of a chocobo with a hedgehog. It’s quite… adorable, Sephiroth thinks.

It only makes Aerith’s effort to catch her breath more difficult after laughing so much at such antics.

“Well, it’s not literally, thankfully,” she giggles and picks up a flower, only to put it on Cloud’s hair, “but here, now you can smell just like a flower.”

At that, Sephiroth understands a little what Cloud might’ve been trying to do when bringing him to such a place and such a company; he needs to avoid falling into despair, needs to stay on a bright path so his mind and his spirit become harder to break or to be influenced in the case they need to… face their monster together.

It also has him thinking about… something else that has him concerned and lingering behind for a moment longer to ask Aerith something before they return to the headquarters.

She had mentioned Cloud told her about their strange predicament, after all.

“I know you mentioned it’s a forbidden magic, but in the case we fail, in the case he dies again…” Sephiroth hesitates “Could it be repeated?”

She nods. “His mind and body would only remember his last death and the events before it, but yes.” Then, playfully she suggests “Would you like me to do it?”

It sounds as if he’s about to make a deal with Hel herself.

“Yes… unless there are any drawbacks,” he agrees to it anyway.

“Hm, there’s one. Say, if we were to repeat this enough times, the Planet would remember and it wouldn’t take it kindly against any of us.”

“Meaning?”

“It could become worse. He could forget he’s ever time traveled, for one. Something different could happen and you’d fail anyway, even if he lives. I could lose the power to do it and never know about it. We could never meet, and so on.” Aerith sighs at the prospect. “Would you still want me to do it?”

His simple nod seals the deal as a weird sensation courses through him. Not even the risks can shake his resolve of fighting such a terrible fate. And yet, he can’t free himself from the feeling he already agreed to such a deal before.

Just as he leaves, Aerith can sense it in the echo of him that his spirit leaves behind. But she thinks better of it than following Sephiroth to confirm the truth.

By the means of yesterday's individual handshake event,

I, Saito Chiharu, has officially ended all my activities in regards to Nogizaka46.

Thank you so much for these 7 years.

I really felt everyone's love from yesterday's individual handshake event.

For thinking about me and preparing different kinds of things,

Each filled with everyone's thoughts and affection.

All I can do is to be thankful to everyone,

It must've been really difficult,

When it was time for a food break, in the dressing room, all of Morning Musume '17 were doing <3 lines to make your heart pound <3 For Maria, it was Kaedy's line that made my heart pound the most <3 (Now, I thought that I would write what Kaedy said * But, I forgot :p Do you want to know?? Should I ask Kaedy tomorrow? What should I doooo :))

Cultural Immersion: How Learning 20 Basic Phrases Transformed My Travel Experience

For ages I’ve recognised, at least in theory, that learning even just a small handful sentences in a new language can take you a long way on a holiday, and give you a unique experience of cultural immersion. I really enjoyed reading about Fluent in 3 Months founder Benny Lewis’s experience getting by with limited Turkish at a barber shop in Istanbul. But it wasn’t until a recent trip to Burma with my friend that I got to experience firsthand how powerful this can be.

The 20 Phrases I Learned to Prepare for My Trip

Before the trip, I took only two hours of Burmese lessons with Cherry, an excellent Burmese tutor on italki. She taught me the following basic phrases:

Hello (with the polite particles)

Elder/younger sister, elder/younger brother (polite way to address people)

How are you? I’m fine

Excuse me

Sorry

Thank you (formal and informal)

You’re welcome

Beautiful

Good

My name is Holly. This is [my friend] Ashley.

Goodbye (formal and informal)

Can you speak English? Yes, I can speak it/No, I can’t.

Do you understand? Yes, I understand/No, I don’t understand.

Give me this please [pointing to a menu item]

How much does it cost?

Numbers from 1 to 99.

Vegetarian-related phrases: I’m vegetarian. I don’t eat meat or fish. Is it vegetarian? Please make it vegetarian. Could you give me this but vegetarian?

I practised pronunciation with my teacher over and over during my two lessons. Once I was sure I was saying the words correctly, I made up a transliteration system to help me remember the pronunciation - reading Burmese was definitely not part of this micro mission! - and I put all the words onto flash cards on my phone. I practised the cards on the long flight to Asia.

Arriving in Burma

When my friend Ashley and I arrived in Mandalay, the first thing we did was hop on the bus for a five-hour ride to Bagan (pronounced “b’gan). We arrived in Bagan just in time to get to bed and wake up at 5:30 a.m. to watch the famous sunrise over the old town. And what a beautiful sunrise it was! We were short on time, only having about 52 hours in Burma, so after a morning spent touring the temples of old Bagan, it was back on the bus for the five-hour trip back to Mandalay.

Culturally Immersed: Using My New Phrases

As it would turn out, that bus trip ended up being the most memorable part of my visit. The bus stopped for 20 minutes at a small outdoor rest stop in a really rural area. We had been in Burma 24 hours by this point but I had barely had a chance to use the Burmese I had learned, except for “hello”, “goodbye”, “thank you” and “how much?” at restaurants and such. But at the rest stop, when I got out to stretch my legs, I saw a lady selling some grilled meat near our bus. I wanted to take a picture but I didn’t want to be rude by doing it without asking. But I hadn’t learned the phrase “May I take a photo?” I thought back to my phrase list, and I remembered the verb "can”, and the yes/no question particle, from the phrase “Can you speak English?” So I mustered up my courage, approached the lady, and said in Burmese, “Excuse me, elder sister”, then pointed to my camera and asked "Can I?” She nodded. Success!

“Kaung dè (good)!!!"

I took a picture and said “thank you”, then gestured to her tray of meat said apologetically, "I'm vegetarian." Another lady selling some flat cakes heard me. She came over and pointed to her tray, saying "Vegetarian!" So I bought one and tried it, and said "Good!" in Burmese. [caption id="attachment_20755" align="aligncenter" width="768"] “Kaung dè (good)!!!"[/caption] She pointed at the cakes again and said another word that I didn't know, so I said "Sorry, I don't understand". She then said, “Name," followed by the word again. I recognised the word “name” from the phrase “My name is Holly” that I had already learned. "Ohhh, name!" I replied. She was telling me the name of the food! (Side note: I wish I remember what the name was. It was yummy, and googling the description of the food has been unsuccessful.)

Getting Taught New Vocabulary

I was curious about what kind of meat the first lady was selling. I hadn’t learned how to say “What is that?” but I had just been reminded that I knew the Burmese word for “name”, so I just pointed to her tray and said "Name?" She told me what kind of meat it was, but of course I didn't understand the word. An English-speaking Burmese man was passing by and told me it was rabbit. I wanted to hear the name again in Burmese. I knew how to say “in [language]” since I had learned the phase “Can you speak [in] English?” So I said, “In Burmese…?” and the lady repeated the word for rabbit (which of course I already forget! But that’s slightly easier to look up.) Another lady heard us talking and came over, so now there were three ladies standing around me. I was gaining an audience with my clumsy attempts to speak Burmese. It encouraged me to keep going. I said, "My name is Holly," then looked questioningly at the lady selling the rabbit (because I didn't know how to ask "What is your name?”). She said her name, as did the other two women.

Learning How to Tell Jokes in Burmese

I was running out of things to say because I had learned so little. But I suddenly realised I could say my age. I couldn’t say "years old", but I did know the numbers up to 99, so I pointed to myself and said "Thirty-five." They understood. The lady selling the rabbit pointed to herself and said “Fifty-five.” She really didn’t look that age, so I replied "Fifty-five! Beautiful!" and she smiled. My Burmese teacher taught me that smiling is a common substitute for words in Burma. People often smile to say hello or thank you. The lady then pointed to the woman standing closest to me, who looked about my age, and said "Sixty!" with a perfect deadpan expression, before she broke it with a laugh. There’s no way the woman next to me was sixty. The lady selling the rabbit was teasing her! And she wasn’t done yet. She then pointed to the other girl, who couldn't have been older than twenty, and said "Eighty!", again with that mock-serious expression, and we all shared a hearty laugh at that. I wished that there had been a child around so I could have pointed and said, “Ninety??” to keep the joke going! Our 20-minute pit stop was almost over, but I still had a couple minutes left. The lady selling the vegetarian cakes said "[something something] three." I couldn’t tell what she was referring to, so I replied, “I’m sorry, I don’t understand.” She mimed rocking a baby, and I knew she was telling me she had three kids. "Oh! I understand!" I replied. I didn’t get a chance to tell her how many kids I have (and I hadn’t learned the word for “zero” anyway :) ), because suddenly it was time to get back on the bus. I had just enough time to say "Thank you, goodbye!" and wave at my new friends before boarding the bus. We kept waving to each other through the window as the bus pulled away.

A Magical Experience

It’s hard to express what a magical experience it was to have this short conversation with such a friendly group of Burmese women. I kept thinking back to it with a smile over the next several days as Ashley and I made our way back to Thailand for the rest of our trip. I ended up using nearly every one of the few phrases I had learned, and it improved the trip more than I ever would’ve expected. After that experience, I made a promise to myself to never travel to another country again without learning at least a few sentences in the local language. I want to make the most out of my trips, and that doesn’t just mean seeing the sights. It also (or rather, especially) means interacting and connecting with the people who live there, even if only briefly. In other words, real cultural immersion.
