After seeing the last ask, I need you to know your writing has an impact. Your characterisations are so interesting that whenever I read someone else’s work, I search for hints of your characters (yes urs, fuck jkr) the way you write longing/angst sticks with me and I mull over it quite a bit. This is weird to admit but I have this dread about getting any older than I am but reading over how your characters adore those changes (greying hair etc) made me fall in love with the way THEY love. I see ageing with a new lens, I even see love through new eyes because the bond between ur characters make me go Shit If Someone Can Write Love Like This It Has To Be Out There. I told my non reader friend how I wanted a throat tattoo (the moth) and the song DYH is my favourite now and I can’t listen to it without thinking of your work and it makes me feel all the feelings jchdjdjejsb - don’t even get me started on my urge to get some skates

What I’m saying is don’t listen to the gremlins in your brain. Your work is wonderful and it sticks with us in little ways even if people don’t voice it. You’re doing wonderful with your new work I’m certain of it. We love you and your writing (:

At first glance, what stands out most about your OC's appearance? What's their distinguishing feature?

Firstly, thank you to the groupchat for helping me with this one, because much like quizzes where we’re asked to describe ourselves, I require outside confirmation. Jo’s eyes are probably the first thing people would notice about her, they’re warm brown against her complexion, which in seasons with more sun has a bit of a tan to it. If she’s got her hair down I’d say that first, but usually for work it’s up/held back in some way.

What jewelry does your OC wear? Does it have any meaning?

When she’s not working, Clara always wears a small gold cross that she’s had since she was quite young, and a pearl ring given to her by her parents that she’s had about that long as well. As the only girl in the family, she’s a little spoiled (affectionate), and this was a birthday gift that her parents saved for that they hoped she’d wear as a young woman, and she does. Often she’ll wear earrings as well, generally small studs that go with a lot of outfits, if she’s going out or going to church. Clara is a big accessories person, and she trends towards delicate pieces. and often floral motifs

Does your OC have a favorite article of clothing or accessory? What is it? What's the meaning behind it? Do they wear it all the time or do they wear it sparingly to keep it safe?

Her wardrobe is something Clara puts a lot of thought into, and she really loves it? She loves the dresses she owns (and that’s not a lot, of course), and the accessories she uses to switch up her simpler looks. I would probably say her favorites are her printed scarves, usually cotton, a rare few in silk. She also has a shawl given to her by her aunt, with a lot of embroidery and a fringe, and she wears it for special occasions and to church.

How does your OC move? How does their clothing help or hinder their range of motion? Are they flexible, coordinated, clumsy?

Her movements are...assured. She’s put-together at work, confident in the kitchen. In private she’s a little looser, around people she’s more comfortable with. Wardrobe-wise I would say Frankie usually goes for...elegant comfort? For work, she needs to be able to sit comfortably in her clothes, and for home she needs to be able to move about. But she doesn’t want to sacrifice feeling put-together for those purposes either. It translates to more workaday fabrics in simple cuts, nothing too tight or restrictive.

Sorry it's been such a long wait! I got busy with my pirate fic, which unexpectedly consumed my brain, and the advent calendar fics and the holiday exchange fic and now I'm writing TWO fics for the Reverse Big Bang which will come out in March/April but I have definitely NOT forgotten about the coffee shop au!!!

12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?

Allow me to go on a quick tangent before I answer this. Before an update, which my firm implemented in 2016, Adobe's default highlighting colour used to be bright yellow for PDFs - after the update it switched to orange, and just the other day I gently nudged junior team members I am managing to please not send me documents highlighted in this ugly orange wherever possible. Which is to say, I am a creature of habit and a very stubborn one at that. I have been thinking about this ask for five days, telling myself there has to be something I've grown to like, but alas, I am afraid the answer is no 😆 I will read a trope I am not a fan of if there are enough mitigating factors (I'm bored, I trust the author, premise is very interesting) but it rarely changes my view on the trope itself.

23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?

I have quite a few! One is definitely a truth serum AU which would fit 00Q nicely (as I rambled about it here) - the way people rationalize things, what they tell (and choose not to tell) themselves and others and what can and cannot be voiced are fascinating topics to me--just all the ways we hide from and confront the truth--as are situations that force people's hands a little so I think this would be a lot of fun!

Ahhh I wish I had things to ask that would be rewarding, but just wanted to say that I love your writing and that reading your work has made me a better writer in my own academic work. 4 & 5: would your muse kill someone if it meant saving another life? could your muse cut ties with a loved one for the greater good? (still accepting)

OKAY, so the answer here is highly dependent on a number of variables and like whether this is a hypothetical situation or like a moral one but...in a word...YES. So, Ariel is definitely someone who values life on every level- I mean, she literally is the first merperson who broke the rule of contact being forbidden against the merworld and the human world to save Eric- so she'd never kill someone in the way Gaston went after the Beast, because of a perceived threat or them being societally condemned. That being said, I fully believe she would've killed Ursula if Eric didn't. The rage that took over her body when she realizes what happens in the climax of the film leads her to physically throw herself at Ursula- who now has all the powers of the ocean on her side, while Ariel is still relatively mortal. She also yanks Ursula back by her hair, forcing her to kill Flotsam and Jetsam. It's the impulsive side of Ariel that's lead by her emotions, but if someone she loved lost their lives at the hands of someone else or if someone else was intentionally evil to cause corruption to another living being's life, Ariel would definitely believe in an eye for an eye. Which might seem hypocritical because she's trying to get Triton to see that's not a good way to be when it comes to viewing humans but the difference is Triton would be against an entire race or species, whereas with Ariel, she's cool with everyone until they cause destruction to her or her loved ones and then she'll be after that one person.

Honestly, Ariel would rather love from a distance safely than having a toxic relationship with someone that impedes her ability to get along with them. I think that's the whole thing with Triton we see in the finale. I also dabbled with this idea in the tags to this post and I'd love to further develop it because Ariel's so fiercely loyal, that I think it'd be an intriguing thing to see how something like that would play out. It'd challenge her, to say that least.

A snack to nibble on during desk time tomorrow - It seems to me that ever pairing that I write exists in an historical moment, but also gravitates to another historical point. What do you think Jo and Joe's other historical place is, and why do you think that is? (I have a theory about both but I want to hear your thoughts first.)

I can't pinpoint another historical moment exactly, but I'd say probably around the 1880s to 1900s. In Pennsylvania.

My understandings of both Jo and Joe are rooted in......the idea that in this world (the 19th century, which @tortoisesshells so unforgettably described as "just one big orphan-factory," specifically of a certain economic status and other variables), you're not special, this world doesn't care (and in Joe's case this world involves backbreaking soul-crushing manual labor, which, of course, is a through-line well past those decades) but also that to someone this person can be everything.

I am also having the thought that I write them in the midst of all these industrial-era disasters (Man-made!! Being at the mercy of manmade forces and greed and also the laws of nature) from the standpoint of ...deindustrialization and my own memories and I think that's why it's the disaster AU that I can't help but keep as a cornerstone, because it exists across time

Without making that first move, even as nervewracking as it might be, how are you ever expected to achieve the goal of writing with someone?
