Essek is a hard to read individual but even the most oblivious of people could tell something is off. Strange. You tilt your head pressing your lips together.

“Is everything alright? You seem a bit out of it if I’m honest.” Essek’s eyes fall to the floor in front of him trying to find the correct words to answer your question; unusual for someone usually so quick with words. You take a few steps closer to him and take his hand in yours giving it a squeeze letting him know you’re there as you wait for his reply.

“I… I am unsure how to phrase this correctly nor in an appropriate way.” He speaks caught in his own mind still. His eyes are searching still focussed on the ground and your entwined hands. You place your free hand on his shoulder, the gesture pulling him out of his head and instead focus on you.

“Try me.”

“I-. This day- These last few… weeks, have been absolute chaos. With everything going on I have not had a moment of peace in a long time.” Essek’s shoulders drop and his feet touch the ground with a soft tap muted by the mossy floor. You pity him. So young and so much pressure, people depending on him. No one should have to deal with all of that alone.

“I’ve always found diving into my work head first ignoring the world contained the chaos and turned it into order instead, something I could control but now I cannot even read a single sentence, transcribe a single equation or confront a single person without feeling like my mind is about to explode.” A weight lifts by the mere vocalising of the words, tension dropping from Essek’s physique as it does from his mind.

“I didn’t know who else to turn to. For some reason, you always have an air of calmness, around you. Whenever we are in the same space, you radiate peace. It’s strange to admit but I think even only spending but moments in your presence now has done more than any and everything I have tried to achieve even a semblance of rest.” You’re not used to Essek being so open and upfront with anyone but you’re glad for it. Knowing you can confide in someone and trust them is one thing. Actually doing so, something else entirely.

“Thank you for your time and once more my sincere apologies for scaring you. I will leave you to your business once more.” Essek is about to pull his hand from yours taking a step back but you don’t let go and step with.

“When’s the last time you’ve taken a break, Shadowhand?” You’re sure you already know the answer or have enough of an idea to estimate but you ask nonetheless. Essek thinks for a moment and frowns.

“I can’t recall.”

“There’s your problem then. You’re stressed, overworked and in desperate need of a break. Come on. I have an idea.” You lightly tug at his hand pulling him along to the base of the tree and sit him down. You take one of the garden scissors and begin cutting some flowers, branches and other things and collect them in a wicker basket as Essek watches you move from planter to planter and pots making sure to leave enough behind and take only what the plants themselves allow you to take.

It might seem a little strange to some, as you’re standing there, a nonverbal conversation with plant life. Some might think you’re crazy but you only acknowledge life in all forms and while you surely could wave your hand and restore what you took, there’s beauty in the natural order of things as your Firbolg friend might agree.

Essek watches you go in awe, studying your every action with an admiration. Before, as he admitted, there had been the radiating calmness from you that could affect those around you but watching you interact, for the lack of a better word, with the greenery, gave that a whole new meaning. Serenity. You are serenity itself.

You take the wicker basket, now filled with flowers of every colour, branches of green and brown of varying lengths, set it down at the base of the tree taking a seat next to Essek.

“What’s this for?” Essek picks up a yellow flower spinning it between his fingers.

“This,” You refer to the basket and the flower held between his fingers. “is how I clear my mind when the pressure of the world becomes too much to handle.” You take a couple of the branches, check the lengths and start twisting and weaving them together adding flowers into the coil as you go.

“This is how you keep the chaos at bay?” Essek questions watching your fingers work braiding together the delicate material.

“People often assume peace is the absence of chaos but it’s not. Nor is order. If you build a dam the pressure of the water will continue building as long as the water flows. You can’t stop it. You can’t prevent it. You can however shape it in such ways you gain more from it than it from you. It can be found in the simplest of things.” You weave in some deep red roses, your pride as the Xhorassian environment is not kind enough for them to survive.

“Whenever the world comes crashing down and I wish the ground would swallow me whole I find a place to sit down and let myself be consumed by my surroundings. Sometimes I just sit doing nothing at all. Other times I draw, or sing or write, and when I’m lucky enough to find just the right place, I’ll make as many of these as it takes me to return to my peace.” You come to the end twisting the final branches to complete the final circle shape, inspecting your work and adjusting as necessary until you deem it truly completed.

“Whenever I use the chaos to create, little by little serenity comes along and I try to bring that feeling along, passing it on to those around me, because gods know, they can use it.” The both of you smile and with a last adjustment of a flower you place the flower crown on Essek’s head.

Confusion, happiness, delight, peace. All emotions running through Essek’s brain throughout this conversation enhanced the moment you place the ornament of braided and woven flowers onto his head, as light as a feather. Who knew something so small and… insignificant could mean so much, do so much?

“Why don’t you try it for yourself? See if this works for you? Or perhaps if not, it might give you inspiration to find something that will.” Essek nods taking the red crown off his head and inspecting it closer. While he certainly has an eye for intricate patterns and structures the construction of such a thing as a simple flower crown goes far beyond him and instead just leaves him completely oblivious and confused.

Seeing Essek trying to figure out the collective of braided flowers and branches might have been one of the funniest things you’ve seen from the man. The intricacies of Dunamis and the most difficult of equations or studies prove next to no problem for the wizard, but a flower crown manages to break him? How could that not be funny. You laugh even though you tried to fight it and Essek sends you a playful glare.

“Since you seem to find this so funny perhaps I should teach you the many complexities of advanced Dunamis? As a thank you of course.” You can see the hints of a smile.

“However much I’d love that, for the sake of both of our peace and sanities, I’d hold off on that for now. We’ll start with something much simpler. Like a daisy chain.” You begin pulling out a pile of white flowers and putting them next to the basket.

“This is how you start…” You begin explaining how to loop the stem of the flower around the one that came before it, the closer together, the denser the chain will become.

While Essek struggles at first, your explanation and guiding hands and pointers as he works result in a decent looking daisy chain. You slowly work your way up to more difficult flowers and eventually the branches, spending the next several hours going through the motions, Essek’s troubles long since forgotten. This may have been the first time but won’t be the last time both of you find your serenity and comfort in colourful soft petals.

xiii. what is their go-to for making a partner feel loved?

— this is something that's actually incredibly difficult for her; the enormity of it is something that nothing feels adequate to express. while she's very physically demonstrative, one of her greatest fears — particularly after he's gone — is that she never expressed it the right way, that he never understood, not really. she desperately hopes he does. she tells him, a thousand times, she is sorry for the way she is, even knowing that he loves her for it, even knowing that he knows what he chose. ( he did, of course, he tells her as much, but it still haunts her ).

she tries to makes him feel loved by what makes her feel loved; making sure he knows she sees him, understands him, accepts him completely and unconditionally. he doesn't need to be anyone else for her; he doesn't need to prove anything to her. she shows him she loves him by letting him simply be, by proving with time that she isn’t going anywhere, that she’s all in.

she shows him love the only ways she knows how. she's most comfortable expressing herself with her body, that she can give him, that she can do and do well ( sexually, yes, of course, but perhaps more pertinently — neither of them have an uncomplicated relationship or history with sex, elaborated on below under xv — with nonsexual signs of affection — running her thumb over his, nuzzling him when she comes up behind him, pressing her lips to his neck ). she’s always touching him if she’s near him. she’s extremely affectionate, both physically and verbally, especially in the mornings and at night when they’re lying limbs-twined.

the simplest answer is, however, synonymous with the answer to xv below; she expresses her love through her trust and willingness to render herself wholly vulnerable. she expresses it through quiet, subtle intimacies that might not be immediately evident to anyone who doesn’t know her ( it’s been stated many times before, but to lyra, the use of a first name and familiar language is the greatest sign of intimacy she can verbally give — her enemies are darling, her husband is john ). “hi, john” is her “i love you;” “i’m so glad it’s you” is her “i love you.”

xiv. what makes them feel loved? would they build up the courage to ask for it?

— the small efforts he makes to meet her at her level. when he says “you love me.” when he manages to drag his ass out of bed for her in the morning to watch the sunrise even though they’re on two hours and he needs his beauty sleep. she doesn't expect accommodation. she doesn't expect anything. one of her most prevailing thoughts early in their relationship is that it would have been enough for him to simply see and understand her; she would not have asked him not to hate her, she does not ask him not to forsake her, but he chose not to. he gave her acceptance. he gave her love. she would never in a thousand years ask for it.

for john, it’s that she lights up when she's around him — is truly simply that happy just to see him and be near him without needing or expecting anything from him, which isn’t something he’s necessarily had in his life from figures who aren’t obligated either by familial bonds or being his subordinates. she could not disguise it even if she wished. he will always make her flush. he will always make her stomach drop and her teeth flash and her eyes gleam. it is simply the way it is: it is incredibly fortunate they are not seen together by anyone outside of the project, because they would have known immediately. ( they do know immediately, when the time comes, before the end of everything ).

xv. what, for them, constitutes a level of intimacy that they would only rarely share with someone? this can be physical, emotional, etc.

— vulnerability, both emotional and physical.* quite literally, he is the only partner she's ever had that she has slept with, excepting some of her earliest girlfriends, generally bunkmates at school ( “i have never slept with a man in all my life!” is a favored gag of hers ). he is also the only partner with whom she hasn't kept her shoes or knives or some means of defense on her person ( john would argue the post-coital teeth and scratch marks he permanently wears make her true defenselessness sat any given time debatable, but it's the thought that counts! ).

( * for the sake of simplicity, this excludes all intimacy in relation to the project; while it’s obviously a major part of their relationship and a shared cause/belief system that deepens their bond, it’s complicated by the fact she would have joined the project and undergone those processes with or without him, whether or not they were lovers )

physical intimacy is, at first glance, something that is decisively not something only rarely shared, given that they both have hundreds of past sexual partners; they both have a complicated past with sex and their own respective baggage. john obviously has a history of self-medication and addiction that’s bound up with his demons and self-loathing; for lyra it's never been a particular vice — she has absolutely also used it to self-medicate in the past, usually as a way to blow off steam when her blood is running hot in a potentially more lethal direction, but it’s never been an instrument of self-destruction — an d is instead primarily is burdened with the fact that she used her sexuality to seduce targets; it's something she weaponized and exploited, so there are always going to be certain situations or circumstances she dislikes seeing john in ( she's reluctant to the prospect of restraining or binding him, for example, since she would use restraints on men she seduced with the intention of intimidating or killing them ). they both have associations they don't want to spill over onto the other.

having said that, the fact of that allows them a type of intimacy that might not be immediately evident to anyone else; she makes sure he knows he doesn't have to fuck her to hold her, he doesn't need to use his body to have that familiarity with her ( given that this is previously unexplored territory for the both of them, her saying so goes over about as well as can be expected — pardon him, he didn’t realize sex with him was such a fucking chore, sorry he is so sexually revolting, don’t do him any favors! — but they get there ).

sex is obviously still a big part of their relationship, and not one that john particularly feels the need to repent, since they’re married in all but name almost immediately and are married in fact within six weeks and otherwise has little difficulty john-justifying ( johnstifying, if you will ) it to himself ( she’s been entrusted to me, i’m bringing her closer to the project, she’s meant for me anyway, god brought her to me, this isn’t lust, she said so herself, this is a sanctioned union ), and she immediately casts off any notions of seducing or manipulating him as means of insinuating herself into the project’s protection ( it’s for this reason she stalls joining; she intends to right away, she believes joseph and desperately wants to believe that this is the reason and purpose for everything in her life up to this point, done both by and to her, but she flatly refuses until she can prove her complete commitment and good faith upfront, an opportunity afforded to her by the camera crew’s fortuitous arrival ) — this is also why she cuts off their first encounter and flees the ranch. she will never use her sexuality against him. in that sense, sex as a form of intimacy is reserved for each other.

( this is, in fact, how she knows she loves him; for all of her extensive sexual history, she has never actually wanted someone — not just release with them, not just a physical attraction to them — she is in fact unsettled on whether or not she is attracted to john physically; he's the most beautiful creature alive to her, but that's because he's him, she loves his nose because it's his nose, she loves his eyes because they're his eyes, his skin because it’s his skin — but actually him. she knew she had to have him. )

xvi. if they had the ability to just spend free time with their partner, what would they do? would they go out or stay inside?

— stay in ( not necessarily literally within the confines of their home, but within their own space ). lyra will probably coax him outside at some point because she doesn't feel right if she's indoors all day, regardless of the weather — no, the first seven years of the collapse are not looking well for her, thank you — but they won't necessarily stray from each other's companionship. if it's a day off, joseph is probably giving them space ( this is also his day off from their shared existence, how wonderful to be able to attend to the rest of the flock without worrying about what problems they're causing on purpose ), so while they'll occasionally have the company of one of their family members, it's more likely to simply be the two of them, possibly with the company of some of their closest inner-circle ( shaggy, holly, shaggy’s brother matthew, a few of their select chosen who are assigned to the ranch ) in the evening if lyra decides she wants a bonfire. otherwise, they take full advantage of their ability to absolutely nothing but laze around and talk and make love.

xvii. under what circumstances would they want to be left alone by their partner?

— this almost never happens, since they’re more inclined towards separation anxiety than a need for space, but lyra is the most likely to want it when she needs to sort out her mental state or let her fuse burn down ( like the time she locked herself in the shower to cry for an hour because he loved her or if they’re in an especially heated argument and she needs to clear her head before she says or does something she’ll regret). she rarely does so, however; she’s aware that from his perspective her walking out on him, no matter how temporary or how rationally he knows she’s coming back, exacerbates his angst and triggers his insecurities.

NaNoWriMo #8: Radical Honesty

Honesty. It’s for schmucks, am I right?

HONESTLY, I was going to write something completely different today, and then I got a phone call which completely sidetracked those plans and now I’m going to use that call as a basis for today’s post.

I have friends that put a tremendous amount of importance on honesty. One says they do not lie, ever, and for the most part I believe them. It’s been helpful in certain instances when my anxiety would usually flare up to reassure myself ‘they wouldn’t lie about that’. It doesn’t stop all my anxieties about that particular person, but the brief relief I get is not so much about the fact they always tell the factual truth so much as an honesty in communication.

The concept of radical honesty is frankly, terrifying. Everything about me, from my temperament to my culture to how I was raised as a girl, to my emotionally abusive household, is about deception. Concealing, putting on a face, empty words, you name it. I became adept at lying, sussing out what things I said that would equal less hurt for me, and lying even more. Sometimes, I’ll lie even when I don’t need to. I know this is a coping mechanism that a lot of abuse survivors have, but it doesn’t mean I don’t feel bad about it a lot. I had a specific paranoia for a number of years, that has faded a bit by now, that I just manipulate the people around me based on the information I share or withhold and was a terrible person who didn’t know or learn how to interface with others normally and would never be able to.

I have trouble realizing how I feel bad sometimes because I’ve got a weak internal voice. I do a nightly diary recording, and I go by candid honesty in those recordings. I’ll say every little thing. It’s not very flattering. But sometimes it takes admitting petty things to come to terms with the feeling and understand yourself a little better. I think we deceive ourselves more than anything else sometimes. We think a thought - maybe it’s petty jealousy, or selfishness, and because we (theoretically) have our own sense of morals/ethics/what have you, we immediately discard the thought and say that we shouldn’t be having that thought, or don’t deserve to have that thought. And then you end up with feeling crummy, but refusing to admit why or that you know why, or maybe even subconsciously burying it so deep you don’t consciously realize why. But that’s the thing. Feelings are feelings. We can’t help our feelings. There’s no such thing as an unfair feeling. We can’t help the way that we feel and I think we too readily push down thoughts that feel petty or negative and then grudges fester, and communication dies. But in order to communicate with others, and ourselves, we owe it to hear those feelings out, confront them, and then take action. We are not judged on our feelings, but how we act on them.

So yeah. Despite it all, I feel like I’m very honest and truthful with myself. Which doesn’t sound super novel or amazing, I’m sure, but given my history, I’m amazed, and proud that I’ve gotten this far. And in a related vein, it’s possible to be telling the truth as far as you understand it to be - but to be deceiving yourself, a lot. (Take the time to try and understand yourself and why you feel the way you do. Dissect it down to the simplest emotions and events. It’s good for you.)

Now, to get to my point FIVE PARAGRAPHS in, when somebody tells you that you’ve hurt their feelings - it is incredibly difficult. At least it is for me. It’s a vulnerability that comes with sharing that you’re hurt, the fears of confrontation that I know at least I have in droves, and the softest, rawest part of that is you’re also putting forth the hope that the other person understands, and might want to change, or acknowledge it, because they care. Whoof, that’s scary. It takes less effort to just swallow the feeling or dismiss it than it does to confront both the other person, and your own feelings. I think to a lot of people, when they’re told they hurt somebody, the initial gut reaction is denial or defensiveness, because they want to think that they wouldn’t have done that because they didn’t want to, or because they don’t want to feel responsible for that vulnerability.

My mother called just earlier - I need to figure out the entire damn mess that is re-registering my car in this state, and they’ve lost the title and can’t find it, and the car’s still not even in my name, and it’s just a whole fucking mess. I told her what information I had gotten from the DMV. She expressed skepticism three times before she said “I’ll just ask your brother”. MY GOD! Why do I say anything? The answer is I don’t fucking know, because this has happened literally every single time I try to tell her something she needs to know, my entire life. And I got frustrated, and I told her I didn’t know why she wanted me to figure out specifics, if she wasn’t going to listen to my answer because she didn’t like it. And I spelled out, calmly, as clearly as I could, that her words and actions hurt me because I constantly feel trivialized. That my words are never taken seriously, that I know we’re a team in this and ON the same side as family, but that she hurts me so often when she calls my efforts useless (only to often come to the same conclusion, from my brother weeks later). And I likened it to what my father does, because he does the same thing to her all the time, and I told her she was doing the same thing to me. A hurtful legacy. I even told her that I didn’t hold it against her, but just wanted to express I was feeling hurt.

But hey, I was open and honest in communicating with her! Honestly, I think she actually understood. I could hear her voice waver a little. She backtracked a bit and said that she didn’t mean it ‘like that’ (she did). But she was incredibly defensive, because she didn’t like feeling like she was responsible for making me feel bad, and we ended the call shortly after, terse, on shaky terms. I cry a lot when I think about my mother. She’s an incredibly sharp, capable, amazing woman, who I conflict with a lot and who’s actively contributed to a lot of my trauma, because the cycle of abuse is hard to break. I think, if she had the resources and support I had - she would have had a better life. She would have been a legend. She often talks about how despite it all, I grew up in a much better household than she did. I don’t disagree. It doesn’t justify how she’s treated me, but I know that she went through a lot, enough to break people, and I know that she loves me. But feelings are just that, and the actions that she took pushed me away. But I want to keep this relationship, and I want to facilitate open communication with her, so that maybe she’ll do the same one day.

I want to practice more honest communication not just with my family, but with friends and partners and everyone around me. I want to be upfront when my feelings are hurt, and I want to tell people when they matter to me, because people deserve to know that they matter to others. It’s something I want to actively work on. Nowadays when Spider asks me how I’m doing, I’ll spit out ‘I’m ok’ instantly, ruminate on it for a few seconds, and then nod or say that actually I’m not doing so great. I default to ‘I’m fine’ as I’m sure we all do. But I want to work on having better relationships with others, and also with myself, so that I can be a better communicator, and touch upon that idea of compassionate honesty.
