lv au week, day 2: super heroes

Again, written solely because @cubbiegirl and @marshmellowbobcat are earth angels. I even added a title this time so that MB doesn’t have to come up with one.

Why did I write this as Veronica’s journal? Mostly because it’s a style which seems to be a fanfic right of passage and I haven’t tried it so...here we are.

I probably owe a lot to other superhero universes and their world building (as in, referring to them as ‘supers’ ala The Incredibles). What are the full extent of Logan and Veronica’s powers? *shrug emoji*

Date: February 15 Tracked a low-level Kane agent to a tourist trap bistro in downtown San Diego. Place was packed. Is this the new thing? Shitty men forget to make Valentine’s Day reservations, so they make them for the day after?

Thought I had the guy but when I mistimed my pulse he metamorphosed into a cockroach and scurried away.

Best part of the night was the chocolate mousse I got to-go. Despite appearances within, the food wasn’t too bad.

Date: February 17 Caught up to Cockroach. Real name is Abel Koontz. Slimy guy tried to escape again, but Mac outfitted me with a souped up Morph Choke as backup — emphasis on the choke. Gonna need to recalibrate that a bit, Mackenzie.

Bonus! Forgot it was laundry day, so had to wear my backup uni. Next time I run into Meg out in the field I’ll have to ask her if she can see my underwear through it.

Date: February 18 Finally got around to watching season two of The Boys. Where do they get this shit?

If Piznarski brings up forming some sort of super team for the 7-millionth time at the summit this year, I’m siccing Clayton on him.

Date: February 21 Got into a fight with Mac. Technically my fault.

I faded while in public, and look, I get it.

Being detected while living as my alter would be bad. BUT!! Being forced to interact with my ex as he is on a date with a woman who legitimately looks like she could be my doppelganger is very bad.

Date: February 22 Clarified with Mac: me fading in public did not worry her. Me tripping Leo on purpose as I faded was apparently a problem.

Date: February 24 Cockroach stood me up.

Date: February 25 For all that is good and holy if another fucking cocky cowboy of a super moves to Neptune, I am going to lose my shit. This newest one? Got in my way as I attempted to track Kane, Jr into a warehouse. Fucking Smirky McCowboy stepped in my way and assured me I didn’t want to follow. Something about a dozen armed guards with guns aimed at the door. MAYBE THAT WAS MY PLAN!

(Because, of course the guy ripped a powers page right out of Superman’s book and has x-ray vision.)

(And, his uni? Not hard to tell when a super has money. They’re always the worst.)

Date: February 28 Ran into Smirky McCowboy again. This time outside of a poker game hosted by a real estate developer with connections to Kane. Smirky said it was a coincidence.

Still no sign of Cockroach.

Date: March 2 FUCKING HELL. He beat me to it. AGAIN! How is he doing this?

Date: March 4 Smirky’s name is apparently Logan. Which I learned because I was getting coffee at Willow Grove (just minding my business while covertly eavesdropping on previously mentioned real estate developer) when some guy sat at my table. Unprompted. Uninvited. UNWELCOME.

Mask or no mask, THAT SMIRK.

The more concerning thing is that his x-ray vision apparently sees through the skeletal enhancements Mac wired into my mask, meaning he ID’d me right away.

Date: March 5 Why do they keep coming here? Doesn’t New York have more crime? Go there!

Mac says it’s my fault for busting the Fitzpatricks, outing Kane as the sociopath he is, and helping all those kids find their lost dogs.

Okay, she only mentioned the first two, but I think the third has value.

The point is! these hangers-on need to find their own territory.

Date: March 6 Mac traced at least 70 arrests to Smirky in the Los Angeles area alone. I hate him.

Date: March 10 If he scoops another one of my cases…

Date: March 11 He calls me Supergirl.

He calls me Supergirl and I want to punch him.

Mac says Cockroach’s tracker is still active but the signal is being blocked.

Date: March 13 Saw Meg today. She took down her own parents. Fucking savage. God, I love her. She flew me up to American Plaza and we drank champagne to celebrate.

Oh! And good news! She says my backup uni isn’t see through.

Date: March 13 Woke up with this terrifying thought: can smirky see through my uni?

He wouldn’t...right? I mean...he’s an asshole but I don’t think he’s a creep.

Date: March 16 I punched him.

Not for the underwear thing! He swears he’s never looked and I weirdly believe him.

And I didn’t punch him as much as he walked into a pulse. Yes, fine.

I maybe purposefully put up the pulse to see if his x-ray vision could detect it. But I didn’t tell him to walk into it.

(He can’t detect it, btw. I did it a second time just to be sure.)

Date: March 18 Found Cockroach. Or, I guess I should say Koontz. He washed up on Dog Beach as his alter.

Mac said it could be a coincidence but we both know that’s not true.

Date: March 19 Did I do this? Did I get Cockroach killed?

Date: March 19 Logan has very good alcohol.

Date: March 20 Hangovers. Bad.

Date: March 20 Logan makes very good pancakes.

Date: March 21 Logan has seen me drunk, which means Logan must be destroyed.

Date: March 22 In a certain light, the smirk isn’t so bad.

Date: March 23 Oh god.

Do I like him?

Date: March 25 I hate myself. I’m a giant cliché. I apologize to all women supers everywhere.

Logan swears he can’t see past the new enhancements Mac made to my uni.

He also asked me to dinner. Was tempted to 1) fade, and 2) run away, but I did neither.

Date: March 26 Adding insult to injury, Smirky McCowboy really knows how to kiss.

Date: March 27 Mac says I shouldn’t be so hard on myself.

Actually, what she said was that neither he nor I are all that pleasant to be around so we might be meant for each other.

Date: March 28 He really knows how to do some other things, too.

Date: March 29 Logan got me a present: surveillance footage of Kane’s mysterious second-in-command with Koontz the night before he was found.

He’s been upgraded to not the absolute worst.

Date: March 29 To be perfectly clear: we are not a super team.

Date: March 30 Logan and I are on surveillance detail tonight.

Maybe I can convince him to stop for some chocolate mousse.

On synastry and how to approach it

If you follow me you may have noticed few of my posts where I'm fixating on the fact that I don't know a certain person's birth date. And I said I'm sensing a nice Venus-Mars connection and honestly now that I think about it, I feel like Jupiter is heavily underlined in here as well. So that made me think of synastry a lot (not that I don't think about it on daily basis) and it made me want to elaborate a bit. Also because I see this weird approach where people single out certain aspects and turn them into "make it or break it" kind of deal and that is just wrong.

Actually it's similar with natal charts. The difference here is obvious - you have two individuals which means double the options in which way the energy may go and more potential for aspects to cancel each other out. So while natal interpretations of, for example, planets in the houses will resonate with you, all the black and white interpretations of synastry house overlays belong in the dumpster imho. And I knooow, I knoooow, one of my first posts was about house overlays. It was very generalized one and I did disclaim to take the entire chart into consideration. But sometimes I see these descriptions where people say "oh my god Venus in the 8th house! This is highly sexual aspect!" But what if none of the people have their Mars nor Venus activated, maybe except for a Venus-Saturn square that puts a big dump on the whole thing. Also, this may as well indicate taking care of shared resources (because that's one of the main themes of the 8th). Besides - and that's my personal take - overlays are less important than aspects between planets unless a) you’re putting a stellium in someone’s house b) it's about angles, because having the same planet as someone's ascendant is a big thing and I can guarantee you that most of the people you create bonds with will have that configuration with you.

Speaking of which, the type of people you attract is highly dependant on your chart. Angles are important but so are aspects and planet placements. I'll give you an example based on my own natal chart, because, obviously, I know myself well and I pay attention to charts of the people I come in contact with. As an Aquarius rising, I attract a lot of Aqua personal planets, Leo risings and people with personal planets in Leo - surprisingly not a single Leo Sun. As a Sagittarius dominant person, most of my friends are Gemini Moons or Sag Moons. Surprisingly I only befriended one Gemini Sun in my life + my belowed dog who was a Gemini. My Aries Moon makes me weak for Aries Suns. Sun is opposite Mars (5th house) - it, again, points to Aries (and Scorpios as well). Dominant fire element and Aries in the 3rd (easy communication) helps here a lot. Having Sagittarius in the 11th (house of friends) and Jupiter in the 7th (house of partnerships), I tend to be friends with other Sadges BUT that Jupiter in the 7th makes me very attracted to Pisces as well. So DO take classic rulership into consideration!

That leads me to another point - modalities. I have a lot of mutable energy so I love other mutable energies. SQUARES omg, especially in romantic/sexual relationships. They do bring tension but hear me out. You need trines and sextiles but squares bring spice. I can guarantee you that having a flowing Mars-Venus contact will give you a pleasant feelings for one another, easiness in communication and a natural synchronicity, but it's the square that will make you wanna rip each other's clothes off. Soooo... I mean, whichever you prefer I guess. Squares are also stimulating, with trines the energy flows nicely, squares bring interest... it's a different element, but the same modality... a perfect mix to make you drawn to the other person. It's similar yet intriguing. Another example, as a Sag Venus my tastes concerning arts and music should clash with a Pisces Venus - that’s what a textbook definition will tell you - but surprise, surprise, half of my favourite artists have Venus in Pisces.

Now with oppositions it's a completely different thing. I think they work wonderful when there are yin-yang planets involved. As I mentioned earlier, as a Sagittarius Sun I love Gemini Moons. They compliment each other. The thing is, with opposites you either get each other or you just pass each other. So it fluctuates. I've noticed that especially when there's the same planet involved. Two people having Mercury opposition will get each other so well they will finish each other's sentences one day and then completely miss the mark the next. Like two vehicles driving in opposite directions.

Trines aren't 100% amaaaazing. I know many people who, like me, have inner planets in fire signs and our values, ways of thinking and approach to certain issues are completely different. We do express them in the same manner though, which is by being loud lol. Trines also bring laziness so if you have too many of them the relationship may just fizzle out. Sextiles on the other hand are so underappreciated. Air fuels fire and water nourishes the earth - it’s way more interesting than a trine where both signs are in the same element, imho. Some astrologers will tell you sextiles are "weaker" but that's just stupid. They’re just as important, okay?

Sometimes you don't even have to have an actual aspect. Whoa, I know, mind-blown. But I see that constantly. Obviously having planets in a tight aspects is very important but let's say you have Aquarius Venus at 5° and the other person has Sun in Aqua at 20°. They don't make an aspect but it's the same sign, therefore you're going to express these energies in the same manner - which makes you compatible (tho I don't like that word). Now the smaller the orb, the more significant the aspect is. I've read somewhere that the aspect with the tightest orb kind of represents the theme of the relationship - I haven't been able to really analyze this theory tho. When it comes to orbs overall, Alexander Von Pronay is suggesting to use aspects up to 7°. I'd do that and then look at aspects under 2° to really see which energies are stronger. Liz Greene said that if you're feeling an aspect, even if the orb is wider, well, you're feeling it and it's there. I suspect it may depend on what energies you're sensitive to. If, for example, your chart ruler is Venus, you may feel Venus aspects more. And then with Uranus, Neptune and Pluto I'd say up to 2°.

What's actually awesome are so called double whammies. It's when the same two planets are aspected both ways. So A person's Sun is trining B's Venus and B's Venus is sextile A's Sun. Or A's Moon is conjunct B's Sun and B's Sun is opposite A's Moon. I like double whammies cause they provide mutuality. People often ask "wHo FeeLs iT mORe????". First of all, there's no clear answer to that because everyone's different and their charts are different and some respond to the energy one way and some, other. That's why I like to ask people: well, how do YOU feel about that aspect (if you, of course, know astrology well enough to pinpoint the energy). But with double whammies you basically exchange the same aspect so, hopefully, in 99%, it will be mutual.

What I also love is having the same aspect natally. Let's say you have a Mars-Mercury trine natally and the other person has it conjoined. That is awesome. It's like going through the same experiences in life and going "yeah! I went through that too! I understand!" Better yet if then those planets also make an aspect in the synastry chart. It's great. You're going to vibe so much.

About mutuality... A few weeks ago I was watching a livestream from Nina and Shaina from Party Trick Astrology (love those girls) and they were talking about synastry so I asked them a question related to these things cause, you know, I bet they've seen hundreds of charts and I'm always curious about other people's observations. So I asked about mutuality and one of them gave an example of a girl whose Venus was beautifully aspected by a guy and the guy's Venus not being aspected at all. And how this, for example, pointed to the guy being into the girl but not vice versa. And I thought that's interesting because I'd assume it would be the other way around. Her planets didn't activate his Venus so he shouldn't be into her romantically. And I actually experienced that myself one time. I had this Aqua friend and had literally zero aspects to my Venus. Not even a semi-sextile, not even a quincunx, not even a wide generational planet connection. And I didn't see him through these romantic lens. So I guess there are no rules to this. OR it’s all about projection (which btw happens a lot in astrology). That's why I like to look at synastry charts and just get the overall vibe.

Now with that being said, the shocker. YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE ASPECTS WITH THE OTHER PERSON AT ALL. I know, a bummer. Here we, astrology junkies, are in the lookout for the perfect synastry chart but as I look at charts of celebrity couples I often see them having no Sun connections, no Venus or Mars connections, lame Moon aspects etc. That is indeed disappointing. That's why I was so stoked about that Britney-Justin synastry. Because I don't see connections like that one between all the "it” couples of today.

So I guess... astrology is bullshit... Nah, just kidding. But it is complex. Sometimes it’s quality over quantity. And you should approach synastry as a whole, just feel it out, you know? And I’ll leave you with that for today because it’s getting long.

These are only connections I’ve noticed on my own. Please let me know which connections I’ve missed!

Honoka Yukishiro (Cure White) - “Yukishiro” means “snow white.”

Hikari Kujo (Shiny Luminous) - “Hikari” is just the literal word for “light,” alluding to her role in the series.

Saki Hyuuga (Cure Bloom/Bright) - “Saki” means “bloom” or “blooming.” “Hyuuga” can mean “facing the sun’s direction”; if you’re wondering what relevance that has, look what type of flower appears in Bloom’s transformation.

Mai Mishou (Cure Egret/Windy) - “shou” can mean “fly,” referring to the egret bird.

Nozomi Yumehara/Cure Dream - “Nozomi” can mean either “hope” or “wish,” as she introduces herself as the Cure of hope (I think). “Yume” means “dream.”

Rin Natsuki/Cure Rouge - “Natsu” means “summer,” referencing her fire powers.

Ichika Usami/Cure Whip - It’s not exact, but “Usagi means “rabbit,” referring to her animal theme. Thus is where Sailor Moon’s first name comes from.

Himari Arisugawa/Cure Custard - “Hi” can mean “sun,” which is sometimes portrayed as yellow.

Aoi Tategami/Cure Gelato - From first to last name, it translates literally as “blue mane.”

Asumi Fuurin/Cure Earth - “Asu” is just how the Japanese pronounce the English word “earth.” So Cure Earth’s civilian name is literally the same. “Fuu” means “wind,” referring to her actual element. The same goes for Fuu Hououji.

D3 reactions and thoughts

Let’s start:

That tribute had me tearing up. Miss you Cameron. 😔

Mal narrating the intro just like in D1.

Well I guess they retconned Dizzy being invited to Auradon in D2.

They could just bring a bus to the Isle and get a bunch of VKs in it instead of just choosing four of them each time. It’s easier and takes less trips. And it would also leave the VKs less anxious because there would be a better chance for one of them to get picked for the program and there would be less waiting.

I like those callbacks to D1, really nice.

Ben sang ‘Did I Mention’ before proposing to Mal! 😍

Hades vs Mal. I wonder why Hades has to use that blue amber (was it mentioned in the books? And was there any mention of who is ruling the Underworld in Hades absence? Because without him that place must be in chaos.)

Closing the barrier and leaving the kids behind is not the best decision, but the only thing that can be done right now.

Beast, the existence of the Isle is kinda partially your fault, you should’ve taken better care of it and its citizens in the first place.

I understand what Audrey must be feeling, after all they grew up together, they have history (at some point Ben must have felt something for Audrey too), and then she lost her boyfriend (and the crown) in such a short time. But Ben and Mal would’ve fallen in love any way, love spell or no love spell, as they are true loves. And the way Audrey had acted didn’t help her case.

Mal and Ben are at fault with how things ended up tho. An apology would’ve (probably) prevented those events from ever happening.

(Regular Show The Movie, for example, had Rigby apologizing to his teacher for ruining the championship game and the revenge plan was forgotten.)

Queen Leah isn’t helping it either. Honestly, I think she’s the one to blame for the way Audrey is. She’s lost her daughter’s childhood and tried to make up for it with Audrey, spoiling her rotten and grooming her for a future she wished for her granddaughter. And look at how it turned out.

Btw, I really like her solo she has a great voice.

I still don’t know why they keep powerful artifacts like the scepter and the wand in a museum. They should be somewhere secured, not under the watch of “Sleepy”.

Poor Jane, that’s a birthday she’ll never forget.

I knew lying to her friends would come back to bite her, she shouldn’t have kept the truth from Evie and the others. Together they would’ve thought of a better solution to all this mess.

Going by the theory that King Triton and Ursula are Poseidon/Neptune’s children, that means Uma and Mal are related. I wonder if that’s why their magic reacted to each other like that.

Audrey vs Mal = Maleficent vs Hades.

When Hades attacked Mal with his amber he only weakened her but when Mal wielded it, because she’s only ‘half Hades’ the amber’s power almost killed Audrey when her own curse rebounded, making it stronger than a normal sleeping curse. Maybe with time Mal can learn to use it without risk.

Ben’s probably thinking “My father-in-law is a GOD?!” and later he’s all awkward around him lol.

And the barrier is down! The VKs will finally know a real life and the villains can have a second chance and prove they deserve it. And if they don’t, well… idek.

Harry trying to woo Jane and Evie… boy, Uma is right there!

The credits sequence reminded me of the first HSM. Nice.

Aaaaaannnd we end it with the core four racing back to the Isle. Fin.

Well, Hades being Mal’s dad was more than obvious. I just wish the movie writers handled the information from the books and the cartoon webseries the way the books managed to do, and not just ignore them. Now I have to think of a headcanon of why Maleficent lied to Mal about her parentage and when exactly Mal discovered the truth.

AND I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE VK’S OTHER PARENTS TOO! AND JANE’S! AND DOUG’S!

Also, this movie needed some Lonnie. It would’ve made it 1000% better.

With the whole “bringing the barrier down once and for all” this film was meant to be the last but… I didn’t feel it. Not the way I did when I watched HSM3 and Cheetah Girls 3. It didn’t have that finale vibe tbh.

It was not perfect but… I liked it overall.

Rest In Peace, Zero. We miss you so much, Old Man.

I met Zero when I was about 13 years old. My cousin and one of our friends and I had gone for a walk in our neighborhood. On the way back home, we were walking passed one of the houses across the alley behind my house, we saw a bunch of puppies running around in the person's backyard. This one little chubby boi came running out and started walking with us. I picked him up and put him back in the yard. We kept walking, and I just kept smiling from seeing the puppies. I turned around and saw the lil chunky boi running behind us again. So I pick him up, and put him back in the yard. 'Puppy, no. You can't come home with me' I walked away and told him to stay, and we started walking again. This time the puppy came charging out of the yard again, I picked him up. Hugged him so tight and placed him back in the yard. We all took off running to my aunt's house. We walked in the house, and I saw my older cousin. I asked if she could take me to get a puppy. 'Where the hell are you gunna get a puppy?!' She whisper screamed at me. I grabbed her arm and pulled her out of the house. She drove me over to that house where I saw him, and we both went up and knocked on the door. I realize who's house I'm in. It was an elementary school friend I knew from way way back when's house and his grandmother was the one we were about to talk to. (Btw, the elementary school friend's dog, who is Zero's mother, name was Neptune) A cute little old lady opened the door, I asked her if she was selling the puppies in the back yard. She told me I could have them all lol. We walked to her back yard, and I told her 'I only want that one', and I pointed to the cutest little chunky-yellow pupper that I had ever seen. She told me I could just have him! Can you believe that? She just gave him to me!! 😭😭

I scooped him up and my cousin drove us back to her house. 'Aunt Audrey is going to kill you,' she laughed. 'I don't care, he's too cute!' We walked into the house, but I had my back turned because I knew my mom was in there. She was sitting in her same spot as always when she would come pick me up after she got off of work. 'Mom, hey! I love you......can I have a dog?' I was scared af but I asked anyways. 'Where the hell are you going to find a dog?' She laughed. I didn't laugh, I turned around and sit him on her lap. The look in her eyes went from: rage, betrayal, anger, murder, confusion, amusement to omg-a-cute-ass-puppy! In the matter of 3 seconds. I don't remember much after that but, I got to keep my dog ❤

I named him after a character from Holes. His full name is Hector Lamont (after a cousin of mine who died the year before) Zeroni aka Zero. Later on, I remembered the dog from Nightmare before Christmas was also named Zero and he had a jack-o-lantern for a nose. It was awesome because Zero's nose would change colors from black to pink with a couple black spots. Zero was my first child, my first and only son and also my best friend. He was such a beautiful dog, smart and goofy at the same time. He was also such a little weirdo lol. Just like me.

Saturday, 3/16/19 he died. He had a really bad seizure after hitting his head on my knee while I was heading to get some paper towels to clean up some glue on a craft project. He had simply gotten right in front of me, as usual since he's gotten old. And his entire body seized up and hit the floor. I stayed right by his side, rubbing his head and talking to him, I even got mom to get my a cool rag so I could wipe the spit from his mouth. I cried the entire time I was by his side. I told him how much we love him and that it was ok because I was there. He was not alone. About 30 minutes later, the seizure stopped and he just layed there trying to catch his breath, I still never moved. I just kept talking to him and rubbing his fur. With his read resting in my other handed. His breaths became slower and slower until it just stopped. My heart shattered!! And I started sobbing uncontrollably, and whispered 'he's gone' to my mom.

This is has been the most traumatic thing I have ever gone through and I am so deeply hurt that that was our last moments together. He was so scared and I felt so helpless and so afraid. I felt like it was my fault! I still feel like it's my fault. I feel his spirit EVERY DAY! My youngest daughter keeps looking for him and I catch everyone still trying to see him playing outside. I don't remember what life was like before him, but I hate that I have to remember what it's like to be without him.

I love you Old Man, you would have been 15ish years old this May. I will forever cherish the joy and love you brought our family. We miss and love you so deeply, you will never be forgotten

Was Jesus a Mythical Figure Based on the Giant Orion? Um, NO, and Here Is Why:

Like the ancients, people in the modern world are fascinated by constellations. Whether its Hercules, Draco, Hydra or the Southern Cross (the latter only seen in the southern hemisphere), our minds come alive with imagery, legend and mystery when we see them or hear their names.

Perhaps the most famous of all is Orion.

Orion, aka The Hunter, stalks the night skies, as if on a perpetual quest for game. One could imagine him holding a lion in one hand and a sword in another, or perhaps a bow and arrow. Two other constellations, Canis Major and Canis minor, were thought by some to he his dogs, aiding their master in the hunt. The constellation Orion is one of the most marvelous sites in the heavens, but who was it named after? What is the myth that it was said to evoke among the ancient Greeks?

In Greco-Roman myth, Orion was the giant son of Poseidon and the gorgon Euryale. He grew to be a hunter, one who boasted that he would wipe out all the animals of the earth. Gaia, goddess of the Earth, didn’t like that idea, so she created an animal that could rival him; a giant scorpion.

Like Godzilla and King Ghidorah, these two behemoths clashed in the wilderness. One can only imagine Orion firing his colossal bow and then later wielding an equally colossal sword while the scorpion counterattacked with its stinger and pincers, their collective roar shaking the earth. Eventually, however, the scorpion prevailed, leaving its foe bleeding and decaying on the battlefield.

A true Clash of the Titans!

Honoring their bravery, Zeus made both of them constellations.

Like with many myths, there are several variant versions of Orion’s tale, in particular pertaining to his birth and death. Nevertheless, each is a fascinating story, a great myth that is sadly known to only a relative few today. Indeed, such ignorance can lead one to be easily deceived about it, as well as to draw wrong conclusions about the myth.

Enter Jesus Mythicists.

Jesus Mythicists are fond of trying to argue that Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World, was a mythical figure instead of a historical one. Indeed, they claim that the story of Jesus was based on pagan myth, that some ancient Jews repackaged pagan myth into a new Hebrew myth. There are many gods and demigods that they try to harken to as candidates for Jesus being a rip-off from, anyone from Horus and Hercules to Romulus and Inanna. Orion is one of these.

Let us now further explore the myth, in order to see why this is a stupid idea.

1. Born of a virgin?

There are two versions of Orion’s birth. The first is that mentioned above, of Poseidon and the gorgon Euryale being his parents (sex was involved). The other tells of how Zeus, Poseidon and Hermes (Roman Jupiter Neptune and Mercury respectfully) visited King Hyrieus of Thrace. Since the king showed them proper hospitality, the gods told him that they would give him anything he wanted. For a long time, King Hyrieus wanted an heir, but his wife had died years ago and he vowed to marry no other. So, he asked the gods for a son. The gods granted it…in one of the most unusual ways possible.

You see, King Hyrieus had recently sacrificed a bull. Hermes grabbed the bull’s hide and put it on the ground. Then, all three gods peed on it.

Yep, I had that reaction too.

Finishing, they buried it in the ground, and ten months later…Orion emerged from it.

True, there is no sex involved in this myth, no sexual encounter that conceived Orion, but this doesn’t = a Virgin birth, unless you want to call the earth a “virgin”. Course if you went that far, the sky, wind, rocks, trees, seas, paper, cars, DVDs, TVs and computers would be called “virgins”. Plus, one has to remember that in Greco-Roman myth, the earth was personified. It was considered living.

And what was the name of this personification?

The Romans called her both Terra and Tellus.

The Greeks...called her Gaia.

Indeed, Pseudo-Apollodorus, an ancient mythographer, stated bluntly that she was his mother.

And was Gaia a virgin?

No.

Indeed, long before Orion, indeed before the gods and the titans, Gaia had married Ouranos, god of the starry sky. Together, they brought forth the Cyclops, Hechatonchires and Titans.

And how did they do this?

Sex.

I know, shocking right?

Thus…Orion was not virgin born.

2. Born on December 25th?

No.

BTW: Jesus wasn’t said to be born on December 25th in the Bible, that idea being a later extra-biblical idea. And before you try to say “Oh uh that’s something that they have in common!” : Do you realize how many religious and mythological figures were not said to be born on December 25th?

Some “similarity”

3. Visited by shepherds?

No.

4. Visited by Wise Men?

No. He was conceived by three male gods and a female god in one version of his myth, but that’s it. I could see Jesus Mythicists trying to (pitifully) try to argue that King Hyrieus is comparable to Joseph, Gaia is comparable to Mary and Zeus, Hermes and Poseidon are comparable to the wise men, but…it would be utter stupidity to do so. Joseph was a carpenter, not a king, Gaia was neither a virgin nor married to King Hyrieus and the three gods were Orion’s fathers, not mysterious magi from the east (BTW: the Bible never said that there were three wise men; it only mentions that they had three gifts (Matthew 2:1-12).

I could also see them (once again pitifully) trying to state that since King Hyrieus would have went to Orion shortly after he was born, therefore this myth gave rise to the story of the three kings who visited Christ shortly after he was born. After all, in both stories, a divine infant was visited by royalty, right? However, the Magi are never called “kings” in the Bible. Indeed, they were simply astrologers, neither gods nor kings. The idea that they were kings is a later, extra-biblical invention.

Plus, in the main version of the myth, Orion was the son of Poseidon and a gorgon.

Repeat; they conceived him by having sex.

5. Did miracles?

While Jesus did a wide variety of miracles, Orion could only do one kind of miracle that didn’t involve super strength (see below). Jesus was a miracle worker, while Orion was a hunter.

Big difference.

6. Walked on water?

Both actually did walk on water. Orion was given the power to walk on water by his father Poseidon.

Does this mean that the story of Jesus walking on water was derived from the Orion myth?

Nope.

Its odd that Jesus Mythicists will ignore the fact that Yahweh, in the Old Testament, is likewise depicted in Psalms as...walking on water.

“He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.”

Job 9:8.

Repeat:

“He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.”

Considering that this passage indicates that only God can “tread on the waves of the sea”, and that Jesus walked on water...we can therefore conclude biblically that Jesus is therefore...God, which was the point of the miracle of walking on water!

Jesus Mythicists will cry foul at this point, ranting and raving about how the next verse mentions Orion. Well, let’s look at Job 9:9, shall we?

“He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.”

The Hebrew word translated here as “Orion” is “Kesil”. There are several kesils in Hebrew, but this particular one refers to the constellation Orion (repeat, the constellation, not the giant demigod)...as well as to its adjoining constellations.

I.e. constellations that are close to it.

And which constellations are close to Orion?

Taurus

Lepus

Gemini

Eridanus

Monoceros

Um, not that strong of a connection.

Plus, not all cultures in the ancient world believed that the constellation Orion represented Orion the giant demigod, and indeed most didn’t even call it “Orion” (Kesil and Orion are obviously not the same word, and the former is not the Hebrew name of the mythological giant Orion, only the name of the constellation that the Greeks called “Orion” (along with constellations adjoining it). The reason we use “Orion” for the constellation is because we simply borrowed that name from the Greeks). As I pointed out in one of my other articles, ancient Egyptians believed that the constellation depicted the god Osiris, not the demigod giant Orion (their myths are VERY different). In Mesopotamia, the constellation was thought to depict Anu, the Babylonian sky god (whose myths are FAR different from those of Osiris and Orion).

Question If an ancient Hebrew read the word “Kesil” in a book, would they have initially thought of their OWN interpretation of the constellation...or that of the pagan Greeks?

However, let’s assume that the story of the giant Orion is somehow being alluded to or referenced in the passage. Not only would this NOT debunk the fact that the story of Jesus walking on water had Job 9:8 as its basis (whether you believe that the story is true or not) , but the Hebrew writers often repackaged elements of pagan belief and turned them on their heads in a monotheistic context. Before Leviathan was written about in Hebrew scripture, he was well known in Canaan and Ugarit . Behemoth likewise was derived from Atik, a mythical bull who was given the slight misnomer “El’s Calf” or “Calf of God”, even though it was considered a full fledged bull. He was possibly also derived from the Bull of Heaven in the Epic of Gilgamesh, a monster slain by Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu. The biblical writers took these monsters of pagan myth and repackaging them, in order to prove monotheistic points. Likewise, as I mentioned in another article, Zechariah 5:9-11 borrows elements of the myth of Pandora, in order to prove a monotheistic, non-pagan theological point (the links to both of these other articles will be in the sources section below).

So even if the myth is being referenced, it isn’t an instance of Old Testament paganization: the Hebrew writers would simply be taking elements from a pagan story and applying them to Yahweh, to show that he, and he alone, had power over the waters, that he alone could walk on them.

Thus, even if Job 9:8-9 repackaged pagan ideas, that doesn’t = that the story of Jesus walking on water was derived from pagan myth; Job 9:8, where God walks on water, is still the basis of it, not the myth of Orion. Remember, Christianity derived from Judaism, not ancient Greek religion, and thus would be expected to have a Jewish instead of Greek cultural background.

Thus, we cannot invoke a pagan origin for the story of Jesus walking on water.

7. Healed a blind man?

No, Orion was blinded, only to be healed miraculously by the sun god Helios.

8. Son of God?

Not in the way Jesus is.

When Jesus is called “Son of God”, he is not being called a demigod like Orion. Nor does the term mean that he was created, without being born, like Adam and the angels were in the Bible (Genesis 6:1-4, Luke 3:38). It means that he is God the Son, a part of the Trinity of God. While Orion was half god and half man, Jesus is fully God and fully man.

9. Turned water into wine?

No.

10. Multiplied bread and loaves?

No.

11. Preached?

No.

12. Prophesied?

No.

13. Carpenter?

No.

14. Crucified?

No. In the mainstream version of the myth, he’s killed by a scorpion. In several others, the Greek goddess Artemis kills him with her arrows.

Dying from arrows or scorpion stings…is a tad different from death by crucifixion, to say the very least.

15. Resurrected?

No, he was turned into a constellation after death.

This didn’t include a physical resurrection. Indeed, no monster or hero was physically resurrected in order to become a constellation. The Nemean Lion, for example, was slain by Hercules, who used its super strong pelt as armor. This pelt didn’t vanish when the Nemean Lion was placed in the heavens as the constellation Leo. Indeed, we have no evidence that the rest of its body was done in the same manner. Likewise, the magic ram whose golden fleece Jason and the Argonauts sought after had died, its famous hide stripped from it. The ram became the constellation Aries, and yet…the hide was still on earth, something that shouldn’t have been if it had been physically resurrected into a constellation. Indeed, Hercules died without a physical resurrection (he was turned into a god, but his body was totally vaporized by his funeral pyre), and yet he in turn was also a constellation, which indicates that physical resurrections were not involved when it came to being made a constellation. The Hydra itself never really died, its immortal head buried after it was defeated by Hercules, and yet it also became a constellation…despite the fact that it was still alive, not having the rest of its body attached. This should also be indicative that being made a constellation didn’t involve a physical resurrection or attaining a new physical body.

Plus, if people and animals were physically resurrected when turned into constellations, then why where constellations seen as spirits by the ancient Greeks? Why were they not seen as flesh and blood beings? Sure, Hydra was still a flesh and blood creature, but its constellation wasn’t.

Thus, Orion wasn’t resurrected.

16. Called “Savior of the World”?

No.

17. Will rule a future age in a new earth?

No.

Out of 17…Orion only got one right.

Not much of an inspiration for the Gospel, eh?

Orion is a great myth and a great constellation.

Jesus is the Son of God, King of the universe.

Venus’ Transit of Virgo

Venus enters Virgo on August 21st at 5:06 AM EDT. Relationships, money, values and self-esteem are filtered through the lens of precision and service. This means an exacting standard around what you want, have and own, or (if distorted) an attitude of slavery regarding who you love and what you’re worth.

This transit will hi-light the specifics of what you want – what’s missing and what could be better. This is excellent for self-improvement but it can also lead to picking away at your self-worth until there’s nothing left. The focus on flaws must be balanced with the drive to improve. Change the recording from “I’m worthless” to “I’m worth the upgrade.”

Venus in Virgo wants you to get real about love and resources. This entails looking at the specifics (the truth) of what’s working and what isn’t. If what you have/love isn’t working, this will not be a happy transit. But if you can see beyond the “failure” to the opportunity to make it better, this is can be the moment you grab the Virgo scythe and cut through the wasteful people/situations that are preventing you from being your best.

If you’re into helping others, this transit can be about love through service. It’s tricky energy because it can quickly tip over into slavery. But with proper boundaries and self-awareness (your self-worth is not defined by what you do for others) this can be a time where you experience the love and happiness that comes from simply making someone’s life bette: no applause ,no congrats. There’s nothing in it for you – you’re helping them and that’s it but that’s enough. Again, be careful -some will take advantage of this and if your values are weak you’ll fall victim to the belief that you’re only worth what you can do for others.

Overall, I see this as a transit of focus. Virgo is about specifics, so this is an opportunity to focus on what you really want and what really makes you happy, with an injection of realism.

BTW, Virgo is associated with pets, so those with Venus in Virgo tend to have an affinity with domesticated dogs and cats (or gerbils, guinea pigs, etc). Love is expressed with worried nurturing and obsessive care. This can also extend to human pets *ahem* partners – the fussing/control issues are a way of expressing love. If your partner has Venus in Virgo this doesn’t mean that they view you as a pet, but they do see you as a work in progress and their ultimate responsibility.
