Hakuoki Kyoka-Roku Rain Scenario [雨下語り] Intro Saito/Hijikata/Harada

Anyway, this is the intro for the Kyoka-roku rain scenario story that I kept on putting off.... pretty sure this game is where this cg comes from.... also the other kyoka-roku stuff will not be looked at til next year....

Hakuoki Kyoka-Roku Rain Scenario Introduction for Saito/Hijikata/Harada

First year of Keiou, early summer——

Seeing Kyoto's sky, as a sign of it being the rainy season, had been covered in thick clouds since morning. 

I immediately went to the pharmacy/drug store to go buy medicine, walking together with Hijikata-san on the road. 

After leaving the pharmacy, I suddenly raised my head upward, and the sky felt so gloomy and looked like it would rain soon. 

We thought that we would be able to return to headquarters before it rained, but......  

As if to mock my thoughts, the sky responded and it started to rain, and soon, raindrops began pattering onto the ground.

In an instant, Kyoto was enveloped by pouring rain. Hijikata-san and I ran to the side of a building to take shelter from the rain, then we looked up towards the grey sky.

Chizuru:....The rain is really coming down.

Hijikata: Yeah, by the looks of it, the rain will not be stopping anytime soon.

HIjikata: Sorry, I wish I had brought an umbrella.

Chizuru: No. It's my fault I spent so much time asking questions at the pharmacy/drug store.

Chizuru: If I finished asking my questions sooner, we could have left before it rained......

Hijikata: That wouldn't have made a difference.  Even if the [your] conversation ended sooner, it still would have rained.

Hijikata: Furthermore, when looking for Kodo-san, there's no harm in asking for information from people at the pharmacy. The doctor might have met with the drug seller/pharmacist somewhere.

Chizuru: Nn......

But no matter how much the Shinsengumi searched, my father, Yukimura Kodo, was still nowhere to be found. After the conversation with Hjikata-san broke down/was interrupted, I looked up towards the sky.

I had no idea when the rain would stop.

Chizuru: So what should we do next?

Hijikata: Well. It wouldn't be difficult to take shelter from the rain by using the nearby houses [buildings]....... the worst outcome of running back would be getting soaked in the rain.

Chizuru: But I would like to avoid that. Because doing so could get the medicine wet which would waste it.

HIjikata: That's true. Although it's wrapped in oily paper [i’m pretty sure there’s a term for this in JP but I don’t know it or feel looking it up],  it won't guarantee it from not getting wet.

Chizuru: What about borrowing an umbrella from a nearby resident?

We looked around through the heavy rain to see if there was a house we could borrow an umbrella from.

Then, the sound of failing rain hitting the ground was interrupted by footsteps.

???: Really, just my luck that this occurred on the way back to headquarters...... nothing to be done though, for now try and find shelter from the rain.

Looking in the direction of a familiar sound, I caught the side of Harada-san who was following us in taking shelter from the rain.

Chizuru: Ah...... Harada-san!

Once I spoke, he noticed us and moved towards us.

Harada: Chizuru......? Also Hijikata-san is here.

Harada: What are you doing here? Avoiding the rain?

Hijikata: Yes, as you can see.

Chizuru: Harada-san, here's a towel. Please use it.

Harada: Oh, thanks.

Harada-san took my towel, then sighed.

Harada: It looks like Hijikata-san also didn't bring an umbrella.

Hijikata:  Sorry we didn't bring one. So we're now wondering what to do now.......

Harada: But, there was no way to know that it would be raining this much......

Harada: t's not realistic to stay here until it stops pouring, at least wait until the rain lets up slightly.

Hijikata:......Tsk. There's a mountain of work still piling up. Now is not the time to accept doing nothing.

Hijikata-san spoke unhappily.

it seemed that to return sooner, it would be best to borrow an  umbrella....

Then, I looked around again——

Chizuru: Eh......?

Through the downpour of rain, I felt like I could make out a figure, and I thought/wondered/mused to myself.

Chizuru: Ah, isn't that Saito-san....?

harada: Ah?

While holding an umbrella Saito-san seemed to notice us, and walked in our direction.

When he put away [closed] the umbrella, and shook off the rain from it, Saito-san turned towards us.

Saito: Yukimura.... Vice-commander, Sano, why are you here?

Hijikata: One the way back after buying some things it started raining.

Harada: Don't mention that, [rather] why are you carrying so many umbrellas?

Indeed, listening to Harada-san, that seemed to be the case.

In Saito-san's hand, in addition to the one he was using, his other hand was holding two umbrellas......

Saito: It's been raining for a few days now, and there didn't seem to be enough umbrellas at headquarters. I thought it best to get some more spare umbrellas, so I went and bought these.

Harada: That's it [So that’s it/why].

Hijikata: It's been hard/tough on you.

Saito: Not hard/difficult, judging from the situation, the umbrellas [being here] are timely.

Saito-san smiled and handed over his umbrella.

But presently there was  Hijikata-san, Saito-san, Harada-san, and me.

In contrast, including the one held by Saito-san, there was only a total of three umbrellas.

Chizuru: Ah......with only three umbrellas, there will be one person without one.

Harada: Yeah. All right, give one umbrella to Chizuru first. You use it first——

HIjikata: That leaves two left...... Okay. Harada, Saito, you take the other two.

Saito: No, we can't leave the vice-commander by yourself and take the umbrellas away/use the umbrellas ourselves.

Hijikata: This matter should have nothing to do with [me] being the vice-commander.

Harada: That's no good/It's not like that. We have to maintain proper decorum/manners.

Harada: So, the two left will be for Hijikata-san and Saito to use.

Saito: Sano, what about you?

Harada: It's just a bit of rain, even just running back would be no problem.

Chizuru: Well/Then, if that's the case, I'll be fine without an umbrella.

Harada: Don't say something stupid/That's nonsense. How could you do that.

Saito: Indeed. It would be shameful if we were the ones with the umbrella and you alone ended up wet.

Chizuru: But——

Hijikata-san interrupted me.

Hijikata: Since there are four people here and only three umbrellas, just have two people/of you share an umbrella together....

Hijikata: For us, the space underneath the umbrella is not large enough and our swords will bump into each other which may lead to problems in the event of an emergency.

After Hijikata-san spoke those words, he suddenly thought of something and looked at me. 

Hijikata: If you pair up with one of us, there will be enough space beneath the umbrella.

Chizuru: ....Eh?

In other words, I can only go back as long as I shared an umbrella with one of them..

I looked at the faces of the three of them.

The two seemed to understand Hijikata-san's words and nodded in agreement.

Harada: Chizuru, choose yourself. Who do you want to share an umbrella with?

Chizuuru: With, with whom....

They really dragged out this announcement, didn’t they? Although it makes sense to tell the audience the winners after the opening song had played.

Eyyo~ I watched the episode a day late cause I had to go to an event yesterday morning. At least I’d be posting this early so I don’t have to deal with it the later days. :P

To recap: 3rd place was Succubus Batra, 2nd was Magic Development Batra, and 1st place is Broadcasting Batra. While I assumed the winner is totally gonna be Iruma’s batra, this is good, too. They do deserve it for all the help they did at the incident Kiriwo-senpai started. They assisted the teachers in sending announcements to the students and helped make things look like it was still part of the festivities.

Of course, Professor Snape begrudgingly awarded Gryffindor with enough house points to win the house cup-

lol I mean we knew they were gonna win something. Come on, it’s Iruma’s batra so of course they’d win something. Joking aside, the other students really loved the fireworks display and some were even confused why the Magic Tools Batra never got an award.

Kalego-sensei explained, without divulging important info, that the Magic Tools Batra has done something dangerous for their show (the barriers and the explosion) and they should’ve been punished but the teachers also knew that the batra did succeed and a lot of students think highly of it and it wouldn’t be fair to disqualify them or something so they made another award. Except unlike the other awards with extra prizes, this one only gives one member of that batra a rank up.

Azz and Clara happily and proudly makes Iruma their representative. Kalego-sensei scold Iruma for dealing with the incident alone when he could’ve asked for help. Sensei might complain about the students from time-to-time but he does care and takes his job seriously. In this case, as he’s also Iruma’s familiar, there was a way Iruma could’ve called him and had him help with confronting Kiriwo-senpai but he didn’t. Kalego-sensei reminds Iruma that he can and should ask for adult help next time.

And so, let’s congratulate Iruma on becoming a Rank 3! He does think that he would’ve liked for Kiriwo-senpai to have this award if the incident never occurred but he’d protect this as it’s proof that he did have memories of senpai. (Iruma’s not at all mad at him and right now, I kinda of am not either).

Our boy is now popular but unlike before, it’s all positive instead of making his reputation worse. I was unable to get a screenshot of it but they had to sing the school anthem after the program and Iruma sang it without hesitation at first until it finally dawned on him he’s singing about eating humans lol.

Grandpa also congratulated him on being comfortable in the spotlight when he used to lay low before... which reminded Iruma that it was what he was trying to do and he forgot about it.

We get a little flashback of grandpa‘s escape. He wasn’t allowed but he scared the crap out of everyone with just his aura all cause he had to get to Iruma. Awww~

While it was by force, Iruma likes it here now. This is a misunderstanding.

Also this happened a bit earlier in the conversation. Like father, like daughter!

Seriously this time! Like Kiriwo-senpai mentioned last time, there are a lot of dangerous demons like him out there now. Azazel-san explains that they will help humans get home safely and properly for their own good but those humans will also get memory wiped about the Netherworld.

Before he could offer this to Iruma, Ameri appears and introduced the two to each other. Since she can’t tell her dad that Iruma had been reading the shoujo manga for her (thus revealing that Iruma is capable of reading human alphabet), she tries to convince her dad that Iruma is a demon and that they’re talking about something else and it has nothing to do with the forbidden books. (also, her dad lied about what he and Iruma were discussing so she doesn’t know her dad knew about Iruma)

Instant KO!

She wasn’t lying. They do talk about ‘Love’ as in, the shoujo manga. She also mentions that they talk about the ‘Future’ as in Iruma’s plans in school. Azazel-san went with the worse conclusion that the two are dating and are talking about marriage. XD

Ameri had to get her dad away cause he wasn’t looking too good. Haha

Iruma on the other hand was left to contemplate about the information he was given. He remembered wanting to go back to the human world before but when Clara and Azz finally appeared to go back with him to class, he realized that he doesn’t want that and now, he has another reason why he has to hide the truth about himself.

Back then, it was because he’s scared of being eaten or hurt by demons but now, it’s cause he doesn’t want to be deported back to the human world and get separated from the people he cares about. I think that’s sweet.

It’s a really nice episode. We got to see Iruma’s talk with Ameri’s dad and got to know about how the Demon World deals with humans getting stuck there. He’s not so bad and he does have very legitimate reasons why humans shouldn’t be taken there as it’s dangerous. It’s also nice to see how much Iruma came to love those world he wanted nothing to do with before.

I wasn’t able to take a pic of it but Iruma getting a rank up award was in the school papers and Azz had one of the copies laminated XD.

I also like how, even though they’re supposedly rivals, Sabro is still happy and supportive of Iruma getting awards and recognition. I like how they’re all just friends no matter what. It’s so nice!

I wonder what the next episode will be about? I can’t wait to see what’s next now that we only got a few episodes left.

So, first time ko mag year-end party as a working girl. Yas. HAHAHA

Actually sobrang saya kasi diba di naman maiiwasan yung performance. Hinati kami kasi sa tatlong group. So nabunot namin kami yung last performer.

Kung tutuusin wala talaga kaming time mag practice dahil grabe kami sa OT this december because year-end, nag hahabol lahat ng suppliers namin na masama sa payment runs yung invoices nila and closing din ng financial books. Kaya Thursday (Dec. 12) nag 30min meeting kami kung anong gagawin namin sa performance dahil syempre ang paimportante naman namin kung wala kaming gagawin. So nung una usapan sayaw nalang like typical na sayaw ganern. Until nag suggest yung isang workmate ko na parang puppet show. So ayun nag hanap kami ng medyo gagayahan sa youtube. So yun na ginawa namin kasi yung dalawang groups narining namin pare-parehas silang sasayaw so para maiba naman samin. Parang kalokohan lang e. AHAHA

Friday, first and last practice for 2hrs lang siningit lang namin sa madaming work AHAHHA kasama na din sa 2hrs yung props making and enumerating ng iba pang props. Sobrang di kami ready at all. Hindi na namin ineexpect na mananalo kami ng prize. (di na ko nag attach ng pic kasi nakakahiya itsura namin yon)

Sobrang competitive daw namin dahil may time pa kami gumawa ng props and all. AHHAHA Ang funny lang kasi kami yung nanalo din. Instant 4k din yon no. HAHA tig 500 kami. Kahit nakakahiya. okay lang.

Anyway, sobrang disappointed lang ako medyo kasi ang panget ng system ng raffle namin. Pag nabunot pwede pa ullit manalo. So yung iba naulit nanalo samantalang kami walang nakuha. Inis. :(

Character: Sora Vinsmoke (Sola Vinsmoke) Role: Bastet!Sora / Sekhmet!Sola Pet-Name: Sanji-Mama

Mossy: I was the one who wanted Sola in the fic, honestly. If we were going to have Sanji be the son of Bastet, it had to be Sora/Sola. Even if Cyriusli had said no, I would’ve insisted, I swear I wanted it to be Sola so badly. She seriously doesn’t get enough screen or panel-time. Most of our concept development happened because of the problem we encountered with Bastet/Sekhmet cat-god Sora. I like to headcanon that Sanji takes after his mama, so I used that idea in creating a little more of Sora’s design.

Cyriusli: I admit, I was a little skeptical at first, but she grew on me and I was able to find a way to incorporate her into the plot of the story. Both parent gods make appearances, but this is more about Sanji and Zoro so their roles are minor in the main story.

Mossy: Same reason I don’t really have a lot of development sketches for her. I got distracted and drew in a little baby Sanji just for interaction concept reasons...and then ended up making Zoro and Sanji baby chibis. But more on that later. XD

Cyriusli: The chibis are freaking adorable. You keep getting sidetracked and making new things and I am just sitting here like… you have 5 other things to finish first! What are you doing?!

Mossy: I’m sorry! But his wittle buttt butt wa so nyaa nyaa and I just HAD to! Besides, I’d already drawn the child!versions of them both anyway! So I was like ‘why not baby versions’!?? Ayway. I did have a little more trouble with Sola/Sora. I was like Bastet? Sekhmet? Bastet? Sekhmet? Like we mentioned before, we decided to make 2 different versions of Sola/Sora because of the differences between Egyptian North and South Kingdom cultures.

Cyriusli: Incorporating all the different points in the Egyptian lore is a little hard to juggle, but I think we are handling it fairly well at this point. And besides, we are completely inserting two beings that never even existed, combining Bastet and Sekhmet into one momma god probably isn’t the worst thing we could be doing.

Mossy: True, but I am having a little more trouble with her armor than I expected. Have one design up now ( could be another design up by the time I post this text on my character sheet for her.)

Cyriusli: Yeah and then I get to write her when we pretty much know nothing about how her character operated. I think our little twist of her “ignoring” Sanji a good portion of the time is good though because that plays into the part of Sanji missing her so much.

Mossy: I was thinking about the story Oda had about the Germa 66, where the hero, Sora, who has a telltale similar name to Sora/Sola, Sanji’s mom and how this hero defied the Germa 66 and saved North Blue. With Sekhmet being the goddess of war, I thought it was fitting she was Sanji’s mom. She could be waging war to fight for her babies back from Jaji of another culture or something, being an Egyptian god, maybe fight with the Roman or Greek god she had an affair with? LOL. Not that I’m being serious.

Cyriusli: Yeah, I don’t think that would really work and it would get too complicated. I do however see Sola fighting a lot of wars. Like maybe this is a time where Old Kingdom is crumbling and Unification is on the horizon. Sanji is located in the deep southern part of the Nile but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of fighting. There has to be… Zoro’s place at the scales tells us there is.

Mossy: Ahh, I love having Sola/Sora get to be here and be an active character! The possibilities are endless! I do love the lion look she ended up with being a fire-illusion instead of an actual lion face.

Cyriusli: Yeah! That’s pretty cool!

Mossy: It also helped with Nebit’s design, because...I mean, I’m not against anyone who’s into it, but I can’t exactly fall for anyone who has a lion for a face and a human body. Not into that. So I thought if Nebit was going to ‘take after Sola’ because of Sanji, then having her be a nekomimi would be ideal.

Cyriusli: I know that was my plan for Nebit all along. We cover her background a bit more in her sketch, but my plan for her was to look like Sanji and his mama, different than the rest of the attendants and guards that live in the palace and temple.

Mossy: As for Mama Sola/Sora (I still dunno which one to call her), I finally got my act together after moving houses and countries again and finished her design up. Though I did have a bit of trouble with the colors. Since Sanji’s got a lot of orange to his character (fire and all), I thought it was fitting to keep it in the golds and yellows. Though I did accidentally color part of her armor green at some point. The designs of her armor made me rethink the designs of her Bastet!form dress.

Cyriusli: I think her Bastet dress looks fine and I think her armor does as well. I really love the helm you made for her and her tail is pretty awesome as well, even if that isn’t exactly armor. I’m glad we got the color thing figured out though, you sent me those pics and my instant reaction was, gods, I know we are moss, but please not that. Slight color change made all the difference for badass warrior momma.

Mossy: Haha! I can’t wait to have her in the Chopper’s Comic Corner! I have a lot of Monster Hunter history under my belt (not that I was a good player, but I did manage to collect a lot of armor, so I did have to kill a lot of monsters). It’s mostly that stuff that helped me design her armor.

Cyriusli: This whole process is cool for me because I may think up armor, but I never get to see how it looks outside my head, so to see Mossy bring this stuff to life is just such a great thing to me. She makes it seem so simple, despite the hours we spend in skype screaming at one another over things lol

Mossy: Ahh yes, the screaming. There be plenty screaming. I was screaming about using turtle shells as armor for Sola’s/Sora’s skirt because well...shit  forgot my reasons. But yeah, I was screaming about that but then I realized Cyriusli was offline and I couldn’t call her about it and then I was sad.

Cyriusli: Oh no! I’m sorry. You didn’t tell me about that.

Mossy: LOL yeah I forgot. But I should ask now; did they have turtles in the nile? I mean...Sekhmet!Sola kinda has a turtle shell skirt.

Cyriusli: Yeah, they had turtles. The Nile used to be a huge ecosystem, not that it isn’t now, but it used to be bigger, I guess. So there were all sorts of animals that are typical of a water environment, including ibis, egret and the DEATH PELICANS.

Mossy: Oh thank god...they’re very orange though. Is that kinda weird? Ah. I’ll change it to the shell color. XDD I think this is about it for Sora/Sola-sama. Man I love her! I wish she showed up more in the manga, like many other women, we clearly don’t get enough of what kind of person she is other than the fact that she’s a good mother.

Namasyal kami sa isang mall tho ang dami na naming mall na napuntahan at di ko na masyado maalala ang mga ganap so eto, yung isang friend ni gf ni kuya medyo naweirduhan ako. Same kami na tatahi-tahimik pero nasa loob ang kakulitan. Nung nasa isang mall kami sa makati lagi siyang nakasunod sakin. As in nasa likod ko siya lagi. Knowing myself (wow) gawain ko na yung pag may gusto ako tignan sa mall agad agad ako pupunta doon di ko na naiintindi yung mga kasamahan ko. So ayun may pinuntahan ako yung doon sa puro notebook etc. nagtitingin tingin ako nagulat na lang ako bigla siya bumulaga sakin sa likod. At first understandable sige lang. Nung nasa bilihan kami ng damit ng mga babae kasi nagtitingin gf ni kuya, may couch doon na magtalikuran, umupo kami magkatalikuran. Nag-cclaim pa ko ng rewards ko non sa ML tapos chinichikka niya ako about random stuff, natuwa naman ako. And again, iniwan ko nanaman sila kasi may section sa floor na yun na tulad doon sa ground flr yung puro notebook. Nakita ko na sila tinatawag ako lumapit ako sakanila pag tingin ko wala siya doon, hinahanap pala ako. Instant bodyguard tuloy ang dating niya. Ganun siya lagi kapag napunta kaming mall laging nakabantay sakin and again, kebs si watashi.

Nag start lang ako maweirduhan sa kanya nung baguio trip. Bale nung papunta kasabay pa namin yung pinsan namin. Ang pwesto eh dalawang seat sa left tapos isang seat near sa door ng van; doon siya naka upo. Nung nakarating kami ng province dinrop off na namin pinsan namin kaya ang scenario na eh may isang space doon. Lumipat ako doon sa seat near the window tapos nilagay ko bag ko doon sa vacant seat kasi nahiya naman ako na alukin siya umupo doon kasi halos doon couples. Nasa harap ko couples, yung apat sa likod ko couples, kami nasa gitna awkward. Eh awkward pa naman akong tao nilagay ko na lang bag ko doon, nagpatay malisya na lang ako (sorry). So ayun na nga, nasa likod kasi yung isa kong ka close na lagi ko kinakausap. Ang weird lang kasi kapag kakausapin ko yun napapatingin ako sa likod which is sa harap ni koya. Nakikita ko sa peripheral vision ko na nakatingin siya. Nung una, again, kebs lang. Pero tinry ko siya ng maraming beses but still, nakatingin siya sakin. Kapag alam niyang titingin ako sa kanya iiwas siya ng tingin.. weird. Naging ganun ang scenario nung baguio trip namin tapos halos siya lagi nakakatabi ko ewan ko kung sadya or what. Nothing much naman nangyari natawa lang ako kasi nung kumain kami doon sa isang fast food chain eh malayo siya sakin, andoon siya sa pinakadulong table and again, kita ko sa peripheral vision kong pasulyap sulyap. Don’t mind me baka guni guni ko lang talaga to. All through out nung trip ganun pa din siya, nasa likod ko lagi nakabantay. After nung trip na yun nag friend request siya sakin. Inaccept ko naman agad tapos agad agad siya nag chat:

Nung chinat niya ko niyan gising pa ko talaga nagkunware na lang akong tulog kasi hindi ko alam irereply ko guuuurl. Hindi kasi ako sanay na may lalaking magcchat sakin ng ganyan. Kaya ko replayan yung “thank you po” pero yung succeeding chat di keri baka reply ko awkward pa nakakahiya kaya di ko na siya nireplayan tutal magkikita naman kami nasa iisang bubong lang naman kami hahaha

Last trip, EK. Sa EK naman madalas siya yung nakakatabi ko sa rides. Una ko siya nakatabi doon sa mini roller coaster etc. nung space shuttle kami di siya katabi ko nun, si isang kuya. Side note: shuta yang space shuttle na yan sinusumpa ko na yang hype na yan. Sakit ng ulo ko at nasusuka ako di ko nakayanan! Anyhoo after nung ride jusko ang sakit talaga ng ulo ko paano nakapikit lang ako all throughout kasi hilo na talaga ako doon pa lang sa up up and away na ride. Hindi talaga ako makapag isip ng maayos kasi nasusuka na talaga ako cute lang kasi inofferan niya ko ng tubig na dapat kuya ko nagoffer oh well pagong additional story lang to kasi bwisit na bwisit ako sa space shuttle na yun. Lantang gulay talaga kami after nun na napa ice cream kami ng di oras. Sa sobrang kabangagan ko natutulala ako doon sa space shuttle natutuwa lang ako kasi kapag natutulala ako tatakpan niya mata ko sa malayo sabay sabi “wag mo na tignan lalo ka lang mahihilo.” After nun nagsitayuan na sila ako bibili ng tubig para umurong suka ko. After ko bumili nakita ko na siya sa malayo inaantay ako again, patay malisya titignan ko gagawin niya. Naglakad ako nakayuko paglapit ko sa kanya hinarang niya yung paa niya doon sa dadaanan ko akala ko hahayaan niya lang ako lol. After space shuttle di ko na talaga kaya sumakay sa ibang rides. Siya gustung gusto niya sumakay sa disco magic jusko gurl hilo nanaman ako after niyan. Ayaw ko na sana kasi sa totoo lang ang sakit na talaga ng ulo ko pero pinagbigyan ko na lang bale tatlo kaming sumakay. Gurl buong ride nakapikit ako o di kaya nakatakip mata ko kasi kumikirot na talaga yung ugat ko sa ulo. After nun wa na ko energy sumakay ulit. Nagaaya pa siya sa vikings doon na ko na pa-no kasi wa na talaga. Fast forward >> papunta ulit kami sa isang mall para kumain. Ako yung nasa passenger seat gising na ko nun pero nagtutulug tulugan na lang ako ganito scenario nag uusap sila tapos magpapark na, ginigising ako ni kuya ayoko pa magising natutuwa ako nagsisisihan sila sa likod “hala ayaw na magising ano ba kasi ginawa mo” etc ang cute lang nila. Nasa mang inasal kami dito na ko na weirduhan. Kasi tinatanong niya ano order ko ako naman ilang ulit ko na sinabing PM1 nakatingin lang siya sakin as in. Eye to eye talaga so ako di nagpaka kabog nakipag eye to eye din ako. Teh, intense. Kahit nakipag eye to eye na ko hindi niya talaga inalis tingin niya buti na lang to the rescue si koya hinila siya. Kinabahan ako kasi yun na lang ulit yung time nakipag eye to eye ako sa lalaki. And again siya katabi ko. Ewan ko lang pero parang naging awkward na siya sakin after nun.

Fast forward nung pauwi na sila hindi ako nakapag paalam sa kanila ng maayos kasi ayun, puyat at usual si ate mong gurl. Ang naalala ko na lang eh may kumakaway sakin ng bye bye na naka upo kumaway din naman ako tapos natulog ulit. Nung nakarating na sila doon sa tirahan nila nagchat siya sakin. Copy paste pa nga eh. Kung ano chinat niya kay kuya ganun din akin hahaha. Basta last usap namin nun sinabihan ko siya magpahinga siya sabi niya naman andoon pa siya sa bahay nung gf ni kuya. Ang weird nga kasi may po siya lagi kaloka. End of convo na yun tapos after nun wala na.

Recently, nag upload ako ng pic (throwback pic) ko sa facebook. Ni heart react niya tapos comment niya “ang ganda ganda naman niyan 😊😍☺️” gurl nagpanic ako di ko alam kung paano magrereact! Tapos dinugtungan pa ni kuya ng “ayiiee 😍💕” lalong naging awkward naman sakin. Huhuhu ang awkward pa tuloy ng reply ko at hindi ko pa tuloy nareactan yung comment niya sa sobrang nerbyos ko kung ano sasabihin ko. Onti na lang talaga masasabi ko ng interesado sakin to.. charing! Vaklang to! Pero base kasi sa mga naging encounter namin sa isa’t isa di mo mapagkakaila eh. Ako mabilis ako makaramdam ng ganun sa tao lalo na sa iba, mabilis ko masabi kpag may gusto yung tao doon sa isa pero kapag sa case ko na, hindi ko siya masabi agad. Pero alam kong meron pero basta hahaha sakto birthday niya ngayon di ko alam paano siya babatiin. Siguro chat ko na lang hahaha

Three weeks ago, two good friends of mine passed away.

Zharmai was my first bestfriend in St. Scho. We were classmates from Grade 1-5 and we were inseparable during those times, almost literally. We were always together during break time, we were always next to each other in our lines. We had common clubs together. 

She lived in San Mateo and at that time, there weren’t any landlines yet in their area. When my dad had that ice shaver-looking cellphone, I always asked for his permission to use it so I can call Zhai. There were a few times when I got to go to their house, of course with my mom (I just can’t recall the occasion). Feeling ko kasi sobrang layo na ng bahay niya kaya paminsan-minsan lang ako makapunta. 

We kind of drifted apart in high school, probably because we didn’t belong to the same sections anymore (except in 4th year). We had different sets of friends/barkadas but we remained to be good friends. I do remember inviting her at my house when I celebrated my 14th birthday. She managed to mingle with my new barkada and we even had studio pics taken together. (We went to Robinsons Metro East after having our meal at home.) She was even the one who encouraged me to join the Glee Club on our last year (and fortunately, I was accepted, even got in the core group, represented the school in a competition, and won).

Zhai was like a perfect package of talent and wit. I can recall waiting for her in Gate 1 while she took her piano lessons across the street. She also had been associated with Glee Club ever since. And she won the graduation song writing contest (of course, we sang her song during our HS graduation). She managed to be always one of the top students in class. I remember we were 2 of the 5 students selected for a Math training or something when we were in Grade 4 or 5, haha. What the eff, nerds haha. And she was always elected as the president of her class when we were in HS. Fast forward, Zhai successfully became a lawyer and I heard she took high-profile cases. She had almost everything!

On top of that, she had been a great friend. I can’t recall a major fight that we had when we were young. We didn’t have like a pet name or something but when we grew older, we decided to call each other “poop”, I don’t know why, hahaha. Very classy, right? Hahaha. I also remember, she was our designated make-up artist in Glee Club when we were already doing the competition. And just recently, I was able to consult her for some legal stuff before she had her Euro trip.

After that trip, she got sick and eventually diagnosed with leukemia. Her doctor and family already came up with her treatment plan. Everything was like under control. She was still fine when she was confined until her throat got constricted; she had trouble breathing. She needed to be sedated so she can be intubated. She was transferred to the ICU. She had five cardiac arrests. Three days after knowing about her illness, Zhai died.

Mares was one of my kabarkadas in Kadacingko (yeah, we had that clingy phase, even naming our barkada haha.) (Kadacingko because our anniversary is November 5 hahaha, get it? We had a barkada name, a barkada notebook where we wrote to update each of us about our lives haha, and a barkada bag that each of us should use for a week). Our whole barkada was formed in our first year class (I - St. Rose of Lima). I don’t really remember the time when we just decided to hang out with each other, haha. But I do know we were all groupmates for a certain English play project. The portrayal of the life of San Lorenzo Ruiz was assigned to us and we had to have practices even on weekends. But the most memorable rehearsal we had was in Kish’s house (That was when I met my first boyfriend. Anywaaaaaayyyy...) Since then, we were always together. There’s this small mall across our school (We call it S’Mall, witty right?) and we go there just to hang out in Mcdo. Actually, we weren’t allowed to go there in our uniforms but we were badass like that. (Weird lang kasi oorder lang kami ng same food and just sit there. But that’s how we defined “tambay” that time.) 

I also remember making Mares as my “messenger”, hahahaha shet. She lived in the same village as my then-boyfriend and since we couldn’t see each other often (bawal pa kong magboyfriend that time, pasaway haha), we wrote letters to each other, what the fuck hahaha. And so I asked Mares the favor to hand my letters to him and v.v. Mares was so supportive, right? Hahaha.

Mares went to La Salle and I to ADMU in college. The whole barkada didn’t have time to see each other during these years but I do remember Mares teasing me in her Friendster testimonial that I will be her COO when she becomes the CEO/Chairman of her own company. We rarely talked to each other but she still managed to bully me hahaha (because we went to rival schools).

Mares and I weren’t really that close in the barkada. I mean, we were a lot in the group so you get to be closer to just at least one of them. Pero siya karamay ko sa mga kalokohan. I remember it was just the two of us who got ear bridge piercings but we had to remove them when we were in school because bawal. When we had our vacation in Pangasinan when Elaine went home from US, we drank liquor like it was water. We had fun caving adventures and cliff divings. She was like the epitome of YOLO x Young, Wild, and Free. She was really carefree at that time.

Then on the year of 2013, Mei, Mares, Wyn, and I went to Eastwood to hang out and have dinner. That was the time when Mares mentioned that she was feeling something bulging on her neck. We told her to have it checked. A few months after, Kish, Kish’s then-partner, Mares, and I went to have drinks. Mares was already wearing a scarf that time. The bulge became bigger and Kish (med student that time) said that it was inflammed. We didn’t think that it was a big of a deal. We were even planning our next Young, Wild, and Free session. Then she dropped the bomb a few days after. She messaged us on Twitter that she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. But she said that it’s the curable type so there’s nothing to be worried about.

Mares had this 180-degree turn in her life. She became more spiritually addicted. When I was suffering from depression in  2013-2014, she never “left” me. She was making me strong spiritually; she let me hold on to her and to God. That was when my friendship with Mares became deeper. She then invited me to join The Feast and that was when my life changed altogether. Even if she was sick, she managed to attend sessions with me, served in a couple of the ministries there. She was just too spiritually pumped up. In 2014 or early 2015, our prayers were answered; she had partial remission. 

November 2015, I was attending the Kerygma Conference and at that time, Mares just got home from her trip to Japan. She told me that she was coughing with blood. I told Kish (already a doctor at that time) about it and she said that wasn’t a good sign. It turned out that she had a relapse; her tumor became bigger, affecting her lungs. She went through chemo sessions but the tumor was really aggressive. I remember she was advised by the doctor to take another round of chemo with higher dosage of meds but she declined. She took alternative treatments; she just didn’t want to give up, she wanted to be well. Starting 2016, she was in and out of the hospital. She had several debridement operations for her chest wound. She always had difficulties in breathing. There was this time, I think that was August or September in 2017 when I visited her in the hospital with Wyn. I let her speak to Kish on the phone. Afterwards, I asked Kish about her thoughts and she gave Mares about two more months to live. She fought and stayed a bit more. That’s how strong and brave Mares was.

On the night of October 21, I got a call from Jyl, one of my Glee clubmates in HS. We haven’t talked to each other for a long time so I found it odd. She told me about Zhai and we agreed to visit her when Zhai’s condition becomes stable. After three hours, she called me again but since I was already sleeping, I missed her call. I got my phone and read a message from Mares’ ate saying that she passed away. I forgot to give a return call to Jyl because I was already grieving on Mares’ death but she messaged to tell me that Zhai also passed away. I felt like I was splashed with ice cold water on my face. I just didn’t know what to feel anymore at that time. What the fuck, really, I just lost two friends in one night?! I was like, “REALLY GOD?! WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL ME?”

And maybe the message that God was trying to relay to me was: LIVE.

Take care of your body. I realized the value of healthy eating and exercise even more. I know I owe myself and my family good health. Everything sounds cliche but it pays to have that kind of discipline. I take so much effort to undergo IF and take regular runs and workouts. As much as possible, I resist taking sodas, sweets, instant food, and fastfood. I still wanna bear a child (if God permits) and have enough strength to carry him/her. I still wanna work for my family. I need to have that same level of energy as I take more loads of work (full time + part time combined). I don't want to be a burden to my family; I don't want them to incur so much costs if I acquire a major illness. I still wanna live longer.

Take care of your heart. What happened to Mares hit our whole barkada really hard. Most of my kabarkadas are doctors and nurses and it's really difficult for us to find time to meet. And while we don't get to see each other, we drifted apart even more. It was only Mares (and her condition) that was like binding us. Then Wyn left this message in our group chat, "Give time for each other no matter what." And I totally agree. It also hit me hard as an ate and daughter because I rarely make time for my family to like really bond. I usually go out or sleep, having less interaction with them. I would reason out that my work is too tiring and that I need some time off outside or some rest. But thinking about it, why am I not making time for the very reasons why I'm working my ass off? Everything will be completely nonsense. I usually make time for my friends but I must also make sure that I spend some of my time too with my family.

Take care of your mind and soul. I was really having a depressive mood that time. On that particular Sunday, I just stayed in, didn’t serve in Sunday school and didn’t hear mass. I didn’t have the energy to give my best at work that week. But then, I was like, what the fuck?! Mares and Zhai were both struggling to breathe and live a bit longer while I was sulking in thoughts resulted from too much negative thinking, making me more depressed. I was fucking wasting my days away. More bad stuff continued to rattle me after their death. I took time to absorb and cried over them. I know people said it's okay to not be okay sometimes but I think I had too much of that already. I needed to pick myself up. I have to be mentally tough or else I may not survive another day. I went back to God, said a major apology prayer for drifting so far away from Him. I didn't have Mares anymore to share my fears so I knew I had no choice but to turn to Him again. Even though I still feel sad, I can feel that my heart is at peace because I know I made better decisions now for myself.

As they say, life's fucking tough. But I've proven so many times that I'm tougher. I can't waste another day. I have to live.
