i dont ship juliayne (juliayne shippers i do not hate you please do your thing i love you), but goddamn i want more interactions between theyre sooooo silly

ep 13: listen, i think wayne winning is fine. do i love himbos? yes. was i rooting for him in the finale? yes. in the grand scheme of things, do i think he is a good finalist? no. we can all agree that hes very much an owen, and i dont mind that!! i actually think having a fan favorite, comic relief, underdog third party winning makes sense in this season, because i dont think caleb or julia winning would be a satisfying end (especially how they were handling them by the end)

caleb's story was messy, and at the end of the day (and i know that the intentions changed), he did start his alliance with priya to use her. him winning, after all of the drama, after priya was gone, wouldve just idk felt shitty. he did get the girl in the end, which concludes his story better than him winning it. (if im comparing this to the tdi 2007 final three,, i guess hes the gwen)

as for julia, she had two seasons to be villain, and it was amazing. she is so good at what she does and she is such a joy to watch. and we all know how total drama handles its villains, they need to get their comeuppance. did bowie double cross her last season? yes. and she came back still was the main villain and was AMAZING at it. but she was still the villain for another 13 episodes, AND HER GETTING PRIYA OUT LAST EPISODE, she cant win. was her just desserts satisfying? meh. nice callback to heather (we all know julia is the heather of this comparison), though i can understand people who dont like this callback and think its tiring or something. they couldve done something else, but im not mad (i kinda fuck with the mullet). i just see no satisfying way for julia to win with how she was presented in these seasons: she was not world tour heather, with three full length seasons and a greater threat to overcome; she was island heather, and therefore could not win.

overall thoughts of the season:

im someone that thinks the hockey bros jokes nearly always land, so i enjoy the shit out of them (i think im in the majority?)

im someone that did not like priyaleb at first, grew to being more neutral about it, but still found it to be a bit tiring. i like priya, i like caleb, i dont like tiring romantic subplots, and it sucks that that was the entire thing for these characters this season

the julia mk duo was AMAZING, one of the highlights of this season and one that i never wouldve expected to be real. mkulia wins in my heart and i hope they start their podcast (JULIA WAS GOIGN TO USE THE MONEY TO START THE PODCAST WITH MK HOLY SHIT GIRL IS IN LOVE)

it sucks that certain characters really got nothing this season (millie, nichelle, emma, and even axel to an extent).. but i get that characters like millie and emma already had a lot of screentime last time and someone has to be an early boot (just realize the ones i listed off were all women,, damn the writers fr just hate women)

at the end of the day, i really enjoyed this season. and i think the most important part of that enjoyment was this was the first time i got to watch a season and have no idea what was going to unfold. i watched the first four season of total drama when they were airing, but i was a little kid with poor comprehension skills. the first three seasons aired before i knew how to read (i learned to read late). and with tdpi, rr, and tdi 2023, i watched them after the fact and knew who the winners were going in. this was the first season i watched were i truly did not know the winner, and that added to my enjoyment. not to mention this being the one and only time i was present in an online space to talk about show as the episodes dropped. this season was a bit messy here and there, but it delivered some great stuff. i found myself laughing out loud and just having a good time, which is all i need out of my silly little cartoon

Propaganda for Wayne & Raj

their biggest goal in life is to be pro hockey players together (they're been on the same hockey team since they were children) but if that doesn't pan out, they plan to become beekeepers together because "they both really like syrup." they are so clinically stupid. they think cabbages are fruit. one of them eats things in his sleep and hacks it up like a cat. one of them decided the best time to come out was while falling down the side of a mountain. they think action movies are real.

Two hockey jocks who are best friends. They are smart when it comes to hockey, but not much else. Examples: they think cabbage is a fruit and that syrup comes from bees.

these idiots i love them so much. in the first episode, they didnt know how voting someone OFF THE ISLAND worked when everyone else did. they voted for each other. they think bees make maple syrup. they get convinced that everything on tv is fake, leading them to believe THEYRE fake bc theyre on tv. wayne will apparently eat random shit in his sleep. raj immediately thinks of sports teams when certain animals are mentioned. they have so many double confessionals. theyre besties your honor

Quite literally silly himbo jocks. They fought a cassowary and lost. They voted for each other in an elimination game because they thought voting gave them safety. They sent a guy to a hospital during a tripping prank. Canonically refers to selves as "a hot dog type"

They're both just iconic!!! Firstly these two are inseparable.They do everything together!!! There:s so many amazing scenes with them. Wayne is a suped supportive ally of Raj and Bowies relationship.

They are besties and they are equally so, so silly. What really takes the cake here is that they both genuinely believe that all television shows and movies are real, and when they find out they’re not, they say “At least we can still trust wrestling. :)” They’re hockey players but, if that doesn’t work out for a career, they said they wanted to be beekeepers because they both like syrup. They lost their fake hockey beards and Wayne’s immediate response was, “Maybe I ate them in my sleep!!” And when he starts trying to hack them up, Raj just says, “Wayne’s good at this. :)” During a challenge, Raj lands in a pit of tapioca pudding and instantly assumes it’s vomit, meanwhile Wayne lands on an angry bull and asks, “Why is this cow so mad?! :(“ Wayne calls a skull a “head bone,” Raj calls cabbages “leafy balls.” They’re so supportive of one another and they’re always looking out for each other.

They are both so silly and stupid and they are adorable must watch the season they are in.

“If we don’t go pro” “which is crazy! Cause we’re totally going pro.” “That’s right. But iiiiiiif we don’t? We both really love—“ “syrup.” “So we’re gonna become beekeepers!”

Okay Imma bite since this entire thing is getting annoying as shit. god y'all just can't leave it alone.

Note: This is what I got from some Juliayne fans and why they like the pairing (regardless if its written romantically or platonically).

Another note: This was pre-season 2, so MK isn't involved. But you can still fit her in with a little bit of tweaking. It won't be that much different fron how Raj and Bowie are involved

One of them told me it could bring heaps of conflict to the table and give some nice development for the people involved. And honestly, I can see why.

Bowie and Julia are enemies, Wayne and Raj are best friends. Finding common ground in the hockey bros forces the worsties to interact again.

How would it even haopen? Well consider Julia's position. She's hated by almost the entire cast, she'll need all the help she can get, so why mot go for someone who could easily tip Bowie off his game while she's at it. Wayne being his silly goofy ahh, would think she just wants a friend.

They begin to bond, enter "defrost the ice queen trope" because Wayne is one of the very few people who doesn't have it out for her so she wouldn't need to keep her guard up around him that much, they learn a few things about each other (suxh as Wayne's hidden mean streak), yada yada yada.

RajBow eventtually catches on and then you can create some plot threads out of this. Make Raj struggle in choosing whose judgement to follow, his boyfriend whom he's onlý known for a small portion of his life, or his life-long best friend. Maybe make Wayne at one point question his actions thanks to their influence. Give closure to the Julia and Bowie rivalry, etc.

This is incredibly rough, but at least I got it off my chest now.

TLDR: Its the journey those two have to go through and the drama that comes with it as a result of their connection to RajBow.

I have a project involving the TDI reboot in the works BUT I will have to go on a liiiittle rant about season 2 first. So SPOILERS BELOW

Season 2 has really great character dynamics and challenges that make me want to like it more than season 1. Bowie and Raj being officially boyfriends. MK and Julia being an evil alliance. Ripper and Axel softening each other up. And the challenges finally aren’t just slightly different obstacle courses/races.

The problem I have is how…disjointed everything feels.

The slide challenge felt weird without Scary Girl. If she wanted to try to be normal (and fail), then she should’ve been around to see the death trap that was the four point slide. And you know she would’ve gone crazy when Damien went tumbling down.

Chase being stuck to Emma during the sap challenge would’ve been funny. Emma didn’t really do much in the sap challenge besides some slapstick with animals. So literally sticking her with her ex when she genuinely doesn’t want to give him another chance would’ve been cool.

Speaking of Emma, why was there literally no acknowledgement of her and Bowie being friends this season? Never interacted. Please you can’t do this to me I wanted closure or them to be besties again or SOMETHING

Millie would have been insane in the bridge challenge. She would’ve fallen back into her judgmental ways to figure out how everyone would answer. And maybe, just maybe, that would get people that Bowie isn’t the only evil person involved in that notebook strategy. I mean, Millie wrote that thing. Wanted to make that into a book. And compound this with Millie shoving Damien down that slide. You got a player who wants to win but goes about it in the wrong way. She’s not malicious, mind you. She just doesn’t realize that what she says or does is wrong until someone calls her out.

Caleb and Priya is a genuinely cute couple. And Caleb being a genuinely nice guy only to be framed as a Justin or Alejandro because of a misunderstanding is a neat twist. But I don’t like how the others get sidelined when Prileb becomes the focus. And when all they say about each other during the team phase is either “we’re a great alliance” or “he’s so amazing,” I kinda wanted them to hook up sooner instead of yknow HALFWAY INTO THE SEASON I mean Ripper and Axel hooked up early-

-which is a perfect transition to Ripaxel. I like how Ripper is less mean because of his crush on Axel. I like how Axel went into the game wanting the be nice. I like how sweet it was for Ripper to write a poem for Axel after finding out she loves poetry. And I actually cheered when they kissed. But then they kept kissing. And kissing. And just making out or flirting whenever they were on screen. I don’t like that that’s what their relationship became. I thought we were gonna get some more serious heart-to-heart stuff that ties back to what Ripper hinted at back in season 1. That his family sucks. And maybe Axel could sympathize with that since she’s too busy training to really connect with people. But nooooo literally throw out all their personality and backstory that’s the way to write them off.

Rapid fire for the characters that I don’t have much to say GO

Nichelle: I think it’s fitting how she quit cause she puts her career over the show. Although it could be handled better so her whole “I don’t need you, Hollywood” thing isn’t shoved down our throats

Damien: I wish he was less of a scaredy cat and more of a nerd and a straightman like he was last season. After leaving last season as a hero, you think he’d be a bit more confident at the start.

Zee: He’s at his best when he’s silly and wanting to be friends with everyone. He’s at his worst when he’s saying things he definitely shouldn’t.

And the thing that I thought was going to be the overarching plot. The cheating arc. I really thought the hockey bros were gonna struggle with this. That Chris causally dropping that he’s okay with cheating would break them or make them call foul. But nope. Now those guys are there to be silly. They are entertaining and I still love them. But I fear that they’re gonna get out of the game without leaving much of a mark on the rest of the cast. And let’s not forget the active cheaters. Ripper only cheated in one challenge. But he wasn’t in on the first two cheating schemes. Why did he want to help all of a sudden? And why not make Axel, who was upset about the cheating, be upset at her new bf for helping? Bowie got the most punishment and all we get is a confessional from Julia saying how she gaslit him out of the game? I ain’t buying it. He could’ve gotten more time to actually play fair, prove himself, and come up short. But an even earlier merge didn’t help. Speaking of. Julia and MK. I liked the initiative they took to keep winning. I liked how both of them like messing with people to get what they want. But uuuuuggghh. They really are getting away with it, huh? Just got a beat down and now they’re free of charge. And at this rate, I see one of them making finale and ultimately losing there cause oooOOooooo villains never win Total Drama. So predictable…

…so what if there was a different way to connect all these pieces together? What if I rearranged the challenge order and the elimination order to give everyone their proper amounts of growth? What if some arcs from the original season 2 get tweaked so that every character can contribute in a meaningful way? What if Priya and Julia aren’t the main good and bad guys again? What if some unresolved matters from last season are brought back? And most importantly, what if everyone treated this season like the “grudge match of the century” that Chris said it would be?

I want relationships tested

I want more morally gray moments

I want new allies to join forces and old ones to falter

I want players to go in thinking they know what they’re doing only for someone to screw everything up and make them rethink their life choices

A season with all the challenges and interactions I loved in season 2. But with different people taking charge. Different power dynamics. A fight for control over the game that’s so intense that you won’t know who the main hero or main villain is anymore. Which’ll make the journey to the finale all the more fun.

total drama alliances i would adore to see next season (because i have td brain-rot HELP). gonna put under cut 'cause there's spoilers~

nichelle + axel: is it because i ship them? yes. but more than that, i just think this pair would work so well in an alliance. they could make it so much farther if they just learned from one another. (nichelle teaches axel to cool it down a bit, acel teaches nichelle to be more confident in herself and her abilities) idc what you say, girlboss + girlfailure = success! now PLEASE let them make it to the merge this time

mk + julia AND mk + bowie: do you know how much of a serve it would be for mk to play both julia and bowies by pretending to be in an exclusive alliance with both of them? knock two of the strongest players out by playing both of them at the same time! i trust in mk's ability to outsmart smart competition. buttttt it we get one or the other of these, i also wouldn't mind.

wayne + julia: this would work best if the hockey bros are on separate teams. starts as a manipulative tactic on julia's part (as she should, truly); turns into a possible friendship? maybe even give us some more drama and have wayne find out about julia's plans AFTER they become somewhat-friends? i just wanna see wayne get mad idk; he's fun when he's a little bit snarky 🤭

caleb + julia: players who were robbed by bowie knocking bowie down from the jump would make me so mad because i adore bowie... but it would be such a good play that i'd let it slide 😭 this could potentially give caleb the characterization he lacked.

millie + ripper: i cannot stand ripper (i think if you know me, you know this by now lol) but i do think millie is quite possibly the only one who can make him somewhat tolerable. smartass + dumbass = possible win...?

millie + damien: they are so smart. they gotta win at least ONE challenge together. as long as ripper isn't there interrupting damien's sentences/explanations.........

damien + priya + scary girl: they're all "besties" now. and "besties" help each other when the competition gets tough. scary girl is going to do everything in her power to make sure priya and damien are niceeeeee and safe from everyone else except herself ofc because those are HER victims, nobody else's

raj + zee: i cannot explain why i want to see this... like i don't know what benefit they would have making an alliance. i don't even think zee is that big of a fan of alliances. tbh i just think it would be a silly alliance. and we deserve silly alliances. as a treat.

zee + scary girl: same as above, but this one is even more silly. it's maximum silly. i don't even think they'd win challenges together. but they'd bring in some humor. we deserve laughter.

same anon as before but RIGHT??? damien was set up pretty well this season like finding the immunity statue, beating bowie- hes a character most of them overlooked and ignored for both season 1 and 2, so him rising his way to the finale in the end would've been a much more satisfying ending imo. when damien said "remind me not to get on that girls bad side" abt julia i thought for sure that was setting up for the two of them to go head to head in the finale. esp when i feel like wayne hasnt done shit this season and with raj eliminated so late in the season he was given no time to develop as his own character. anyway all this to say s3 scarydamien finale PLEASE

I honestly think damien was such a fun watch this season he did so good and was finally getting the hang of the game.

I think if they really wanted a hockey bros ending or a wayne ending they shouldve tried to make him do more on his own. Like in the episode where bowie and raj paired up together without wayne it wouldve been such a golden opportunity for him to learn to do things alone. Maybe even have raj eliminated earlier to have him develop. I think in the fear episode they kinda had wayne getting the fear about raj leaving for another team as a quick way to address that little bump, but it felt kinda cheap lol. Like i think i’d be more okay w a hockey bro winning if it had been raj or if wayne had the opportunity to grow outside of raj. I do prefer him winning over caleb 100%.

I have never thought of the idea of scarydamien finalists but it would be hilarious bc i just love the idea of damien just getting stuck with scary girl anyways. Realistically speaking, i dont think fresh has much planned w scary girl lol but if wayne can win a season anything is possible lol. I would ask for maybe more of her silliness for next season, if they are even confirmed to return for it. My guess is they could probably split the campers into a group that goes into s3 and a group that doesnt much like in tda and tdwt. Which they would 100% have scary girl sit out lol.

okay but hear me out. bones/omgcp au. and yes this is a result of late-night binging of bones' first seasons BUT:

bones!jack and booth!bitty, come ON.

if jack's passion was science and not hockey he would still be the same driven, single-minded person he is, except all his focus would be on this job. he'd be kickass at being a forensic anthropologist because he'd find the whole historical cultures aspect fascinating and be really good at noticing small details and hyperfocusing on a skeleton. jack's social skills are a little rusty, though, and his main way of communicating with other people is through the language he knows: his passion. it makes other people feel like he thinks he's smarter than them.

bitty is a people person. that's like, a major part of his personality. he understands people and how they think and he connects to them easily and he's not like, religious per say, but he's definitely a lot more spiritual than jack and more open to seeing the world through less scientific eyes. he's a little all over the place, but he'd make a really good detective because he can read people really well, and because he looks nonthreatening so suspects trust him off the bat.

(he'd be terrible at getting his paperwork done on time and his desk, filled with case-related evidence, would always be a mess. it will drive jack mad.)

their work relationship would be, as in the comic and in the show, a little rocky to start with. jack gives bitty the impression that he finds him silly and somewhat dumb, and bitty gives jack the impression that he sees him more as a bones-robot than another person. but jack is the best there is, and bitty has the same determination as his canonical self to prove he deserves his position, so they stick it out. for justice. as they get to know each other they realize their first impressions were wrong - both their assessment of their partner and their assumptions of what their partner thinks of them.

mad scientist shitty??? who comes from a rich, pretentious family and hates them all and doesn't want the team to know his family funds the institution they work for because he just wants to be shitty. he probably got a degree in something his parents approved of, like biochemistry or physics or something like that, and then snapped and decided to get a phd in something they definitely won't approve of, like entomology and botany. shitty loves being the slime and bugs guy, and he loves helping to find evil motherfuckers and bring them down even more.

lardo was getting her art degree when jack met her while giving a gust lecture. he watched her work on a life sized painting of a hyperrealist adult male and was so impressed with her anatomical accuracy that he struck up a conversation (this doesn't happen very often). lardo wasn't exactly getting an art degree to work on three-dimensional skeletal reconstructions but, you know, a) it's a paying job, b) she kinda finds the whole murder-solving thing morbidly cool, c) she likes jack. she thinks jack is a good dude who is going to need good bros around him. and getting to work with state of the art equipment is definitely a bonus.

ransom, holster and the frogs are still up for debate. but I kind of see ransom in cam's position, maybe - having went to medical school, ended up as a medical examiner, and now running the lab. holster has that manic fbi agent vibes on him. dex is a scientist if I ever saw one - maybe one of the squints?

as requested, i am now considering figure skater au. would love to hear more thoughts on said au 👀

ohohoho 👀 let me absolutely indulge you on my nonsense

so i do have a sketch page with this au but i'll briefly summarize it here:

- nick is a hockey player for kingston lions and seiji is an olympic level figure skater

- they both use the same rink at kingston, and this ofc is where our conflict arises

- seiji frankly believes that nick's team is terrible since they have won 0 championships and calls nick "zero". because of this, he often begins his own practice early or lets it run late -- cutting into the hockey team's time reservation

- nick has tried numerous times to get the staff to do something but like, tf are they gonna do? seiji is olympic level and they don't wanna be the idiots who denied seiji his practice space and loose revenue (tho it should be noted that seiji is competing for the grand prix in this one -- not the olympics). so nick begins calling seiji "princess" since he's a giant brat :)

- the two don't get along at all -- and i mean at all. they're livid whenever they run into each other and are at each other's throats

- however, coach williams thinks she can get the boys to the connecticut state championships. since nick is the center (position that plays both offensive and defensive), she calls in a favor with dmytro and asks him to work with nick on his form so he can be extra speedy fast.

- guess who dmytro also coaches? that's right. seiji :)))

- they both find this out when dmytro introduces the two and says he doesn't have time to be coaching them separately. they are pissed to say the least (when nick complains to williams, she makes him do suicides which stops him from complaining anymore).

- couple weeks pass, seiji and nick are still not happy but they just barely manage to exist on the same ice. the kingston lions have their first game soon and seiji has first set of qualifying competitions to get through. the hockey team is getting their full practices in, and seiji just goes for some extra practice after they finish up -- despite the ice not being smooth enough for his liking.

- one evening, nick stayed later to sharpen his skates using the rink's equipment. as he exits the locker room though, he hears the sound of skates against ice and assumes that it can only be seiji, so he decides to sneak a peek. he's only seen portions of seiji's routine since he's super secretive about it.

- and his routine is absolutely gorgeous. nick's jaw hangs open the whole time, and he can't deny that seiji really is a talented skater. like he's never really given a shit about the sport, but he can see seiji's passion for it with every turn and contouring of his body. his face too, usually scrunched up in one of displeasure or superiority, was lax and blissful.

- nick disappears quietly, seiji being none the wiser, and he goes home haunted by the images of seiji dancing and realizing that this giant prick is actually kind of beautiful.

- fast forward a week and nick has his first game. seiji is pissy bc it means that he won't get his evening practice, and nick makes the snap decision to invite seiji to his game. they're both surprised by it -- perhaps even more so when seiji accepts with a sneer. if only to prove his point that the lions are terrible.

- few hours later and seiji is in the stands: displeased at being jostled around so much by so many fans (which he is surprised that the kingston lions even have), but settles in to watch the game.

- nick is a speed monster on the ice, dmytro's coaching clearly having paid off, and the lions take home a 6-2 victory. and seiji isn't sure why, but for some odd reason, zero looks almost handome (in a rugged way) under the stadium lights with his wide smile and excited cheering with his teammates.

- he also goes home thinking of someone he was sure he would only think thoughts of malice of.

- another week passes by and seiji's first competition comes up. by some stroke of uncharacteristic brashness, he invites nick to come watch it. he fully accepts nick to reject the invitation, but surprisingly nick does accept it.

- seiji competes, places first, and nick sees the whole thing. even got seiji a bouquet of congratulatory roses and daphnes ("figured you'd win, princess. after all, there has to be some talent underneath that bratty and stuck-up personality of yours.").

- seiji immediately puts the flowers in water when he gets home -- if only to not let a gorgeous gift go to waste (he absolutely does not press a rose and a few daphnes when they start to wilt, not at all).

- more time goes on, the lions make it to the playoffs and seiji is preparing for the first competition of the grand prix series. the two of them are sort of warmed up to each other? def not best buddies, but they're not trying to tear each other's throats out with their skates. nick has been sneaking glances at seiji skating during that time -- his favorite time is during the evening when it seems that seiji skates for himself. seiji on the other hand, has gone to almost to every single one of nick's games without nick being aware of it.

- however, the plot must to go on, and seiji catches nick during one of those evenings nick stayed behind to watch seiji. nick fully expects seiji to blow up at him -- and for them to loose what tedious progress they had made -- but instead he gets an extremely rare blush out of the skater.

- for the sake of time, seiji is skating a different routine after hours and after being pressed about it, he reveals it is about a certain someone who he definitely likes a little more than just an acquaintance. and it's a routine he choreographed himself.

- nick's a bit "woah holy crap" with this information and it does pester his mind for a bit, wondering who tf this person is. but he does say that it's prob his fav routine of seiji's to watch (which proceeds to pester seiji's brain).

- then we get to the playoffs. the score is 7-7 and there's two minutes left on the clock. nick makes a final push through his stamina and get the last goal right before the clock strikes 0 -- making the score 8-7. however, nick falls on his arm, hard.

- nick breaks his arm, and he's out for the rest of the season. nick is obviously very, very upset about it.

- seiji does visit nick in the hospital before he hops on a plane to the grand prix final (since he made it there whee), and explains he saw what happened since he was there. nick interprets the visit as an act of petty charity and lashes out, taking out his anger and frustration on seiji.

- seiji lashes right back, and the two exchange some pretty hurtful blows. the thing that's important to take away is that nick essentially says that seiji's success as a skater only rests on the choreography of dmytro and his coaching. seiji storms out in a rage, and nick is left feeling like shit.

- a few days later, nick realizes that it's the free skate day of the finals and turns on the tv to the channel -- accepting that the reason he feels like shit is bc he misses seiji's skating.

- however, seiji's free skate is apparently very different from what was expected of him according to the announcers -- but nick recognizes it. it's the same routine that seiji does in his evening practices.

- seiji does place first and wins the grand prix finals (which he previously lost bc of a certain blond skater but that's a plot line for another time). nick realizes that he has to apologize, even if seiji said some nasty things, but what he said was seriously a d*ck thing to say.

- few days later, nick is discharged, and he spends every evening in the rink, waiting on the benches for seiji. who does eventually come after the grand prix final celebrations and resting for a few days. he decides to go for a quick evening skate to clear his mind of a certain hockey player.

- upon seeing nick, seiji is filled with rage and he gives nick the cold shoulder. whenever nick calls for him from across the rink, seiji pretends not to hear him. until eventually, nick decides to take matters in his own hands and make his way across the ice in his sneakers.

- obviously, this idea goes terribly, and he does fall a few feet away from seiji, who finally stops to give him the attention he's been asking for -- fully expecting an argument.

- nick apologizes for what he said and how wrong he was for saying it. he also mentions how lucky the person the routine is for must be. seiji is flabbergasted, not expecting this at all, and reveals that the routine was for nick, all this time. now it's nick's turn to be flabbergasted af :)

- nick starts laughing, which makes seiji extremely confused bc why tf is nick laughing since he was expecting rejection. but nick merely coaxes seiji down and kisses him softly -- and seiji understands.

- the lions do withdraw from the championship since nick is out of commission. they return the next season and do win first in a complete underdog fashion in case anyone is curious. seiji places first in the olympic figure skating event because he's seiji.

and just some other silly notes:

- eugesse is something that happens in this (much to nick's dismay)

- jesse and nick are half-brothers but they find that out down the line

- the lions are composited of the weight lifting bros and the one friend from nick's junior high who remains unnamed

Okay, in my google also stumbled on nhl individual records, and- most blocked shots in one season, apparently 14-15 flames was not a great season, idk.

Yes, they’re very good friends! I know I find it hard to keep track of which historical players are which sometimes, because Hockey Stat Bros toss names and numbers around in isolation, which seems silly in a sport that has such great pairings and relationships. So some context:

The Red Wings were really bad in the ‘70s. They drafted Steve Yzerman in 1983, despite not really wanting him. He was kinda small, and they wanted what someone else got first, which I believe is the Red Wings’ motto. They planned to send him down to the AHL to see if he’d grow any more, but he was a workout freak before Rod the Bod and after training camp they were too scared not to let him into the league. He turned out to be very good, the first 18 year-old rookie All Star, and they made him captain.

(Russian players today still have military duty, which is...selectively enforced, but unlike Malkin’s story, in the ‘80s players might be shot for desertion.)

But in 1989, one of Sergei’s young friends and four of the Red Army’s most veteran players defected to the US after a series of trials and tribulations and declarations of love in the rain**. That made Detroit willing to take the risk of drafting Sergei and one of his teammates that summer.

Problem was Sergei had no idea what a Red Wing was or where to find one. He did know what a Steve Yzerman was, from international tournaments. He was five years younger, and a big fan. The Red Wings recruited journalist Keith Gave (who later wrote the book about it) to slip him a secret letter, which Gave hid in a handy booklet explaining the team. Sergei responded, and the Red Wings sent him another pamphlet which contained more deets on Stevie and a Corvette catalogue.

We don’t know that this picture was in there, but we don’t know it wasn’t either

Sergei was like, ‘sweet, but I would like to wait until I finish my service next year because of the shooting thing,’ and then the Army decided to extend his service, because armies can do that.

At that point someone hunted Stevie down in the gym to check if this all was worth it, and he looked up from his exercise bike to tell them, “Oh yeah, he’s better than me,” so they kept at it.

In July of 1990 Sergei’s team came to the US for a tournament. He insisted on playing the tournament, and then ran out and hopped in a Red Wing official’s car to drive off. He was alone as a Russian in America and would be for a few more years. He spent that summer at the pool, working out, making ‘90s health food, and wheedling the Red Wings to let him into the rink to work out more.

When the season finally started, he made sure the equipment manager, Mark Brennan, reserved a certain jersey: #91. Yzerman wore #19. Brennan says, “He told me he wanted ‘to be like Stevie.’”

Yzerman, who was infamously bad at taking compliments, responded to that by calling Sergei casual and chill things like, “Best skater I’ve ever seen,”

“In my opinion, he's the best player in the League. He is different than Wayne and Mario,”

and “Sergei is a game-breaker for us anytime he's on the ice ... He's the most talented player I've ever seen."

By the end they played 13 seasons and won 3 Stanley Cups together.

My How I Met Your Mother Thoughts

I just spent the last nine seasons in New York with the gang that spends all their time in MacLaren’s Pub. SELF FIVE! I have to say, this binge of How I Met Your Mother brought me so much happiness. I started watching this show for the first time back in high school, and I ended up watching the last six seasons as they aired. I remember loving this group of characters, and now I am reminded why. There’s so much chemistry between the five, and it makes for one of my favorite Comedies/Sitcoms of all time. If you’ve read any of my previous Show Thoughts, then you know I’ve been watching several over the course of this lovely Pandemic That Will Just Keep Going. After this rewatch, I’ve decided HIMYM is my third favorite Comedy/Sitcom, right after Boy Meets World and Scrubs.

Now, I know that the Finale is infamous. It’s in the Mount Rushmore of Terrible Endings, and people end up getting a sour taste in their mouth when they bring up the show. Well, it’s been some years. There’s been time to reflect and look back. And, while I’m not in favor of the Finale, I also don’t hate it anymore with the passion of a thousand suns. I just loved watching and growing with the gang, seeing them experience their highs and their lows, their triumphs and their failures. It just hits harder as an adult, like most of these shows assuredly do, and I cherish so many of these episodes and moments.

And now, just some thoughts on the show and on the gang!

Ted - I know people don’t like Ted. I don’t actually like Ted all that much. And yet, I found myself rooting for Ted just like I did the first go around. He’s not the worst person in the world, and I would be scared to see half of the decisions we’ve made in the dating game stringed together into a TV show. I know people wouldn’t like me very much for those decisions. Then again, I also don’t get super crazy about details about buildings, I don’t pronounce encyclopedia that way, and he tends to stick his foot in his mouth with this White Man confidence that I just don’t have. With all that being said, I still find Ted being a great friend, a man who is just trying to find the love of his life, and someone who really drives this story with great tales and narration (Bob Saget is the Sixth Man of the Show for just always bringing it). I think Ted does stupid things and he pretty much admits it after the fact. He learns, sometimes, and also doesn’t much like most of us. When he finally found the Mother, when he finally found Tracy, I cared. I cared so much, and I still do. Even though they just shit on her character and don’t give us enough time with her, I almost wonder if that’s a metaphor for the fact that you won’t always have enough time with your loved ones.

Robin - Let’s go to the mall! Yeah! Robin Sparkles is a Canadian Treasure, and so is Robin Scherbatsky. She is one of the best things about this show, and I love her so. Played by Cobie Smulders who I need to see in more stuff, Robin is who we all wanted Ted to maybe be with first. Then we go through all the loops of the HIMYM roller coaster, and a lot of us still wanted them to be together. I was one of them. Yet, she was more than just a romantic plot line for Ted. She was a part of the group who we got to see join it and evolve into a member of their family organically. Robin is fun, loud, full of fun quirks that we get to learn over the course of the series. I was heartbroken when we found out she can’t have children. I was loving the back and forth between her and Barney (the first time), and kind of mad at Barney about being such a crazy ass prankster the second time. Robin shows us just how amazing some gun loving, hockey obsessed Canadian news anchor can be, and how much she cares for her friends.

Lily - Justice Aldrin ends up being one of my favorite characters, even if that gets some curious looks. Yeah, she left Marshall for a summer. Yeah, she had some hesitancy with the marriage and everything. That happens. Lily was also always there for her friends, even if she ends up going a little overboard. She wants Ted to find happiness, and does whatever she can to help. She is there to listen to Robin at all times, and her and Marshall are easily one of the best relationships in TV I’ve ever witnessed. Then we have Lily and Barney which is honestly super underrated. Barney trusts Lily, even though she can’t keep a secret, with all of his emotional problems. Lily is who thought Barney could change before anyone else, and I love seeing their friendship grow from eye rolls to eye tears.

Barney - Oh, Barney. He honestly brings so much annoyance and fun to the show. He’s the friend of the gang who everyone tolerates. He’s the one in the gang who everyone ends up loving just as much as everyone else. Barney shows such a terrible face to the world, sleeping with over 250 women and lying to most of them. He has all these rules that aren’t very ethical. He gives us most of the Misogynism in this show, which is definitely prevalent and makes the show not as strong as it was in the first watch. Still, we get to see Barney grow into someone who wants real love and a happy life. Sure, they show us that his marriage to Robin only lasts three years, but at least they tried. Barney just couldn’t make it work, and that’s honestly who Barney really is. A person who just enjoys sleeping with different people. I was very warmed to see the baby reveal and that Barney becoming a dad was what would change him more than anything. Barney is an underrated friend, and his importance to the gang is legendary.

Marshall - I. Love. Big Fudge. He’s just so fun, caring, goofy, loyal, and everything that I aspire to be in life. For some reason, when watching the show the first time, I related to Ted the most. I was definitely a bit more selfish then. But now, I see that I am a Marshall. He wants to do good in the world, and it drives him so much. He only loves Lily, and his loyalty to their relationship is just Goals. He is also the most fun to watch having a crisis. He gets the big eyes and covers his mouth and just gets obviously super uncomfortable. Some of my favorite moments of the show are also Marshall’s talks with Ted about his feelings for Robin. Any one-on-ones with Marshall and someone else are probably my favorite moments. And yes, I will always root for him over those damn machines!

Last Thoughts:

Sure, the writing wasn’t as sharp or as witty in the later seasons, but I loved the story lines and seeing the gang just live.

Tracy was an amazing character as The Mother, and I truly wonder what could have been if they had given us two full seasons of story with her instead of any episodes of Jeannette.

I really can’t believe Ted told his kids all those stories. A fun premise for a show, but really, not very realistic telling them all that jazz.

Ranjit and Carl are such fun recurring characters that I always enjoyed seeing every time they popped up.

Out of all the recurring jokes and gags, which there are many (y’all said Community has so many, but HIMYM really swings for it), I love the Major/General salute joke. Idk if I just didn’t care for it the first time around or forgot about it, but I just love how silly it is and how they kept it through to the very last episode.

Watching the gang sit at their table in MacLaren’s just hanging out will always make me smile.

What do you like most about your own writing?

I already talked about dialogue. I think (though it feels weird to say) that I’m decent with humor? Like, it makes me laugh, but I’m unfairly biased in my own favor. And for not actually being a bro, I think I do okay with portraying bros, in hockey or otherwise.

I do put a lot of thought into sensory descriptions, especially if I’m trying to lean “show don’t tell.” This is more successful in some of my writing than in other pieces.

Choose three adjectives to complement your own writing.

...I’m genuinely not sure how to answer this. I’m gonna go with ‘affectionate’ (because my angst always has to have a happy ending), ‘silly’, (because I fucking love writing about wacky hijinks), and ‘intricate’ (because sentence structure is a fascinating thing to me, and I like messing about with it, even though this is sometimes to my writing’s detriment.)

I've been adding to the sequel to "whatever happened to all this season's losers of the year" for a while, even though a decent chunk of the characters involved aren't with the Caps anymore. Hopefully I finish it before end of 2021. Beneath the cut-- sorry for anyone on mobile!

The phone is ringing. It's fuck o'clock in the morning, or maybe half past fuck knows when, and the phone is ringing. Alex blindly flails his arm in several directions and encounters Nicky, the headboard, the bedside table, the tissue box on his bedside table, Nicky again, a book about the history of coffee that Nicky is reading and passive-aggressively leaving on Ovi's side of the bed more times than can be a coincidence, Alex's (fortunately empty) tea mug that he's been passive-aggressively leaving on top of the book about coffee that Nicky is passive-aggressively leaving on his side of the bed, Nicky again, and then by pure accidental luck, his actual phone.

His fumbling makes the screen light up, and Alex automatically screws his eyes shut in response to the painful brightness. He puts the phone up against the side of his face and says, "Privyegmph?" or something close to it, and then he grunts in pain when Nicky rolls over and kicks him in the process in a way that is not at all accidental.

He doesn't hear anything at first, just breathing. Then there's another rustling sound that he can't quite identify in his sleep-muddled state, and then the breathing gets louder and the noises change to something slightly more familiar but still hovering beyond the edge of his recognition. Alex lies there in sleepy confusion and listens as the breathing gets heavier and more raggedy, broken up by little grunting noises every now and again. And then—

"Holts," someone very clearly and very definitely whimpers into the phone. Alex's eyes fly open and he sits up in bed so fast that he gives himself a charley-horse and loses his phone in the process, flailing and trying to both recover it from the sheets and also punch the muscle in the back of his thigh into submission. He gropes for it with one hand (and finds Nicky one more time, so the groping's successful on more than one front), and kneads his leg with the other, and by the time he has his phone back, he's more awake than not. Squinting, he manages to open his eyes enough to look at the phone's screen and figure out who's calling him, though really, he probably should have known.

Somewhere deep in Alex's subconscious, a counter that reads We Have Been Stupid Baby Teammate Dumbass-Incident Free for 23 Days! shivers, freezes, and then flips over to zero.

Alex swings both legs over the side of the bed and stumbles his way to the bathroom, phone in hand and half-blind. He doesn't bother to turn the lights on, just closes the door. Sitting down heavily on the toilet seat, he looks at his phone again, and then lifts it up. The panting and noises are still going on.

Alex sighs, and hopes he'll at least get free Starbucks out of this again.

"Burky, it's me, not Holts. You dial wrong number again," he says into the phone, and yawns.

There is sudden silence, and then a strangled noise that Alex interprets as the collateral damage from Burky's brain and dick fighting it out for ownership of the majority of his body's blood flow. He can practically hear all of Burky's systems locking up, blue-screening, and then rebooting.

"Ovi?" Burky finally says through the phone.

"Yeah, hi," Alex says and yawns again. "Sorry. You lose boner?"

"Uh," Burky says, which either means he has and he doesn't know how to say that without insulting Alex directly, or he hasn't and he's awkwardly trying to not tell Alex about it, and either way, Alex probably doesn't want to know. "Er. Eh."

"Sorry," Alex repeats, and then frowns. "No. Fuck. Not sorry. You wake me up with sex call for someone else, you apologize to me."

i have decided that they should have like a sitcom where adrian & oskar are neighbours and willy is their new neighbour. they have a fun meet cute in the mail room & adrian & oskar both are like I Will Seduce The New Neighbour and the show is full of their silly attempts while willy wanders around clueless. the season finale *spoilers!!* ends with them ALL dating

heres the sitch willy is a high school hockey STAR but he’s failing drama or something. this is maybe an episode of life with derek. david is the NEW EXCHANGE KID who accidentally signs himself up for the school play. they are cast as ROMEO AND JULIET. it is the best even though willy forgets his lines and after the show they make out at the cast party 

while the vibe of this pic is very Handsum Suit Men the vibe of willy/goat is extremely tall big man freddie puts willy in his pocket while he gardens. i think willy is like a cat in the sunlight just basking around and sometimes surfacing to rub his face on goat’s knee and ask for attention. goat makes them a salad straight from his garden for dinner and then they watch HGTV until they fall asleep

the vibe of willy/kappy is always just so like “accidentally touched ur dick bro oh whoops now im giving u a blow job whoops broooo” so i feel like they get to be side characters in a television drama. like kappys neighbour is Going Through Stuff & every once and awhile, for comic relief, the character sees the two of them like dunking each other in a pool or walking down the hallway at school with their arms around each other. they never like. Get It. always just like “i love u bro” “bro i love YOU”

on the other hand zach and willy are ALL rom coms. willy pines after zach in every single iteration of them on screen. are they 27 dresses??? willy who’s always the bridesmaid never the bride and zach who is the journalist who falls for them???? is willy disaster bridget jones and zach is standoffish colin firth???? all of the above but think, if you will - zach as gabriella montez, new smart kid, and willy as troy bolton, basketball star

willy/nicke.......i mean. they just scream regency. its all very Willy Sent Away To Finishing School, comes back and marries the earl whatsit who is nicke. nicke knew the nylanders and always got along with lil william & it would be weird but its the OLDEN TIMES so marrying someone much younger than u is fine or whatever. god the 2017 world championship huh????

HEY SPEAKING OF MORALLY GREY RELATIONSHIPS u know this video ive watched 18 times and theres a lot of heart eyes all around. my favourite thing to think about is a sorta matt santos west wing au where kyles running for president i guess and willys the waiter that hooked up with him awhile ago who’s along for the ride. they kinda fell into this relationship and now GASP its all a scandal and kyle’s having to run for president while also maintain his relationship with Known Cutie Will Nye while willy has to like. u know in what a girl wants when amanda bynes has to learn how to be a socialite? its like that in a montage.

having a full on existential crisis over an episode of anime i watched tonight

it all started with big time rush

in 2009 a sitcom called big time rush aired for the first time on nickelodeon; it was about a group of four teenaged boys from minnesota who move to hollywood under a famous producer to become his next big boy band sensation. a simple premise, launched into unprecedented success, resulting in four seasons of musical shenanigans, three full music albums, and three big concert tours, including international shows. the band, both fictional and real life, featured four attractive young men by the names of kendall, james, carlos, and logan. they quickly gained a fan base of mostly teenage girls, which resulted in online spaces created for the purpose of sharing their passion, and as is common in such online communities, this certainly involved fanfiction- lots of it.

enter me, a teen in high school who loved to write fanfiction. my big time journey began the day my younger sister decided to put on the show big time rush in the living room, where i sat at the family computer typing away. the noise caught my attention, and i got sucked into the episode. there was a boy wearing a dress on the screen. i became interested.

i watched more of the show. i typed its name into the search bar on the website fanfiction dot net. i had a friend at school who shared my interest in fanfiction, particularly of the slash variety. i introduced her to this new show i had been watching. she shared a fanfic she had enjoyed immensely with me. we dragged each other into the world of big time rush fanfiction reading and writing.

it took over my life; i lived and breathed big time rush. i began posting my own stories to fanfiction dot net. i received positive feedback; i met people. i made friends- two people in particular who became very close friends. we communicated through ffn’s private messaging system, then through email. we talked every day, we wrote stories for and with each other, we exchanged phone numbers. it was one of these friends who introduced me to the website called tumblr, where fellow fans of our beloved big time rush gathered and talked about it- a community.

it was a slow start- this website was new and unfamiliar to me- but eventually i got the hang of things and settled into my niche. i had fun, gained followers, met even more people. tumblr was a place not only for sharing one singular interest, but for accumulating all of your various interests and celebrating them in one place. it was through this aspect that i first learned of the up and coming band known as one direction.

they had released their first smash hit single and everyone was talking about it. i was wary, far too loyal to my beloved big time rush- but eventually i started to feel left out and in an effort to feel included, i decided to take the plunge and see what this “1d” was all about. it was intimidating, though- there was so much information, and no apparent beginner’s guide to tell me where to start. this drove me to making a post calling for a “one direction buddy” to take this role, to introduce me to all the most important aspects of this band. and my call was answered.

enter my wonderful friend cam, a follower of mine at the time. they were into both big time rush and one direction and were eager to provide me with all the information needed to get into 1d. while ultimately this venture didn’t amount to anything, as i lost interest in becoming a fan, my friendship with cam persisted and we grew very close. even as time went on and big time rush faded into the background to be replaced with newer, fresher interests, and our paths as fellow fandom members split, we kept in contact and remained friends. years and years of fandoms, years and years of friendship.

in the midst of the tenth year, cam developed a new interest, in a sport called ice hockey. as is tradition, they shared their passion with me, showing me their favorite team, highlighting their favorite members. we watched a game together. personally, i’ve never been one for sports, but i am quite into anime, which consists of many genres, including the “sports” genre. one in particular that i’ve enjoyed immensely in the past is the volleyball anime, haikyuu!!. this anime devotes a lot of time to explaining and depicting the sport in a way that makes it easy for any viewer to understand the rules and inner workings of volleyball. it’s exciting. it’s the first time i’ve ever even adjacently been invested in a sport. one could even call it a gateway into the world of sports.

all this to say, when i watched that game of ice hockey with cam, the same parts of my brain that loved haikyuu!! lit up and in a classic display of my specific brand of interest, i found myself yearning for the epic highs and lows of ice hockey, but in an animated format. an animated format originating in japan. a japanese animation. an anime. my curiosity burned a hole in my brain that resulted in a combination of the google search bar and the words, “hockey anime”.

to my disappointment, i found nothing- at least, not to the degree i was hoping. there is an upcoming anime, slated to air in the fall 2021 anime season, about a group of girls who form an ice hockey team together- as it is an original project rather than an adaptation, it remains to be seen whether the anime will fall into the category of “sports anime,” or if indeed it will lean much more closely to the “moe” genre. the latter is not what i had in mind during that particular search.

adding the anime called “pride of orange” to my “plan to watch” list on myanimelist dot com, i moved onto the next result: an article about an early 2010’s anime i had never heard of before. while not about the sport i was looking for, it featured a character whose signature weapon was a field hockey stick. it wasn’t even the right sport. it was a weak, insignificant link, but all was not lost.

i happen to have an affinity for watching anime i happen upon completely by random and know little to nothing about; i found the movie “anthem of the heart” purely coincidentally, when i searched the name “jun” as part of some research for one of my original characters and discovered that it was the main character of said movie, which i then watched and ended up enjoying quite a lot. another time, when i was at best buy one day i happened upon a dvd on their dedicated anime shelf for a movie called “hana and alice”, which i had never heard of before. i liked the box art, so i took a picture of it to remember the title and watched it on my own later that week; it became one of my favorite movies.

with these and other similar experiences in mind, i saved the anime in my “plan to watch” list, and, later that same week, began my watch of “sket dance.”

it’s a school comedy anime, one of my favorite genres, so it’s no surprise that after overcoming the initial skepticism i carry into every new show i watch it quickly became my new fixation. not an obsession, but something i was pleasantly surprised to find consistently enjoyable. the characters are fun, the humor is tight and fresh, and the stories are unexpectedly touching at the right moments. everything i like to see.

which brings us to tonight. the culmination of this ten plus year string of events and occurrences. getting into big time rush. joining tumblr. meeting cam. watching anime. searching for hockey anime.

i put down my apple(TM) pencil. i set my ipad aside. i downsized the ebook window i’d been referencing. i stretched; i was hungry and tired. i’d been rereading passages of various animorphs books all day. i needed a break. i needed to sit back with some food and an episode of my latest comfort watch, sket dance. it’d be nice to set the dramatic, tragic world of animorphs aside for something lighthearted and fun in its place.

well.

i sat down with my bowl of strawberries and played the episode. it finished. i watched another. this one broke the formula a bit, played with the art style. i was into it. the preview for the next episode was mysteriously blank, and short, stating only the title. it was intriguing. i’m down for the show to get a bit more serious for an episode, i thought. i’m down for some potential backstory for one of the main three. i’m ready.

i was not ready.

next two episodes proceeded to take me out back and beat me to within an inch of my life, slowly at first and then all at once. barely made it out alive. questioning everything. how can a show, so silly and goofy, do that, to me. how could i let my guard down like that. how could i be so tricked, and deceived, and blindsided like this. i don’t know who to trust. i don’t know if i can trust again. whiplash so damaging, permanent. i thought i wanted answers. i thought i wanted to know backstory. i didn’t want this. i never wanted this. emptiness

how did it come to this, these twelve years of my life. had i known back then, would i have posted that fanfiction? would i have joined tumblr? would i have sook out a “one direction buddy”? a hollow husk of a person, i am left with only my thoughts to ponder this small history of mine. the things i could have done differently. the things others could have done differently. all these butterfly effect moments, adding up to what? culminating in what? it’s 2:26 am and i’m writing an essay on how shook i am over that episode instead of going to sleep. but i can’t just say nothing, you know? i need to put something out there, reach deep enough within myself to find the thing that’s still there, broken and huddled and tiny as it is. i need to feel some semblance of the self again. the me from before i watched this episode. the innocent version of myself, blissful in ignorance. it’s too late now.
