As I walked by, I saw the pups had got into the pen and were harrying the bull.” “You faced down a mad bull for a handful of dogs?”

Find The Word

The lovely @heniareth tagged me to find the 'fish,' 'follow,' 'stay,' and 'light' in my WIPs and omg you enabled my weakness for Declan. I did not have fish in any of my WIPs but I wrote a scene just because of it lol So here are a few snippets from my Merry Band of Wardens series.

Fish

Declan was too tired for this. He peered at the contents. “What’s this?”

“Porridge.” Declan supposed the lumpy mess might be called porridge, if porridge was having a very bad day. He prodded at it with a finger. It jiggled in a way food shouldn’t and smelled distinctly fishy. Declan hated fish. “I think I’ll pass.”

Alistair’s earnest-but-stupid face fell. “But I used the special recipe.”

“Special recipe?”

Alistair nodded. “It’s the exact kind of porridge you get in Orzammar. Amos said you'd love. It was just lucky we had everything in the camp.”

Declan smelled a rat. “Remind me what’s in here again? Just so I can be sure it’s proper Dwarven Porridge.”

“Oats, honey, cinnamon…” Alistair recited, as Declan nodded along. “And of course, the dried eel,” he added, and Declan’s stomach dropped. “He said it's what Dwarven royalty is raised on, and that you’d love every bite.”

Declan noticed Amos watching them, smirking, and it fell into place. He should have known the little shit would try and get him back for all the nug jokes.

Follow

Connor tore more vines free, enough for them to climb through easily, and ventured inside. The twisting staircase beckoned.

Declan climbed through. His shirt got hung up on a splintered piece of wood. With a grunt, he tugged it free. “Life with the Wardens is ruining my wardrobe.” Connor snorted, waited for Assana to join them, and followed the elf downward.

The deeper they went, the harder the cold air nipped at his fingers and face. The stairs ended in a narrow section of stone tunnel. Darkness gnawed at the torchlight’s fringes. Assana moved on, keeping the torch high, pushing the dark back.

Stay

Somehow the mabari’s home was in his tent now. Back Up invariably crept into his tent to nap and when he tried to shoo her back to Connor, Back Up turned sad brown eyes on him and whined pitifully until he gave in and let her stay. Declan could swear he was being played by the mabari, but he didn’t mind much.

Light

Declan’s stomach grumbled, but nobody made any move for the provisions, and so he wondered exactly how much they had left. It was probably best not to bring it up for now. He’d hope for a decent meal at dinnertime.

“I suspect we have a rough afternoon ahead of us,” Declan said in an undertone. Amos nodded in agreement, and something about the movement, the light arch of his neck, made a faint tendril of want bloom in Declan’s belly. He squashed it down ruthlessly, unprepared to deal with it.
