“Come on, we don’t want to be late do we?” tugging your best friend's hand towards the door you wondered how Jungkook would react if you were to be a little late to the wedding, would you get to see him annoyed like the first time you met him just before he recognized you? You hoped you’d get to see that side of him again, liking it more than you cared to admit. Pushing your thoughts to the back of your mind you got into the passenger seat of Tae’s Bentley, it was his proudest possession to date. You were happy that your best friend's hard work had paid off enough that he could afford something like this, plus for the two of you to live in an upscale apartment. Of course the two of you shared the rent on the place but still, you were proud of him for being so successful while doing something he loved.
Pulling up to the wedding venue you smiled to yourself as Tae pulled into the parking space next to Jungkook's car. Your smile was soon wiped off your face the second Jungkook stepped out of his car. He was wearing tight black pants that accentuated his thighs with a button up shirt tucked in, two of the top buttons undone to show off a little bit of his chest. The only disappointment was one of your favorite parts about him, his arms littered with tattoos, had been covered by his sleeves. And yet, you still couldn’t find it in yourself to be disappointed, not when he looked this good. You will yourself to stop gawking at the boy, letting your eyes meet his only to see him already looking back at you with an uncharacteristically smug look on his face. You couldn’t care less that you’d been caught, in fact you were glad he’d seen you. You threw a wink his way and turned to your friend, taking the camera he’d lent you to use for the job out of his hands. Poor Tae was doing his best to ignore his best friend eye fucking the guy he’d hired, he found himself wishing more and more that Hoseok had been available.
Throughout the wedding you made sure to focus on the job, as much as you wanted to flirt with the pretty man in the oh so tight jeans you didn’t want to mess things up for Taehyung. So you kept to your section of the venue and did as you’d been instructed. The ceremony surprisingly seemed to go by quickly though the reception was lasting a lot longer than you’d expected. You weren’t sure how many people kept the photographers around throughout the whole reception but you guessed if you had a rich daddy to pay for everything you might do the same. Just as you were about to take the fortieth picture of the bride's grandmother doing shots with yet another man in his twenties you heard your name being called.
“The groom said they’re about to move the party to one of his friends' houses, it’s just their friends. He invited us.” Taehyung told you quietly so no one would overhear. Jungkook stood next to him though his eyes were anywhere else but on you or Tae.
“So they want us to take pictures of their friends doing coke and getting fucked up?” You mumbled not exactly excited about the extra work. Jungkook snorted at your response, you couldn’t help but smile a bit, feeling proud.
“No they want us to come get fucked up with them. Or, at least I don’t think that they’re planning on doing drugs.” Taehyung seemed to be questioning whether he should even go now, worried you might be right.
“Look at them Taehyung, of course they're going to do drugs. Why should that stop us from partying like Belford? We can be The Wolves of Walmart.” Taehyung shook his head at your ridiculous joke, especially considering you probably had just as much money as any of them, but chuckled nonetheless. How the two of you had even stayed so close into your adulthood was honestly something you both wondered everyday. You two were so different. Where he worried about things like drugs and shied away from anything overly sexual you didn’t bat an eye to it. You weren’t necessarily into coke or anything hardcore like that, but you’d smoked your fair share of weed in your lifetime.
“We’ll go if you want to but if anyone offers me a line I’m leaving.” Tae said, shuddering slightly at the thought. You smiled up at your soft hearted best friend finding his caution endearing. This was why you’d been able to stay close, because the differences the two of you had always seemed to be nothing in comparison to the adoration you held for each other, platonically of course. Once upon a time you might’ve harbored a crush for your introverted, modest friend but then he came out to you in tenth grade and you quickly got over those feelings. Besides, you were more into the bad boy type anyways.
“Are you coming too, Jungkookie?” You asked looking up at him through your eyelashes, eyes opening just a little wider. How could Jungkook say no to you when you looked at him like that? As much as your relentless teasing made him feel like he might have an aneurysm, he couldn’t resist spending more time with you. It felt weird not having you messing with him today, so maybe you’d talk to him at the party. This was probably the last time you’d see each other anyways, he should make it count.
“I’ll go for a bit.” The cute little smile that took over your face was enough to rid Jungkook of any second thoughts he might’ve had. Jungkook saw you as this powerful intimidatingly sexy woman who somehow still emitted the cutest energy. How would he ever survive tonight with you switching back and forth so drastically?
It didn’t seem to be a concern once the three of you got to the party. Ever since you walked through the door you’d been swarmed by multiple people. It was one after the other, even if Jungkook had worked up the courage to talk to you he’d never get the chance to. So he sulked on the couch, squished in between a couple engulfing each other and the arm of the couch. He’d lost Taehyung a while ago, though Jungkook figured he’d found someone for himself.
You loved your viewers, well most of them, there were definitely a few on the weirder side that occasionally took things too far, but overall you loved them, you were so thankful to them. It was times like these though, that you wished your job wasn’t so public. You’d been stuck in the same spot for the last hour, person after person had come up to you to ask if you were Honey from onlyfans. You hated that you sounded so snobby in your head but you really just wanted to talk with people normally tonight, you were there to have fun after all. Not that talking with your viewers wasn’t fun, you just really wished it didn’t feel like work sometimes. You’d zoned out on the guy next to you who had been telling you all of his favorite videos of yours in great detail. Your eyes found Jungkook across the room, a strong pout on his lips as he played on his phone. You tilted your head slightly wondering what had him so upset and why he wasn’t enjoying himself.
“Yuta, dude, leave that poor girl alone. Sorry Honey, he doesn’t know how to shut up sometimes.” One of the girls, who’d earlier introduced herself to you as Sorn, said trying to save you from her friend. Honestly Yuta wasn’t bothering you, it was just that he’d been rambling for the last 10 minutes and you would much rather be figuring out what’s going on with Jungkook right now. You smiled over at Sorn silently thanking her.
“It’s no problem, I think it’s sweet that you enjoy my content so much Yuta. I do think I'm going to go check on my friend though, again, it was nice talking to both of you.” You said, smiling sweetly at Yuta while winking at both of them before making your escape to Jungkook. You say yourself on the arm of the couch he was sitting on, catching his attention right away. You couldn’t help but notice the annoyed look on his face when he looked up at you.
“Why are you pouting over here all by yourself?” You asked him trying not to laugh at how obvious it was that he was struggling not to look at your legs that you’d draped over his own.
“Not all of us have a fan club everywhere we go to keep us entertained.” Jungkooks sharp tone had caught you off guard and shamefully sent a wave of head down to the pit of your stomach, but maybe that was the drink you’d been nursing since you’d gotten here. You weren’t sure why you found yourself wanting to make it up to Jungkook, you hadn’t done anything wrong. It’s not like the two of you came together or anything. Yet here you were, giving him your best apologetic eyes, with a hand on his shoulder.
“I’m sorry Jungkookie, I didn’t mean to make you jealous.” You said quietly, hoping he wouldn’t think you were still teasing him. Jungkook didn’t know where this shift in attitude came from but he could swear he’d seen this look somewhere before.
“I’m not jealous, what do I have to be jealous over?” He didn’t know if he was trying to convince himself or you but it was clear neither of you were buying it. You didn’t push it though, you didn’t know why you felt so compelled to make things right with him. Maybe it was just instinct because you were admittedly attracted to him and you tend to submit to the people in your life who you connected with physically.
“But still, we’re friends and I let you sit over here alone while I talked to a bunch of people. I should’ve stayed with you. Let me make it up to you?” There was no way in hell Jungkook was reading this right. You were sat with your legs draped across his lap, your fingertips grazing his shoulder and every so often they’d brush his neck just slightly, but there was no way you were saying what he thinks you’re saying.
“What, um, what do you mean?” He asked, avoiding your intense gaze.
“Anything you want, name it and I’ll do it.” How was this happening? Jungkook had to be reading it wrong. But, what else could you mean? His mind was racing so fast, he felt himself freaking out. Before he even thought about it Jungkook was mumbling something about finding a bathroom and stumbling off away from you. Jungkook wasn’t even sure how he found the bathroom, but all he knew is he needed water, now.
Splashing some of the water onto his face Jungkook attempted to calm himself down. Why had he gotten so freaked out? This wasn’t like him, normally he was good at getting people he was interested in, man or woman. Why did you make him so nervous? Just because he’d seen you naked before didn’t mean you’re any different from the people he’d slept with before. Except you were, he hadn’t slept with you. He’d just seen some pictures and maybe a video or two(or fifty) of you. He’d fantasized about you without even knowing you and now he knew you, kind of. He felt creepy. Why did he though? You posted that stuff for people like him to look at, you made it clear that you knew he’d seen your stuff and you didn’t act like you felt weird about it. In fact, you acted like you liked it. So why was he hiding in the bathroom? You’d basically just offered to fulfill all the fantasies he’d had about you. He had never been one to run from that kind of offer before, at least not from someone as beautiful as you.
The more Jungkook thought the more he hated himself from most likely missing his chance with you. How many of your viewers could say they’d had this opportunity? He didn’t know, but the answer was none. You’d made it a rule a long time ago not to sleep with any of your viewers. There was just something about Jungkook, which is why you’d made your way outside the bathroom to apologize for freaking him out. You weren’t sure why you thought he’d wanted to sleep with you in the first place. Sure you knew he’d seen your stuff online but that didn’t mean anything. Jungkook didn’t see you at first when he opened the door but when you’d called out his name he was glad to see you.
“I’m sorry I forced myself on you like that, I think I just read the signs wrong. I got carried away because I think you’re really attractive and, I don’t know, I’m sorry.” You kept your eyes on your hands folded in front of you. You had this pitiful look on your face like you were ashamed of yourself. Jungkook was disgusted with how hot he found it. Why did literally everything about you turn him on? More importantly why hadn’t he jumped at the opportunity to act on it when he first noticed that you were willing. Yoongi would’ve called Jungkook a little bitch if he’d seen the way he’d been acting around you.
“Shut up and get in the bathroom.” Your eyes went wide as you checked to make sure it was actually Jungkook’s mouth those words came out of. You felt heat rushing to your cheeks at the stern look on his face. Where had this come from? Where had he been hiding this side? You knew if you walked in that bathroom you’d be getting exactly what you’d silently(and not so silently) been begging for since you met Jungkook. He didn’t want to push you, but he couldn’t deny the excitement he felt when you rushed past him into the bathroom.
“If you don’t want to do this we don’t have to.” You told Jungkook when he shut the two of you in the small bathroom. You wanted to give him the opportunity to leave before anything happened. The last thing you wanted was for him to feel pressured.
“I can assure you babygirl, I want nothing more than to show you just how much I want this.” Before you could process his words Jungkook's lips were on yours, kissing you like a man starved. His lips were soft and he wasted no time being gentle, sliding his hands in your hair and tugging your head back further to give him better access as he slipped his tongue into your mouth. Then, before you could get used to the feeling of his mouth on yours, his lips left yours and attacked the skin on your neck. Sucking, nibbling, and licking as he tried to find your sweet spot. Your fingers were desperate to cling onto something, moving from his back up to the base of his neck you raked your fingers through his hair as his mouth worked wonders on your neck. You were a whimpering mess as he left little marks all over your neck. Jungkook smiled at the sweet sounds leaving your lips, feeling proud of himself for getting this kind of reaction without even really doing anything. You could feel the wetness beginning to pool in your panties and you ached for some kind of relief. You involuntarily pushed your hips into his, feeling his already forming bulge causing both of you to moan at the sudden contact.
“You better keep your hands to yourself if you want this to go well for you, little girl.” You had to stop yourself from moaning out loud at his words. Jungkooks grip on your hips was tight enough that you’d probably bruise but all you could feel was pleasure.
“Kookie please,” You begged, dropping down to your knees in front of him, taking his large hands in yours. “wanna make it up to you.”
You wouldn’t continue without his explicit permission, so you gazed up at him with wide eyes. How could Jungkook say no when the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen was on her knees in front of him begging to suck his cock?
“Go ahead baby girl, show me what that pretty mouth can do.” He said letting his hand fall to the back of your head gently. His cock was practically screaming to be let out of the tight confidments of his jeans. As you cautiously undid the zipper and button and pulled both his jeans and his underwear down at once Jungkook let out a soft noise at the relief. You gawked at his size, he was probably the biggest you’d ever had, prettiest too. Your mouth was watering at the sight, he was perfect.
Looking up at him you were stunned again by the beauty that is Jeon Jungkook. Staring down at you with his mouth agape he brought his hand to your jaw, swiping his thumb along your bottom lip. Keeping your gaze locked with his you opened your mouth, sticking your tongue out just slightly, licking at the pad of his thumb. Jungkook groaned slightly as he finally guided his cock into your mouth, watching you close your lips around the head and started slowly bobbing your head up and down his shaft. You began to use your tongue as you quickened your pace. Jungkook was mostly silent but you could tell he was enjoying himself when he tightened his grip on your hair every time you took him deeper.
You began to use your hands a bit, causing a moan to leave his lips at the feeling. You then took his cock deeper, finally making him buck his hips forward, hitting the back of your throat. Rolling your eyes back you pushed your head down further on his cock hoping he’d get the hint. Thankfully he did, tangling his hand in your hair to hold your head still, he bucked his hips again, harder this time, shoving his cock even farther than before. He repeated the motion, fucking your face until you had to tap out.
Pulling off of his dick with a pop, you were gasping for air, your chin covered in saliva and your hair was a mess, you looked perfect. Quickly Jungkook pulled you up by your arms needing to feel your lips on his again. Your pretty little hands snaked their way up Jungkook's shirt, feeling his abs as he kissed you. How that simple action affected him so much Jungkook didn’t know, but he did know he was in for it. Sex before didn’t come close to how it felt with you and he hadn’t even fucked you yet, how was he ever supposed to have sex again with a random girl knowing it could be this good with you?
You lightly traced Jungkook’s abs letting your hand slowly fall down to his cock, pumping it in hopes of getting what you wanted. Jungkook kissed you a little harder making you moan and rub your thighs together for some relief. Needing to feel you Jungkook pulled your hand off him and roughly turned you around, pushing you against the bathroom counter. You whined at the feeling of his hard cock against your ass.
“You’ve been such a good girl baby, sucking my cock so well. Feel how hard you made me?” He whispered, his raspy voice sending more heat to your dripping core. His arms wrapped around your waist, his hand cupping your clothed pussy making you whine out. “Want to be my good girl? Want me to fill up this pretty little pussy?
“Please.” You begged, wanting nothing more than to be his good girl. Jungkook pulled your dress up over your ass, yanking your soaked panties down letting them fall to your ankles. His hands gripped your ass as he admired the pretty sight for a moment before he dipped one finger into your entrance almost groaning at how tight and wet you were.
“Fuck babygirl, who did this to you? You’re soaked.” He teased, adding another finger to stretch you out enough for his cock. You let your head fall forward, loving the feeling of Jungkook's fingers pumping in and out of you. Then suddenly he pulled them out and slapped your aching pussy causing you to yelp. “I asked you a question, pretty girl.”
“You did.” You whined out, pushing your ass back into Jungkook's hips, needing some relief. Thankfully he shoved both fingers back in, feeling satisfied with your answer. But he wasn’t done teasing you.
“Are you sure it’s only for me? Not all those other people you were ignoring me for?” He asked, curling his fingers up and hitting your g-spot.
“No, fuck,” You moaned as he continuously hit that spot, you were so close. “It’s only for you, daddy.”
Jungkook groaned at the nickname, he’d never cared much for it but something about the way you said it made his dick twitch. He pulled his soaked fingers from your pussy ignoring the whine you let out in protest. He spread your juices all over his cock before lining the head at your entrance. Both of you let out gasps of air and soft moans as he slid his cock into you.
“Fuck baby, you feel so good.” All you could manage to reply with was moans of agreement as he bottomed out. Both of you needed a moment to not cum right away. The feeling was too good. Needing him to move you ground your hips into his making him groan out a sweet sound as he gripped your hips tightly to stop you. Before you could beg him to move he had pulled back almost all the way out and slammed his hips back in forcefully. Your head fell forward as he repeated the action at a fast pace. His hands left your hips to squeeze your ass, letting one hand fall down to spank you, surely leaving a handprint.
Needing to get deeper Jungkook pulled your leg up onto the counter, gripping at your thigh tightly. You moaned at how deep he was getting now, knowing it wouldn’t be long before you were coming apart. Jungkook shushed you letting his free hand wrap around to shove two of his fingers into your mouth to silence your loud moans.
“You’re doing so good for me pretty girl but I need you to be quiet okay? We don’t want to get caught, do we?” The thought of someone catching the two of you had you clenching around Jungkook's cock, making his hips sputter for a moment. “Oh you like that idea? The thought of someone finding out what a slut you are for your daddy?”
Jungkook's hand left your thigh and immediately found your clit, rubbing at a fast pace to match the way he was pounding into you. You moaned loudly around his fingers, biting down on them lightly causing a hiss to leave his lips. Your leg that had been holding you up was starting to feel like jello but you ignored it as you came undone all over Jungkook's cock, clenching and shaking in his hands. He held out, fucking you through your orgasm until you let your leg down so you could hold youself up. Jungkook quickly pulled out ready to cum on your back until you dropped to your knees and opened your mouth wide. Moaning at the sight Jungkook let his load spill all over your tongue only getting a little bit on your lips. You kept your eyes on his as you gathered his cum on your fingers and popped them in your mouth making sure you got every last drop. After you swallowed you opened your mouth to show him, making him smile down at you, grazing your cheek with his thumb.
“Did I do good?” You asked softly, still staring up at him with wide eyes.
“You did amazing baby girl.” He told you, pulling you up to stand. He chuckled and held you still when you wobbled slightly still not fully able to stand on your own. Crouching down, Jungkook pulled your panties up your legs for you and let your dress back down.
“Thank you, daddy.” You told him, partly teasing and partly serious. He rolled his eyes and smirked at your words placing a soft kiss on your cheek. The moment was interrupted by a banging on the door, making you two jump apart.
“Yo, are you two idiots not done yet?”

2018 Year In Review
Previous Posts: (2017) (2016) (2015) (2014) (2013) (2012) (2011)
2018 has not been a banner year for self care. It has not been a banner year for much of anything, to be honest. This year in review will be much less colourful and exciting than they traditionally tend to be. It has been a year of hard work, stress, and feeling the pressure of the less-fun parts of adulthood creeping up on me. It has been really hard, to be totally honest. I have spent the majority of the year in a deep state of exhaustion and distress. There are positives within it all, though. Big positives, such as:
I went on my longest trip ever away from home.
I have developed so much in the professional sense and have fallen so deeply in love with social work and my future career path.
I have made new friends who reflect these changing influences in my life, and the enduring friendships that have survived all of these years continue to strengthen and deepen as time goes on.
Tumblr media
January:
Tell me - why does January always suck? 2018 began with an opening double shift on New Year’s Day, which I feel is strongly symbolic of the year as a whole because you have an exhausted Megan struggling to responsibly balance my professional responsibilities, self-care, and partying. On January 3rd, Alex and I booked our flights to Asia and in doing so, solidified that we were going through with a plan made drunkenly over the table last summer at a karaoke bar.
I did get to spend an awesome ski weekend with Alesta, Sydney x 2, and Shelby. It was especially nice because this particular group of people had never spent time all together - we were just united by being a group of girls who love to ski. We hit Lake Louise on Saturday, stayed overnight at a hostel in Banff, and Alesta and I hit Sunshine on Sunday. In Banff, we got a free jug of sangria because we are cute girls. We went to High Rollers and Sydney was drinking IPAs and porters like a pro. I went alone (like... what? Who am I? How drunk was I?) to Dancing Sasquatch after and made friends with some Nova Scotians in line. One of them paid for my cover and bought me not one but two of those infamous Time Machine drinks and extra bonus - Alesta and I got FREE lift passes at Sunshine.
At the end of the month, my mental health took a sharp nosedive into oblivion and I don’t even really know why. I started experiencing a violent resurgence of something I haven’t felt since the end of the 12th grade, having what I now recognize as panic attacks. The first one came when I was studying on a Sunday at Higher Ground and I had no idea what the fuck was happening, I’d been there for several hours when I suddenly felt the urge to throw up. I packed up all my shit and burst out the door literally gasping for air but ended up being fine. Just shaky and confused. They started happening more frequently after this, with no predictable trigger, and I started to feel the physical manifestations of stress. That was new and it freaked me out. This lent itself to a lot of strange patterns around eating (since I was constantly feeling nauseous, or I thought I was, I didn’t want to have a full stomach. I also thought I had a food intolerance, and because I’m me was 100% convinced I was pregnant because the stress caused me to miss my period).

February
Things started to get so bad in February that I had to plead my manager at Famoso for less hours. He was an idiot in general but also did not seem to grasp the severity of what I told him. He would frequently schedule me for these long swing swifts all weekend long, leaving no time or energy for the mountains of homework I had to do. It did not help.
February was especially busy with school. That’ll be a recurring theme throughout this year. It could honestly be a summary of this entire year - so I’ll spare you the details. But five courses at the University of Calgary is no joke.
I never needed reading week so badly in my entire life. I was beyond happy to just be able to take a long weekend and not be at Famoso. Shelby arranged for a giant group of her friends to spend the weekend at her friend Sawyer’s massive, absolutely beautiful cabin in Invermere. I got to spend some quality time with two of my favourite people on the planet - Emma and Sydney. From the minute we got into Emma’s car together, to having ciders at the Emerald Lake Lodge on the way, to eating A&W and sharing a bed and “she gon’ fuck the fridge.” Sydney and I spent one afternoon on homework while everyone else went skiing and I was with her when she got the news that she’d won this massive grant and we celebrated by sitting in this magical massage chair and just loving life. We played Drink, Talk, Learn! And I gave a drunken presentation on the history and etiology of pugs. Emma and I went skating on Lake Windermere to cure our hangovers on Sunday. A keg and a bonfire were involved. It was so Canadian, honestly LOL. And so perfect.

March
Although I was still struggling with this weird panic-nausea cycle, it lessened through March as more and more assignments were completed. I started to see the light at the end of the tunnel, to use a cliche. I gave three presentations in a week, I remember that being particularly awful.
I attempted Mellow March for the second time and once again failed. Mildly concerning. I caved on a Wednesday wing night with the Famoso friends. It was 27 days in. So close, so close. 2019 will be my year!
I started getting really into podcasts at this time because I started commuting using public transit. I got really into Guys We Fucked (which I still love), and This Is Actually Happening. TIAH is kind of fucked up though, and after a while it started to fuck me up. I would have weird dreams about the content and I started becoming paranoid that there was something wrong/extraordinary about me. So I stopped. I guess that is something I have learned about myself this year, is that even when it’s not overt, I am really deeply effected by some of the things I learn. Typically, people of this nature do not excel in the field of social work so allow me to flag this as a place for improvement in the future.
I ran the 5km at the St. Patrick’s Day road race, which was awesome and I won the draw that everyone was entered in and got a FREE pair of these super nice, hot pink New Balance running shoes that I now cherish with my life.
I had my first round of practicum interviews, which only ended up being one interview because I was offered the placement at CommunityWise before I could interview anywhere else. This is one of the best things to happen the whole year :)
And a special moment for me as well was on March 31, I got to see Alvvays live.

April
In April, I finished hell semester and immediately jetted off to Thailand.
From the get go, the trip was a bit of a shit show. This was my second time to Asia, and my first experience with really planning a trip including flights, hostels, and transportation from place to place without the aid of a tour guide or travel company. We had a time even getting to Bangkok due to an untimely snow storm the day of our departure that forced our flight to Vancouver to be late and causing us to miss our connecting flight to China. After two hours in line at the Air Canada desk, an agent produced a new itinerary for us. Calgary to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Bangkok. He printed the sheets out and when I looked at the times on the paper, the mental math wasn’t adding up. With me, the mental math never really adds up but this time it seemed impossible that we could leave so much later than planned for our trip and arrive in Bangkok only three hours later than we were supposed to. I brought this up with him and he assured me it was fine. I wasn’t satisfied though, and asked a bunch of other airport personnel the same question. They all said we were fine but lo and behold, we land in Hong Kong and are waiting for the Thai Airlines desk to open so we can retrieve the tickets for the last leg of the journey when the agent there tells us, “They put you on the flight that left yesterday.” Anger and distress ensues. I call Air Canada from the airport in Hong Kong and the call drops. I’m straight up crying on the floor at this point. But in the end – we fucking made it.
In Bangkok, I was welcomed back to the stifling heat and humidity of Asia. We met American doctors-to-be who were at the end of their trip and were totally sick of one another and were very happy to have company. We ate massaman curry for every meal, partied on Khao San Road (those nitrous balloons!!! God, they’re so fun!!), and spent a lot of money on a single cocktail just for a photo op at the top of a skyscraper but the sunset was perfect and it was totally worth it.
In Chiang Mai we drank Sangsom and Coca-Cola by the pool and ate street food out of Styrofoam containers. We met these Americans who were teaching English in Chiang Mai and they took us to a night club on the back of their motorbikes. I did a drug I said I’ve never do in one of the bathrooms at this night club and ended up going home with one of the aforementioned teachers. It was funny to me because at about 3:00pm, Alex and I went back to our hostel to change and get ready for the evening and at that point I said, “I think I’m going to end up hooking up with Cory.” I fucking knew. I KNEW.
In Pai, I had the DIRTIEST hostel experience of my life. I was showering… just fully naked and vulnerable in this nasty ass shower when I saw a bug I did not recognize from my sheltered upbringing crawl out of a hole in the wall. I have never felt more small. It was also 43 degrees and we were staying in a tiny hut with a plug-in fan that only worked half the time and somehow had the effect of making the room hotter? Pai was also the first time we rented motorbikes. It’s honestly so dangerous… like, what the fuck, Thailand. We experienced our first flash rainstorm. We went to a place called Sunset Bar and took mushroom shakes and holy shit I’ve never experienced more potent mushrooms in my entire life. We met our Irish friends who we’d later see in Koh Pha Ngan, and I slept with an Israeli soldier on our second-to-last night and I’m almost 100% certain I took his virginity.
Koh Pha Ngan was alllll thunderstorms. We also decided to splurge a bit on food on this island and gorged ourselves with seafood and lavender Moscow mules at this nice restaurant down the road from our hostel. We partied so hard. We went to the pre-parties for the Full Moon – they have the Waterfall party two nights before, and the Jungle party the night before. I had sex with a total stranger at the Waterfall party up against a rock (when I recounted this story to Steven upon returning home he put on a redneck accent and said, “C’mon baby let me take you down to the fuck rock” and now that’s all I hear when I think about this experience in my head). The Full Moon Party was fun but not AS fun as the pre parties. It wasn’t as wild and the beach is so big but everyone concentrates in one little area. I took some kind of mystery pill (as you can see, I was very safe in Thailand) and had yet another sexual experience with a casual partner. I also witnessed a fight in the taxi back because one girl called another girl a stripper. It was bad.

May
Continuing on with our Asia trip.
We landed in Krabi and intended fully to chill out a little bit after the wildness of Koh Pha Ngan. The first night was chill, we were staying in the Muslim quarter of the Krabi area so there weren’t a ton of nightclubs to go to and the hostel had some kind of run-in with police and weren’t able to take us out on the pub crawl we signed up for (lame). We had a roommate from Vancouver on the second day who bought a bunch of Xanax from a Thai pharmacy and gave me one. I can never do it again because it was so. good. But of course, I took one pill and stopped drinking just in case. This bitch continued drinking and took six or seven Xanax throughout the night. I honestly don’t know how she lived. We went rock climbing and drank beers on a boat tour one day and it was soooo great. We had the hottest tour guide. I did a hike by my lonesome that I nearly died on.
On the ferry ride from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi is where I got the sunburn that will likely give me skin cancer in later life and kill me. 90 minutes on the outside deck of a ferry (because I felt nauseous as fuck and didn’t want to vom in the cabin) absolutely fucked. me. up. We stayed at another pretty fucking gross hostel in Koh Phi Phi, and my roommates were all male which was a new experience for me. I went on a solo booze cruise cause Alex was sick. We took mushrooms again with our Canadian friend Kelsey and god, I was laughing so hard I was crying and I could not stop. I was like rolling around in the sand laughing so fucking hard about Fisherman’s Friends candy. It was so blissful. So pure.
And then… the sickness. This is going to be TMI but… fuck it. A bit of indigestion and stomach trouble is expected whenever a white person enters Asia. Different microbes etc. etc. But this… this was on a new fucking level. I knew something was up because on the morning that we woke up to take our ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket, I vomited. And I never vomit, and I wasn’t that hungover (especially in relation to much of the rest of the trip). I felt okay afterwards though so we soldiered on. Three hour ferry ride, totally fine. We board our bus that will take us from the ferry port in Phuket to our hotel and about halfway through this bus ride, I feel it. I am wearing overalls. My heart starts beating loudly in my chest, sweat begins to bead on my forehead. Holy fuck, I am going to shit my pants. I clench until we get to the hostel – which is, of course, the last stop. It’s like a solid 45 minutes of pain. My stomach is ROILING. I have never felt anything like it.
I honestly know nothing about Phuket because I spent the entire 72 hours we were there running from my bunk bed to the bathroom. I would go so far as to say every ten minutes. At one point, I just brought my laptop into the washroom with me and watched Netflix for a few hours. A roommate who was with us switched rooms (understandably… I’m sorry, Helen). I didn’t eat for four days, literally not a fucking thing. Just Gatorade and water so that I didn’t die of dehydration. Because we had an airplane to catch and I needed to not be shitting the contents of my body out, I saw a doctor. He prescribed me like five different medications and told me just to take like eight of these pills and to expect stomach pain but it would at least get me through the flight to Seoul and hopefully home.
It worked, and we spent the last few days of our trip in Seoul. What an absolutely fascinating and beautiful part of the world. With Kieun as our guide, we got to see the best parts of Seoul. People took photos with us and gave us free shit. I had the absolute best meal of my life (it was the first thing I’d eaten in like four days… I really risked it all with the Korean barbecue honestly…). All-you-can-eat thick fatty slices of pork belly, grilled in front of us and dipped in sesame oil and salt with garlic and spices. Spicy chicken feet on the side, corn with cheese. It was wild. I cannot believe I stomached it.
And on May 12th, we returned home back to our lives and school and work and all of that boring ass shit. I remained ill for a solid six weeks upon returning home. To a lesser degree, I still have not fully recovered. At this point, I am unsure if I ever will. I truly think that second-round Asia gave me skin cancer and permanently altered my gastrointestinal functioning. Worth it? Unsure. But it happened nonetheless.

June
My brother graduated from university and won a very prestigious award and it was very nice to watch him cross the stage and hear a nice speech about his accomplishments (he won so many scholarships that he basically had a free ride to school – I think it’s clear who inherited the brains).
I finished up my spring courses. Can I just say - spring courses are the worst? The two I picked were especially bad. The one about human sexuality was basically Sex Ed 101 which made for an easy A but I was hoping to investigate deeper on a number of topics. And the second one was way too hard for my tiny brain to accommodate and I got the lowest mark I’ve ever gotten on my paper and it brought me down.
I had a very random unexpected night where I slept with a really close friend of mine (like, friends for over a decade) who I used to have a little bit of a crush on in high school. We were very drunk and it was kind of a curiosity-satisfying move that has actually not resulted in a very big change to our relationship at all but I think it’s worth mentioning because younger me would have been stoked. This one’s for you, younger me!
We went to the High River Rodeo and Cabaret – another unexpected move but oh my god it was so fun. Matt, Steven, Amanda and I. You could buy as many beers as you wanted at a time and they were cheap because fuck the AGLC apparently. The rodeo was actually super fun. The cabaret was redneck af and I happened to see my roommate from the hostel in Koh Phi Phi and his buddies there? Although it was not a friendly reunion because I had unknowingly exposed him for cheating on his girlfriend when he was in Phi Phi (which he did. I shared a room with him, and the girl he loudly banged every night until 4am). Two-stepping ensued and I passed out in the car ride home. I have a great photo of Steven from this night next to a bottle of hot sauce. I do not recall why. I will include it below.

July
Okay, I am just going to preface this by saying July was a hot mess.
Myself, Madison, Maeghan, and Cayley were all single and messing around on dating apps so we decided to create Tinder bingo. It’s exactly what it sounds like. The rules were that you could only cross off two things per date (so that you had to go on a minimum of three to win), you got bonus points for going on a Tinder date with the same person someone else had gone out with, and the first to win got their drinks paid for on a night out. So, I went on exactly one Tinder date. Which is something I said I’ve never do and never really saw myself doing but I went for it on this occasion because I think that in this day and age, a Tinder date is an experience everyone should have. So I bit the bullet, and went for a drink with this guy James at the Oak Tree Tavern. And oh... my god? What a terrible experience? LAUGHABLY terrible. His only desired topic of conversation were the nationalities of people I had slept with and in what circumstances. At one point he asked me, “when was the last time you had sex? Was it good?” He also talked at maximum volume and I guarantee you everyone else at that bar overheard our conversation. Midway through the date, he asked for a review of how he was doing and I told him he seemed a bit nervous. This angered him. He said, “I’M NOT NERVOUS” and I was like, “you asked, buddy.” He asked me if I would pay for him. Cayley literally had to come rescue me and I ran out of his car where he had unbuttoned his pants and had his dick out and was literally on the verge of tears begging me to touch it so hard. I literally bolted out of his car and he yelled out the window, “CALL ME!” He still hits me up on instagram sometimes. I hope his life gets better.
I also moved again. This is my favourite living situation I’ve ever had. Great roommates who are almost never home. Cute house. Good location. A+ choice by me.
I got really obsessed with the Thai cave rescue. It was just such a compelling and unique STORY and I would literally come home from work and refresh the BBC live update feed for hours until I fell asleep, then I’d wake up and refresh hoping for good news. I cannot wait for the movie. I will go opening day. #Obsessions
Stampede!!! Oh my god, what a wonderful Stampede. The most memorable thing is that Steven and I went to the standing rodeo one afternoon and got absolutely. fucking. hammered. Whilst there, we met and befriended two Australian retirees named Lyn and Ken. They are rich and are obsessed with horseriding and rodeo stuff. They purchased many drinks for us and we convinced them to come to Nashville North with us, where they purchased MORE drinks for us and Steven attempted to show them how to two-step. They later invited me to go horseback riding in Banff and I accepted. They literally picked me up, drove me to Banff, we crushed two bottles of wine at the Park gin distillery, went on a three-hour horseback ride through the mountains, they drove me home and I paid for NONE OF IT. It was........ a day. I sat on my bed later and thought to myself, “that was fucking weird.” But now, if I ever go to Melbourne, I will hit them up.
It was Ali’s birthday and we went camping in Waiparous. We took mushrooms on Saturday and just as they were beginning to fully kick in, the RCMP rolled in and kicked us out of our campsite. What a wild time to be faced with an interaction with the cops. Also - no one could drive except for two people who had stayed sober and they had to shuttle us to a new campsite. Have you ever tried setting up a tent on mushrooms? Do you know how difficult and hilarious it is?
And lastly at the end of July, I went to Folk Fest. I saw Alvvays again. Front row! Like, against the barrier front row. It was awesome. It was folk fest that inspired me to cut my hair and get bangs again. No regrets. I love my bangs. I also experienced a level of street harassment that I didn’t know was possible from some random, innocent-seeming guy. It was terrifying. I called the police. No bueno.

August
In August, I got promoted at my job and basically became a baby manager. It was better in theory than in practice because my shifts got longer, I made less in tips (but more hourly), and the cash out for a restaurant is a long and frustrating process that depends on a lot of small pieces working together correctly in a big ass spreadsheet and I suck at math.
In happier news – August was also the establishment of podcast club. Podcast club is one of the best and dorkiest things I have ever been involved with. We pick a podcast each week to listen to, and get together on Sunday mornings at 10:00am to discuss the contents of the podcast. It was initially open to whomever wanted to come but has since whittled down to a core group and at this point, we’re all so close that it would almost be weird to introduce a new person into the mix. There is Kendal, who I go to school with and who started the whole club. Her boyfriend, Mitch. Lachlan and Maddy who are siblings. Matt, a YouTuber who was kind of a wildcard. Chad, also kind of a wildcard but who works as a youth counsellor – and me! Podcast club has made my life infinitely better and is probably the best thing to come out of 2018, in all honesty.
I also got obsessed with Harry Potter and read like almost the whole series and my new at the time roommates thought I was such a loser because I would literally post up on the couch in the living room with a HP book and they would come back five hours later and I hadn’t moved and all I wanted to talk about was Harry Potter.

September / October / November
I am lumping these three months together in this review because truly, they are lumped together in my mind and heart.
On September 11, I started my first practicum at CommunityWise. I really had no idea what to expect when I started there but looking back, I cannot believe how hard I lucked out. The U of C is VERY clinically-based when it comes to how it educates and describes the practice of social work. CW was the opposite of it all and day-to-day so much happens there that it is honestly impossible not to get dragged in at such a deep level that it literally forces you to care. When I was in practicum, I did a lot of reading and I came across this concept of a “disorienting dilemma” which is “an experience within which a current understanding is found to be insufficient or incorrect and the learner struggles with the resulting conflict of views. Such experiences often are those to which learners point as the beginning of the process of questioning their understanding and views and entering the transformative learning process” (Source). Truly, being in that space over the course of 300 hours created this for me. I was forced to confront a lot of racist and otherwise problematic shit that I have been brought up with and that comes up in small ways for me that I try and quash down for the sake of saving face. Poverty, addiction, mental health issues showed up LITERALLY on the doorstep and I was thrown into it all. The experience was a disorienting dilemma and it shook me out of my bubble and I have never fallen so deeply in love with social work. My supervisor and I formed a VERY close relationship that probably broke some ethical and professional boundaries and she was there for me to discuss social issues and experiences I was having in an honest way that really deconstructed things. I had my debit card stolen by a client on one occasion, had to call the DOAP team because I witnessed people in overdose more times than I can count, had to talk many a person down from suicide, befriended a very mentally ill person who suffers from delusions that they are an alien in a human body sent here to observe earth and report back to their master. We had to kick someone out of a workshop for being racist. It was a wild ride, honestly. There were many many positive things to come out of practicum. I built my professional network in ways I never would have been able to, I was able to move out of the “student” realm and step into the role of a social worker and advocate and professional. I did a lot of public speaking! I was out in the community talking to a million different people. I made videos and posters. And the best part of all is that even when my practicum ended, my connection to CW did not. They have hired me on as a digital storytelling intern (paid!) for the new year. Which is a major confidence boost and I just love CW and everyone there so much. I will literally be forever grateful to them for taking me under their collective wing and showing me I have the skills and abilities to be an effective social worker :)
Ahem. Now on to some not-so-good things...
The end of October was kind of difficult because I was attempting to manage practicum responsibilities, actual class projects and homework, second-round practicum interviews, and Famoso. I was very stressed out and it was not good, especially because I got a rejection from one interview and didn’t even get an interview at my top choice. I was feeling very sorry for myself and may or may not have cried at my desk at practicum. It all worked out in the end though, and actually I was offered a placement at the first place I interviewed – they just took a while to get back to me. She called me to let me know this while I was on a run and being idiot me, I picked up… panting and gasping for air in Nose Hill Park. She was like, “We’d like to offer you the place… wait, are you okay?”
I would also like to just slide it in here that I slept with my ex in October. Which wasn’t a particularly momentous occasion and was actually kind of funny because it felt so much like a one night stand. I am mostly putting this in here because I don’t think many people know that and I want to see who reads this far.
Along similarish lines – I PUT MYSELF OUT THERE AND ASKED SOMEONE ON A STRAIGHT UP DATE AND GOT REJECTED AND IT WAS HONESTLY SO EMBARASSING AND BRUTAL and it’s okay now but oh… my god. This also happened around the same time as the rejections from practicum placements and I had such a bad night where I got drunk on my couch alone and Cayley brought me burnt ends from her new job at a brewery because she was #concerned for me and I didn’t want to be alone. That’s a true friend right there.

December
December is only halfway done - but I feel I can summarize it accurately. It has been a nice, tidy wrap up to the year. A month of podcasts, cleaning my house and my car and my life up, a mysterious knee injury that is really fucking me up, working a lot at Famoso, finishing my practicum and school semester. One thing I am dreading is that my brother’s girlfriend who our family is not particularly fond of will be joining us in Saskatoon this year. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

In General
2018 has been very stressful for me. But despite the stress, and sometimes out of it, have come some very nice, beautiful things. I said last year in my post that I wanted to become more deeply involved in my community and in activism and social work and in that way I think I have excelled. I’m in it now, you guys. I feel capable. I feel motivated. I feel CONFIDENT. And I’m fucking excited to see what comes in the future.
I nearly doubled the amount of people I’ve slept with so that’s... a notable thing that happened this year.
It has been nice to feel a return to a sense of belonging with my old high school group of friends. In a way, I feel more united with them than ever. I guess not having a partner that they all hate helps. But also, I think I’ve just been feeling more and more like myself. But to Connor, Steven, Matt, Adam and the assortment of new(er) members that come and go - I am very grateful for you all. It has also been good for my heart and soul to become so close with people from podcast club. It’s actually like... really hard to make new friends. Podcast club made it easy. And I found myself on a Friday night in Maddy and Ben’s apartment, watching cooking shows and teaching them how to play card games, laughing until I cried and drinking wine. And it’s like... who else gets together on EVERY Sunday morning to discuss podcasts? For fun? I know relationships change and dissolve and grow from each year to the next but I just have a deep feeling that some of these friendships are the real deal. And I’m really lucky. It sounds so ~fake deep~ and lame but honestly podcast club is making me a better, happier, less anxious person.
2019:
I think 2019 is going to have to be the year that I really, truly grow the fuck up. I’m not mad about this. I look forward to crushing through 400 more hours of practicum, graduating and getting my degree. Hopefully entering the work force for real (this prospect is honestly so exciting to me... I creep the job boards every day daydreaming about what I might eventually do when I leave the world of waitressing) and making some adult money.
I also like... totally got fat in 2018 so 2019 will involve some activities to counterbalance this. AND I have a ticket to Big Valley Jamboree. Which is hilarious because I think if you asked 2015 Megan what she’d never do, it would be “go to BVJ” but here I am, ticket in hand, excitement mounting by the day. Boots on, bitches.
Some of my goals or things I’d like to work on in 2019 are to become less attached to social media and more invested in the actual moment/doing of things rather than recording them (ironic as I type this MASSIVE year in review post, yes), to get into a healthy and sustainable pattern of exercise where I don’t just like become obsessed with it for a little while and then slowly taper off and then do none of it for like six months... and honestly? I want to download a bunch of those dating apps again and just go for it. I think you can learn so much about yourself through dating and I’ve been such a recluse this year for the most part because I have been sort-of-but-not seeing someone since literally JULY but we’re not actually together and I don’t know what’s going on. I just need to get over my own insecurities and anxiety and just jump in with both feet. It’ll be fun. It’ll be crazy. I’m excited.
The rest of it, as always, is an open book. Who knows where I will be, what I will be doing, or who I will be doing it with by this time next year? Not I.

Chapter 3
Pairing: Chloe X Nadine
Rating: M  - still no sexy times in this chapter
Apologies for this being late. I was distracted by my own idiocy.
Read it on A03
South of France, provence-alpes-côte d'azur
The plan was simple. They had rented a villa - under false names, of course - in provence-alpes-côte d'azur and they would meet Sully there. That was it. That was their grand plan. It was simple in its lack of being anything that actually resembled a plan.
Nadine lent back in her seat, rubbing her forehead with her fingers. She could feel the first twinge of what she just knew was going to be a massive headache. The stupidity of their lack of planning, being stuck in a car with Sam and Charlie for hours - it would be impossible not to have a headache. The rental car smelt like disinfectant and she was stuck in the back seat with Charlie. She was not in a good mood. They had wanted to be as unremarkable as possible so that meant they were posing as two couples who had rented the place to get away before Christmas. “To escape the madness and the children,” Chloe had said in a fake British accent on the phone when making the booking and then laughed in a jolly way that set Nadine’s teeth on edge. The couples were Sam and Chloe sitting upfront, and then Charlie and Nadine stuck in the back, turned away from each other and giving off the vibe that divorce was imminent. Charlie had put a magazine over his head and gone to sleep almost as soon as they had set off. The jammy bastard had slept on the plane as well.
“We are here!” Sam announced turning off and up a long drive way. It had taken quite some time to convince Chloe that Sam should be the one to drive and all the way to the villa from the rental place she had kept twitching, like she might grab the wheel at any moment. She had managed to refrain, but just barely. She had not refrained from loudly and frequently informing Sam that he was shit at driving. They pulled up just outside the front door. There was already a car parked up, a sleek black sedan tucked beneath the shadow of one of the many trees that caged in the driveway.
“Finally!” Chloe said. “The way you were driving we might never have made it.”
“I am an excellent driver,” Sam said.
“You drive like an old man.” Chloe opened the door and hopped out before Sam had a chance to pull up. Nadine ignored the way her body twitched at this. As though Chloe didn't know what she was doing. As if she hadn’t done the same thing a thousand times. As if Nadine would actually be able to save Chloe from the minuscule amount of danger she had just put herself in. She snorted softly and undid her seat belt. Beside her Charlie was still asleep, his head back and mouth open. Nadine shoved him and he woke with a start, the magazine slipping off his face.
“Gun fire!” He yelled, his hands going up.
“We’re here.” Nadine glared at him.
“Oh. Right.” He folded up the magazine and jammed it in the holder in the seat in front of him. He rubbed a hand over his head, shot Nadine a tired smile, and then exited the car, stretching long and loud. He scrubbed his hand roughly over his face and head.
Nadine stepped out as well. The sun was tucked behind grey clouds but that air was warm. So much better then miserable grey wet London.
Sam and Chloe had wandered over together, better to appear as a couple from the on-set. Sam’s arm was draped casually over Chloe’s shoulder. They looked strange and completely unlike themselves; dressed in slacks and shirts that they’d even managed to iron, they looked like the kind of middle-class couple that had a sex dungeon. She and Charlie had made a fraction of the effort having just dressed in their regular clothes. Nadine walked around the side of the car to stand by them. The villa was exceptional. It was only two bedrooms but boasted a huge kitchen (they had declined the offer of a cook) and living space, there was a game room, bar and a huge dining room in case they decided to throw a dinner party. There was even a pool out back.
The front door opened and a smartly dressed woman stepped out. Her blond hair loose about her shoulders and pair of thin framed spectacles were balanced on the bridge of her too delicate nose. She looked frail, like a strong wind could knock her over. She smiled at them in a professional and practised way.
“Hello, I am Eloise,” she said. Her English was near perfect, with just a tease of a French accent. “You must be the Gwynn party.”
 Charlie sniggered.
“We are.” Chloe stepped forward, terrible British accent in full effect; she seized Eloise’s hand and gave it a thorough shake. “We are so happy to be here. It is simply beautiful.”
“Absolutely divine.” Sam chipped in, his accent worse than Chloe’s.
Eloise shook his hand too then discretely wiped it on her skirt. “Your keys.” She handed them to Chloe. “If you need anything then don’t hesitate to call.”
Eloise politely stepped past them and made her way to her car.
Sam was grinning, his eyes following her, roving over her body in her well cut suit and tight pencil skirt. “Ravi de vous rencontrer. Je suis un énorme chou. Je léche beaucoup defenêtres.”
They all stared at him in horror. Eloise hurried into her car.
“Did he just say what I think he said,” Nadine muttered to Chloe.
“He definitely didn’t say what he thinks he said,” Chloe replied.
Charlie clapped a hand on Sam’s shoulder. “It’s alright. Let’s just get the bags, mate.”
“What?” Sam said weakly. “I was just telling her that I’m a big important man and that I do important things.”
“You sure did, fella,” Chloe said. She patted him consolingly on the shoulder.
Chloe opened the door and she and Nadine stepped inside. It was all polished hardwood floors and high ceilings, white walls decorated with huge ornate frames that held no canvases. Stunning but not to Nadine’s personal tastes.
She let out a low whistle. “This must have cost a pretty penny.”
“It’s alright, it wasn’t my penny that paid for it,” Chloe said. She moved slowly inside, turning in a circle and taking in the surroundings.
Nadine turned a slow circle taking in their surroundings. She took note of the furniture and the decorations, the nooks and crannies that could hide a person or inhibit their escape. Chloe would say that she was paranoid but it never hurt to be cautious, especially in new surroundings.
Sam shuffled in after them carrying two duffel bags and Nadine’s case. “Jesus Nadine, what’s in this thing?” he hefted the case up and put it down in front of her.
“My gear.” She picked it up and moved it away from him. Her weapons. What she needed to be prepared. She still had a bad feeling about this entire thing. Too little information, unknown risks… Chloe was caught up in the mystery of it all. One of them had to be prepared.
It had been a hell of a job getting hold of the weapons. After word had got out that she’d killed Orca a lot of her suppliers had severed ties with her. The smaller dealers would come around; they needed the money too much to be picky about whom they supplied weapons too. And it wasn’t as if she needed to supply an army anymore, just herself and Chloe. She’d found one such in Calais, who knew her name and her reputation but who hadn’t yet had the honour of supplying either her or Shoreline.
“How are the rooms working out?” Sam dumped the duffel bags on the floor. He put his hands to the small of his back and pushed, stretching until there was a pop. Charlie walked in with the last of the bags, kicking the door shut behind him.
“Nadine and I are sharing. Obviously,” Chloe said. “You and Charlie are sharing.
Sam turned round to look at Charlie.
Charlie grinned at him. He tapped his chest with his thumb. “I’m big spoon, mate.”
“Yay?” Sam shrunk in on himself, his shoulders hunching up, his head and neck receding like a tortoise.
Nadine stalked around the room. She could make out the kitchen, and then the living room, over the way there was the game room. The staircase curled around from the entryway. She sighed. The rooms were badly set out for defending. Too many places they could be cornered and not enough places to offer effective cover. She’d have to come up with an exit strategy for when things inevitably went south.
Chloe grabbed her bag. “Right. Let’s get settled and then we can talk strategy.” She made her way up the stairs. “You coming, china?”
“Ja.” Wearily Nadine grabbed her own bag, hefted her case, and followed after Chloe.
The stairs were too wide. They would allow several people to come up them rather than forcing single file. There was no way to utilise them to block attacks. She shook her head and followed after Chloe. Indulged herself with the view of Chloe’s arse as she ascended the stairs.
“The rooms are en suite,” Chloe said when they made it to the top of the stairs.
“Good. I wouldn’t want to share a bathroom with either Sam or Charlie.”
Chloe looked between the two doors. “Which room to pick…? Eenie meenie…”
Nadine dropped her bag and case and pushed past Chloe. She opened the first door and peered in. The room was huge. A king sized four-poster bed was set in the centre, matching bedside tables on either side. There was a massive wardrobe and a huge flat screen set on the wall. Near the wardrobe there was a door that must have led to the bathroom. Nadine crossed the room, noting that there was enough floor space for both she and Chloe to do their morning stretches and work outs. She went to the window and looked out. They were at the front of the house and from here she could see the ridiculously long drive way.
“Good call. Check out the view first.”
“I’m not looking at the view,” Nadine said. She quickly exited the room, pushing past a bemused Chloe, and then went into the other room. It was identical in furnishings and floor space. She went to the window and looked out. This had a view of the back of the house, over the pool and then of the tress that surrounded the villas. She tapped the window with her knuckles. Double-glazed, but not reinforced. She’d be able to shatter it. And from this window they could hop down easily enough and make a covered escape through the trees.
The trees could also cover an impending attack but the pool would force them to go around it and slow them down. It would have to do.
 “This room,” she told Chloe.
“Did you measure the TV screen?” Chloe sauntered in and tossed her bag into the corner of the room and then collapsed face down on the bed. “Ooh, it’s so comfy. You have got to try this.”
“Ja. In a moment.” Nadine settled her case down and thumbed in the combination to unlock it. It also needed a key and her thumbprint. She wasn’t taking any chances. She retrieved the pieces for her gun and quickly assembled it.
“Look, if you’re gonna murder Charlie and Sam could you at least do it in a way that doesn’t make a mess.”
Nadine looked back over her shoulder. Chloe had wriggled her way across the bed and now was hanging over the side and peering down at Nadine. “There is no way to kill without making a mess,” Nadine told her, very seriously.
“Sure there is. Smother them or something, possibly with one of these goose feathered pillows. Asphyxiation is the way to go.”
“And when they shit and piss themselves after dying?”
Chloe groaned and pressed her face into the covers. “You take all the romanticism out of murder.”
“I’m just being practical.” She got her holster out and began checking her ammo. She’d brought a piece for Chloe as well but she left that dismantled in the case for now. She shut the case and stood up. Chloe rolled onto her back and was pouting at the canopy of the four-poster. She had left her boots on when climbing all over the bed.
Nadine checked the safety on her gun - it wasn’t loaded but her father’s lessons on gun safety would never leave her - and then put it on the bedside table. She sat on the edge of the bed and pulled Chloe’s foot towards her and began undoing the laces. “Didn’t your mother tell you not to put your shoes on the bed?”
“Sure. But why would I listen to her?” She nudged Nadine with her foot. “You going to tell me what’s wrong?”
“What makes you think something’s wrong?” She pulled off Chloe’s boot and dropped it to the floor then started on her other boot.
“You’ve been acting off ever since Sam pitched this job to us.”
She pulled off the other boot and tossed it to the floor. “I haven’t.”
“You used the gym in our building once before now and you hated it and never went back. Sam shows up and suddenly you live in there.”
“I hardly think a couple of workouts constitute living there.” She did hate that gym. It was full of posers taking up the machines she wanted to use.
Chloe shuffled up the bed, sitting cross-legged next to Nadine. “This could be something really big and it’s like you have no interest in it. And yeah, I know, you don’t like anything but c’mon!”
Nadine exhaled. “Way to take the wind out of my speech. Look.” She turned to face Chloe. “You didn’t consult me about this job. You just went ahead and made all the decisions, you and Charlie and Sam, and you left me out.”
A crease appeared between Chloe’s brows. “No. That is not what happened.”
 “Yes, it is.”
“We discussed it in the pub. We sat down and had a pint when Sam pitched the job to us.”
“And that was the end of my part of the discussion.” Chloe really had her head up her own arse with this job. “I told you I had reservations, we agreed to do some tentative research to see if it would be worth our while and that was the end of my part in the decision making process. I was cut out after that. We went from basic research to kidnapping some guy and now we’re in Provence about to commit more crimes.”
“Well speak up! It’s not my bloody fault you’ve been doing your broody silent routine.”
 “I don’t do a broody silent routine!”
“You’ve been doing it all the way here!” Chloe countered. She blew out a frustrated breath. Her hair was hanging in her eyes and Nadine had to resist the urge to move it away. They stared at each other; neither blinking like it was competition. It was unfortunate that they were both such stubborn people, that arguments between them usually ended with them both backed into their own corners and refusing to move. They definitely had some communications issues to work on. But Nadine was in the right so there was no chance she was backing down. Finally Chloe shook her head she sighed, her head dropping in defeat. “Look… You’re right. I got caught up in it all. I’m sorry.”
 “Thank you.”
“Does this mean you want to bail?” Now she sounded sulky.
“And leave you with those two idiots? Not a chance.” She nudged Chloe with her elbow. “If I say I don’t like the situation and that I think we should bail will you at least consider listening to me?”
 “I can do that.”
 “That’s all I ask.”
Chloe leaned her head on Nadine’s shoulder. “How many guns did you bring?”
“Three. One each and a back up for me.”
Chloe nodded, her head moving against Nadine’s shoulder. She felt warm and the weight of her was reassuring. Chloe didn’t use any kind of flowery or fruit shampoo but her hair still smelled great and Nadine’s resisted the urge to turn her and bury her face in its smooth length and inhale.
Had Chloe known that she’d just follow her? It was easy to forget just how manipulative Chloe could be. Chloe might have been well aware that Nadine wasn’t happy with the job but had known that so long as she didn’t confront Nadine about it and just forged ahead then Nadine would follow like the good little guard dog she was. She frowned. She couldn’t be having thoughts like this. It was poison to their partnership. Chloe - selfish dickhead that she was - had probably just been too caught up in the mystery. Just like she had said.
She was over thinking the situation. Being paranoid and still thinking like a mercenary general rather than someone who was in an equal partnership.
“You are really comfy,” Chloe said. “But we need to get up and start planning.”
 “Ja.”
Chloe moved to stand up and Nadine’s shoulder felt cold without Chloe’s head resting on it.
A high pitched shriek cut through the air followed by the sound of glass breaking. Nadine leapt to her feet.
 “What was that?”
Chloe was up and alert too. “I don’t know. It sounded like a woman. Eloise? But she left.”
“It was probably Sam.” Nadine grabbed her gun and stalked towards the bedroom door. She paused, peering out, her gun at the ready. Chloe sidled up behind her and peered over her shoulder. There was no more screaming, no sounds of a struggle. It was weirdly silent.
“I’ll take point,” Nadine said. She moved cautiously out of the room and to the stairs. She trusted Chloe to cover behind her so didn’t worry that she would be taken unawares. She made her way down the stairs, the entryway coming into view. Anyone could be behind the archways that led into the living area.
“You’re really hot when you go into soldier mode,” Chloe whispered behind her.
Nadine resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “I know,” she whispered back.
“You get all the girls all hot and bothered.”
 “Shut up, Frazer.”
They reached the bottom of the stairs. Everything looked clear. She paused. Waited, poised and alert. Amazingly Chloe managed to stay quiet. She stood too close to Nadine’s back, her body flush against Nadine’s and her breath hot on the back of Nadine’s neck. There was something… sound... Voices coming from another room.
“Oh.” Chloe perked up. “I recognise that voice.” She bopped Nadine on the shoulder with her fist and flashed a grin. “Let’s go.”
“Frazer, wait!” Nadine hissed. But Chloe was already going, hurrying off towards the bar and Nadine was helpless to do anything but follow.
Chloe disappeared through the archway that led to the bar and Nadine hurried after her.
“Sullivan! As I live and breathe.” Chloe came to an abrupt halt, her hands on her hips. Nadine didn’t need to see her face to know she was smirking.
“Chloe, my dear.” Sully sat at the bar, looking like he’d been settled in for hours now, which might explain the shrieking they had heard.
Nadine lowered her gun and walked in more calmly than she felt. Chloe dashing off like that had set her heart racing. Charlie was stood behind the bar pouring himself a pint from one of the taps. He acknowledged Nadine with a cheery nod as he expertly poured a pint. Sam was sitting on a stool behind Sully sipping on a drink. He looked pale and a little spooked.
“Was that Sam screaming like a child?” Nadine checked the safety was on then tucked her gun into her belt. She’d left the holster in the bedroom. Sloppy. Unprofessional. She was slipping.
“That was very manly shout of surprise,” Sam said.
“What are you doing here you old fox?” Chloe asked. Her voice had gone all silky smooth and she sauntered up to Sully. He put an arm around her waist and offered his cheek and she dutifully planted a kiss there.
“What, I can’t pay a visit to one of my favourite gals?”
<em>Not Sully too…</em> Nadine bit down on her annoyance. Bad enough that she had to put up with Charlie. She didn’t want to think of Sully like that. She knew that he was smooth. Half the time she had crossed his path in the past he’d had at least one woman who was far too young for him hanging off his arm. She didn’t want to think that Chloe might once have been one of those women.
To her annoyance Chloe stayed beside Sully, her arm draped over his shoulders and his arm still loosely around her waist.
Nadine sat on the stool next to Sully, spinning to face him. “I thought you weren’t getting directly involved?”
“It’s good to see you Ms. Ross.” Sully raised his glass to her. “You’re looking well. The change in career suits you.”
Despite her irritation Nadine smiled. Sully had a gift for smoothing over all conversations and situations. She had been on the opposite end of more than a few of his ventures and no matter what had transpired, no matter what mayhem he had been responsible for with her former men, she couldn’t help but like him. He was the height of professionalism.
Shame the professionalism hadn’t rubbed off on either of the Drake brothers.
“Thank you.” She nodded at him then turned to Charlie. “Pour me a scotch.”
 “On the rocks?”
She shook her head. Charlie grabbed a tumbler and slopped scotch in it without measuring; he slid it across the bar to Nadine. She caught it and lifted it to her lips, not quite sipping, just letting it tingle and getting a feel for it.
“Sully was the one who told me about this job,” Sam said. He had swivelled round on his stool too, but he was mostly blocked from Nadine’s view by Sully and Chloe. She could only make out his skinny arms waving about.
“But he told me that he was just playing information broker this time,” Chloe said. “Something about being too old. Retirement. Working on his tan.”
“Whoa, whoa, I never said I was too old. Just that this seemed like a game for you young ‘uns.”
“Young?” Nadine repeated. “Have you looked at Sam lately?”
 “Hey!” Sam cried.
Sully laughed. “Fair point. I’d say Sam isn’t far off giving me a run for my money as a silver fox but it looks more like he’ll be joining Charlie.”
“What? No!” Sam starting feeling up at his hairline.
“Oi, this do takes a lot of upkeep.” Charlie pointed at his shiny smooth head.
“We can discuss our beauty routines another day,” said Chloe. “We all know Charlie takes the longest to do his hair - “
 “True.” Charlie nodded.
“- but we’re short on time. Presumably you’ve come to help us, Sully.”
“That I have my dear.” He dropped his arm from Chloe’s waist and - with a flick of his wrist - produced an envelope from seemingly nowhere. “Viktória and Tamas are having a little get together at their manse. Very posh. Very exclusive.”
“Why?” Charlie crossed his arms, squinting suspiciously.
“To celebrate brothers in arms. A feast for the very best treasure hunters in the business.”
Chloe, Sam and Charlie all started loudly protesting in chorus. Naturally they all thought they were the best in the business. Nadine rolled her eyes and sipped her scotch. It wasn’t surprising that none of them had received invites. This was a dinner and evening for those who owned the artefacts and treasures, not those who scrabbled around in the dirt finding them. It had been the same when she was a mercenary. The congratulations and pomp was for the general, the officers and the clients not the grunts. She had always made sure she picked one man from her regular ranks to attend, someone who had stood out and proven themselves. It was a simple way to bolster and reward loyalty.
“There’s more to this,” Nadine said. Sully met her gaze and nodded.
 “There is.”
“To judge the competition,” Charlie said.
“Bingo!” Sully raised his glass to Charlie.
 “Too dangerous,” Nadine said immediately.
“You never let us have any fun and this sounds like fun.” Chloe’s eyes were gleaming. “When’s the party?”
 “Tomorrow night.”
“Shit. So soon? Doesn’t leave a lot of room for planning.” Chloe chewed on her thumb nail. “We need to scope the place out, get hold of the guest list, maybe a floor plan.”
“What exactly is in the envelope, Sully?” Sam asked. He leaned on the bar and reached for the envelope in Sully’s hands. Just before his fingers so much as brushed it Sully whisked it away. He stepped back from them, smiling smugly.
“You’ve got an invite? You wily old badger!” Chloe cried.
“Badger?” Sully put his hand to his chest. He might actually have been offended by that one. Who’d have thought he’d be so sensitive about what animals he was compared to? What was wrong with badgers? “Keep that up young lady and I won’t invite you to be my plus-one.”
“You glorious cunning silver fox.” Chloe changed tact immediately. “Have I told you how magnificent your moustache looks recently?”
“You haven’t.” Sully stroked his moustache proudly. “I was thinking maybe I would take a different lady with me. One with elegance and class.” He turned to Nadine and sketched a bow, a twinkle in his eye. “What do you say, milady? Care to make an old man look good?”
“I’m flattered,” Nadine said. She was surprised to find that she actually was flattered. Foolishly perhaps it was because she had been feeling so left out of this whole adventure that she was thrilled to finally be included. Or maybe even she wasn’t immune to Sully’s charms, despite there being absolutely nothing about him that made him attractive to her. “But this sounds like the kind of occasion where I would have to wear a dress and I don’t wear dresses.” She would kill to see Chloe in one. “And if you’re playing the part of an old man with a younger woman then Chloe would be the better choice.”
“And maybe you don’t take a woman who have bigger muscles than you,” Sam said. Charlie laughed.
“The problem with you gentlemen is that you never learnt to appreciate a woman who can bench-press you.” Sully turned back to Nadine. He kissed the back of her hand and winked at her. “Perhaps next time.”
“If you’re done,” Chloe practically growled. Nadine looked up in surprise. Chloe was glaring at Sully; her eyes burning, her jaw clenched. “We have a small window here. And I still need to get a dress. Fancy helping me pick one out, china?” Her tone didn’t have its usual playful edge. No tease, no flirt, it was sharp as a serrated blade.
“Uh, sure.” Nadine shrugged. She couldn’t remember the last time she went clothes shopping. When she’d fronted Shoreline she’d had people to do that for her. She turned to Sully. “What’s eating her?” She asked quietly.
“My dear, she is too easy.” He patted Nadine’s hand. “Right!” He dropped Nadine’s hand and stepped back from her. “I’ve arranged for a car so we’ll need a driver. Not you Chloe, you sit in the back with me. Charlie, you look like a man who needs something to do.”
“Right. I’ll start working on me chauffeur act.”
“You’ll need something to wear,” Chloe said. “All the rich people in this city we’re bound to lift a chauffeur’s uniform from somewhere.”
“And we’ll need a body guard,” Sully said. “I already checked and all the other guests are bringing one so we’d be remiss not to bring one ourselves.”
 “Ooh!” Sam perked up.
“Ms. Ross,” Sully said all silky smooth charm again. “I’m almost certain that a humble gent like me couldn't afford your rates but I would be both delighted and honoured if you would watch my back.”
“I’ll put it on your tab and you can pay me back later.” Nadine crossed her arms. Having Sully owe her a favour would come in handy. She understood that this was a gesture from Sully, a little nod of acceptance into their group and way of life. She watched as his eyes flitted from to Chloe and back again, a knowing smile tugging at his lips. It helped that he knew that there was no chance Nadine would let Chloe go into that vipers nest without her. He was unusually perceptive for a man.
“What am I supposed to do?” Sam whined.
“Oh, I’m sure you’ll find some way of getting yourself in,” Sully said. “You usually do.”
Chloe took Nadine’s arm and gently led her away from the others. “While you gents sort yourselves out Nadine and I are going to go shopping.”
Nadine quickly chucked back the last of her scotch - she was going to need it - and let Chloe lead her out of the room.
  /\/\/\
Nadine was a planner by both nature and design. Her father and mother had been the most organised people she had ever known, who had planned their lives down to the fine detail. When they had married apartheid had ended but the shadow of it had still loomed over them. Their planning, working out their relationship and how it would function, how it could survive under the restrictions imposed on them and in the face of such adversity had saved both their lives. They had mapped out every possible obstacle they could face and come up with counter measures.
The biggest upset to their plans had been Nadine herself. They had wanted children, but she had come along earlier than planned and she knew her father had wanted a son to continue his legacy but a difficult birth had meant that Nadine would be the only child he would have. For the beginning years of her life he had just treat her as the son he had so clearly wanted. It hadn’t been until she was older that he had realised that a daughter faced challenges a son would never have to deal with. To his credit he adapted, he changed how he would teach her, expanded his own knowledge, and most importantly he had listened to her. His word had been final but he had taken the time to hear what she had to say. She had always known her worth to him as both a soldier and as his daughter. In return she had followed her parents plan for her.
It was amazing that she had never grown to resent him.
Amazing that she was so much like him. She had never had a rebellious phase growing up. She had been the dutiful daughter right up until she had met Chloe. Still trying to do right by her dead father and his legacy. Chloe had upended all of that and Nadine was happier than she’d ever been. That little bit of chaos in her otherwise perfectly planned life.
But just because she appreciated that bit of chaos didn’t mean she had to like it when Chloe and her cohorts came up with terrible plans on the fly.
“What do I have to do to make you stop frowning?” Chloe had gone so far as to buy Nadine ice cream. Nadine just clutched her cone in hand and looked at the people walking past. It was the end of November and definitely not the weather for ice cream. It was warmer here in Provence than it would ever be in London but by Nadine’s standards it was a little chilly. “You know we’re near Cannes, right?” Chloe continued. She licked her ice cream, one long stripe from the bottom of the rounded scoop up and around to the tip. It was the most erotic thing Nadine had seen in months. “We might see a celebrity.”
“Wrong time of year.” Nadine tried her ice cream. She’d gone for blueberry and vanilla, Chloe had insisted in drowning it in chocolate sauce and it made for an interesting taste. Not sure she’d have it again. “So, this seems more your area of expertise, where do we get you a dress.”
“Dunno.” Chloe had ice cream on her lips. She pulled her phone from her pocket and started fiddling with it. “I’m not much of a shopper myself. I briefly dated a girl who was really into shopping. This was years ago mind, back in Australia. She could spend hours trying on clothes. Being young and stupid I went along with her and sat nice and quiet.”
“Quiet? You?” Nadine scoffed. “Not bloody likely.” She didn’t look at Chloe; instead she concentrated on her ice cream. For all of Chloe’s less than subtle flirtations she had thrown Nadine’s way this was actually the first time Nadine had conformation that Chloe’s taste also ran towards women. She had been running on the presumption that Chloe was straight. She had seen Chloe flirt with women before but that meant nothing, Chloe flirted with her own reflection and statues, occasionally with cliff faces and on one occasion with a post box. Chloe didn’t know how not to flirt. All the exes they had run into there had not been a single woman among them.
But then Chloe had said it herself: not many women in this line of work.
Nadine tried to stop the fizzle of excitement at this little bit of news. It might mean nothing. One woman in a sea of men - men that Nadine had to run into constantly - might only mean a brief moment of experimentation. Nothing to get giddy about.
“Alright! This way!” Chloe pointed dramatically with her ice cream.
 Nadine followed dutifully behind her.
They’d finished their ice creams by the time they’d reached the store. Nadine could smell the expense from outside. There were two dresses on display in the large windows, both tiny and designed for a woman so skinny that she might need medical attention. Nadine wouldn’t be able to get her leg in one of those.
“Those are sleeves not dresses,” she remarked.
Chloe eyed the dresses and wrinkled her nose. She turned to Nadine. “You ever see Pretty Woman?”
 “No.”
“Not surprising. We’re gonna watch it when we get back home. But there’s a scene where Julia Roberts tries to buy a dress while shopping on Rodeo Drive and the woman in the store takes one look at her and just knows that she doesn’t have the money to pay for anything in there and, like, kinda, shoos her away. Anyway, I think we’re about to get vamoosed out of here.”
Nadine looked down at her clothes, crisp pants and a loose fitting shirt with a jacket over the top, she looked reasonably presentable. She looked over at Chloe. “If Julia Roberts didn’t have the money why did she go into the store?”
“Well she did have money. Richard Gere gave her the money. You know what?” Chloe stepped towards the door. “We’ll see if we can get hold of it to watch tonight. It’s terrible. You’ll hate it.” She opened the door with a flourish. “Let's do this thing, china.”
If Nadine had thought the outside reeked of expense it was nothing compared to the inside. The floors were polished marble and everything was pristine white. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling giving off low light. There were very few clothes on display, but the ones that were there cost more than most people would earn in a year. More than most people would earn in their entire lives. Once, back when she’d had Shoreline, Nadine could have just walked in here and bought whatever she wanted. She’d had that kind of money then. She had always been frugal with her money, something she knew her lieutenants and men had respected. But it was an interesting fantasy to briefly indulge in: swaggering in here with Chloe and tossing down her card, telling Chloe to buy whatever she wanted. As though Chloe gave a toss about fashion or would be impressed by flashy shows of wealth.
Nadine snorted softly at the thought just as a very well-dressed woman sauntered up.
<em>“Puis-je vous aider?”</em> she asked, politely.
“Yes,” Chloe answered, her fake British accent making a comeback. “I have a dinner to attend tonight and I find myself in need of a dress.”
“Of course,” the assistant said, switching effortlessly to English. “What do you have in mind?”
Chloe flashed a grin Nadine’s way. “Something in red.”
It didn’t take long for Nadine to grow bored. She sat on a ridiculously comfy white leather seat with a glass of champagne in one hand, fiddling with her phone, trying to research Tamas and Viktória Cseszneky. They had a few tabloid appearances, photos of them leaving events, galas and openings, always flanked by security. They were both beautiful, fashionably slim with dark hair and pale skin, their outfits tailored to play off of each other. In all of the photos they were wearing over sized sunglasses hiding their faces.
“This one?” Chloe walked out from the enormous dressing room to show Nadine what she was wearing. Chloe had only managed to try on three dresses before she had shooed the assistant away. Now Nadine was stuck being the one to give her opinion on what Chloe should be wearing. The appeal of seeing Chloe in a dress was fast running out.
Nadine gave it a once over. “Too long. Too narrow. It’ll inhibit the movements of your legs.”
Chloe looked down and frowned. “And we don’t want that.”
How to explain that the dress they needed had to not only look good but also be functional in a way that Chloe would be able to run, jump and even climb in it? They hadn’t even started on what shoes she should wear yet.
Chloe disappeared back into the dressing room. “We need to think about what you’re going to wear as well.”
“What?” Nadine looked up from her phone. “What I’m wearing?”
“Well, you can’t go wearing <em>that</em>. And definitely not your combat stuff.”
Stupidly Nadine hadn’t even considered that she’d need to buy something. Stupidly she’d been thinking that a shirt and a pair of her smarter combat pants would be enough. <em>Stupid, stupid, stupid…</em>
“Oh! I think we have a winner,” Chloe called from behind the closed door. “C’mere and give me a hand, will you?”
Nadine pushed herself to her feet. She pocketed her phone and knocked back the champagne, grimacing at the taste. She never had liked the stuff. She left the empty flute on the table and moved cautiously to the door, pushing it open. Chloe had her back to her and was busy trying to pull her dress into place. Nadine swallowed the gasp that nearly escaped her lips. The dress had thin straps and showed off Chloe’s shoulders and her upper back. She could make out the faintest of nicks and old faded scars along her skin, rippling in the light as Chloe struggled with her dress. Chloe wasn’t as built as Nadine was but this dress left no doubt to the impressive muscle tone she sported. The dress was a deep red, bunched up around her mid section where Chloe fussed with it. One of the straps over her shoulder was twisted.
“Here,” Nadine said softly, too softly. She cleared her throat harshly, reaching towards the strap, ignoring the way her hand trembled. She righted the strap trying not to touch Chloe’s skin. She forced her mind into professional mode and quickly tugged where the fabric bunch on Chloe’s hips pulling the dress into place. She stood up and looked. The dress was beautiful, made all the more perfect for the body it clung to. It was longer on one side, showing off Chloe’s right leg up to her mid-thigh. Nadine’s gaze trailed down wards to Chloe's bare feet, then from her ankle and back up Chloe’s long muscular leg to where the dress covered her flesh and then, because she was weak, to Chloe’s arse. Her mouth had gone dry. There wasn’t a chance in hell Chloe was going to pick out a dress that didn’t show off her arse.
“Ja, I think this is the right one,” Nadine said. Her throat was so dry her voice creaked. She stepped back from Chloe. Back to safely. To a distance where she wouldn’t be burned.
“I think…” Chloe said slowly. She cocked her head to the side, her eyes narrowing. She reached up and pulled out her hair band and worked her fingers into her hair, mussing it up and letting it fall haphazard about her shoulders. “Oh yeah, that’s better.” She spun around and grinned at Nadine.
“Sure.” Nadine took another step back colliding softly with the closed door. “You look fantastic. Now all we need are shoes.”
 “And something for you.”
Nadine sighed. “Ja. Something for me.”
“Don’t sound so defeated. I’ve already got it all worked out.” Chloe gave her a wink. “I’m gonna enjoy dressing you up, love.”
Nadine rubbed her forehead with the back of her hand. Swallowed. She put her hands to her hips and tipped her head back to look at the ceiling. “How are we paying for this?”
Chloe laughed wickedly. Like a magician she flicked a card from seemingly nowhere. “By using the generous bank of Victor Sullivan.”
 “You swiped his card?”
“Of course I did,” Chloe said like it was the most obvious thing in the world and Nadine was stupid for not doing it herself. “Now let’s grab me some shoes and then I get to dress you up.”
It was going to be a long day.

Nadine couldn’t sleep. The bed was wrong, the room was wrong, this whole damned job was wrong, and she couldn’t find the words to convince Chloe of this. What was the point in taking a job that had no obvious payday? It was as though Chloe, Sam and Charlie were doing it just to stoke their egos. Nadine had yet to meet to a treasure hunter who needed a boost to their already over inflated ego.
Her eyes felt gritty and sore, she rubbed them as she stared up at the canopy of the luxurious four-poster. The more she rubbed them the worse they felt but she couldn’t help it, her usual discipline had gone out the window and bad habits were emerging. She shuffled on the mattress, trying not to jostle it too much and wake Chloe.
Chloe snored softly next to her oblivious to Nadine’s inner turmoil. Nadine had never told Chloe that she snored. It was oddly endearing.
It was worse if she slept on her back; fortunately tonight she was curled on her side, her back to Nadine, her hair pulled back in a loose ponytail spilling over the crisp white pillowcase her head was nestled on. The bed sheets were pushed down to Chloe’s midsection and the top of her back was exposed. She slept in a loose fitting tank top and shorts. Her shoulders exposed for Nadine to see in the dim midnight light. She could count the notches of Chloe’s spine; see the worst of the scars roughly two inches along and far too close to Chloe’s spine for comfort. It looked as though it had been deep, likely a stab wound. The mark was shiny and pale, standing out from the darker tones around it, dipping into Chloe’s skin and flesh. Nadine wanted to trace it with her thumb, to feel the smoothness of the skin around it. Her stomach felt tight. She wanted to worship that sign of violence as much as she wanted to know who had done it to her, wanted to exact revenge and pay back the hurt.
She ran her fingers across the scar along her collarbone. It had been the first time she’d nearly died, the first time panic had cut through her arrogance and made her realise that she wasn’t invincible. It had been a valuable lesson.
Funny how Chloe sometimes made her feel like that. Like she had when the blade had first cut into her and she’d felt her blood flow free and her breath disappearing with it. But also the rush of adrenaline as she fought back and the kick when she’d realised she was going to win.
Chloe shifted in her sleep, rolling onto her back. Her arm fell beside Nadine’s, their skin just barely brushing.
Nadine blew out a breath and rolled out of bed. She grabbed her hoodie and pulled it on, her bare legs sticking out from the bottom. She moved quickly and silently from the room and down the stairs, to the kitchen. She couldn’t sleep so she might as well be useful. A drink and then she would do more research on the Cseszneky family. She’d fired off a couple of emails earlier to old contacts to see if she could find out who handled their security. Best that she knew who she was up against.
There was a light on in the kitchen. She slowed her movements, listening for anything out of the ordinary. The light was low, not the main ceiling light but one of the smaller ones. Nadine moved slowly up to the doorway and paused again. She couldn’t hear a thing. It might have been a mistake, a simple accident that Charlie or Sam had left the light on.
She edged round the doorway, keeping to the shadows. Someone was sitting at the kitchen table. Their head hung low, skinny shoulders hunched up. She relaxed.
“Can’t sleep?” She flicked on the main lights and watched as Sam recoiled, blinking furiously at the sudden illumination.
“Jesus!” he rubbed his eyes. “Why would you..? My eyes!” He rubbed at them and then squinted at her.
She went to the appliances and set about making her green tea. Behind her she could hear him still moaning. “What are you doing up?” she asked.
“Couldn’t sleep. The bed’s too comfy.”
“Ja.” Nadine turned round and leaned on the counter eyeing him. His hair was straggling and hanging in his face, his eyes bleary and skin waxy. He didn’t look well. “Are you sick?”
He shook his head. “Just antsy from being in a weird place. S’pose you can sleep anywhere?”
“If that were true I wouldn’t be down here.”
“Right. So what’s keeping you up?”
She narrowed her eyes. “We don’t have the sharing kind of relationship.”
“Monsters in the closet?” he smiled at her. “Big bad general Ross afraid of the dark?”
“Keep guessing.” She turned back as the kettle whistled. She poured the water into a mug and watched the tea bag bob about in it, slowly changing the water from clear to murky. She jabbed the bag with a spoon. She liked her tea strong.
 “Chloe snoring?”
She paused. Paranoia itched at her fingertips. How did he know Chloe snored? She wasn’t especially loud; it was more cute little snuffles, so he couldn’t possibly have heard her through the bedroom door. The only reason she knew was because when they were on jobs they more often than not wound up sharing a room. Back in London, in Chloe’s flat, they had their own rooms.
She stabbed at the tea bag with a spoon. “No.”
“I’m just gonna keep guessing till you tell me.”
“I don’t hear you offering up explanations why you can’ sleep.”
“I told you: bed’s too comfy.”
She turned round and stared at him. “Sleep on the floor.”
He faltered under her steady gaze, his shoulders hunching further as he looked down at his hands resting on the table. She hadn’t noticed when she’d first walked in but there was an open bottle of scotch on the table and a glass. Nadine fished out the teabag and dumped it on the edge on the sink. She picked up another glass for herself and made her way over to join him. They had a mission to do and she couldn't have Sam wigging out and blowing it for them. Time to be the adult and talk him down from whatever edge he was on.
“Your right, the bed is too comfy.” She sat down, placing her tea and the empty glass carefully on the table. She picked up the bottle and inspected the label. It was a cheap store brand. She poured them both a generous measure. “What’s going on?”
 “Nothing.”
“If you’re not up to this job then I need to know.”
He reared back. “This is my gig. I found this job.”
“I don’t give a shit. If you’re not up to it then you need to step back, otherwise your putting the whole mission in jeopardy.”
“Who says I’m not up to the job? You don’t get to decide that.”
Slowly Nadine lifted her glass to her lips and poured the cheap scotch back. She put the glass down, still deliberately slowly, and left her finger resting on its rim. She regarded Sam. To his credit he didn’t wither under her scrutiny, she had known men twice Sam’s size to cower when she stared at them flatly. He slouched in his seat; his arms folded and looked back at her like a petulant school boy.
“Ja, I do get to decide that.” She tipped her head to the side and didn’t so much as blink. “If whatever shit your going through endangers Chloe then I will forcibly bench you.”
“Consider myself warned.” He held his hands up and rolled his eyes. He knocked back his scotch and poured another glass. “It’s really not that big a deal. I spent years sleeping on a metal slat. I can’t sleep on beds; I can only just about manage couches. And I can’t…” he trailed off, sneering. “I can’t sleep in the same room with another person. Prison makes you kind of paranoid about that kind of thing.”
 “You had a cellmate.”
“And he was a real peach let me tell you.” He curled his lip and knocked back another scotch.
She eyed him. He was a liar by nature, almost as good a manipulator as Chloe was, but this time he was being honest. She nodded. “Okay. Just don’t let your shit become our shit.” She stood up with her cup in hand and made her way from the kitchen. This had been too close to a heart-to-heart for her taste.
“I’m not going to let anyone hurt your girl.”
She froze. The hair on her arms was standing on end and she felt suddenly cold. “She’s not my girl.”
“But you want her to be.” She could hear the smug smirk in his voice. He laughed softly. She couldn’t hear anything malicious in it, just pleased amusement, and that made it so much fucking worse. She turned slowly. He was still in his seat, arms loose at his sides and a crooked smile carving up his face. “I fuckin’ knew it!” He clapped his hands together gleefully.
“You don’t know anything,” she said icily.
“I know the only reason your doing this job is because of her.”
 “We are partners.”
“Hey I don’t blame you. You ask around and damn near everyone who’s worked with Chloe is half in love with her. Or… y’know… dead. There’s only Nathan and Charlie who survived her.”
“You still seem to be breathing.” He kept talking and she’d fix that.
“She’s not my type. But you should go for it.”
“I’m going to walk away now.”
“I’m just saying you’re getting all bothered about my shit but maybe you should be looking closer to home. ‘Cause I don’t think I’m the one whose baggage is going to be causing problems.”
She walked away from him, determined that she wouldn’t let him get under her skin. He was just being childish. He was rattled by what she had said and was hitting back. She forced her head up and her shoulders back, walking slowly so he knew that his words hadn’t bothered her. But they had. She felt the knot of worry in her chest. Felt the way it burned there, heavy, working its way up her throat. She swallowed a mouthful of tea to try and wash it away. She hated that he was so perceptive, that he had read her so easily. She hated more that she had been so weak as to let him bother her.
She stalked up the stairs taking them two at a time. There was a shadow at the top and she stopped suddenly, her tea slopping over the rim of her cup and splattering to the floor.
Chloe stared down at her, eyes wide. She put her hands to her hips and smiled. “There you are.”
“Just went to get a drink.” Nadine’s heart was hammering against the knot of worry. She felt a little sick.
“Well you’ve got it so come on, let’s back in bed.” Chloe turned and headed back to the bedroom. Nadine followed after her like the good little heartsick puppy Sam thought she was.
Chloe climbed back on the bed, yawning hugely. She dropped back on the pillows and patted the space next to her. Nadine set her mug down on the bedside table and got on the bed. She propped her pillows up and lay back against them.
“I know you’re still not sold on this job,” Chloe said. “And I don’t blame you. Here’s a deal. We check out this little party tomorrow and if after that this still seems like a bust we’re out.”
“You mean it?” Nadine turned to her.
“Yeah. It’s not like we’ve been offered a definite payday.” Chloe slid down the bed and pulled the sheets up. “Now go to sleep. You’re worrying is far too loud and it’s keeping me awake.”
“I’ve just got to check my emails.” She grabbed her phone and opened an email sent from one of her contacts, it was titled: Cseszneky security.
She read over the brief email and then again. “Oh shit,” she said softly. Why could these jobs never be simple and safe?

My dad is abusing me part 4
I can’t hardly believe what’s happened in recent events. My dad phoned me, so naturally I pretended to not be here and did not asnwer. He then sent me a txt message asking me to come over so I could sort out my suit. A suit for what? He’d decided I was going to his wedding as an usher. Didn’t even ask first. And he knows I have speaking problems so, an usher? Is he senile already??
Anyway I told him no, I told my sister too who was nosey enough to ask. I told me sis I couldnt go because I am an alcoholic. I’m not, but it felt like a good reason. I couldnt do that with my dad, giving him something to lecture me about? No thanks. So I just said I’d considered it and it wouldn’t work out.
Then my youngest bro who lives with my dad begins chatting with me. We talk and he’s doing well. The wedding comes up and we talk about it. I eventually bring up some issues I have, like how my partner is never invited, which kinda seems like there’s some prejudice going on. Apparantly my dad is just dum and thought my partner was just “a friend”. It doesn’t help that it’s not easy to explain my relationship with them. But we’re family without a doubt, and I love the heck out of them. But that’s enough about that, this post is meant to be about bad people, so back to my dad...
He started to seem less bad, and more stupid as things went along. Eventually the main topic came up. My dad owes me £3000. He’s got spending problems, so even though he has a very good job, he never has any money. I am the opposite of him in so many ways. I’d get money in a card from my grandparents to spend on what I want for my birthday and such. I never spent that money. I saved it. I was a very boring child. I then got a job at an Amazon warehouse. And yes it’s as bad as the rumors say. But not the first week. That first week they make it so easy that it’s actually fun. Then they make it harder and harder until it’s not doable anymore... Yeah you can just look up other people’s stories on that. It was hell. And deserves it’s own post. My dad is only relevant to the day I got fired.
That story, to keep it short went like this: I called in sick, because, I was sick. At about noon I got up out of bed to have something to eat and drink, and felt a bit better. My dad sees me and forces me into the car and drives me to my workplace. I don’t have a choice. I get in and walk right into my boss. I have never forgotten the look he gave me. “So you think you can just come and go when you want do you?” he asked me. What kind of person calls in sick and then shows up late instead? It looked to him like I just didn’t want to go in so early. It was because of that moment that my scanner never got upgraded like everyone elses did. I was told not to worry about the extra training session. I didn’t realise how clear it was at the time that this was the moment they decided to fire me. They gave me only a week after that day i think to keep working, all the while talking bad about my performance and how I needed to improve or else.
Sorry for that detour, but my dad got me fired from that job. And he’s never once helped me get a job before or since. But I had earned myself a nice amount of cash over these years. I earned a nice sum. My dad had many moments where he struggled. But I knew he was a bad spending since he bankrupt us back when he was living with my mum. It was cars that did it.
I don’t think he ever asked me for money. Instead it was just an “I’m sorry”. Naturally I said “I can lend you some money”. I don’t know if i fell for the bait, or if he really didn’t expect this. But I lent him money, and he promised he would pay me back. He was very grateful and aksed that I not tell anyone about this, since he’d feel so ashamed to have to borrow from his son. So, I kept it secret.
As time went on more things happened. His car had troubles and needed to be fixed, so I lent more. He couldnt pay the phone bill, so I lent more. He needed eggs for dinner, so I went out and paid for them. With the food I was always the one he sent to go buy it, and I’d often pay for it too, but he was meant to pay me back whatever it ended up being afterwords. I wrote this amount down, and I didn’t mind if a few were forgotten or he didn’t have the money at the time. I just kept the recipt for next time. These began to build up really badly. And before I knew it, he owed me over £3000. He never paid any of it back. Not until I moved out and tried to get him to.
So after I did leave, something I got no help with from him, because... Well I did it in secret. I saw a chance to get away from him and took it. Thank GOD I did. I was deeply depressed and my dad was against me taking anti-depressants. I was already on some, but had been calling them sleeping tablets to stop him from getting angry. Technically, they do make you drowsy, so it wasn’t quite a lie. But they did nothing for my depression. Which was at it’s breaking point. I moved out to a place only 10 minutes drive away. I regret being so scared to move further away. But this was my first time on my own. And I’ve got a few difficulties too that made it scarier.
During this time I struggled with rent far worse than i imagined. I asked my dad to help and he’d pull out £20 or one time £80 to help. I got whatever was in his pocket. And then one month he says “Don’t ask me for anymore money, not until October. I have it already all tied up in other things, sorry.” and so I stopped asked. October came, which was 4 months or more from then. And I forgot totally at this point to bring it up again. And so for another year I didn’t ask. And then another year. And in all that time he never once offered to pay me back. Never since this payment began growing did he ever offer to pay me back. He did offer to take me on holiday and said I could go for free, but, he’d not owe me anything anymore. It was a tempting deal, but I didn’t really like France that much. I said no.
Time went on and I heard abotu him going on holiday more and more, and buying new things, more cars. He had money to spare afterall, but still offered me nothing. Eventually our landlord decided to raise our rent by £100 a month. We were already overpaying for that crappy little place, and it wasn’t a case of “should we?” but “can we?”. And we could not. Oh “we” by the way is my roomate. The “partner” I mentioned earlier. So we had to move, and found a place 2/3 the cost and 3/2 the size much further away. It was a fantastic deal and we moved in.
My dad helped us move, by costing us around £1000. Because he did things cheaply, and told us to do things we werent allowed to do and got us fined. That needs it’s own post too. The damage he cause us is not something I added to the amount he owes though. I chose to just, not bring up that day at all.
So in our new place, doing well. Months of joy, when finally our old landlord tells us he’s not giving us our deposit back, but he also wants MORE money for damages. I didn’t even know this was legal to do. He took the deposit, and then a second amount the same. My mum had to come in and haggle for us because we were pretty much in tears over this. She saved us, and paid a lot of it for me. She expected my dad to do the same and save me, because this shock cost came out of nowhere and we were not ready. I dont have the amount on hand, but I recall I had to pay £800 myself, my mum paying more than that. £1500? £2000?
Anyway I ask my dad. Not to pay back what he owes, but to save me from seriously legal troubles. He did not help.
Over the next YEAR I was able to pay my mum back all that I owed her for bailing me out. And now I’m back on my feet, and could survive a shock payment if one somehow appeared. But I think I’m safe from that happening again. I hadn’t even thought about the money my dad owes me for ages now.
But this wedding, and talking to my little bro (yes finally back to the original topic) it came up. And my bro was like “Oh well I can talk to him and get that sorted. I was chuffed and said I’d go to the wedding. My dad is honestly fun to be around when it comes to parties. Well, as long as he’s not sober to be more precise. He was sober at one party, and was a huge killjoy. But it’s his wedding, he’s not gonna be a downer there! I was getting excited to see my whole family there, and have a great time and-
“Oh hey, your dad says he doesnt owe you that anymore.” What? Yeah what I got was a big load of messages from my bro telling me my dad didn’t think he owed me anymore because of things he’d done for me previously. Like some early holidays we went on. He also claimed to have “helped with rent” which was a very confusing thing to read. As if he was doing it periodically instead of the 3 times he did it.
Sadly this got me into venting a bit at how unreasonable it all was. I lost my cool. But I dont regret what i said. I imagined he’d go back and tell my dad and it’d get straightened out. I explained he did not help with rent nor did I owe him for any holidays, since the one time he asked me to pay, I declined.
I get a reply, my bro calls me entitled. Says so what if I paid for food and phone I used that stuff so I should pay for it. I’m in disbelief. He’s my dad, he provides for me. Besides you don’t tell someone afterwords “Oh you have to pay for those years of me helping you out”. That’s what pimps do. Other people probably do that too but I only saw it with pimps in the shows I watch.
So more ranting back that this was nuts, and that I just want my money back. I also lay into my dad’s spending habits, how he always has cash to burn, but never any for me. Fuck sake this wedding he’s having is costing him a hell of a lot more than £3000! Sadly this stuff I tell him is what he focuses on, saying my dad isn’t a bad spender cause he always buys cheap... yeah don’t I know it. Every birthday and Christmas I get a foreign or second hand phone or computer that breaks not long after. He’s a computer.. something. He gets this stuff dirt cheap thanks to his job. I couldnt really argue againt my bro there, but no way is that a positive.
But in al lthis arguing, it’s clear that my little bro has some bizarre ideas in his head if he thinks you can wave away owed money by being nice enough to someone. And he thinks me living with my dad is him being nice. But uh, that’s called being a parent, and it’s require by law. I wasn’t some friend staying there, I wasn’t a roomate. I was living in my dad’s house as his son. Jesus my lil bro is meant to be smart but what a fucking... Oh. He’s paying rent and food costs and all sorts. My dad’s gotten him paying for everything. He actually thinks this is normal. There is no low my dad wont sink to.
I can’t be mad at my bro, but it’s clear now that my dad plans on not paying me back. That’s theft. So, what should I do? I don’t want revenge, I don’t want to cost him anything, and I don’t want to take this to court because I know that could cost me. I’ll give it more time. But I hope he looks at my empty chair whilst he’s getting married and knows this is his fault I’m not there.

Of Crucifixion and Chocolate Cake (Post 82) 4-1-15
“Crucify Him,” we all exclaimed in unison to fulfill our role in the liturgy of Passion Sunday.  It still always bothers me to call for Christ’s torture and execution as if I am an unknowing first century Jew who doesn’t recognize the holy man from Nazareth as Our Savior and the Son of the Living God.  There is but one role in the Gospel for a Bruce Willis or Clint Eastwood type who heroically tries to protect Jesus from the marauding collection of bozos bent on infamously seizing the Lord, binding Him and bringing the Lamb of God before Pontius Pilate for final sentencing.  With regard to action hero parts in the Gospel, St Peter’s sword fight didn’t end well and the first Pope’s script in the next act is extremely undesirable.   Being an anonymous but bloodthirsty extra in the annual pantomime of the Passion is probably just as well.
In an act of cognitive dissonance reduction I convince myself that I am actually like the narrator who omnisciently describes the scene but plays no part in the drama.  Jesus’s actual words stand in opposition to my self-gratifying delusion:
‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’  “So you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.  “Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers. [Matthew 23:30-32]’
I suppose I am a hypocrite to believe that I would have stood with the crowd of disciples on Palm Sunday yelling, “Hosanna,” rather than with the Jerusalem mob a week later asking for the release of Barabbas and the immolation of the Son of God.  In all likelihood I would have missed both the triumphal entrance of Christ riding His prophetically commandeered donkey as well as His trial and sentencing not even seven days following.  I expect I would have most likely been engaged in some type of whatever passed for goofing-off in the year 32 as the Lord was excruciated to save me from my sins. My measure of guilt is filled from the fact that I recognize Christ for who He is and His role in delivering me from my sins, yet I continue to sin nonetheless.
Last Saturday night I found myself sitting next to Father Joseph in a restaurant at a combined birthday party for four friends.  Most of the people present knew that I would be beginning my eastward migration this Wednesday afternoon so it was also an evening of pleasant goodbyes among many people whom I have come to know as friends. It was pure providence that Father Joseph and I ended up sitting next to each other at the table mostly dedicated to the huge and delicious chocolate cake that one of my friends had made from scratch. Outside of brief and anonymous encounters to receive the Eucharist or absolution, there is no reason for Father Joseph to be able to identify Steve Donnelly’s mug shot from a random six-pack picture line-up of IHM male parishioners.  Despite the brevity and lack of intimacy in our relationship, Father Joseph’s thinking continues to have a profound impact on my spirituality.
“Stop giving up chocolate, and give up sinning instead,” I heard him tell the umpteenth person who asked him for a special dispensation for his or her husband or wife to enjoy a heavenly piece of the mocha manna that had been expertly prepared by the purveyor of Travale’s Treats, who bakes delicious cakes to order and advertises on Instagram.  The dessert was extraordinarily spectacular to the extent that I saw four or five members or the restaurant’s kitchen staff queue up at the table to receive a slice of the delightful homage to tiramisu buried in milk chocolate shavings.
The good padre offered his advice with a characteristic twinkle in his eye.  He knew the good people were asking in jest and that everybody present who was abstaining from chocolate or dessert understood the implication of the story of the disciples eating raw wheat on their journey during the Sabbath nearly twenty centuries ago. Lenten mortifications are helpful to Christians as they seek to establish the discipline to avoid sin throughout the rest of the year, but the most pleasing sacrifice is a contrite heart.  In his enigmatic and playful style Father Joseph was encouraging people to go a step deeper in their spirituality.  Fasting from treats is helpful to the soul, but should we default to superficial sacrifices like eschewing éclairs for forty days while our souls continue to marinade in deeper iniquity?
There is a triviality to our modern liturgical observance of Lent that smacks of a Claymation Peter Cottontail cartoon or an inflatable plastic Frosty the Snowman yard ornament.  A good friend of mine told me once about how he worried obsessively about mistakenly eating meat once on a Lenten Friday during a period of his life when his personal behavior was a Golden Corral buffet of a mortal sinning. To his current reckoning his consternation over an inadvertent salami sandwich seems like a delusional caricature of what a Lenten journey should really be.
As a fresh alternative, Father Joseph seemed to be encouraging us to apply the Pareto Principle to our various vices.  By the 80-20 Rule, twenty percent of our transgressions will likely cost us eighty percent of the hell-fire we have reserved in our temporal punishment lay-away account called purgatory.  Whether it is fornication, birth control, pornography or cruelty to animals that is most corrosive to our souls, we ought to give that up first and worry about our donut fetish or our penchant towards profanity during a Lenten season decades hence after we have shored up our more serious misconduct.
It is true that Jesus redeemed our past sins with His sacrifice on Calvary.  His Precious Blood also paid for the future debaucheries that we will likely commit on next Thursday. He also footed the bill for whatever peccadillos we perpetrate on a fall Friday evening in 2035.  Still, the infinite value of His heavenly trust fund for us ought not to encourage us towards complacency with regard to our transgressions.  Our salvation is assured if we accept His free gift, but there is no assurance of our happiness here on earth other than our submission to the Lord and our obedience to His will.  Also we are really only renting our souls and bodies anyway; at some point we will have to return them to the dealership.  Driving God’s property as if we are car-jackers seems extremely ill-advised. Jesus treated his borrowed mule quite responsibly; we ought to consider doing the same with the items over which we exercise stewardship.
If the issue of sin and virtue really boils down to love of God and love of your neighbors versus love of ourselves, Father’s Joseph’s point is that the fulcrum of the biggest danger to our soul is not likely to come packaged in a Krispy Kreme box.  Whatever it is that facilitates our prioritization of self over others is a better subject for our Lenten offering than cake or sweets.  Is what we are watching on television, searching on our laptop or playing on our cellphone placing a barrier between us and those we love including God?  Our priority should be to give up or limit that activity for forty days whether the calendar reads March or October.
In the remaining hours of our desert journey we can still correct our course.  Immediate action is best because nobody has an infinite amount of time to demonstrate that we accept the free gift of our salvation.  Judas Iscariot was offered the same gift that he could have accepted up until the very last second of his life, but that moment comes to each of us not named Enoch or Elijah.  Jesus walked the paths of Galilee and Judea for only thirty-two years.  In reality, we are guaranteed only that we have less time left to us today than we had yesterday.  Easter’s message is resurrection for us as well as Jesus, but the path to the feast lies through the valley of the shadow of death. Let us not transport ourselves to Sunday, without gaining what is to be gained on even the very last of these forty days of voluntary tribulation.  Jesus arose on Sunday with a glorified body, but His wounds from Friday significantly remain for us to regard and respect by curtailing our sins.

Spring Cleaning for Your Budget: 9 Strategies for Organizing Your Finances
I want to like spring cleaning. I go nuts for the New Year and Lent, because I’m all about self-improvement. Similarly, spring cleaning is a time to reorganize and start over in many areas.
But I despise it. I hate any cleaning, really. Folding laundry is about the only thing I do that qualifies as housework.
Lately, however, I’ve been seeing posts about “financial spring cleaning.” Applying spring cleaning to money? This idea is perfect for me! I can work toward self-betterment without having to pick up a sponge.
How to Spring Clean Your Finances and Organize Your Personal Budget
Here are a few ways you can scrub the dirt off your finances this spring.
By the way, you don’t have to take on all nine of these goals. Actually, please don’t! When I read lists like this one, my perfectionism kicks in and I get overwhelmed by how many changes I think I should make.
Just choose one way to clean your financial home this spring. Maybe two ways, if you’re feeling adventurous. Remember, your goal is progress, not perfection.
Start with one small, measurable goal. The sense of empowerment you will experience from being successful in that area can give you the confidence to take on the next small challenge.
1. Reevaluate Your New Year’s Resolutions
Maybe you set financial New Year’s resolutions for 2019. But considering the success rate for resolutions (how’s that exercise program going?), there’s a good chance you’ve let at least one of those goals fall by the wayside.
Resist the urge to see yourself as weak; instead, consider yourself older and wiser. Spring is the perfect time to modify resolutions that weren’t realistic.
So you didn’t make any resolutions? That’s OK. Peruse the rest of the ideas on this list and choose one or two personal spring cleaning goals that feel manageable.
2. Start an Emergency Fund
It’s a common opinion that people should have at least three months’ expenses in savings at any given time. Then if you lose your job or your car breaks down, your life doesn’t suddenly fall apart.
Guess how much money I have in my emergency fund? A whopping $0. Yeah, starting an emergency fund has earned its place at the top of my spring cleaning list.
To start your emergency fund, calculate your expenses for one month. Consider the cost of rent, utilities, transportation, insurance and debt. Don’t forget sneaky expenses such as personal hygiene products.
Then multiply that number by three. That’s how much money you should aim to have in your emergency fund.
Where should you open an account? The key is that you want your money to be accessible in case of an emergency, but not so accessible that you’re tempted to withdraw it when you want to go on a weekend trip with your friends.
I recommend opening a separate savings account with your bank or a money market account. Money market accounts typically require a higher minimum balance, but the interest rate can be higher — which means more money for you!
3. Keep Track of Your Debts
For six months, I was aware that I had debts to repay. I knew that I owed my in-laws money, that my husband had some vague amount to repay on his student loans, and that I had a little credit card debt (although precisely how much was on each of my three cards was a bit fuzzy).
I finally took 30 minutes to create a spreadsheet in Excel listing all our debts, including the grand total. I update that document every Monday.
Seeing everything in print gives me a better idea of where we are financially. And every time that grand total gets smaller, I do a little dance in my chair!
Looking at those numbers every Monday, especially the total, gives me the momentum to keep chipping away at our debt.
4. Sort Out Your Credit Cards
Everyone’s credit card situation is different.
If you have eight credit cards and little willpower, consider canceling a few of those cards. (But first, check how canceling your credit card could affect your credit score. Canceling isn’t always the best idea.)
If you have a low credit score but high willpower, maybe you should get a card and use it responsibly to establish good credit.
I (incorrectly) held the belief that credit cards were pure evil for years. But some credit cards pay you for signing up, hook you up with travel points, or give you extended warranties on certain purchases.
Do your research and find out how you can make credit cards work for you rather than against you. I recently paid off the last of my credit cards that carried a balance. Yay, me! Now I’m trying to decide on my next step.
5. Act to Improve Your Credit
First of all, if you don’t already know your credit score, get a free credit report. If you don’t like what you see, don’t freak out; there are plenty of ways to boost that number!
Simply paying off your debts and paying your bills on time can improve your score. If you’re not sure what’s keeping your credit score so low, check out Credit Sesame. The free site lays out exactly what factors are affecting your credit score and offers advice on how to change them.
A few years ago, I had good credit, but I wanted excellent credit. So I set up a loan with my bank. They gave me $2,000 to pay back over two years. I immediately put that money in a separate account, set up automatic withdrawals and never had to worry about it. (Except when I had to take out money a couple times for emergencies. See why I’m motivated to set up an emergency fund?)
That was the easiest way I could have imagined to improve my credit score. I got it all set up in just one trip to the bank and ended up raising my credit score to 787.
6. Set Short Term Goals for Your Side Hustle
Whether you’re a freelance writer, Uber driver or Etsy shop owner, it’s always good to set clear objectives.
Setting concrete goals has helped me understand my long-term vision for my freelance writing side gig. I created a list of aims, and that document acts as a source of accountability. I look at that list whenever I decide whether to take on a new project.
I ask myself, “Is this decision in line with my goals? Is it helping me move toward my long-term vision?” Setting goals has motivated me to take action.
I now have a couple of steady gigs, so I’ve started setting monthly and weekly financial goals, as well.  With fewer surprises, I can plan for how much of this extra money I want to channel toward paying off my debts.
7. Contribute More to Your Retirement Account
If you’re contributing anything to your retirement account, high five!
But if the very thought of doing financial spring cleaning depresses you, make your “one thing” to bump up your 401(k) or IRA contributions a tad. If you currently contribute 4% of your income, try bumping it up to 5% or 6%. Chances are, your wallet won’t feel the difference. If you find out your budget can’t handle the financial strain, you can decrease your contribution later.
Increasing your contribution by such a small amount may not seem worth it. But don’t forget the power of compound interest!
If you haven’t opened a retirement account yet and don’t know what all these letters mean, don’t panic. Read this simple explanation of a 401(k) and IRA. It’s never too late to start. My mom is kicking herself for putting off contributing to a 401(k) until 10 years ago, but hey, at least she started!
8. Begin Investing
Making your first investment is daunting. Especially if you’re like me and know nothing about the subject.
I urge you to take that leap, though. When you invest, your money makes you more money. There are several ways to take your first step.
My husband and I chose to pass the torch to our financial advisor. We set up automatic withdrawals with his company to put money into our IRAs. Since we are still in the early stages of saving for retirement, once we hit a certain balance in those accounts, our advisor will start making investments from our IRA nest eggs to help the accounts grow. We won’t have to worry at all.
If you don’t want to pay an advisor, ask a family member or friend who understands investing to take you under their wing and explain their strategy.
You can also use apps to get started. We checked them and found the best apps to help you start investing here.
9. Consider Your Insurance Needs
My brother’s apartment burned down at 32 years old, and he lost almost everything. Believe it or not, the exact same thing happened when he was 20! (Neither fire was his fault, by the way.)
While upsetting, the second fire was far less financially devastating because he had renter’s insurance. The insurance company paid for food and a hotel while he looked for a new place to live and gave him $10,000 to replace items lost in the fire.
We like to think we don’t need insurance. Hopefully, we’ll never have to use it. But if you don’t have renter’s, homeowner’s, life or catastrophic insurance (for those of you whose employers don’t offer medical insurance)… seriously look into it.
Of course, not everyone needs all these types of insurance! Carefully review your needs to see which ones you should consider, and which aren’t necessary for you.
Don’t freak out if you haven’t already accomplished all nine of these tasks. That’s what spring cleaning is for! Focus on one thing this season, whether it’s purchasing renter’s insurance or bumping up your credit score. Happy spring!

Car Insurance problem?
Yesterday my dad was in a car crash but thankfully no injury. The victim who crashed into our car had escaped and dashed off bout 6miles. The point of this story? The victim had stolen a car from a rental place and had been driving really fast probably. Figuring that this guy has no money and insurance, can not pay for the damage of my car. (I had bought it about a year ago, and used car) It seems Like we would have to pay 1mill yen (Japan) for this whole crap. Obviously this does not seem right at all, and should not be paying anything at all! Our insurance covers the accidents we get into, but not the damage of our car. So that means, our insurance doesn't cover it, the victims or the company (toyota) might not be covering it either. This case is rare supposedly and we're still figuring it out. And their on a hunt for this guy so hopefully we'll see what he has. Can you hear me out on this one? Can you give me things that might question this case? thnx a lot""

What is the best way to use technology in comparing insurance premiums for MEDICARE costing?
Many of the baby boomer generation will shortly be reviewing insurance costs for our retirement years - health, medical, prescription and the like. We will need to make decisions based upon retirement income and expenses. I have done some preliminary research and it appears I need to do a lot more. The data for health and medical costs is easily available however there is a ton of it. For this reason, I intend to use spreadsheets to crunch through this and any other tech tool I can locate. One of the problems with this approach is that just about every quote is proprietary, that is each quote has its own bells and whistles which make it more or less expensive than the next company. Although I have spreadsheet skills, I can visualize that any template I make must provide for more assumptions than I want to make. From the above it's clear to me that I need some kind of generic (FREE) spreadsheet template that is not proprietary, combines monthly income and expense (insurance premiums counted as expenses), is not locked in terms of making formula adjustments, and has the ability to forecast. If this is as clear as mud to you, welcome to the crowd. Surely, there are fill in the blanks templates dealing with MEDICARE comparative cost determination. If there are and you are aware of them, please let me know. I would be in your debt. Regards, Rich F. Florida""

About Health Insurance?
I just went for a job interview this morning, and it seemed to go well. When I was asked if I had any questions about the company, I inquired about their health plan. She turned a little red and said they offered Blue Cross Blue Shield (not uncommon in my region), but then went on to say The company covers 60% and the employee, 40%). She went on to give an explanation about how BCBS charges the company based on the average age of all employees (which in this company's case, is about 45 or something). Anyway, my question is this: What do you think about that? 60 to 40 equation? How much would I pay for my yearly motorcycle insurance?
Thank you for your time. I am a 18 year old freshman university student living in Canada and I am really interested in buying a new motorcycle. I recently got my M1 and I will be going for my M2 next, so I am still kinda inexperienced. I looked at a few motorcycle websites and a couple of them read that motorcycle insurance is affected by age, experience, driving record, bike engine, etc. I figured that a medium sized engine probably wouldn't cost too much so I looked at a bike with 600cc. I am not worried about the initial cost of the bike since my scholarship money out-pays my tuition and housing by an excess of $4000. Also, I have had no history of accidents in cars or anything. I was wondering, based on my history and my status, what would be a good approximation of the yearly insurance I would have to pay given that I am a student and I am looking at a 600cc bike? What is the average employee portion of a health insurance policy?
What percentage of the health insurance costs do most companies cover (I recognize that this can vary greatly, but I am looking for general numbers)? For Cigna - what is the average monthly cost for a family consisting of parents and one child (likewise, I recognize that this can vary greatly - I am just trying to get a ballpark figure)? I ask these as my current employer (250+ people) is offering Cigna insurance for about $750 a month which covers my wife, myself and my daughter. They claim to be covering 50% of the health insurance plan, but I am having a hard time buying the explanation that health insurance is just expensive...especially as my sister and brother are paying $50-70 a month for individual insurance. I do not want to have to go and get a quote somewhere and can not find a site that has general information like this - any thoughts, advice, sources of information would be welcome!""

This is for a marketing assignment. The business is a small gardening and cooking school for children. There are about 8 staff and activities should be pretty safe, since they're aimed at young people. The business is just starting out. What the instructions mention is: 1.property damage 2. public liability 3. vehicle 4. theft 5. personal disability 6. professional indemnity Kids hire their own bus to come here and staff ust use their own cars to go to and from work, so does the vehicle thing need to be included? The building is just a suburban rental property that costs us $400 rent each week. Also, this is just a minor part of the assignment, so a guess is fine. Thanks for any help!""

""Health insurance for young, healthy people?""
I'm trying to find a health insurance plan made for someone like me- 26, male, non-smoker,non-drinker, currently at ideal weight, regularly exercises, no health conditions, no prescriptions, etc. I mostly want something that'll cover check-ups with maybe a small co-pay, and then has a high deductable for a broken bone/ sports injury etc. Everything available at my job seems to cater to the chronically ill/ older/ heavy prescription user. private plans are to much per month. This is why I decline medical benefits, year after year! I know any of these plans would be helpful in the case of serious injury- just in case. But none seems to offer any tangible benefits like, I don't know, 2 doctor visits a year? Every plan requires that I exhaust my deductable first- I'll never spend 250-1000 a year for doctors visits! I'm guessing, based on cost that a high deductable plan is best for my broken bone scenario- but how can then screw me out of seeing a doctor just to get a check up?""

Why is health care so expensive?
"Why is health care so expensive?
I'm not against tort reform, but I don't buy the malpractice arguments.  I live in TX where the state capped malpractice awards a few years ago, and the costs have only gone down marginally if at all.  I don't think it's malpractice driving the costs, but it may be a factor.  I also think patients need to be protected and have recourse available for a doctor's mistake that might affect their life significantly.

Should I buy car insurance or not?

Why is my insurance so expensive?
I am looking to buy an hyundai coupe 1.6 auto and I am wondering why all my insurance quotes are so expensive. These are my details. 18 years old 0 NCB Full Licence held for 8 months Only need up to 4000 miles a year car is worth 2000 Will use it for Leisure and commuting Only need Third Party Fire Theft Live in the South east, in east sussex I have been speaking to a few people who own these also and they are getting much cheaper quoted than I am getting and they need more than me like they have a 2 litre, 10,000 miles, newer model car like 2002, car is worth more. As an example a person I have been talking to is also 18 and he has got a 2002, 2 litre and his car is worth 6500 and he has a quote for 1000 and that is fully comp. This is a group 10 insurance car. I am 18, I am looking at a 1997 1.6 which is worth 2000 and my quote is 2400 from the same company and mine is a group 9 insurance. I can't seem to figure out why my quote is way above theirs.""

How does a foreigner to the uk get car insurance?
My husband is NOT a uk resident but i am. He is living here in the uk and currently applying to be a uk resident. We are struggling to find car insurance for my husband as main companies like churchills say he has to be a U.K resident. It could take us quite a few years before he becomes a uk resident. Surely business people or visitors to the uk get car insurance or do they all only use car hire? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Why such a difference between insurance quotes on a 2011 Challenger?
I got quotes from Geico, Nationwide, and Progressive I chose full coverage 500 dollar deductible on a 2000 Silverado 1500 4X4 3DR and a 2011 Dodge Challenger SE 2Dr Coupe This is for a 20 year old guy with clean driving record. Why are they so different? These are the prices I got Nationwide - $603 a month Progreeive - $450 a month Geico - $187 a month If Geico didn't offer it for $187 I would not be able to buy the 2011 Challenger. I just rented a car from Budget and it being my first rental, I wasn't exactly sure of all the terms and conditions... unbeknownst to me I could have used my own full coverage insurance with me. I flew out of state and rented a car for the wedding and just assumed I would need to buy their insurance policy, no one ever told me different. I did take my policy with me, but was never asked for that information. Then I get the bill back and they charged me 32.50 a day! Does defective equipment increase insurance rates?
I live in Virginia and it's time to renew my auto insurance policy by the end of this month with Progressive, and I've got a Defective Equipment charge coming back from 3/8/2010 causing my rates to go up. I am not sure why this is causing my rates to go up because its not a moving violation and it carries no demerit points with DMV, its simply an equipment charge. The charge is vague and could mean anything really...from a taillight out, to a hanging exhaust, to a bent wheel, to even a headlight out. I'm going back and forth with the insurance company about this because its rediculous that this kind of charge would cause an increase in my rates. They stated that this info came from a C.L.U.E. report...I know what a C.L.U.E. report is and its pretty much a bunch of reports in one including my Motor Vehicle Report, which is where they are getting the Defective Equipment . I spoke with a lawyer that I know from a few years back on a seperate traffic case, and he even mentioned that he thinks it's a lie to have rates go up for this sort of charge. He also advised to look for different insurance which I would rather not do, simply because it does not seem right and if they raise my rates for it, then they are raising other peoples rates who have the same charge Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.""

Question on best company for classic/historic car insurance?
Our family has had State Farm for 70 years now, several generations, and in the last 10 years or so we have been progressively more & more disappointed in their caring and customer service. Maybe its just the 'assistants' that my local SF agent (who never talks to his clients any more) use, they both seem to have just horrible attitutudes, sarcastic, and act like you are a complete PITA every time you call. I even have an email from his main assistant that I asked her to forward to the actual agent because I was told he was the only one that could answer my question, and just today I was SHOCKED when I re-read the email, and saw in the forward of my email when his assistant sent it on to the actual SF agent, She said This guy will just not give up, he keeps haunting me about this issue! I couldn't freaking believe it. I was going to forward the email to SF headquarters in Bloomington IL, but then as I read more & more about state farm I saw they are completely independent agents in each office, and have literally NO ONE who is their boss or who can reprimand or correct them. This is unbelievable. If I treated my customers at my work place & gave them the rotten attitude treatment we get from our SF office here, I guarantee you I would lose my job. No one is in charge at state farm obviously. Back to my question - I recently bought a classic car I have been looking for a long time - getting it next week - it is 25 yrs old, all original & in perfect shape. My state (Maryland) lets me register the car as Historic if it is 20 yrs old or more. I plan to do this. I contacted my wonderful state farm office today, to get a quote on a new policy/binder for this collectors car. They apparently don't like insuring a vehicle as Historic, maybe the policy is too cheap & they do not make any money off it. The 'assistant' said the best they can do, even if I REGISTER this vehicle in Maryland as Historic & get an Historic tag, which I will do, she said the best she can do is insure it as part time, occasional pleasure use, under 7500 miles a year . Which of course is NOT an historic policy. You can get that on ANY extra car you have in your household even if it is a 2011 model !! She did say (and I understand this being required) that in order to have is classified as Antique/Classic/Historic, you have to have an appraisal done on the vehicle as if it just came off the show room floor -then the premiums would be much lower if you had full coverage on it, as historic/classic . So here we stand. Can someone out there please help me understand - am I being taken for a ride by my State Farm office? Should I shop around for insurance companies that just specialize in Classic/Historic auto insurance? If so can anyone recommend the best companies that specialize in reasonable insurance for classic/historic vehicles? Thanks for your help. .""

Why is health care so expensive?
I'm not against tort reform, but I don't buy the malpractice arguments.  I live in TX where the state capped malpractice awards a few years ago, and the costs have only gone down marginally if at all.  I don't think it's malpractice driving the costs, but it may be a factor.  I also think patients need to be protected and have recourse available for a doctor's mistake that might affect their life significantly.

Where can I get cheap health insurance in NYC as an individual with a relatively low deductible & low premium?
Is that even possible? My reasoning is this: I am 26 and I am self-employed. I am basically just looking for a bare bones plan that will have the lowest premium possible and I actually care more about emergency care than doctors visits. You see, I don't get sick often and don't plan to go to the doctor a whole lot...I just want something in case of an accident and the whole low premium w/ high deductibles thing won't help me...I'll be stuck with a sky high bill to pay off if I stay in the hospital. I'd rather have emergency coverage and simply pay out of pocket for a doctor if I have to. Is there a plan out there in NY that fits this? Anyone know? HELP! I make too much money to qualify for Healthy NY or another low income program..but not enough to reasonably afford a normal healthcare plan when factoring in rent and student loans. (If this isn't a reason for universal healthcare in the US, I don't know what is)""

ING has had a good rating but I think they have just been demoted slightly from AM Best and S&P. Any info I find online for customer reviews are all negative for every company I look at (not a single positive review for any). I'm not quite sure how these rates vary so widely. Do police check with your car insurance to make sure it's valid when you're pulled over?

They claim that if they were to get pulled over, they could continue to use this proof of insurance just as if they were actually still driving legal. Of course this could backfire on them in obvious ways if they were to actually get in an accident, but as far as getting pulled over, would this actually stop them from getting a ticket for no insurance ? How much would you estimate the annual cost of living to be in central New Jersey?
This would be for a simple lifestyle- one bedroom apartment, utilities, food, clothing, phone, internet, cable, basic car, car insurance, gas, car maintenance, computer, pet, gifts, and a one-week basic vacation. You can provide an estimate both with, and without, a basic health insurance plan premium. I am just trying to figure out about how much it would cost to live in this area. Annoying dilemma about factoring age into car insurance rates?
Okay this is annoying me. My car insurance policy is up for renewal very soon. It is a 6-mo policy. I am currently 24 yrs old but turning 25 literally 7 days after my policy renews. As you might know, generally car insurance rates decrease when you turn 25, because 25 is the age threshold that is no longer considered to be a high risk age group. However, my car insurance company insists on rating my entire 6-mo policy as a 24-yr-old...which means that for literally 96.2% of my policy period, I will be 25 yrs old but paying the higher rates of a 24-yr-old. This does not make me feel happy or appreciated. >:( So I was wondering...what would you do? Should I switch insurance companies shortly after turning 25 so that I can get a better rate, and then perhaps switch back to my old company sometime shortly later? Is there a way I can negotiate with a manager so that he/she will re-rate me shortly after my 25th birthday? Thanks for the feedback.""

We signed a lease that required us to take out insurance for $ 500,000 if we used the pool and planned on having guests use the pool also . They also wanted the insurance to cover themselves . When speaking to our insurer, USAA, they said our renters insurance , which included $100,000 liability, would cover us having anyone besides us use the pool or being on our property in general . The landlord was responsible for having insurance for the pool and the house to protect themselves and they told us we were not responsible for paying for insurance for the landlord . The property was in Norfolk VA . We just wanted to know if he landlord was trying to get us to pay for their share of insurance when it wasn't our responsibility and if we were right to have stuck with USAA advice .""
