L’appel du Vide - Arthur

"Tell me, why are we up here again?"

She didn't respond, using her strength to push herself up through the skylight. The ceramic tiles of the roof were cold on her bare feet, the rough texture bumpy under her soles. The wind was much stronger up here than in the gardens, and she held her arms out for balance as she hesitantly stood up.

Arthur watched her through the skylight, and she turned back to him. "Are you coming?" Without waiting for him, she slowly inched her way across, feet sliding slowly over the tiles to keep her balanced. She reached the edge of the roof, only the wrought iron decor on the eaves separating her from a fall to the paving stones far below. 

Her gaze swept across the gardens, and the thickly wooded forest surrounding the mansion, and the glittering lights of the city beyond that. A voice spoke up next to her. "What are you thinking?"

She hummed in thought, gaze focused on the lights far away that reflected in her eyes. The sun was setting, red and orange clouds against a peach sky.

"I want to jump."

Arthur looked at her. "Is it worth it?" Silence. 

Her eyes lowered to the edge of the roof, tracing over the patterns in the wrought iron. The edge of the courtyard peeked out from under the roof, granite flagstones a severe reminder of what would happen should she slip from the edge of the roof... or jump willingly. "Have you ever heard of l'appel du vide?"

The wind tugged at her hair, whipping it around her face; he raised an eyebrow at her. "The call of the void?" She nodded.

"It's the feeling you get when you're in a high place... the urge to jump. Like something is calling you to do it." The last dappled rays of the sun shone through the clouds. Overhead, the stars winked into existence one by one.

"Is that what you feel right now?" Arthur asked. His normally playful voice was serious. She didn't answer. Instead, she continued to stare at the stones in the courtyard below.

"I'm cold." Gingerly, she placed a hand on the roof to steady herself as she turned around in place. "I want to go back inside." She nimbly climbed up the slope of the roof to the skylight. Swinging from the edge of the window, she dropped down into the hallway below.

Arthur followed suit, eyes trained on her slim frame as she strode away down the hallway. "The call of the void, huh?" He murmured. So that was what he felt around her.

The urge to jump.
