Telephone | Sam Winchester #01
I actually wrote this 4 (yes 4) years ago, but I've been thinking about redoing it a little bit and republishing it, hopefully its a little better and everyone enjoys it!
I also have this on Wattpad, link here
Part 2 here
-
Your local library was quiet, yet soft, mumbled words came from all directions at any given time. It was a good quiet, though. So comfortable and calming. You browsed the fiction area looking for information on witches, their spells and origin. Your parents were outlining a mammoth-sized hunt at a rather large cabin in the deep forests of Connecticut.
You were new to this whole thing, but your parents had been hunting their whole lives, they knew letting you grow up in a world where you won't know whether your parents will come back from "work" alive or not was no life to live. As they were careful, they had many hunter friends who would go with one of your parents on a hunt, while the other can look after you without leaving you alone. At the age of 13, your parents asked you if you wanted to join them on your first hunt in Nashville. Of course, you agreed.
You found a witch mythology book in the fiction category, you slid it out of its slot, and managed to pick it up with one hand. You tossed the book a little higher so you could reach your right arm underneath it. It was a heavy book, almost the size of A3 paper. The spine of the book had silver embedded leaves, almost vine-like crawling up the side. The front held a cauldron with three witches gathering around it, the background a deep, crimson velvet red. The title read 'Witch Mythology: Spellbinds and Myths'. You were so captivated by the intricate detail of the book, when at the last minute, you noticed someone on the right, searching for a book. You jump and step back.
"Sorry. I almost bumped into you." You apologise, still remaining quiet. The guy turns around to face you, his grey, almost blue eyes glance into yours. He smiles and looks down at the floor, before returning his eyes back to yours. "It's okay, don't worry." He gives a reassuring smirk, and you smile back. "What are you looking for? I practically live here, so I know where everything is." You chuckle, attempting to not sound too nerdy, but it's true. You spent a lot of your free time here while your parents went away for a weekend or whenever you were bored. He purses his lips together and furrows his brows. "Something about demons, like demonic possession." He struggles to find his words, as if he's confused himself. You slide your book and balance it on one arm, while pointing at the shelf. "Right there." You say, and he nods. "Ah." He chuckles again, picking up the book. "Thank you. It's exactly what I was looking for." He says, scanning the book that you carried. "What's that you got there?"
"A book on witch mythology," You start, frantically trying to think of an excuse to not sound like you're either a weirdo, or a hunter. "It's for my history class I'm taking. It's a weird subject but I don't know, it kinda sounds interesting." You say, focusing your gaze upon his. "History? Where are you studying?" He questions, moving his stance onto his left leg. "Wichita State. Are you studying there too?" You ask him, and he shakes his head. "No, I'm at Stanford. I'm back here in Lawrence to visit family." He says, slowly walking backwards, ushering you to follow, and you comply.
You both sat down at a desk, opposite the bookshelves you were just chatting at. You scoot yourself into the desk, and feel yourself glancing at this tall, strange man as he does the same. "What's your name? I feel bad for not asking." He asks you, and you tell him. "Just Naomi?" he examines your face, as if to find an answer. "Naomi Grace Greaves." You tell him, and he smiles. "Well, nice to meet you Naomi Grace Greaves. I'm Sam William Winchester."
Some time passes and you both agree to talk outside of the library, the main reason of this was due to the librarian having to get up out of her seat every 5 minutes to hush you both and point to the "NO TALKING" sign glued onto the bookshelf. You both go to the reception and apologise, while also getting the book stamped for return in 4 weeks’ time.
You both exited the library walking next to each other, crossing the road and planted yourselves onto a picnic table where you both could talk freely and as loud as you like. Sam is across from you, wearing a light blue flannel button-up with orange accents, with a white t-shirt underneath. 'The colours matched him well, you thought. It allowed his naturally tanned skin to show against the bright white, also bringing out the relucent Olympic blue in his eyes. You force yourself to look away before he's driven to think otherwise. "So, what do your parents do? You said you study at Stanford, which is great, but what did your parents do?" You ask, seeing the question almost burn into his skull. "I just want to get to know you better, that's all." You manage to make out, and he coughs. "My mom died before I was born, my older brother Dean was about 4 years old. I haven't seen my dad for a few months, though. He disappears from time to time. I guess it's from losing mom, he wants to be alone." Sam informs you, and you feel your heartbreak inside. You felt for this guy, even though you met him an hour ago, it already felt like you were best friends, despite even knowing anything other than names. "Oh, Sam, I'm so sorry." You empathise, leaning more towards him."I lost my sister in a car accident when I was 6. She was 14. Jasmine was her name... She ended up in a coma for 4 months and she eventually woke up while my father and I was there, and she kept repeating that she saw black eyes. Black eyes and smoke. She'd say; 'Nai, they had black eyes. Smoke inside of them, Nai. Oh my God, black eyes. It's so scary.' Then..." You stop, glaring down at the picnic table. "She'd pass out. We still don't know if it was due to her comatose or from shock or something. She died 2 weeks later." You sigh, Sam looks at you with bleakness in his eyes. "I'm sorry." Was all that he managed to say, and that was alright.
The pair of you sat there in silence for a few minutes, collecting your thoughts whilst unsure on what to say next. Sams ringtone broke the silence, and he quickly answered his phone. "Hey, Dean." He says, then covering the microphone. "Sorry, one sec." He says, removing himself from the table and walking 3 feet away from where you were. You grin at him, attempting to not listen in to his conversation. Was Dean his brother? Maybe father? You asked yourself, unclear on who Dean was.
"Are you serious?" He exclaims, furrowing his eyebrows. "Look, I'm with a friend, and I-" He motions his hand at you, then smirking. "Okay, Dean. Okay. Okay, okay, give me 10 minutes and I'll be back." He hangs up the phone and makes his way back to you. "Sorry again, it's my brother." He explains, and you nod. "Do you need to be elsewhere?" You try to not pry, while still attempting to get a straight answer. "Yeah, my brother needs me somewhere, so I need to go. What's your number?" He scrambles out of the seat again, and so do you. You pull out your flip phone and tell him your number. He enters the digits and sends a quick "It's Sam" text, before picking up his library book. "Sorry to cut this short but I'll text you when I'm next in town." He grins, walking away. "See you later, Sam." You almost yell, and he waves. "Goodbye, Naomi."
You pick up your mythology book and stare at your phone screen, you changed the 10 digit number to 'Sam W'. You smile to yourself, uncertain on what could unravel with Sam Winchester.
Later on that night, you receive a call from Sam. Your heart felt like it warmed from seeing his name on your screen, and you press answer. "Hello Sammy." You giggle, thinking of the little nickname on the spot. "Ha ha, very original." He says, then chuckles. "What are you up to?" He asks you, and you softly view the contents in your room. "Nothing, why?" You sit up properly on your bed, one hand sandwiched between your thighs. "Just wanted to see if you were free to call, that's all." Sams' end of the call went silent, and you look up at the clock. 9:42PM. "Yeah, sure, I can talk."you smile, laying back down onto your bedsheets. "When will you be back in town?" You ask him, smiling to yourself. "Soon." He laughs, understanding that the word 'soon' could mean tomorrow, or in 6 months time. "Sam!" You exclaim, and he huffs playfully. "What? I said soon." He guffaws. "When is soon?" You ask again, hoping for a serious answer this time. "Maybe... two weeks?" He even questions himself, "I'm not sure. I go back to college on Friday. Then my brother wants me to go on a roadtrip with him on Saturday." He sighs, you hear him rub his face, the facial hair coming into contact with his hand. "Okay. I guess I can wait." You joke, and he laughs. "You miss me already?" Sam practically smiles through the phone, and you do too.
"Yeah. I do."

Doctor Who vs Sun Wukong
In December of 2023, a fellow member of the now private Monkey King Facebook group posted a link to this fandom article mentioning a two-part comic book story called "Reign of the Stone Monkey." It appeared in issues no. 54 (6–12 March 2008) and no. 55 (13–19 March 2008) of Doctor Who Adventures magazine. As a once passionate Whovian, I dutifully tracked down copies of the publication just so I could read it. I have attached scans below. Here is a PDF of the comic for anyone who wants to share it externally.
I must point out that the magazines are quite large and challenged even my A3-sized flatbed scanner. Therefore, parts of the pages were chopped off in places. You'll twice notice a vertical white line while reading. This was the result of me not being careful enough and a little too much was cropped. The white line maintains the correct spacing.
Anyway, back to the comic. To be frank, it is terrible beyond words. I think the editorial decision went something like this:
Editor: [Watches the trailer for The Forbidden Kingdom movie on TV] Wow! Jackie Chan and Jet Li? We better jump on this Monkey King thing, too. Hey, writer ... Writer: Yeah, boss? Editor: ... your brother is married to an "Asian," right? Writer: I guess. She's Filipino. Editor: Close enough for me. I want you to whip up a script for a 10th Doctor versus the Monkey King comic book story. Writer: The monkey what? Editor: Just google "Monkey King." I want a script on my desk in ten minutes.
Beyond the bad story, the art direction is terrible as well. Instead of containing the action to the panels of a single page, it spills across to the other, making it difficult to read. The layout is so bad that translucent arrows are added to guide the reader's eye.

A3! Event Story Translation “Moon Traveler” - Chapter 6
Citron asks Chikage about his roots this time around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Citron
I am quite hungry from all this rehearsing.
Izumi
Omi-kun said he’s gonna make pasta for dinner tonight. There’s also Napolitan and some spicy arrabbiata.
Sakuya
Really!
Chikage
I’m looking forward to it.
Tsuzuru
I’m glad Fushimi-san cooks for us during rehearsals to cheer us on.
Izumi
It was kata yakisoba last time.
Guy
Nice work.
Izumi
Huh? Guy-san?
Guy
Daily delivery from Zahra.
Citron
Ohh, how early!
Sakuya
Woah, what a big box!
Guy
There’s another box, I’ll go get it.
Citron
It will be heavy. Chikage and I will go and take care of it.
Guy will hand out the contents of the box.
Guy
Understood.
Izumi
Oh, this is the candy I had before, it’s pretty tasty.
Sakuya
What about this one?
Guy
A health product. It can help massage your back.
Tsuzuru
T-this is great!
Tumblr media
Chikage
So it's heavy. What’s in it?
Citron
A special gift for Chikage.
Chikage
?
Tumblr media
Chikage
This box is just the same size as the other one.
Citron
I will hold it! Be careful not to feign your back!
Chikage
Sprain.
Chikage
Yeah, it’s pretty heavy… Are these books? I hope it’s spice.
Citron
It is a surprise!
Chikage
Books or spices… Maybe both.
Citron
How amazing Chikage.
Chikage
Maybe it’s the spice I’ve been wondering about.
Citron
Mix it with honey for throat care.
Chikage
That’s perfect for when I’m rehearsing. I’ll give it a try later.
This book is…
Citron
It is the novel adaptation of the movie that the play is based on.
Chikage
The Zahran version is pretty rare. I’ve never seen it before.
Citron
I had quite the difficult time finding it since it is an old book, but it is a gift to commemorate your lead role.
Chikage
Thanks. I hope my linguistic skills are good enough for me to read it.
Citron
《 ... The current Chikage shouldn’t have a problem with that.》
《Even when we first met, everyday conversation went swimmingly, but now you’re as close as one can get to a native speaker.》
Chikage
《What an honor to get the minister’s approval.》
Citron
《... Chikage, how and why do you speak so many languages?》
Chikage
《Will that be your question?》
Citron
《That’s right.》
《I’ve studied languages of many countries for diplomacy purposes since I was a child, but it’s difficult to master them completely.》
《Even if it’s a language used in other countries, it’s still a minor language that’s only widely used in the country of Zahra.》
《I assume you’re familiar with other languages as well?》
《If you don’t mind to tell me, I’d like to know if this ability of yours is a natural talent or it comes from your roots.》
Chikage
《...》
《You can say my upbringing was a big part of it.》
《My hometown was filled with people from all over the world.》
《We had a common language, but we all had different roots, and we all cherished those roots.》
《People with the same roots would speak their native tongue, so I naturally got used to hearing it, and they’d happily obliged if I asked them to teach me.》
《Of course it’s still difficult to master, but I think that’s the reason why I’m better at it compared to most people.》
Citron
《Wow, compared to all those languages, which ones did you find most interesting?》
Chikage
《Each country is interesting in its own way, but right now, the first thing I’m thinking of are the Nordic languages.》
《There are many words pronounced similarly to how you’d say it in Japanese, but they have completely different meanings.》
《As an example, “Kani” there means “Rabbit”*》
Citron
《”Kani” is rabbit? That’s interesting!》
《Then, how do you say “Dream” in that language?》
Chikage
《”Dream”, that is…》
Tumblr media
Citron
Thank you for answering my questions!
Chikage
I don’t think there’d be many situations to use what I told you.
Citron
——Chikage.
Chikage
?
Citron
《It was nice to know about your roots today. Let’s both cherish our roots and look after one another even when we’re far from our homeland.》
Chikage.
——.
Citron
Goodnight to you.
Chikage
… Night.
Tumblr media
Izumi
Good morning.
Chikage
Morning. Is that turmeric?
Izumi
I was just preparing today’s supper.
Chikage
You could use some of the spices I got from Citron the other day.
Izumi
I’d love to!
In our recent rehearsals, your performance as Roberto has been improving bit by bit. I’d say he’s gone more soft, or rather, more honest.
Fufu, must be the effect of Spring troupe’s Q&A.
Chikage
I guess so.
However, I think it’s better to be like “I got no idea what this guy is thinking” when it comes to that role.
Izumi
You got a point there…
The way that Roberto tries his best to understand those around him to work together to make the project a success,
I think it’ll be relatable for the audience.
Chikage
I see.
Izumi
That’s why, please continue with your “role-playing” as you are.
Chikage
Role-playing, right.
Izumi
Speaking of, have you decided on a name for the aliens?
Chikage
I’ve been thinking a lot about it, I just can’t seem to make my mind. I was thinking it’s time to ask everyone’s opinion on it.
Izumi
Fufu, it’s rare to see you so indecisive like this. I’m looking forward to what you come up with.
________T/Ns:________
"Kani" in Japanese means crab, but the language Chikage is referencing is Finnish, where "Kani" means rabbit.

How I bind my fics - Part 3
We ended part two with an assembled text block, which is perfectly functional as a book, but we're here for the hardbacks
Hardbacks start as greyboard for me, 3mm (1/8 inch), and we have to do a little maths to work out the size. We want a 3mm overhang around the top, bottom, and outside edge, which sounds simple (and it is for the top and bottom), but for the width we need to take a few mm away too, so the book can open flat. In this case, it ended up being 4mm narrower than the text block
We cut the cover and spine boards using our trusty L-ruler and knife, although sometimes I also score the line I want to cut and use the chisel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like to make Bradel bound books, so we need to make a "hinge" for the spine to connect to the cover - the video explains it better than I could, but essentially it's a piece of thickish paper (120gsm) that we glue the boards to
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then need to line the inside of the covers, again with 120gsm paper, leaving about an inch unglued closest to the spine
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These flaps are what the textblock's flaps will sit under later when we come to glue it up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's starting to look like a book!
We can now move on to designing the covers. One day I'll get a A3 printer and be able to do full spread covers, but for now I break it into three - the front, the back, and the spine.
These are again designed in inDesign, and in this case I've made a background and a foreground for the front and back. This is because the backgrounds will be inkjet printed, and the foreground will be laser printed over top
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(A higher res version of the cover background - I've tried to tally the fic to Erin's Diary, and hope I've shown Erin's personality a bit - there's a point when she stops labelling it a going to "Practice", and starts going to "James'"...)
Tumblr media
The spine is laser printed directly onto coloured 150gsm paper - slightly thicker, as this bit will be under the most stress of the cover
The reason we're laser printing over top is so we can use toner reactive foil - it'll stick to the laser print but not the inkjet one
It's simply a case of taping the foil sheets down tight over the areas we want to foil, masking areas we don't (although if you're doing two colours like we are, my experimentation says do them together), then feeding it through a hot laminator before peeling the foil sheet off
Tumblr media
(ignore the masking tape - its on areas we're cutting off in a minute)
Next we're cutting and gluing these pages onto the boards - the little boxes you can see jutting out from the edges are registration marks so I can pencil in on the revese where to line up the boards - we use the bone folder again to smooth them out, work out any air bubbles, and to push the paper into the nooks and crannies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we need to cut the corners, using my handy-dandy 3D printed template
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We cut them so that when we fold it over we get a nice crisp fold
On that note, we need to glue the edges and fold them over, making sure to get the glue right into the edge of the board
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We're very nearly there now - just need to wed the textblock to the casing
We start by dry fitting the block in the case, then carefully opening one cover and gluing the tabs down, followed by the other, again smoothing with the bone folder
Tumblr media
Finally, we need to carefully glue down the endpapers to the board (no matter how careful or which order you do them in, the front paper always gets a little messy for some reason)
Tumblr media
Et voilà! We have a book - it'll live in the press overnight while the glue dries, but once it's ready it'll take it's place between "In Their Thirties" (which I'm tempted to rebind now I have foil for the cover), and "Vacation James"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
tumblr
I'm sure there are seasoned bookbinders reading this going "No, you fool!", but I'm happy with the outcome. It's fun, and I love being able to have something in my hands at the end of it; I may not be able to draw fanart, but I can make something to show my love for my favourite creators!
Thanks again to @areseebee and @derrygirlstrash/@carouselunique for writing this really fun fic, and to @imstressedx for planting the notion in my head to do a step-by-step
Now, on to the next fic!

TSB Round 6 Masterpost
Tumblr media
My masterpost for this round of @tonystarkbingo! I managed to scrape a blackout, which I'm very happy about! Fills under the cut.
S1 - Piano Starks | Gen | Iron Family | moodboard
This is where you imagine Morgan growing up around that piano, sitting under it with her toys while her parents play simple duets (Tony always asking Pepper, "Top or bottom?" while he waggles his eyebrows, just to see her roll her eyes and smile), sitting on Tony's lap and plinking at the keys with her little bitty fingers, taking lessons when she's old enough, performing at recitals and making all the adults in her life so proud, especially her dad.
S2 - Tony Birthday Cutie | Gen | no pairing | pixel art
Cross stitch cutie Tony Stark celebrating his birthday!
S3 - They don't make views better than this. | Gen | Iron Family | moodboard & drabble
Tony snaps a pic of his future.

Autumn-flavored Pepperony moodboard
S5 - Blood in the Water | Teen | Bucky & Tony | fanfic
Bucky has a recurring nightmare again, but this time Tony Stark turns up afterwards with sympathy and a gesture of friendship.
T1 - Post-Snap Anniversary | Gen | Pepperony, Tony & Rhodey | fanfic
On the anniversary of one of the worst days of Tony's life (and he's had a lot of worst days to compare it to), Pepper recognizes the signs and calls in reinforcements. Rhodey isn't about to let Tony spiral into his own self-destruction like he has so many times before.

Adopted Prompt: Pepper Potts - Autumn in New England | Gen | Pepperony | fanfic
Tony creates a fairytale autumn paradise for Pepper, who finds something she's been waiting for.
Adopted Prompt: Outsider POV - Inside Jokes | Gen | Tony & Avengers & Bucky | fanfic
Ah, inside jokes. The epitome of hilarity and often utterly nonsensical to the outside eye. What better way to make someone feel included than to bring them in on their very own inside joke?

Etching process pt.1: sketching
hiii!!!! so!! as i’ve said i’m beginning a big etching project right now and i thought it would be cool to show a little bit of how i approach it simply because i love sharing my stuff online but in this instance i can’t anywhere else because it’s a secret gift for a friend!!!!! and also because as we’ve established with the etching fic i am a nerd about it lol
so!!! a bit of the process under the cut!!!! including lots of pics and lots of rambling
okay so first things first. a decade old friend moved to a different country a couple of months ago, and right before he did we traveled together to say goodbye. i obviously miss him very much, so i wanted to gift him something nice. at first i was going to draw him some landscapes and that was it, but this week i thought wait a minute.. what if... i made an etching COMIC!!
and i thought this because when you print something you made in copper it leaves a very distinct volume on the paper that i though would look great as a comic panel, check it out:
Tumblr media
but the problem is. copper is extremely expensive. and since im making a comic i’ll be cutting it in extremely specific sizes that are very, very prone to leave a bunch of waste behind. i usually sketch something on my sketchbook before i draw on the copper and call it a day, but this time specifically i wanted
to be extra sure of what i was doing
heavily trace pictures of the trip
have a cool digital illustration just in case something goes wrong with the etching
so i ended up playing around with the pics me and my friends took and ended up with a 6 panels A3 layout that looks like this:
Tumblr media
(back reveal omg hi!!!!!)
as you can see some pics were just fine by themselves, but i meshed some things up to look better, and the first panel looked weird no matter what i did, so i took a pic in my room this week and photoshoped it on top of something else to represent the one hundred hours we spent snorkeling - which obviously i have no pics of lol - it worked just fine i think!!!!
but anyway. since we’ve established that i also wanted a digital illustration in this specific instance, i set the brush to a very, very small size (2px) and just... hatched the hell out of the pics. usually when i do my sketches digitally i print multiple copies throughout the process so i don’t waste time drawing things that won’t show up, but this time i just wanted to have some fun!!! not only would i have a cool drawing by the end but it’s always nice to like. test out how to draw something before you actually spend a lot of money to draw in on copper hgdkjhgfd the end result looks like this:
Tumblr media
and the printed version looks like this, with my hand for scale:
Tumblr media
while everything looks fine on the screen, the second and third panel have waaaay too much detail for them to really work on print, so im doing a simpler redraw some time later so they fit better with everything else. but for now that’s it!!! im taking the printed version with me to my uni next monday and i’ll begin the actual etching, and when i have one of them ready i’ll come back with part two and show how you both etch and print an individual panel!! i’ve never printed multiple plates at once, so obviously there will be a lot of testing around about that specifically lol. wish me luck!!! you’ll hear more from me soon ;)

Week 2 - ඞ
Engineering drawings were the focus of this week's tasks, I found they were equally enjoyable as the last. Having learned from my mistakes last week of lacking certain geometry tools, I found a lot greater success in making accurate projections across my page with them now on hand.
I chose to use a wooden puzzle as my object to draw, and created the box for it during classtime:
Tumblr media
While creating the net for my cube, I realised that I'd chosen an object that was very similar on all sides, and was easily drawn due to being comprised of a voxel-like grid of 6x6 wooden blocks per piece.
Tumblr media
The net worked out very nicely, and I could clearly see what I needed to draw within my engineering drawing using this. I also felt the need to change my object up a bit so I'd actually be drawing something different each time, so I removed two of the pieces to create a more interesting form which I then begun to draw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided on a 2:1 scale for my object as otherwise it would be far too small to be appropriate on an A3 size page, and it fit perfectly within my external border. I also elected not to show a left side view, as it would be the same as the right side but inverted - not showing any new information, as the object was symmetrical across that plane.
Tumblr media
Retracing with a ruler and pen, and adding measurements. All the measurements were 8.25 mm, as the object could be easily analysed in a 6 by 6 pixel-like grid from side views.
Tumblr media
Accounting for feedback from last week, I have also scanned my images to get a clearer view of my whole image and improve the quality. I'm not terribly pleased with how it has come out though, as a lot of the useful pencil markings that show how parts of the object line up show up, and also I feel my handwriting of the TOP, FRONT and RIGHT text could have been improved.
Overall I feel like I understand engineering drawings better due to this exercise, and I'm pleased with my final result. I feel it looks significantly better in person, so if anybody has tips to better capture all the elements with just a phone camera I would appreciate some advice.

Movement Project Week 4 - Suffering from Ceramics
I guess I'm just lying in these titles now cause I actually really enjoyed the ceramics workshop on Monday. I was a complete Zombie from not sleeping the night before, so maybe that was the root cause of the suffering. I choose to agree with the Buddha though that desire is the root of all suffering and there was nothing I more desired on Monday morning than to be not in school. Hence the title.
That actually got me thinking though, about desire and suffering. came in to the Elaine/Gemma/Mary's ceramics workshop on Monday with an obvious desire; to recreate my spiral staircase in clay and be done with it. This rockheaded approach is obviously not conducive with the creative process which our great school endeavours to instill in it's student body.
When I let go of that desire and simply engaged with the workshop as intended, I not only enjoyed the process of it a lot more, but found I landed on better ideas than those I was holding onto so steadfast. This is essentially a longwinded way of saying that when the ceramics workshop opened with us painting sheets of paper with ink, I was internally combusting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: Ceramics?
This was pretty fun. We were asked to write out a list of words, verbs specifically, that had something to do with movement or our conception of it. And then we had to express that through the unforgiving canvas of black ink on white paper. I've uploaded it already for a previous post, but here's another look at the list I put together:
Tumblr media
Above: Obviously leaving room in case I hadn't written enough...
So for those playing along at home your task is to look at the set of veritable rorschach test of inkblots above and connect them to their verb of origin...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The answer is number 1. "fall" for all of them... I don't know why I wrote so many tbh. You might also note that in all the infinite vastness of my personal dictionary the word "spiral" doesn't appear once. I still hadn't connected the dots on that one... I am very smrt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: The process
I was pretty conservative with this whole process, maybe due to the aforementioned sleep deprivation. I did three A2 sheets, which felt like a lot til I saw how many everyone else did. Even in terms of the tools used to make marks in ink, I was below par. I used a foam brush with a triangular tip, a roll of material that felt like what straw hats are made of out but probably wasn't that, cardboard, and gravity.
Honestly I could've been a lot more adventurous here and some of the class made some incredible impressionistic work. I think I prefer the "experiment with the resources you have" stage, to the "gather resources" stage if that makes sense. I feel a lot more able to get creative once the limitations have been set, which sounds pretty contradictory now that I write it out... onto the next step.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: Very interesting shapes according to me
The next step was choosing one of our inked up pages and photocopying it at different sizes and with inverted colours to get us thinking purely in terms of shape. We made viewfinder to locate the most interesting parts of the image and gave particular attention them. Evidently I choose the swooshy curve from my second sheet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: (:
At first we were told to cut up, rearrange, and mess around with all our photocopied material to come up with an interesting collage of shapes. I hate collages. I hate scrap booking. I hated this. sadface.
Then it all turned around when we told to start thinking in 3D and combining our shapes into structures. This was a huge relief for me. Making weird shapes out of paper is a lot more fun and creatively motivating than making collages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: Return of the spiral staircase
My first structure was pretty simple. I had told Elaine about my staircase idea and she suggested trying it out in paper. The centre column is just an A3 sheet rolled into in a cylinder and the steps are short strips of card taped onto the side. Not exactly the most elegant contraption.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above: Spiral something or other
After talking with Mary about the project, I finally had my eureka moment of realising "spiral" is a also a movement verb. Very intellectual stuff. She suggested pushing the spiral idea into forms other than a staircase, so I got two cutouts of my swoopy yoke and connected them end-to-end after wrapping them into cylinders.
The shape lent itself to having a kind of dolphin tail or cresting wave look to it. It made the start and end points seem ambiguous, a static object that had a dynamic motion to it, the exact thing I had been searching for with the staircase. I had to compromise a bit and add a strip of card for support but this was still the work I was most happy with from the workshop.
Tumblr is informing me I'm out of images for this post so I'll finish this off in another.

Making adjustments to a new box to allow room for prints on A3 sized canvas. The plan is to have 5 different canvases each using imagery that has been a synonymous part of the development work of this module. I’ll be doing more cyanotypes and test pieces on canvas before starting the finals, I also intend to have my postcards connected and hanging from one of the canvases, to allow the audience to engage more with the work and know me better as an artist.

Posters Process
Test Prints
At first I thought that A3 is a good size for posters, so I’ve designed my posters in A3. I’ve tried different ideas of how the posters could contain all of the elements and I’ve tried different fonts. By the end I’ve decided to use Avenir, because the elements are very abstract by themselves, so the type should be sans Serif otherwise the elements won’t be the main part of the posters.Anyways by the end I had a tutorial and I’ve decided that each Opera will have its own 20 minutes performance cause I wanted each of the elements to have its own poster and I was advised that if all of the elements have their own poster than it doesn’t make sense for them to advertise one 25 min performance, it would be better if each of the elements has its own performance so the posters are cohesive.

Building my structure
With the help of my peers and lectures I was able to come up with a better design for my structure, so this way it also better ties in with my hats, the structure of a hole gives you a nice look into the landfill as if your looking in it from an outside perspective. I think this will work better than the TV as the TV didn’t really add anything to my ideas, it was a form of technology but that’s it. However if I use this landfill hole approach, I can make it immersive and feel like you are really viewing the insight of a landfill
Tumblr media
Looking at my motion graphics through into a hole will give it a sense of depth and make them appear more 3D, I will also be able to texture the structure to follow the crumpled shape and jaggedness that you might see in a landfill, this will create texture to add to on top on the motion graphics that you wouldn’t get from watching the motion graphics on their own So to start create my structure I want to keep in mind the actual size that I want to project on to, the bigger the better as I will be able to view more information and detail from a bigger structure, we have A2 card in the studio so this can be my base that will hold the structure in place, I can then have the hole cave down in to the middle of the structure. For the actual building of the hole I will use paper and glue, I can crumple the paper to get the desired texture that I need and then apply some PVA glue across the whole structure that will help keep the shape. I started with 4 bits of A3 paper and crumpled them up to create my desired texture, then I used masking tape to connect them together to make a big enough shape for the hole. I also started with the PVA glue to connect the pieces on the other side. I’m using masking tape on the side that won’t be visible just as an extra from of support
Tumblr media
Next I started to fold the corners of the paper in on itself to create the circular shape, I used masking tape to solidify it on the outside. As you can see there are visible lines where the seams of the connected paper cross, I can fix this later by glue more paper on top of that, which will also create a more varied texture
Tumblr media
This is roughly what It was starting to look like on the outside, all the masking tape helps keep it from moving and since it’s on the outside it won’t be visible when projection so it doesn’t matter what it looks like.
Tumblr media
Then I cut out a circular shape from the A2 card that would be big enough to fit the crater in and then started to fold the paper around the edges, I used masking tape again to connect the hole to card and some more double sided tape just to hold in place. Then I kept adding PVA glue to different parts of the structure to add more volume and solidify the texture around the rim of the hole, this also ended up giving it a nice shiny texture in some areas of the paper
Tumblr media
And finally this is what it ended up looking like when it was projected on to, giving a nice texture effect to my motion graphics which were otherwise very smooth

What should you look out for when buying a BJJ suit?
BJJ emphasizes the importance of technique, skill, and strategy over physical strength and size. Techniques include but are not limited to lock, choke, and control techniques aimed at bringing the opponent down and preventing them from moving or defending themselves.
BJJ is typically practiced in a gi (a suit that includes a jacket and pants), allowing the wearer better grip and control over the opponent. It is also used in many mixed martial arts (MMA) fights, allowing the fighter to take the fight to the ground and gain an advantage.
In addition to being an effective martial art, BJJ is an excellent form of physical fitness and a way to develop confidence, discipline, and respect. It is also a competitive sport that operates internationally, with tournaments such as the World Championships of Jiu-Jitsu held every year.
How to choose kimonos?
The difference in the various jiu jitsu gi kimonos lies in the details, more precisely in the weave types and fabric types. The higher the GSM, the heavier and more robust the Gi suit.
There are the following types of weave:
Single Weave: jiu jitsu gi for women is a woven fabric. The advantage is that it is relatively light and thin, which is particularly advantageous in warm temperatures.
Pearl Weave: Pearl Weave is the most commonly used fabric for BJJ Gis today. The Pearl Weave Gi is the lightest BJJ Gi approved for competition, but it is also very robust and durable. The Pearl Weave fabric can be recognized by its tight weave, making the fabric like small beads or bumps appear.
Rip-Stop: This fabric has grown in popularity and is typically used for Gi pants. Originally only a weave for pants, a jacket variant made of ripstop was recently developed. The square grid pattern can recognize the ripstop fabric.
Buy a Jiu-Jitsu belt.
The belt symbolizes the respective "level of experience" of the BJJ athlete. For adults, there are 5 different colored BJJ belts. Beginners wear the white belt, followed by blue, violet, Brown, and the highest level, black.
The intermediate levels are rewarded with a white belt stripe with 4 white stripes. One is then ready for the next belt color. The exception is the black belt. Here, one can achieve up to 6 white stripes before receiving the black and red bjj belts.
What should you look out for when buying a BJJ suit?
It would help if you considered whether you would participate in competitions. If so, make sure that the BJJ Gi suit is IBJJF compliant and approved, otherwise, you may not be allowed to take part in specific competitions.
Be sure to pay attention to the size chart of the respective manufacturer. The sizes for men are often given in A sizes, starting with A1 as the smallest size, through A2 and A3 to A4. There are often short and long sizes for bjj gi where the sleeves and legs are correspondingly longer or shorter.
Last but not least, it should be mentioned that bjj gi kimonos shrink a little the first time they are washed. The shrinkage rate is +- 5%, please consider this when placing your order.
