I’m currently in the midst of binding the full series of The Mirror of Ecidyrue, and my brain thought I should do a small fanbind for further practice. This is Heal Thyself by astolat, which is something of a comfort fic for me. I’m happy to have a physical copy, even though it isn’t my best work!

The latest bind - The Harvest of Uruk by Aethelflaed It is getting sent to the author. I love the process of binding but don't necessarily need to keep the end product. So I love binding them for the author and sending them out into the world. Every bind I have been adding a new skill and this one was creating chapter headings and more decorative texts. The photos don't pick up on it but I love how the gold foil leaves a texture on the cover, slightly indented so when you run your fingers over it you can feel the words.

A Wolf‘s heart by mizdiz
AO3
This one broke me while reading.
It broke me again while binding.
Started crying during the edit of the typeset. Be warned if you haven’t read it, the MCD hits hard.
I had to redo everything.
So printing, sewing, glueing and cutting. Did cut to much aaaaaand I started printing again.
The HTV burned and did not stick at the same time. So I did the whole cover again and ordered new and different HTV ( probably way to pricey, but it kinda worked).

Away Childish Things by @letteredlettered
I'm so excited to finally share this bind of one of my all time favorite fics! Thanks to lettered's generous binding policy, I decided to go all out.
This bind has a foiled cover and spine, hand sewn silk endbands, and thirteen custom chapter headers. It was also my first time rounding and backing.
You can find more pictures and information about my process under the cut.
For the cover and spine, I recreated the design of Beasts of the Field (1902) by William J. Long.
Tumblr media
I wanted something that captured both the whimsy and maturity of the story, and this cover fit my vision perfectly. It also gave me the opportunity to recreate another antique cover from the public domain.
Unfortunately, the design was a bit complicated for my Cameo 4, so I was unable to fill the lines in. You can also tell that the foil did not adhere properly near the bottom, so the flowers are lighter than I would like them to be.
Tumblr media
Because of the trouble I was having with my Cameo, I decided to foil the spine by hand. I deeply regretted this decision two hours later, and it took me four hours to finish foiling. My wrist still hurts!
Tumblr media
Sewing the headbands was my absolute favorite part. I was encouraged to try them by a lovely binder on Instagram, and I ended up completely addicted. I splurged on some fancy silk thread so I could give this fic the royal treatment it deserves! I think they look like beautiful little caterpillars.
As for the rounding and backing... I'm not going to talk about it. Nightmare. Lots of nervous sweating. Emotional agony. Next topic!
Tumblr media
I worked on the typeset back at the beginning of January when I had some time off, and it took me a solid week of obsessive editing to complete. My sister suggested that I use Harry and Draco's patronuses for the chapter art, but there unfortunately aren't many public domain illustrations of deer and foxes playing together.
It was at that point that I also decided that I wanted the animals to match the respective ages of Harry and Draco and the tone of each chapter. For the 13 chapters I ended up editing 25 different illustrations together. The bulk of these are taken from vintage versions of Bambi and Reynard the Fox. It's possible that a few stock images from 1980s nature books snuck in there, but I did my best to keep them all pre 1925.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not a skilled editor, and some of these are worse than others, but I'm quite proud of what I was able to cobble together. On the final page I put a young fox and deer running off together. I wanted it to seem like Harry and Draco's inner children had been freed.
I'm a bit embarrassed to say that this bind took me about 4-5 months to complete! I started in early January, and went wildly off track learning how to round, back, and sew headbands. And then I was hit by some killer creative block that only lifted last week!
There are still many things I could improve on, but I'm so proud of everything that I learned and accomplished with this bind! A big thank you to lettered for inspiring me with such a wonderful story. <3

This bind is finished and I'm so happy🩶
There's always room for improvement and testing new things in bookbinding. This material for the covers is not my favourite, as every little dust particle (and glue spot) seems to be visible on the surface. Did some black foiling for the first time and it's so pretty (the pics don't do justice). Would be nice to add some artwork as page overlays?🤔
Typeset is by me🖤
Anyway, this is Twenty Four Hours by the amazingly talented @ghost-proofbaby (thank you for letting me bind this masterpiece):

Please, excuse the horrible photos (Will take better once later) and my weird fingers.

Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach, a Good Omens fanfic by @mouseonamoose
After surviving the events of the apocalypse, Anthony J. Crowley goes to therapy. This fic is a well-researched and rich depiction of trauma therapy from the perspective of the mental health provider.
Bound in premium cotton from Worldcloth decorated with silver hot stamp foil and a hand painted foreedge. Frontispiece artwork generously provided by @rjrjrjrjrjrjrjrj. To enhance the reading experience, the typeset of this book was further annotated with additional commentary on the psychotherapeutic process (see footnote example.)
This book was bound and gifted to a fellow clinician in a different medical field as part of the @renegadeguild Mini Exchange, 2024.

Hey - not sure if you're aware but someone is trying to sell a binding of your fic on Etsy for profit - won't let me add the link in the questions but the user is called NovaBindery
Hi, thanks for letting me know, I’m aware there are several sellers on etsy and on instagram, tiktok, their own janky sites, etc. It’s a truly pervasive problem in our community right now.
And I’m tired of it. I’ve been urging people to keep fandom free for a while now, but it honestly feels like screaming at the sea. In the past few days alone, several dramione authors have pulled their works from ao3 and at least one has left the community altogether.
I’m not going anywhere, nor are my fics, but this abhorrent behavior is extremely disheartening. I started participating in fandom and sharing my writing because it was a fun hobby. So while I won’t be pulling my works, I can say that those who are out here commodifying my stories have made me simply want to participate less. It’s no longer fun if my extremely limited free time is spent reporting shops or fielding questions about commissions. I have lots of stories I’d love to still share, but it’s taking too much of my energy to deal with all this and then I find I no longer feel as inspired to write and share fics. When my stress relieving activity starts to become the source of stress, it’s time to pull back.
If you are a reader and you do come across these shops, please report them. Unfortunately, I have no other recourse that wouldn’t involve me revealing personal/private information and again, the entire reason I participate in fandom is to have a fun, silly time writing about two idiots kissing and to read others’ stories about the same two idiots kissing.
I sincerely appreciate all the lovely people who are trying to keep this space as free of monetization as possible. Thank you ❤

i hope Onyx & Elm pulling all their fic is the slap in the face reminder that some of you need to NOT PROFIT OFF FANFIC. fanfic is 100% a labor of love and something that’s done purely as a passion project. authors put free content out there and get NO money or reward from it. so to see people take that and profit off of it is…disheartening to say the least. as someone who has bound fics myself before (while being mindful of authors’ personal rules for their fic) i can tell you guys that it’s so fucking easy to just NOT sell it. its not hard to be a respectful and decent person.

Hi hello 👋🏻
I’ve finally completed my wrap covered set of All The Young Dudes 🙊
I actually need to make another set for my trade bc I’m not too happy about a few of the measurements and how this glossy paper worked for the wrap method (it was impossible to crease and scratched easily), but I adore the design. I went for a vinyl sleeve theme and hopefully it actually looks like that (does it does it??) 😂
THANK YOU a million times to @green-lights-33 for allowing me to use your stunning artwork for these covers. I’m absolutely floored by your talent.

Another bind completed!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started this one during Binderary but just didn't have time to case it in until now!
But I love how it turned out! It was my first time using heat transfer vinyl (HTV) but I am a huge fan of how it looks! I had way too much fun picking out different fonts for the titles to match each story. Also I bought little lightning bolt charms in a bunch of colors to add to the bookmark ribbons! I will be adding them to basically all of my Shazam books now, they're just so cute!
This is a collection of short stories I've written over the past couple of years that center around Billy Batson and Captain Marvel (which is most of them) You can see them listed in the Table of Contents page but I'll link them under the cut for anyone interested.
Stories included in this collection:
Where It All Began
Our Hero
Sticky Fingers
What Are Friends For
Learning to be Heroes
The House on Willow Creek Lane
Coming Out is Hard
A Birthday is Just Another Day
One Half of a Golden Locket
A Perfect Day
Lost Time
In the Aftermath
Truce
Metamorphosis

Windows by @drgrlfriend

368 pages / 83,266 words

Body Fonts: Cardo, Geo
HAPPY FFWAD!!! Thank you @renegadepublishing for putting on this event in celebration!
More on the process below the cut!
I'm so excited to be posting this book! Super grateful @drgrlfriend was so down to let me bind Windows for Fan Fiction Writer Appreciation Day. This is one of my all-time favs, and I was thrilled to give it the treatment it deserves! @maichan808 & @andavs-main were also incredibly kind to allow me to include their stunning art pieces in the book <3 And thank you @renegadepublishing for putting this event together!
I wanted the typeset to be visually interesting and move around the page, without making it difficult to read. I created unique headers for each of the 28 chapters with royalty free art, and varied placement on the page in six different configurations. I also played with the text warp to make the text work as part of the image - one of my favorites is chapter 26, "Banshee", pictured above!
I used Brick duo for this bind, as part of the vision for the front cover, which was done in silver permanent vinyl. I think the rich rust color is perfect for how I would imagine Stiles & Derek's apartment building, and the silver is incredibly reflective - my favorite part is how the vinyl catches the light on the spine, and can reflect "Windows" on whatever surface it's on (pictured above). That's not an added effect, it's just doing that!
I did @tankbredgrunt's faux double-core headband with some Sulky Gutermann I bought at a secondhand store for $0.25, and it's so pretty! A bit thin to work with, but totally worth it for the multi-color effect it gives off.
And I finally got a proper crisp hinge! I think it really brings the whole book together, thank you knitting needles (even though you were a pain in the ass).
This project also marks my 100th book! I'm rapidly approaching the two year mark of my fanbinding career with no sign of stopping; thank you to this entire community, and all of the fandoms I've been able to bring this hobby to. I love how cross-fandom it is; and for an old floater like me, it's wonderful to bring all of my interests together and have something that transcends those lines.
HAPPY FAN FICTION WRITER APPRECIATION DAY!

The Bolthole by aideomai, Tepre, and GallaPlacidia
I'm absolutely thrilled to finally share my first fic bind here on Tumblr! I completed this bind back in November, and it introduced me to so many wonderful people.
You can find pictures and detailed explanations of my process under the cut.
This is "The Bolthole" by Aideomai, Tepre, and (formerly) GallaPlacidia on Ao3. The cover design is adapted from "The Little Brother" (1902) by Josiah Flynt. The typeset is my own.
Tumblr media
I fell in love with this cover the moment I saw it, and wanted to try to recreate it with book cloth. As a hobbyist book binder, I like to try to revitalize older designs from the public domain. There are so few copies of this book left in the world, so I thought it would be fun to give it new life as the cover of a contemporary story.
The cover is made out of three different colors of book cloth from the Allure and Verona lines. The book cloth and endpapers were bought from Hollander's.
I used my Cameo 4 and a strong tack mat to cut the design out of each color of book cloth. I then assembled the pattern like a puzzle. It was MUCH harder than it sounds! Some of the pieces were incredibly thin and fragile, and they were difficult to keep track of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the foiling, I used my Cameo 4 and the We R Memory Keepers fine tip foil quill for everything but the spine, which I did by hand. I foiled immediately after I cut, without removing my mat from the machine. This helped me line everything up. It did not, however, prevent me from sweating bullets as my machine worked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This method was, frankly, torture, but I'm really glad that I tried it. Now that I've had a nice long break, I'd like to try it again soon. I love running my hands over this book, and the texture of the book cloth feels wonderful under my fingertips. I do, however, have a few words of caution. Do not try this out unless you have book cloth to burn! Here are some pictures of just a few of my failures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Cameo 4 is not your friend. Your cut-outs can and will get fucked up for no reason. If the mat isn't sticky enough, or the blade isn't sharp enough, or the fabric doesn't adhere properly, your design could get completely shredded. I strongly recommend that you avoid Verona book cloth, or anything with a paper backing and loose fibers. It was absolute hell to work with. When it wasn't shredded by the machine, it was fraying like crazy. Acrylic coated cloth is the way to go if you want clean lines. And, you know, your sanity intact.
This was my most challenging bind to date, but I learned a lot! Aside from experimenting with book cloth, automated foiling, and my Cameo 4, it was also my first time formatting, printing, and sewing a text block. I'm incredibly grateful for all of the online tutorials and wonderful people who helped me make this bind a reality!
