Fanbinding: Hibernating with Ghosts by @fayet
Tumblr media
Getting stuck in Kaedwen in winter had never been on Jaskier's plan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hyped to share photos of the set I made at the end of 2023 for the @renegadepublishing annual exchange! In addition to "Hibernating With Ghosts" these volumes include 30 pencil illustrations by @saeculorum-art, the fic's prequel Silent friend of many distances, and a song (The Siren Song) by @stillmadaboutpetra. I was over the moon that they all agreed to allow their work included so i could make this for the lovely Kitty / @perfectlynormalbooks (thank you for the intro to the wonderful fic!!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This book was bound in Duo dragonfly cloth, with marbled lokta and hand-foiled cover accents. All art not by saeculorum is sourced from public domain woodcuts. I went a little harder than usual on the typeset, but it was a lot of fun and I finally had a good reason to use a vertical header (the chapter titles are SO LONG) and colored dropcaps (i was printing color for the art, anyway!). I justified my embroidery thread spending with a fun five-color color endband, and I colored the top edge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a lot of fun making this and trying our a few different ways of doing things! Thanks again to everyone for a wonderful Renegade Exchange!

Not perfct!
Tumblr media
This is the copy I bound of A Big Black Sky by @alexmeg. This fic is one of my favourites, I always come back to it. Having it on my shelf makes me so happy.
Alex Meg has a transformative policy in their profile, indicating that it's OK to bind their fics for personal use. I love it when authors make that statement!
As you can see, my binding is not perfct at all. Everything was going well until the HTV decided to go on strike. Ha, ha, ha, ha.
What I like: I've been experimenting for a while with placing a monogram with the ship of each fic. Previously, I had placed it on the spine, but I didn't like it. This time I put it on the back cover and I really liked it.
What I learned:
I am happy because the spine is well aligned, and the endpapers are well positioned. Finally!
What could be improved?
Apart from the problem with the title? I guillotined the text block and forgot to adjust the size of the cover, so the distance between the text block edges and the edge of the cover is too wide.
Supplies:
I made the binding fabric by papering 100% cotton. I bought this design with this fic in mind.
I used 80 grams bone colour bond paper. 2 mm gray cardboard for the cover, 1.5 mm for the spine.

I'm so pleased with how this turned out! I definitely need to make myself a press and I'd love the equipment to actually be able to make shoulders for big fics like this. Fic is Leave No Soul Behind by whochick (it's posted on ao3 and I highly highly recommend it to anyone who's willing to commit to 260k worth of fic!). I love this fic so much and found myself in desperate need of a physical copy so here we are! I'll list some of the things I noticed that could've been a little cleaner but overall, I'm really happy with it. Gonna be hanging out with this book for the next few days!
Imperfect tidbits: The circuit struggled a smidge with cutting the bookcloth cleanly and I got a titch too much glue around the letters so it oozed out onto the holo sticker which has created a mild bit of smudging in the title so it isn't as shiny as it could be. I also didn't have any sort of neutral cord to do the headband with so you can see the blue edges 😆

🌹Rose Serpent Press Yearly Overview 2023 🌹
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Better late then never am I right? Stats below the read more!
🐍Total:
6 books bound, all unique, and single fic books rather then duplicates or anthologies. Of these, 4 were fanfiction.
Of these, 4 were A6 and 2 were A5.
A total of 213599 words uniquely typeset.
The word count this year was a little less then the year before, and about half of the number of books bounds then last year. This result is likely as this year many of my typesets focused on single-fic books rather than anthologies, series of anthologies, ot duplicates which composed of a good number of the ones I had bound last year. I had also been quite busy this year unfortunately, and didn't have as much time as I wanted to put work into bookbinding. I had also gotten a lot more pickier for how I like to do my typesetting, and as a result it took me much longer to do a typeset then previously. Which reminds me I have some nearly finished typesets I just need to touch one or two things up on... ooops. This also seems to be a A6 enthusiast year as I seem to have focused mainly on those, rather then the previous A5 books.
Total of books bound over the two years now: 19 books, 2 published literature, 1 journal, and 16 fanfiction. For fanfiction, 50 unique fics have been printed, spanning across 6 fandoms. Four new fanfics were added this year to the list, and three new fandoms; Hannibal, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Trigun.
🐍Fandoms and Ships:
Trigun: Vash the Stampede x Nicholas - 1 book, 1 fic
Jujutsu Kaiden: Gojo Satoru x Getou Suguru - 1 book, 1 fic
Gintama: Sakata Ginroki x Toushirou Hijikata - 1 book, 1 fic
Hannibal: Hannibal Lecter x Will Graham - 1 book, 1 fic
Published literature/other: 1 book, and 1 journal
🐍Breakdown by title:
Nachfolge (A5) - 82150 words
Lilac (A6) - 16820 words
Journal (A5) - no words, 60 sheets
Wolf and I (A6) - 46115 words
White pony (A6) - 10049 words
Carry Me Home (A5) - 58465 words

I saw a reblog of the post about fanbinding and you mentioned a group called Renegade and I was wondering what the group is for? Is it to learn how to fanbind and give binders a place to hang out together and share their works? I was planning to get into the hobby myself but the nonsense of people selling works is sad to hear
basically, yes!
we have a discord server we all hang out in, and talk about the books we're working on, and ask each other for opinions and advice
it's very friendly and nice and I love it there
if you get stuck at literally any point in the bookbinding process there will be someone who can help you figure out what to do next
and it's all very gift economy. There are a couple people who will occasionally talk about being commissioned to do bookbinding projects, but those projects are not of fanfic, they're in the regular professional bookbinder realm. or like. blank journals.
Renegade's tumblr blog is @renegadeguild, and I believe the link to the discord is in the linktree in the blog description. or maybe the pinned post.

Salvage by MuffinLance
I completed this baby back in October early November it was painfully fun, lol. Shoutout to @no-name-publishing for sharing their typeset with me!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below the line, there is more information and photos on this bind!
The foiling took about 8-9 hours or so. There was a lot of trial and error, and I ruined about 3 books worth of bookcloth. I ran through all my heat reactive silver foil (neverforget✊️)before I was able to compelte it. I used foil I got from a bindery that is closing down, I used my new cameo, and the memory keepers heat foil quills.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was originally going to use The Great Wave off Kanagawa as my cover art, but my friends talked me out of it, and I'm glad since, had I not listened, it may have taken longer. The sound of the cameo working will haunt my nightmares. My spouse was dreading their life choices. "Why did I buy her the machine from hell?" Cause you love me, my sweet honeybooboo, that's why.
I used 28lb paper for this puppy, my printer was such a good boy and printed it out without a single issue (bless you babe I will thank you first when I get a trophy one of these days) but after I folded it it was like 3 inches wide and I got so scared for my life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used remie band and linen thread (only the best for you, my precious), I made headbands with the bookcloth and l2mm leather core, and I used glue and kozo paper to strengthen the rounded spine.
Rounding and backing almost made me cry, but I had DAS there with me. Also, shoutout to my friend's cousin for the backing and routing boards and Jim with ABE for the wonderful laying press.
Tumblr media
The endpapers are from De Milo Design. They are handmade, and I got them at a local faire. They are beautiful!
Tumblr media
The bookcloth is from BookcraftSupplyCo in CA!

ficbinding: Joy in the Midst of These Things by glitterbombshell
This is the fic I bound for this winter's @renegadepublishing exchange! I was excited to see this series among my giftee's requests because it's one I really enjoyed.
I recently (... okay, that was in the summer and it's already December, but. Recently) did a different stab binding box set and I liked it a lot and wanted to do it again, and thought it would work well for this series. This time instead of a slipcase, I made a wraparound case modeled after a Chinese style.
When I ordered this decorative paper, I thought it was just going to be light blue, but it turned out to also have streaks of red, and I thought that made it even more fitting for a story about Wei Wuxian finding his place at the Cloud Recesses.

The Sorcerer & The King by winterhill
Canon AU -- Merlin's death is only the beginning; with no-one to protect the kingdom, Camelot falls to an enemy sorcerer and Arthur is forced to serve in the court that he once ruled. When an escape attempt goes horribly wrong, Arthur is rescued by someone he never expected to see again -- and it's their destiny to put things right.
fic by winterhill
art by lukita
404 pages / 85,529 words
Title Font: Neoteric, Ever, Celticmd
Body Fonts: Pilgrim, Far From Homecoming, YOZAKURA, Aliya Ramsey
More on the process below the cut!
Ah, this wonderful fic! This was a fic I hadn't read before @runawaymarbles put it on my radar, and it was utterly wonderful! Proof still that the well of fic is deep and vast, and there will always be another beautiful story waiting for you.
I had a lot of fun binding this one; aiming for a tome kind of vibe, with a full Better Than Goat leather case, deckled edges, and gold accents coupled with the Celtic medallion, which boasts both a dragon and a trinity knot. I thought this was fitting, given that the coin analogy between Merlin and Arthur comes up quite a bit in this fic - the idea that, because it's a canon AU, they've strayed away from their destiny, and what that could mean for Camelot. The trinity knot also symbolizes the cyclical relationship between life, death, and rebirth, which is another recurring theme throughout the story.
I also chose some medieval, old-style elements for my typeset, include the side ornaments, and making the margins bigger on the whole. I definitely need to bind more Merlin fic; I forgot how much of a delight this fandom is!

Carmilla (Le Fanu) & The Vampyr (Polidori)
Tumblr media
Starting off the new year right! I was incredibly blessed to spend 8 days in January in Athens, Greece, attending a leather bookbinding course taught by dimitris_bookbinding_corner alongside a lovely group of fellow @renegadepublishing members from around the world!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dimitris was a fantastic teacher, patiently dealing with all of our in-jokes, quips, and my bad habits (even if they made him cringe 😂). His teaching style satisfied my own thirst to know *why* you do something, not just that you're supposed to do it. Dimitris also challenged us to push outside of our comfort zones (I'm sorry guys before this every endband I ever sewed I opened up the book for every tie-down. yes, even all the ones in the last post.). I learned so much, and I hope to be able to put it into practice in the future. I highly recommend his classes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We bound a stunning Carmilla + The Vampyr combo typeset, created by fellow Renegade member @zhalfirin with art frames from Alphonse Mucha. I got a chance to work on leather and brass tooling skills in person (both things I was very nervous about!), repped Star Wars a lot, eat delicious Greek food and snacks, and best of all, the opportunity to spend a whole 8 days in Greece with the best group of people (and a whole lot of friendly cats!).

When I found this canvas with lemon trees I instantly thought of Grounds for divorce by #Tepre.
"A window, overlooking the garden, and through it came the branches of an old lemon tree. It was heavy with fruit, yellow jewels dotting the green" Ch. 8
I consider that this is the best book I've done since I started. At least has a lower mistake rate than my previous ones. I didn't want to add a title to the cover because I haven't really grasped the technique yet.

So so pleased with this one. I'm gonna try and cut the cord I used for the headbands a bit shorter next time but other than that I'm super happy! I used the normal circuit vinyl sticker and stuck it on with PVA glue so we'll see how that holds up over time. I didn't trim the corners quite right though so instead of folding over with a nice diagonal they're pretty straight. Still firmly affixed! I just need to practice eyeballing that (almost forgot to trim them at all! Lol)
Fic is We Will Meet Again by darksknight.
I included all parts of the series in this book and tucked them into place with a bit of editing so they flow chronologically. Love this fic and highly recommend!

Empty Graves by @unpretty and Empty Spaces (waves and particles) by kathkin
I participated in @renegadepublishing’s tiny book bang last year, and as participant I got access to all the typesets from the event. I saved the ones I thought I’d want to do, and yesterday I looked through that folder, spotted two fics with the word ‘empty’ in the title and thought “oh neat, i know and like these fics, and I can make matching-but-not-same binds for them”. I was delighted to re-discover that they were typeset by the same person, @little-cat-press, so I went ahead with the matchy idea.
Empty Graves is a Superman fic from the POV of Martha Kent, and just so happens to be one of my faves in unpretty’s sprawling series. I chose the marbled cover paper because it evokes stars and galaxies and space for me. The fic is very contained, localised - the Kent farm - but high stakes; Martha will protect her son from the universe if she has to (and she does), because her family is her universe. I liked the idea of wrapping this small-but-big fic in something that resembles the vastness of space. The spine is green to match the hints of green colour on the otherwise dark marble.
Empty Spaces is a Back to the Future fic from Doc Brown’s POV, and featuring transmasc Marty McFly. The Back to the Future movies are foundational to me, and this fic is simply wonderful, highlighting the unique friendship between Marty and Doc. For this I knew I wanted something that evokes time travel, and wound up with this section of a larger marbled pattern that resembles the sci-fi woosh of time (and space) travel. This spine is blue to match the hint of blue visible alongside the green.
Both marbled papers are from Jemma Lewis Marbling & Design. The insides are printed on 90gsm Munken Pure Smooth Cream. These are self-ended, so no endpapers. The bookcloth is sourced from Ratchford but I don’t know which brand it is.
These are A8 sized (printed on A4) - I believe the typesets are intended for letter sized paper, but as I’m not in the US A-series it is. This prints fine on A4. The margins to the sides are slightly wider than originally intended, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue here.
