Fanbinding: Hibernating with Ghosts by @fayet
Tumblr media
Getting stuck in Kaedwen in winter had never been on Jaskier's plan.

Hyped to share photos of the set I made at the end of 2023 for the @renegadepublishing annual exchange! In addition to "Hibernating With Ghosts" these volumes include 30 pencil illustrations by @saeculorum-art, the fic's prequel Silent friend of many distances, and a song (The Siren Song) by @stillmadaboutpetra. I was over the moon that they all agreed to allow their work included so i could make this for the lovely Kitty / @perfectlynormalbooks (thank you for the intro to the wonderful fic!!).

This book was bound in Duo dragonfly cloth, with marbled lokta and hand-foiled cover accents. All art not by saeculorum is sourced from public domain woodcuts. I went a little harder than usual on the typeset, but it was a lot of fun and I finally had a good reason to use a vertical header (the chapter titles are SO LONG) and colored dropcaps (i was printing color for the art, anyway!). I justified my embroidery thread spending with a fun five-color color endband, and I colored the top edge.

I had a lot of fun making this and trying our a few different ways of doing things! Thanks again to everyone for a wonderful Renegade Exchange!

He deserves to pull pranks and also to pine with no judgement. Well, almost no judgement.

My Familiar's Ghost AU Masterpost
(ID in alt and under cut)
ID. 1a. Close up of Ghost Guillermo doing a talking head to camera, his lower third reading 'Guillermo, ghost, familiar. Offscreen, the camera person asks, "So...do you wanna talk about what you got up to while you were invisible?" Guillermo, hands folded in front of him, trails his gaze away uncertainly and says, "Well..." 1b. Flashbacks. Colin sitting on the edge of his bed, back straight, hands on his knees, apparently in hibernation. Ghost Guillermo floats by him, invisible, grinning mischievously and holding a sharpie which he has just used to draw a penis on Colin's forehead. 1c. Guillermo watches as a letter labeled "familiar application" comes through the mail slot in the front door. 1d. Guillermo shoots blue lasers from his eyes and catches the letter on fire before it even hits the ground. 1e. Laszlo stands holding a vihuela and frowning as he tries to tune it, saying to himself, "Why does this bloody thing keep losing tune?" In the background, Guillermo just smiles widely. 1f. Back to the present, Guillermo shrugs at the camera with a nervous little smile, continuing, "Oh, you know...cleaning." 1g. One more flashback, Guillermo leaning against the back of a couch, chin buried in his folded arms as he looks sadly down at Nandor, who is laying sideways on the cushions with his knees curled up and his hands tucked under his head. Nandor looks forlorn and sighs aloud, murmuring "Guillermo..."
(caption)
2. Ghost Guillermo floating angrily behind the Nadja doll, fingers curled up in frustration as he shouts, "You could see and hear me the whole time??" Dolly keeps her back to him, hands in her lap and expression passive as she replies, "Of course I could, I was just ignoring you." /end ID

Summary:
You and Ghost find yourself together in a freezing shack after a mission failure.
Just fluff and nothing else.
It was supposed to be a simple job - of course they're all supposed to be simple - so simple that it had just been Ghost assigned to go with you. You aren't a fighter, you aren't even a member of the military. Laswell contacted you to help with the 141's current mission; they needed a way to monitor an urban terrorist cell, and that was where you came in. A hacker with no real ties, you owed Laswell a few favors, and she had cashed them easily.
You just needed to get in, insert a monitoring system on the network the terrorists were using, and get out. Ghost was supposed to escort you in, and escort you out. But no one had anticipated an ambush - it was obvious that the intel that was given to Laswell and Price was a deliberate ploy.
Dropping down beside Ghost, you curl yourself in closer to the small fire that he had built. Winter in Britain is brutal, and to a person from the Southern U.S. like yourself, it's almost unimaginable. Ghost had driven the two of you out of London at a breakneck speed, only slightly faster than his normal driving. When he was sure that the two of you hadn't been followed, he radioed Price who told him they'd be here in the morning to pick the two of you up, and got directions to a safe house.
Or a house that was safe. You hadn't stayed in too many safe houses in your life, but you were almost sure that they were houses that had electricity. Instead the directions led you and Ghost to a shack in some small village that was named something distinctly British, and empty from anything that could provide a modicum of warmth.
"How do you know the smoke won't tell people that we're here?" You ask, shoving your freezing hands under your shirt.
Ghost barely glances your way, his hands busy breaking apart a wooden chair to feed the flames with.
"It's storming too hard outside; the wind will carry the smoke away before it becomes visible."
You study him as he works, the tattoo on his forearm difficult to make out in the darkness. You had spent the last few weeks trying to figure out what each of the images could be or mean: the most you could make out was a skull, and a helmet on a gun - you desperately wanted to ask him if it meant anything, but you knew that was too personal.
Unable to stand the cold anymore, you stand, stretch, and begin to pace around the room.
"This is miserable; I don't understand how y'all can live here."
Ghost is silent as he deposits the broken chair wood in front of the fire. It's not until he jerks his thumb towards the two packs he unloaded from the car that he speaks again.
"It's late, we need to sleep. There's thermal blankets in the packs."
You watch as he pulls out two metallic bundles from the packs. He tosses one to you, and you catch it on the tips of your fingers.
Fully dressed, Ghost positions himself on the floor, feet from the fire. You position yourself catty corner to him, your feet pointing towards his. Outside the storm lashes against the shack, and you feel as if any moment it will cave in and crush you.
The blanket does nothing to protect you from the cold seeping in through the wood floor. You can't tell how much time passes, it feels like hours and -
"Can you stop fucking shivering? I can't get any sleep."
At Ghost's words, you freeze.
"Sorry, I'm not used to being in the fucking Siberian wilderness."
Ghost lets out a huff, and you don't know if it's a laugh or a sound of annoyance.
"This is far from Siberia princess."
You roll your eyes at the nickname. Laswell gave it to you three missions ago, and you absolutely hated it, but like every nickname, the more you fought against the name, the more it stuck.
"Don't call me that Ghost. And how many times have you been to Siberia?"
"More times than you would know."
You start shivering again; your teeth clattering together painfully. The heat from the fire barely touches your nose; you think about moving up closer, but that would mean getting uncomfortable close to Ghost, and he would probably gut you before-
"Come here."
His voice is annoyed, the razor thin edge of it carrying across the storm to you.
"Wh-what?"
In the dark you see him rise up slightly.
"Come here."
Heart beating quickly, you inch towards him, your brain starts conjuring up all the reasons he wants you near. You're almost positive that he has some sort of way to put you to sleep so you stop bothering him, and it won't be pretty, but you slide up beside him. He's not the type of person that you ignore after all.
You're sitting right beside him, your hands beside his chest. Before you can speak, he reaches up and grabs the back of your jacket; he yanks you down so that you're beside him. With a huff he layers each thermal blanket over the both of you. He lays back down, his back to yours and doesn't speak again.
Immediately you're a thousand degrees warmer from his body heat on one side of you and the fire on the other side. You rest your head on your arm as a makeshift pillow and try to relax. You can feel Ghost's breathing, hear the sound of him breathing behind his mask. It's almost soothing, but you're buzzing with electricity being so close to him.
You'd spent weeks at the compound with 141 searching for the terrorist cell, acting as the IT for the task force, and Ghost had said just a handful of words to you, but here you are, basically snuggling with him.
You shift, your back rubbing against Ghost's. His hand, large and warm even through the gloves, reaches over to clasp your side.
"Stop moving or you're sleeping outside."
You have to resist the urge to say 'yes, sir' to him. Staring into the flames, you will yourself asleep.
But it doesn't work. Although you're warm, you aren't warm enough to sleep, but you don't want to risk sleeping outside. You don't know him that well, but you know that Ghost doesn't bluff.
Ghost rolls over first and in the dark you can make out his eyes - the fire glinting in them. Looking at him, you get the wild urge to reach up and pull his mask up, to see what he hides under there. The silence grows thick and awkward; you shift, trying to dispel the feeling.
"I bet you didn't expect to find yourself here on a Friday night," you whisper, trying to sound joking, but coming off shaky instead.
"I'm not the one acting like this is the worst night of their life," Ghost says, his voice nearly monotone, but with a teasing edge to it.
You can't help but smile.
"Yeah," you start, raising one shoulder in a shrug, "but I've definitely had worse nights with worse dates."
"So this is a date?"
"If it is, it doesn't even make it in the top 5 worst ones I've ever been on."
At that Ghost reaches out towards you, throwing his arm over your waist and pulling you in closer. With a squeak you find yourself right beside him, your face nuzzled into his chest.
"Go to sleep," he whispers, pulling his arm away from you. "You can tell the guys how it was a good date tomorrow."
You can't help but smile into his chest, one hand coming up to curl in his chest. His breath is soft in your ear and you can't help but relax; the sound of the storm drifting into white noise as you fall asleep.

aether, waving frantically from the couch like a madman when he hears rain walk into the commons room:
rain, quietly inching closer to the couch and finding mountain curled up asleep in aether’s arms and draped over his chest: “woah, he finally fell asleep?”
aether, idly petting through mountain’s hair: “i know, tell me about it. swiss and dew were getting ready to knock him out with a frying pan if he didn’t stop pacing in the band practice rooms.”
rain: “ohh, is that why there’s dandelions growing through the floorboards?”
aether, nodding: “yup. the seasons changing really gets him all revved up for no reason.”
rain: “i get it. he wants to get stuff done before that inevitable winter drowsiness starts seriously setting in and makes it hard to do anything productive.”
aether: “ah, good point. i’m just glad this big guy finally fell asleep. he was walking holes through the chapel’s carpet. copia was starting to think we were beginning to have a bug problem—“
rain: “say, aether? why did you flag me over?”
aether:
mountain, contentedly snoozing:
rain:
aether: “i gotta get up…”

---
Quietly, Snape asked, “You obliviated entire years from your parents’ minds?”
“Yes. Was that—”
“Impressive.”
“Foolish.”
“Imperative.”
“But they’re—”
“Alive.”
