So. I know I just did a binding of The Disabled Tyrant's Pet Palm Fish, but that was a lectern book, and it's been tough to get a lectern binding that I'm completely and unreservedly happy with. If more practice is what it takes, then I'm game! But in the meantime.... this is the fish book. The romancing a fish book. The impatiently waiting for a fish demon to..... devour my essence book. The 'my servant thinks I'm fucking my fish' book. The fishpreg book. The fish themed wedding book. What, was I supposed to NOT use my exciting new fish leather??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, the struggle with fish leather is thst it comes in very irregular oval-y shapes. I wanted the spine to have the right weight, so I cut the biggest rectangle I could wrangle from the hide, and belatedly realized my remnants weren't large enough to get good corner pieces. So that's something to consider in the future! But despite that, the fish handled like a dream, the gold and brown aligned BEAUTIFULLY with a wave fabric I had in my stash, and I shamelessly went back to the scale themed endpaper well. I usually don't like repeating myself so quickly, but I had a lot of fun designing this typeset, and this story is just a delight on every level!

💥Binderary Bind # 3 💥
A collection of 15 stories by @greygerbil.( Highly HIGHLY recommend their fics)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the book title, I chose The Shield,The Spear, The Sword and chose another 14 of their stories (it was a struggle not to include all of them but i got tired of typesetting 😅)
Tumblr media
I made individual title pages for all of them (pic doesnt include all)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did keep the drop caps the same in every story as well as the same line break image (a cute little shield, spear, sword combo i made on canva) to add continuity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried a couple new techniques this bind.
Did my first ever rounded spine as well as some (easy and fake) raised bands. This was heavily inspired by those old traditional leather bound books.
Tumblr media
Progess pic before the faux leather.

rebinding: valdemar. (books that blooded me)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm still practicing my case binding and struggling but im genuinely pleased with this series of paperback rebinds. collected from a couple of library sales over the past many years (i still have my original hardcovers, too), i've taken a near-complete set of mercedes lackey's valdemar series and begun rebinding them as hardcover for a binderary project.
this is a basic flatback style. i stripped the paper covers, added mull and endbands to the spines, tipped on endpapers, and created cases for each book. the series is divided up into (mostly) trilogies so i set on a spine color for each trilogy. i chose a single font for the decorations and i scanned the paper covers to preserve the classic 90s jodi lee artwork. the artwork was printed on iridescent sticker paper and attached to the covers a paper well technique from DAS bookbinding. on the back of each book is a small sigil i designed for the main character(s) of each series.
i'm about halfway through. wish me luck!!
**i say 'books that blooded me' in the spirit of a devoted fated mates podcast listener. a lot of mercedes lackey has not aged well--the larry dixon of it all is A Problem--but these books installed a lot of buttons in me and i still love them. there is a simplicity and sense of joy i get from reading them--still.

who, me? using binderary as an excuse to finish an old project that's been on my desk for a year? yeah. oops 😅 (i moved, okay, it's not my fault it took six months to unpack all my bookbinding supplies)
anyway, here's the author's copy of complacency's gambit (by eyegnats), one of the first fics i ever bound! i think my typesetting skills have improved a lot since i printed the textblock, lolrip. i did try to make the author's copy a bit fancier than my own, though, with a ribbon bookmark and a leather spine :3
bonus pics of the new copy compared to the old one:

As part of this years Binderary my first goal is to reduce the pile of half-finished books before I start any new ones.
This book has remained unfinished for a whole year! I started it for LAST Binderary, planning to give it a hand-colorized Watercolor cover ... and then completely lost the spoons for painting. So it just sat there, frustrating me to no end, being basically finished but just missing the cover!
BUT NO MORE!
I finally said "fuck it", did some basic edge decoration which I don't love, made the bookcloth spine and slapped some marbling experiments on and called it a day. After all, "Perfect is the enemy of Done".
And I mean, it still turned out pretty nicely! It's a sewn-board book, the watercolor paper makes solid, the binding works, and it's a pretty little, albeit monochrome, book! And I still love the IDEA of this book: A coloring book, printed on watercolor paper, so it can take any kind of ink/paint, probably, featuring the gorgious Pride Angels by @ultrainfinitepit.
The only thing that really annoys me is that past-me either missjudged the endpaper grain direction (possible, albeit unusual) or noticed it and decided to use it anway (YOLO), presumably with some plan I've since completely forgotten. (Depressingly likely.)
But, hey, pretty book! XD

Binding of "If the sun goes down" (pasdeexcuses) and "There is always the moon" ( @firethesound ) with illustrations by @poxei. I wanted to do it as a dos-a-dos but I chickened out. It's the first book I've used HTV on, and it came out decent but with room for a lot of improvement. Now I still have to bind the author and artist copy. I'll make some changes for those because I learn from my mistakes ;D.
Fonts: Garamond Family and Two Wingy Dingy.

Binderary 5 - Fortunes Gained and Lost by @bubblesthemonsterartist
While rereading this in preparation for typesetting it, I noticed that some of the AO3 comments reminded me of book blurbs. So I just had to include them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hardest part was deciding between all the wonderful ship art out there in the public domain. The cover paper was printed on yellow cardstock and the spine is quilting fabric made into bookcloth.
Tumblr media
The headbands were hand sewn in yellow and white to match the cover.

I finished my binderary project! Herding Cats is a very fun shipping-centric Homestuck fic, so the design and color scheme for each volume is quadrant-themed. This project was definitely an exercise in learning and problem-solving. I enjoyed doing my first sewn endbands, learned a great deal about the foibles of commercial color laser printers, tested and ultimately abandoned an idea to stencil symbols on the covers (and amassed many white paint markers in the process) and am overall really happy with everything except the page edges. I attempted to file/sand them smooth, but didn’t quite get them where I wanted, and the shape of Vol IV’s foredge ended up being wonky. On the other hand, I did find that dremelling the boards to all be the same size was a good choice. Also, for the bookmarks, I couldn’t find any ribbon with pink or gray card symbols, but flipping the ribbon upside down ended up making the colors match perfectly!

Worked on some fics instead of just notebooks today, which brings me to 6 textblocks sewn so far for binderary! Somehow the one where I was using the last of a spool of thread was NOT the time I almost ran out of thread on the very last signature. What is my life.
Had a sad sad time realizing after printing an entire 260 page fic that I had accidentally deleted half the page numbers (honestly I would've preferred to have just deleted them entirely at that point) but now I have lots of misprints for glue paper? (thankfully it's only 65 sheets of paper but still) Problem has been fixed and I'll get it reprinted later this week. Could I have made it work? Sure. But this is the fic that I input sheet music by hand for the title pages so. Nah. We'll reprint it. I don't have the cover paper or end pages I want for this one yet, so it won't hurt me to wait a few more days.
ON THAT NOTE if you don't want to be encouraged to make every single possible purchase of fun paper or cloth that you come across, the Renegade server is NOT the place to be. Totally completely unrelatedly I have a huge stash of cool paper coming in the mail later this week. Totally unrelated to that first fact. Promise.

The Words Hung Above by eriaX
“I’m thinking of leaving.” Steve almost chokes on his cigarette, hastily moving it from his lips and looking to Eddie where he stands beside him. He looks relaxed, despite the words that just left his mouth. A thin trail of smoke travels up towards the sky from his own cigarette that’s pinched between his fingers. Watching the smoke slowly fade into nothingness feels oddly foreboding. Like this small, almost-friendship he has managed to build is going to fade away, too. He decides to hold on to it, if he can. --------- Or, After Vecna is defeated and life returns to normal, Steve finally has a chance to become actual friends with Eddie Munson. But any potential for friendship seems lost when Eddie decides to move to Nashville to pursue music after graduating. It’s Steve’s idea to become pen pals. Over summer and into fall and winter, Steve battles insecurities around himself, as well as his own future and his parents’ expectations. As his friendship with Eddie deepens into something greater, Steve finds that there’s more to himself than he expected, and more to his friendship with Eddie than he ever imagined.
fic by eriaX
500 pages / 118,368 words
Title Font: Breathing, Crimson Pro
Body Fonts: Californian FB, The Signature, Indie Flower
Bound for the Steddie Big Bang 2023!
More info (and spoilers for the fic, beware!) below the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a project! This was an endeavor with the author for the Steddie Big Bang, and it was so fun to design the vibe of this with them! Thank you for sharing your story and this journey with me <3
I love the letters that populate the story; if you skipped the content of them above, I highly recommend experiencing them in the context of the fic. I wanted to do something tactile to emulate them without interfering with the storytelling element; something that could stay archival in the future while also adding a dimension to the text. We selected the handwriting fonts together, and I fought the battle with my cricut to get it to write it properly. I had to go over carefully by hand to make the ink fill in well, but the result is perfect!
I also selected different inks as the months pass, even varying colors within Eddie's letters; I like the idea that maybe he was trying to make the letter perfect, doodling in the corners for Steve.
Music is another big device in this book, something that connects Steve and Eddie across the space between them, so musical notes and rests populate the header. Steve is Eddie's breath of fresh air amidst all the noise <3
I tried to keep the handwritten style across all the elements, including the title pages. We selected Dragonfly duo for the cover cloth, with gold accents; the deep blue color was reminiscent of the song that inspired the fic, and the gold felt fitting; the relationship that develops between Steve and Eddie being the sunlight leaking through the fear and uncertainty they face.
If you haven't checked it out yet, go read the fic!!!

Next, a pair of fanfics! I've been fighting really bad reading brain for a while now, which is SO frustrating when I have a fandom I know I love, authors I know I love, fanfic summaries that have my full attention-- and I can't get myself to start reading. So to try to sidestep that, I went ahead and bound two tossawary fics blind, Servant to a Different King, and A Child Once. It was hard not to go for some of the tossawary fics I've read and loved, but I really want to kickstart my brain into reading new things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these were a lot of fun to work with! I wanted to get blue somewhere in the binding for both books, because mobei-jun, but I didn't want to just take the lowest-hanging fruit. For Servant to a Different King, it slips in through the endpapers, and for A Child Once, it's the navy bookcloth. The bindings also weren't designed as a pair, but I still like to link things in quiet ways, so I took the endpapers from the same pack, and went with chaotic, high-energy ones, for Shang Qinghua. So I love how these came out, and I'm pleased to report that I've now read A Child Once! (not from my nice new book, that would be silly, i just suddenly unlocked my ability to read it on my phone)

Seeing as we're 1 week away from the start of February aka Binderary, am opening up the form for Mini (and now Tiny) requests.
Tumblr media
Had fun last year with it. Practice makes perfect as they say. Still working on my 10,000 hours. Obviously no promises, and there is the obligation of a written reply should I send you your request.
