In echoes, witches are made by sacrificing someone to the Mad God, and one of the final bosses involves a character we've seen turned into a unique fire-elemental witch. Her fight is more sad than scary, since she's just a silent, soulless echo of the kind woman we saw before.
I really liked combining this idea with the witch-hunt vibes in Bring it On. In my fantasy au, Fuuta wrongfully leads his band of knights against a village girl, resulting in the townspeople burning her before all the facts were laid out. She was using magic, which is what Fuuta called her out for, but she wasn't using it for any malicious or witchy purposes. When she dies, the bit of magic in her flares up with her emotion and she returns as this type of fire spirit. As well as Fuuta's abstract haunting guilt, he now has a silent, destruction-bringing ghost haunting him each time he tries to run away from what he did.

i’m new to Tumblr and i’m not sure if this is the place to ask but i’m a drdt fan and milgram looks really cool, however i’m not sure where to start or how to get into it, is there anything specific i should do or?
Ah, the DRDT -> Milgram pipeline strikes again I see. Welcome! And yeah, you can ask me anything! Milgram is really fun, even if it can feel a bit intimidating. Take your time! It's quite a bit.
Here is a playlist with some of the most important things in chronological order, and I'll also recommend this masterlink post by doctorbunny, but you can take things at your own pace and do whatever you want forever. However, I'll explain the main things, since there's a lot!
1- Jackalope's Announcements
The first thing you should probably watch is "Jackalope's "This is the MILGRAM"", which explains the premise of the series.
Inside a prison named the Panopticon reside 10 prisoners, all of which are, by some definition of the word, murderers. There is a Warden of this prison, named Es, who must observe their sins and decide whether they should be Forgiven* for their murder, or if they shouldn't be. This is done in a system of three trials. At the time of writing, the First Trial has been completed, the Second Trial is about to end, but we still have the entire Third Trial ahead of us!
Es learns of the prisoners' crimes mainly by watching music videos extracted directly from their minds, though they also interrogate them beforehand.
The twist? Es' decisions on Forgiveness are decided by the audience. Every Trial, after a prisoner's MV (music video) is released, for a period of time (three months), the audience votes whether the prisoner should be Forgiven or not for that Trial. This can be done in the Judge page of the official website or the app (link is for browser), and you can vote once per day. (Technically twice if you use both the official website and the app). You can also just not vote if you don't feel like it. Again you can consume media in any way you want.
[*The localization actually says "Innocent" and "Guilty" instead of "Forgiven" and "Unforgiven", but keep in mind when you vote you're not voting innocence or guilt, but forgiveness and unforgiveness.]
The next of Jackalope's announcements is the "Report on the End of the First Trial", which only really tells you about how each prisoner was voted T1 (Trial 1), something you'll learn about in other videos anyways, so it's not too important beyond some characterization for Jackalope if you care.
However, before you start watching the Second Trial MVs, I would recommend you watch "Second Trial Commencement Notice", which will give you insight into how the verdicts affected each prisoner. The consequences weren't made very clear during the first trial, but this video establishes them a bit more explicitly.
2- Music Videos
Welcome to the main event! The music videos are the main draw of Milgram, and through vague symbolism, extremely fun visuals, beautifully written lyrics, and banger songs, they tell you things about each prisoner. Don't worry if you don't quite get them at first, they're really complex and understanding them is a community effort! Feel free to come to your own conclusions or read analyses or anything else!
Now, the order you watch these MVs in... there's really no set order, beyond "you should probably watch the First Trial videos before the Second and Third Trial ones." You can watch them following the prisoner order listed in that playlist I linked, but if there's a character you're particularly interested in, you can also just watch theirs before anyone else's. In my personal experience, I actually watched Amane's and Kazui's before anyone else's because their Second Trial Voting was going on, then hopped around between Shidou, Muu, Kotoko... until a month later I realized "wait I never actually watched This is How to be in Love With You" I am so sorry Mahiru-
My point is: Do what you want, experience Milgram at your own pace.
There is one exception, of an MV you should probably watch before the others, and that's Undercover. This is a video connected to Es, which serves as an introduction to all the other characters. There is a lot to talk about in this video, from Es' characterization to a lot of symbolism for the prisoners, but it's a great starting point to theorize on what exactly each prisoner's murder was.
In any case, these videos are probably the most important pieces of information for the prisoners, to the point some Milgram fans just watch the videos and nothing else, but there's still a lot more if you want to dig deeper.
3- Voice Dramas
In-universe, before the songs are extracted, Es holds an interrogation with the prisoners, which are the Voice Dramas (VDs). The exception is Es' own Voice Drama, which in typical Es fashion is an introduction which also has some interesting information.
If you want to fully put yourself in Es' shoes, you can watch a subtitled version/read a transcript of the VD before watching the MV for that Trial, which is the way they're ordered in the playlist I linked. But again, do what you want.
The only reason I'm only mentioning them after the MVs is that not everyone feels like watching/reading them in full, which is fine, but be careful, you might be missing some critical information. The things stated in VDs are maybe not always as revealing as the MVs, but they're usually more direct and offer great characterization, so I'd recommend at least reading transcripts. Although the voice acting is always on point, so listening to them is always a fun experience!
4- Interrogation Questions
During the course of the Trials, there comes a point when the fans are asked to send the prisoners questions, and a selection of them will be answered by them. Since the creators hand-pick the questions they actually want the prisoners to answer, they range from very interesting to "why the hell are we asking this?" level questions. They're very fun and add a lot of information and characterization to the prisoners!
They're usually done in prisoner duos, so 01-02 (Haruka and Yuno) get the same questions, then 03-04 (Fuuta and Muu) get a different set, etc. The exception for now is T1 Mikoto and Kotoko, because Kotoko's T1 MV was delayed, and it may happen again since Kotoko's T2 MV was also delayed (not confirmed yet).
5- Timelines
In the Milgram app, there will occasionally be updates to the "Timelines" tab, generally during prisoners' birthdays. These feature conversations between the prisoners, which range from extremely funny, very interesting, extremely depressing, etc. They help build up the dynamics between prisoners and are the origin of certain fan-favorite platonic pairings. They sometimes give hints to the prisoners' backstories, but usually they're more for characterization purposes. You can find links to translations of these timelines in the masterlink post I linked to before (thanks doctorbunny you're very cool).
6- Cover Songs
Every Trial, apart from their original song for Milgram, each prisoner gets to cover one song from DECO*27's catalogue. There is no official confirmation these songs are chosen for any reason other than "they sound cool" (which they do!), but as someone who's looked at all of them pretty closely... listen, a lot of them fit extremely well. I personally think they are important, but that's up for interpretation. Also Es had one for T1, Hibana.
These are not to be confused with the Es prisoner song covers, which are done as celebration for when an MV reaches a million views. They are released in hiatus periods, which is why at the time of writing there are no T2 Es covers. These are mostly just for fun, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of characterization hidden here. I haven't actually heard them all yet oops.
7- And a lot more!
Milgram never really runs out of ways to reveal lore. From distorted lines in the Character Voice Trailers, fun visuals in the "Songs of Prisoners" teasers, fun symbolism in promotional art such as the birthday cakes, album covers, etc etc... There's no real way I can compile it all, just be patient and take your time! Most of it isn't too important, so don't worry too much.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, take things at your own pace! Milgram is a really unique experience, and given how the story is presented, you can engage with it in the way that feels the most comfortable for you! Just make sure you're always having fun! Take care!

[meet the prisoners!] prisoner 005: sanada kei
Tumblr media
the background is so bright and i am so sorry
THIS MAN. OH GOD THIS MAN. it was so hard to draw him for some reason. anyway, as i said, prisoner 005 is going to be one of the most insane and dangerous characters and his mv is. um. it's a lot. you'll see what i mean by that.
(check out my masterlist if you want to see other prisoners' profiles!)
Warnings: suggestive themes, unhealthy relationships (again), mentions of injuries/physical abuse, implications of kidnapping, UH.. that's probably it?
General info:
Name: Sanada Kei (真田圭) (his last name means "true" and "rice field" and his first name means "gemstone")
Age: 25 y/o
Gender: Male
Status: Prisoner 005
Birthday: August 20 (Leo)
Height: 177 cm (haha he's 1 cm shorter than Naomi)
Blood type: B
Image color: #FF4089
Occupation: Photographer
Personality: Kei is.. quite an interesting individual with a very "unique" personality. At first he just seems like a guy who will flirt with almost anyone and doesn't know how personal space works, but as you get to know him better, you start to realize that he's much more dangerous than you thought. It should be mentioned that Kei is actually not the most romantic kind of guy, he always gets straight to the point and even though he might say a cheesy pickup line or two, he will say what he wants from you almost immediately and he will make sure it's impossible for you to say no to him. However, even though he talks so much about "mature topics", this guy is a lot more childish than he looks like and he often gets mad at people for very stupid reasons. His mood swings are so unpredictable that even the bravest people find them terrifying, especially considering that he's not afraid of getting violent and he doesn't care about the whole "prisoners can't hurt guards" rule. And if he's not allowed to hurt the guards, then.. maybe he should simply try making the prisoners suffer instead. Also, if you listen to him more carefully, you can notice that Kei is actually a huge liar. And he's not even that good at lying. He can lie about his hair actually being green even though you can clearly see that it's red and he doesn't mean it in a "oh, green is actually my natural hair color" way. Most of the time he lies to make himself look more sympathetic and he's more than okay with manipulating the guards and other prisoners so that they think he's better than he really is. And the worst thing is that him lying so often actually makes his mvs.. a bit hard to watch, because it seems like he genuinely believes his own lies. According to Guard 001, Kei also loves to make people believe that he's the victim and not somebody else and he will do anything to make people trust him.
MV info:
Which canon Milgram song he would cover: .. he would actually sing After Pain. I am not kidding. LISTEN IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE TO ME as I said, Kei wants people to feel bad for him, he wants to be their poor little meow meow, so I can definitely imagine him singing a song like After Pain so that people can go "oh no.. 🥺🥺 he had to go through so much.. 😔😔 he's innocent fr!!" And those lyrics actually fit him a lot, I really want to talk about it more, but it would be a huge spoiler, so.. just think about the "But I guess some of it is my fault, maybe it's okay as it is" and ""I'm sorry" won't reach anyone" parts while you read his MV description >:3 Also I just really want him to do the "Let's meet up inside the pain" part because it would sound so good with his voice and it actually describes his crime really well, haha.. Also I just thought it would be funny because the song is called "After Pain" and he's a huge sadist so..
Which DECO*27 song he would cover: Look me in the eye and tell me he would cover anything other than Vampire.
If he could cover a song by a different Vocaloid producer, which one would it be: Party Junkie by Satsuki ga Tenkomori.
His MV description:
His MV would have very bright neon colors, but they would become darker in certain parts and his song would sound like something you could hear in a club, it would be fun and catchy.. until you actually check the lyrics and 1) you realize that the lyrics have obvious sexual subtext and 2) you suddenly remember that this guy is a murderer.
We can see a room that looks a lot like something you could see in a Tear Drop MV and a bright pink couch with five women in revealing outfits sitting on it, but we can't see their faces. Kei walks closer to the couch and pulls out his camera to take a photo, but the scenery suddenly changes and now he's taking a photo of his friends who are about to go and have fun at the club. The music starts playing and all guys are smiling, including Kei, who enters the club with them. Their girlfriends join them as well and we can see that all guys here have a girlfriend.. except Kei. Kei is still laughing and smiling with everyone, but the colors are darker now and we can see that Kei actually finds this party boring and he even looks.. disgusted with his friends and their girlfriends? The lyrics mention how tired he really is and that he wishes to just forget everything, but then Kei puts his pink sunglasses on and everything goes back to being bright and colorful again. He's still pretending to have fun, but now we can clearly see that his emotions are fake.
But then, Kei notices someone and his eyes start sparkling and even when he takes off his sunglasses, he still looks like he really is in love. He leaves his friends and tries to follow that stranger and as he does, he touches one of the drinks and it becomes the same color as his image color. That stranger starts running away from him, but Kei still refuses to leave them alone and everything around him becomes brighter and brighter. Kei finally succeeds and when he grabs that person's hand, he looks at the stranger with a wide smile on his face and whispers "I caught you~".
We go back to that pink room from the beginning and now the song sounds a bit calmer, but the lyrics are more messed up now and Kei's voice sounds like he's slowly losing his mind. We can't see that stranger, but we can see Kei taking more photos and his "model" is most likely that person he caught. There's a lot of photos on the walls and while some of them are actually beautiful and they don't look that suspicious, for example, some of them are pictures of flowers, animals, Kei's friends, etc, most of them look like they have blood stains on them, though the blood is the same color as Kei's image color, just like that drink from earlier. Some of them also have something written on them and when you look closer, it says "You're not allowed to see this~". Kei puts another photo on the wall and when he walks away, it becomes stained with blood as well. He suddenly hugs the stranger and we still can't see them that clearly, but Kei looks genuinely happy this time. If you look closer, you can see that this person's arms and legs are bandaged and they have bandaids on their face and you also can notice that same drink on the table.
Kei grabs his phone and checks the time. He sighs and it looks like he doesn't want to go, but he still smiles at his.. lover? Muse? Victim? He takes their hand and kisses it and promises that he won't let "someone" hurt them because no one can hurt them as bad as he can. We can see Kei knocking on the door and it looks like his friends are having a party and he couldn't miss it even though he didn't want to go. One of his friends opens the door and smiles at first, but then he looks at the person standing next to Kei and screams. Kei just puts his pink sunglasses back on, comes inside with that person and closes the door.
His Trailer 1 Voicelines:
"Hiii, Sanada Kei here~ So you two are the guards, right? Hehe, you are so adorable. Please take good care of me~ I'm sure you will understand why I committed my "crime". You're not like my friends who left me after they found out I'm a little.. "different" from them.. Wait a second, are you.. Ei-"
"You're the only person who knows how hard it is to be.. well, me. Hey, can I come closer? I just think your eyes are beautiful, that's all. Hehe, you truly are the only person in this world who can inspire me."
Trivia:
Yes, he's wearing those sunglasses from Tear Drop. When I first came up with Kei's design, I knew that I want him to wear sunglasses and then I was like "haha, what if i turn it into a Tear Drop reference". But now it's not just a reference, but an important part of his character, but I'll leave that to you to figure out >:3
Speaking of Tear Drop, I actually thought of making him cover this song, but for some reason I just can't imagine him singing it? Like his voice just wouldn't fit.. Also it feels a little too obvious and I think After Pain describes his crime better and fits him more.
His murder isn't his only crime and he had done many, many bad things before he ended up in Milgram. His number of victims is a secret.
There's a reason why Prisoner 005 and Guard 001 have the same last name and it's because they're brothers. However, Eiji won't go easy on Kei just because it's his brother, in fact, he wants him to be voted guilty more than all the other prisoners.
He truly believes that he will get an innocent verdict even though his own brother wants him dead because "he's sure there are other people who won't let him get a guilty verdict simply because he's too hot".
He's especially close with Prisoner 003 and Prisoner 006 and it seems that he's not just trying to become friends with them, he actually wants their relationship to be deeper than that. Yes, with both of them. And when I said that Shun has a very toxic relationship dynamic with someone, I meant him.
He sees himself as a "dad friend" because he's the oldest male prisoner even though he's not much older than most prisoners here. Also almost all prisoners agree that he's too irresponsible to be their "dad".
Even though it might seem that Kei is another "yandere" character (heart motifs in his design, themes of obsession, etc), he's not exactly that, at least he's definitely not the romantic kind of yandere and not even a platonic one, like Aimi. Maybe him trying to make himself look like someone who was so loyal to his lover (if that person even was his lover) that he was basically obsessed with them is just another lie?

MILGRAM theory time: Haruka!
This isn't going to go super in depth (famous last words) but there's a few heavily debated parts of Haruka's MV I want to share my findings/thoughts on because I think this is my new special interest and during my quest to get best boy's song to 1 million views I have been looking over his first MV with a fine tooth comb so to speak.
Disclaimer: As the Jackalope said in the "This is the MILGRAM" trailer, we don't necessarily know everyone's crime from just the first video, its possible that a lot of things will be re-contextualized in the second MV, however I am not psychic or bilingual and thus will only be working with content released before August 20th 2021 and translated into English (which could cause some language/cultural details to be lost on me as translation is not a 1 to 1 process).
TW for discussions of ableism, child abuse, murder and animal death. Also this is really long so sorry to all the people that follow me for non-MILGRAM stuff
Firstly, I want to start on the topic of Haruka as a person. He is disabled. He does not have 'the mind of a child' (although he is 17, making him legally a minor in both North America and Japan). He is not just 'child-like'. And he is not mentally ill (well he might be, in the sense that many disabilities like Haruka's have strong comorbidities [where a person has two or more conditions but neither directly causes the other] with anxiety, depression and PTSD, but usually when I see people talk about him 'struggling with mental illness' they go on to refer to aspects of his disability). Sometimes on tumblr, people like myself, will see canonical traits written into a character and identify them as being traits associated with our disabilities/mental illness and headcanon them as such. Sometimes this even involves saying things like "It's basically canon!" Although we understand that these characters were probably not the result of a writer intending to write a disabled person. When I say that Haruka is being written as a person with a neurodevelopmental disability, I mean the writer intended to write a disabled character and wrote them in a way that they wanted the audience to pick up on. As an autistic person (which is one of many neurodevelopmental disorders and also something I probably didn't have to specify because who else would be writing an essay about a series they got into a few days ago at 11 o'clock at night) I really like how Haruka has been written so far. There's definitely some parts of him that have been exaggerated so abled normies can pick up on his disability (namely how his MV 's main motif is really child-like drawings) but the writers also included a lot of smaller details I appreciate like how it is noted he avoids eye contact when talking to other people and is depicted as nervously pulling at his sleeves in official artwork, or how he says he finds his prison uniform (which has tight straps) 'relaxing' and when he gets nervous/tense, he will dig his fingernails into the palm of his hands. (These last two potential being examples of 'self stimulation' [aka stimming] where a person seeks out specific sensory stimuli in order to help regulate their nervous system/emotions, in this case the tight uniform creates a comforting, secure feeling [you may have heard about some people preferring to sleep under weighted blankets for this reason] and digging nails into his palms sounds uncomfortable/painful but is done in an attempt to deal with a greater sensory discomfort caused by the situation/environment) I also appreciate the depth he is written with, he struggles to communicate verbally but in his MV and interactions with other inmates is shown to have insecurities, opinions and a consistent thought process (this is all basic character stuff but unfortunately not always present in disabled characters)
Also I want to add that (in terms of what we've been shown so far) Haruka did not kill anyone because of his disability/mental illness. Disabled people are not inherently more innocent than abled people. But there is no disability/mental illness where a symptom is that you kill people and real people have to live with the stigma when you speak carelessly and suggest things like "Haruka is the kind of mentally ill person who kills people as a cry for help" 🧂 (or at the very least real people have to read BS like that and cringe). TL;DR Haruka is less child-like and more onion-like (as in, he has layers) 🧅🧅🧅
Now is the actual theory stuff, oops:
Every prisoner in MILGRAM is supposed to have committed murder in some way, obviously considering Yuno just had an abortion (which i personally do not consider an act of murder) whilst Mu literally stabbed someone to death, this definition is stretched a bit. But it is not agreed upon yet who Haruka killed/how many people he killed or why he killed.
In his MV he is shown to have chased after his dog into a forest, seen something off-screen, then beaten something into a messy pulp with a rock. Some people think the dog is a red herring and that Haruka actually killed his mother/the girl from the fireworks show/his brother. I do not agree.
First: I believe Haruka when he says he doesn't have a brother. The MV literally starts by Haruka looking in the mirror and then switching between the him now
Tumblr media
and a really similar looking younger child who just so happened to be a key feature of his memories (I don't have the vocabulary to explain it but its like cinematic parallels that establish this is the same person at different points of their life)
Tumblr media
Its not impossible that this is Haruka's secret younger brother, but i think its unlikely. I saw someone saying they had to be different people because Haruka looks less happy than the child but like, most 17 year olds are less visibly happy than when they were 7 (or however old the child is meant to be). Life happens.
So when Haruka is shown pushing the child around and eventually strangling him, this isn't meant to be literal (homicide or suicide), but a representation of how conflicted Haruka feels about his younger self, who may have committed the murder (if you've ever been kept awake cringing at memories of something you said in the past and wishing you could go slap some sense into your former self, this is like that but 10 times more self loathing). The lyric "I am always repeating yesterday," implies he might think about this specific past event a lot.
Moving on, its pretty well accepted that Haruka's parents were abusive in some way and Haruka internalised a lot of it: he constantly apologises, he says in his interrogation questions that his one wish come true is that "[he] want[s] to be loved" and describes in his MV how when he couldn't find the words he was looking for ("you're unfair") one of his parents "would get angry at me and say “You’re hopeless.”". He seems to know its unfair but also still says he 'loves' his family, possibly mistakenly believing it is his fault, but also showing an awareness of his situation (and how his parents might behave).
Now, the MV is stylised in a way that makes certain details unclear, but there is one clear detail showing that Haruka's dog was killed
Tumblr media
This is the first close up of Haruka and the dog. Haruka's mother is just out of frame supervising, but they look pretty happy. Notice how the puppy has a silvery chain for a collar. Somehow, this dog gets out of the house but only Haruka is shown chasing after it (whether his mother was searching elsewhere or didn't bother following her disabled son into the forest is unclear). Either way, young Haruka is now in the forest, unsupervised.
Tumblr media
By the time he finds the dog, there is already blood, suggesting it was initally attacked by something else.
Tumblr media
is this a sigh of relief from a boy whose finally found his beloved pet or a jealous weakling glad that nature took its course and he is finally free of that meddling mutt stealing all his mummy's attention? /j
Tumblr media
I think this shock at the discovery that 'there is blood on his hands' could imply that rather than literally getting the blood from his dog, Haruka has seen his already injured dog and realises that if the dog got out because of him (he is previously shown to be aware his parents seem to blame him for everything) then he is the reason his dog is injured/dying and will be blamed for it. (this scene plays over the lyrics "It’s fine, though it’s really not It’s really fine, though I don’t really think so When I tried to understand it, You’ll make that disappointed face again" suggesting he is trying to avoid making his parents disappointed and letting the family pet escape into danger is something that could make them very disappointed)
Tumblr media
now we get into rock murder (this is present-day Haruka implying that this is either: not how the scene really played out; the writers really wanting the audience to know that this was Haruka's doing and not someone else's; or this turns into a separate incident that happened much later [although note that the red sky and blue moon is the same as when young Haruka first appears at the start])
Tumblr media
b the corpse is beyond mangled now, but its clearly the dog because the silver chain collar is still there, to the right of the body. (circled in red for your convenience :3)
My hypothesis is: Haruka didn't set out to kill his dog, but upon finding it injured (we don't know the severity aside from bleeding and also it not being able to run away from Haruka kneeling down above it w/ a big rock so it could range from treatable with a lot of vet help to already on death's door, TBH I don't think Haruka would know the difference) He knew he'd be blamed for this; made into a villain who let the poor puppy come to harm. He panicked and killed the dog out of some idea that it would make him the victim here (since he'd be found crying over a dog corpse, which might make a parent go comfort him rather than getting angry about what could've happened to the dog). This is over the lyrics: "I cried, I screamed I wanted to be a pitied and loved weakling I was in denial, I was in denial I just had to make sure I’ve become a victim, I’ve become a victim" (there's another theory that he was also jealous of the dog, which could work here too, since this is not some calculated plot; rather its a rash decision) This ties in with his Japanese song title (translated as Weakness) which is a play on a phrase sort of like "The strong eat, the weak do not" to become "The weak are eaten by society" or "The weak eat each other to survive" [once again I am reminding everyone this is based on second hand information from the youtube comments section (from users mitchki and Alphaistic) because I do not speak Japanese] This second meaning (The weak eat each other to survive) makes sense under the reading that Haruka killed his dog in order to 'survive' making his parents disappointed for the dog escaping.
Miscellaneous points:
We don't know where Haruka's necklace came from yet, it must be a gift since the most expensive thing he's ever bought was cotton candy. The younger child in the video isn't wearing it and neither is his mother or the girl in the purple dress.
Haruka's home seems quite big, at the start we can see a large flower garden outside the window and there's a forest in walking distance. This might suggest his family is quite wealthy
Tumblr media
Haruka probably did go to school at some point as homeschooling is not a legally accepted as an alternative to public schools in Japan. (However it is estimated that up to 5000 families homeschool, this is uncommon) A lot (about 62%) of Japanese schools apparently have a 'special needs' classes and there are about 505 schools focused on educating intellectually disabled students (although I do not know which sort Haruka would've needed as whilst intellectual and development disabilities can be comorbid they aren't the same). Now, if children aged 7-14 don't go to school, their parents receive a fine, but its possible that if Haruka's parents are wealthy, they just paid it to avoid sending him to school. (This might imply they wanted to hide him or were generally ashamed of him in some way) However high school education (for students over 14) is not legally required and its likely that even if Haruka went to elementary/middle school, he hasn't been around people his own age in at least 3 years. As he seems quite lonely and glad that the other prisoners give him attention.
I don't think Haruka's parents are divorced and if they are, its not his father who left. Haruka mentions in the 30 questions that he thinks he disappointed his father. But still includes him as part of his family ("My father and mother and me"). A theory I've seen is that his father was disappointed by his son being disabled and left. but developmental disabilities (especially in non verbal and semi verbal children like Haruka) can be diagnosed before the age of 3, so I feel it is unlikely that Haruka would bring up his father if he left that early in Haruka's life
All MILGRAM prisoners have covered one of DECO*27's older vocaloid songs (DECO*27 is a well known producer who composes the music for MILGRAM) Haruka covered 'Two Breaths Walking' (https://youtu.be/puXLfVWrz2Q) which is about a boy's first relationship and how his mother's jealousy set him up for failure as the relationship becomes toxic (specifically it has some very funny out of context lines like "Whose breasts are you sucking on now?") so yeah, mommy issues: the song (Also: some people say in the song, the boy kills the girl at the end, but this isn't literal, TBW is the first of a trilogy of songs about the same relationship, it is followed by Android girl then Two Breaths Walking: Reloaded and the story resolves with the couple reuniting as adults and getting in the relationship again, although its not necessarily as abusive as before, its still implied to be codependant ending on the line 'We should live like oxygen tanks, sucking breathe from the words each of us exhale, until our last breathe')
In all seriousness, the scene where younger Haruka is walking through the city with his mother but it keeps repeating until older Haruka pulls the younger one away might indicate an attempt to focus the happier memories of his parents (since this is also over the lyrics "Why is it breaking? Tell me why? Please don’t change If I tried and couldn’t say it, You would get angry at me and say “You’re hopeless.”" which depict a worse scene) I think both his parents are still physically present but have become far more emotionally distant, not giving him as much attention, which exacerbates his loneliness from not having any friends his own age to talk to
And if one of his parents did leave? I think its likely his mother since she is shown disappearing out of his reach after the dog-incident (inferring she got angry/disappointed in Haruka anyway) This could also be where he got his necklace from: Its something his mother used to wear (although this is 100% a guess) and that's why its shown to be important to him
This one is just me, but i didn't realise until a rewatch that when Haruka is watching the younger him and the girl running together, the background has fireworks. Haruka mentions fireworks being a key memory to him so I wonder if this was one of the first/last times he got to make a friend...
On three separate occasions in the interrogation, Haruka mentions not liking animals. Despite this, he is depicted as sleeping with a rabbit plush and on his birthday art (I'd include that too but tumblr only allows 10 pictures per post, so here's a link) he is standing next to a giant blueberry and strawberry cake with two bunny themed biscuits at the side. Through my experiences of seeing Japanese fandom art on pixiv, sometimes rabbits are used to insinuate a character is cute and timid in fanart.
Tumblr media
Meaningless details: Haruka sleeps with his necklace on; he sleeps on a bed and not a futon; at first I thought he woke up holding his plush's hand but his hand is merely next to the toy; and considering the state of the pillow and blanket, I wonder if he moves a lot in his sleep or if the is just because in this case he seems to be waking up from a nightmare about the dog incident...
Final note: I've spent so many hours writing this I don't remember if i was building up to any big finale or not but I hope you enjoyed reading this! Feel free to add on in the comments/reblogs.

And So It Begins playlist
imiSome of you might know that I started a new DanganRonpa fic called ‘And So It Begins’, which happens to be an SYOC. A lot of songs have inspired my writing of it so far, as well as some of my planning, so I figured I may as well begin a playlist of sort. It is a work in progress, so more songs will be added over time, and the links (put in the song name) to the videos will also only be put in as and when I can. But yeah, I hope you enjoy: (Quick note 11/11: I have also decided to add some quick notes next to certain songs to explain why they have been chosen for the playlist, where I did have specific things in mind for them. If anyone else has interpretations of how certain songs relate I’d be all for sticking those in here too-with credits, of course)
Mafumafu-Keep Out
Fantastic Youth- DAYBREAK FRONTLINE (rap arrange ver) (This song is for the happier moments in the story, particualrly those between the whole group/ larger parts of the group, and any moments that, in a different story, would have simply been carefree and youthful. Also check out this dance version, as I will be making an Ending Song chapter based on it)
Nuyuri ft flower-Proto Disco (This song is meant to be reflective of how the characters are descending down a dark path in the choices they make and the events that draw them closer to creating a killing game.)
HENSHIN ft GUMI- One Moment’s Crime (This song can relate somewhat to the system Hope’s Peak has in this story. It is also the ‘opening song’ for the story, as you may have noticed)
THE SIXTH LIE- HIBANA
Eve-Dramaturgy
Jonas Blue ft Jack and Jack-Rise (This one is about the rebellion aspects of the story)
Police Piccadilly ft Miku Hatsune-Separate (This song is meant to relate to certain pairs and possibly trios in this story, and the bittersweetness of the fact they have developed such closeness in such bad circumstances. I’d say I have Mizuki and Mokomichi in mind particularly here, but it could easily apply to others too. This is also the first ED song of the story)
Do As Infinity-Kenshin no Kemono
Foreground Eclipse-When Innocence is Just a Mask (This one is definitely also about the rebellion aspects of the story, but perhaps at a later stage of the story, where some characters may be more fatalistic about it. When they are further down the rabbit hole, so to speak.)
Natsushiro Takaaki-Endroll (also check out this chorus cover done by CATINABOX for round 2 of the Ascencion Chorus Battle 2019-my personal headcanon is that Reirei’s voice is like Emiko’s singing voice)
brave elements-Bakudan Ma (cover)
Zutto Mayonaka de ii no ni-Humanoid
Wowaka-Unknown Mother Goose
Luschka-Moratorium (This song is related to the remorse some people might feel from being involved, wondering if they’d ever be forgiven)
Sayuri x MY FIRST STORY-Reimei
Dima Lancaster ft BrokeN-Feed the Fire (cover) This one is definitely related to the point of the story where everything gets awful and there’s no turning back
ONE OK ROCK-We Are (This song can relate in some ways to how some characters see themselves as doing something good in the situation. Also a song for how they may have started off feeling when setting off on this endeavour, or the general feelings of Reserve Course oppression. )
AmaLee-Again (English Cover) (This song could link to some relationships within the story)
Cepheid ft Un3h-Chronos (this one is about feeling helpless about the situation, and how some characters are having regrets about it)
Minstrel-Fiction
AViVA-Blame it on the kids
Hanatan-Niwaka Ame
Misumi ft flower and Miku Hatsune-FAKE (see also this cover)
Dean Lewis-Waves
nameless-Toumei Elegy (cover)
HarryP- 泥中に咲く(blooming in the mud)
MurasagiYT-Little Parade (English Cover)
DECO*27 ft Miku Hatsune-Otome Dissection
Three Days Grace-Riot (Thanks to tobi-is-an-artist-too for this one. I am sure the reason for it’s inclusion is self explanatory lol)
Yunosuke ft Miku Hatsune-Spiral
2NE1-Come Back Home (Japanese unplugged ver)
Tears of Today-Corregret
Zutto Mayonake de ii no ni-mabushii DNA dake
Pizuya’s Cell X Barrage Am Ring ft Meramipop -my temperature is zero degrees
Rupert Pope and John Robertson ft Isla Meller-Coming Round
After the Rain (Soraru x Mafumafu)-yuudachi (evening rain) (this one could relate to some of the character dynamics between certain pairings, particularly between cast members and some side characters as the relationships become more distant/deteriorating. It can also relate to the feeling some characters might have at their youth slowly slipping away as the story continues)
ONE OK ROCK-Mighty Long Fall
Akiakane-FlashBack (I am planning to use this for a second OP song chapter at some point ^.^, and the actual PV of the song will inspire the sequence I write for that. Also, this is such a good song about falling apart and grief and betrayal so it fits really well with later events)
*Luna ft  來 -Epilogue (Also check out the chorus cover done by EncripT for round 1 of the Ascencion Chorus Battle 2019. Anyway, this one is about being able to make one’s own choices and how the idea of doing this has served as a motivation for some characters)
Fractured Light Music-These Final Words
Fractured Light Music-We Dream of Stars
Fractured Light Music-Goodbye
Ludovico Einaudi- I Giorni
Eve-Yamiyo
Tokyo Teddy Bear English Chorus Cover
YURRY-CANON ft GUMI-Humanly
Eve-This World To You (For the bittersweet moments and the bereavement)
CYPHER-Redmoon (another one for the rebellion themes, and also the theme of doing something that you cannot go back from)
Misumi ft Hatsune Miku-Weird Beast
chorus cover of ‘Bolero’
Zutto Mayonaka de ii no ni-Seigi (justice)
After the Rain (Soraru x Mafumafu)-The equation for the beginning of love (a particular couple relationship is what I have in mind with this song, because the song characters are sweet awkward dorks and so are the characters of the couple)
Fantastic Youth-Mairieux (acoustic arrange)
Nathan Wagner-Innocence (because well, they will end up losing it, won’t they?)
Fantastic Youth-I thought I was an angel (cover and rap arrange) (Kinda self explanatory-they started out trying to do the right thing, thinking they were the ‘angels’ in this. Of course, they aren’t really, are they?)
Jayn-With Love (for the slightly more supportive/positive aspects of various character relationships, both platonic and romantic) UVERworld-Touch Off Dasu x Ensou ft Len Kagamine-Jet Ammo
Memai Siren-Ajisai
Crusher-P ft Miku Hatsune-Propaganda! (both about the elitism of Hope’s Peak and how they’re trying to present this very particular image, and also how dangerously close-knit the cast get)
ALEXANDROS-Pray (There’s a lot of cases of characters wanting to help each other, and not knowing how. So this song is about that, and those particular relationships)
FELT-Until Tomorrow
MAN WITH A MISSION-Remember Me
Aron Wright-How You’ll Be Remembered
JubyPhonic- Häagen-Dazs Ika no Sappuukei (English Cover) (This inspired the scene with Keiko on the roof in Party Time, part 1. I guess this could be a song for the main event of Preparation/Party Time in general)
BRAVES ft Nikki Reed-World’s On Fire
Fantastic Youth-Totemo Suteki Na Rokugatsu Deshita (cover)
Wolpis Kater-1% (Melon soda no hoshizora wo)
Studio Yuraki-Mukanjyo(English cover) (this fits with the themes of the story so well in general)
Misumi ft Hatsune Miku -Alter Ego (there’s something about the darkness of Misumi songs that fit so well with ASIB aaaaa)
chorus cover of ‘0verf10w’
Raon Lee X KOBASOLO-Philosophy of Adversity
chorus over of ‘Yankee Boy Yankee Girl’
Eve x Rib-Lear
Pizuya’s Cell-Midnight Liberty
Studio Yuraki-MAYDAY (cover)
Mitei no Hanashi-Drown in the Night
YOASOBI-Racing into the Night (check out this group cover too)
Fantastic Youth cover of no title
chorus cover of Los!Los!Los!
Sou-Mr Fixer
Techniken ft Lollia and Sohly-Make Me, Hate Me
Eve - ‘Love & Destroy’ (cover ver-originally by Mi8k ft GUMI) There are a fair few good covers of this really, but I picked this one because Eve.
FUZI x Neru ft Luschka and Mas Kimura-Optimi2er
Chorus cover of ‘RENEGADE’ (come on, tell me this isn’t a Shino song. Or even an Emiko song, for that matter. I dare you.)
SYND!CATE-In The Elegy (a chorus cover mash-up of ‘In the End and ‘愛迷エレジー ‘. Yes, really.)
Nathan Wagner-New Horizon
Neru ft Len and Rin Kagamine-Becoming Potatoes
Wild Fire- Everybody Knows (cover)  (about the elitism, obvs)
Harry-P- 徒花の涙
Ivy Adara-Rebels
GRIMES- We Appreciate Power (feat Hana)
Opening song for ‘Get Even’ (BBC drama)
THE BINARY- 花に雨を、君に歌を
MILGRAM-Undercover
Mafumafu- 悔やむと書いてミライ
Sou’s cover of ‘Penguin’s Detour’
HANDEAD ANTHEM-Why Not?
MARETU- ドクハク  (The link leads to a dance cover because why not? But this one would link to the more violent events and mindsets that develop over the story)
Stray Kids-District 9
KIRA-RISE UP NATION (Quite a few of the cast could be seen as misfits in some way, and they are all for causing trouble and making changes)
*Luna ft GUMI-Black Out Stray Kids- SLUMP (English Ver) (Deteriorating relationships of all sorts, and the emotional conflict that some of the characters are going through especially as they realise that they are at the point of no return.)
Red-The War We Made (Well, it’s more or less a war anyway)
Citizen Soldier-Hope It Haunts You (I’ll let you all theorise over this one lol) Citizen Soldier-Would Anyone Care? (Suggested by PainX65, as fitting certain characters, moments and even Hope’s Peak’s actions over the story)
Eve-How to Eat Life
MYTH&ROID-Remembrance (Goes without saying that Remembrance is in a way one of the stronger motives behind what our cast are doing, in a macabre way)
No Resolve-What You Deserve
Nine Lashes-Guilty Hands (They all have them)
Nathan Wagner cover of ‘The Kill’
Mako Niina-Sensen no Realism (The implications/consequences of what they are all doing hitting them)
After the Rain-Kono Yubi Tomare
Mashiro cover of ‘That Summer Saturates’ (the heady fallout of being involved in a crime with friends, and the general intensity of adolesence, and how the two combine)
chorus cover of ‘Nocturnal Creatures’
Fumiko Uchimura-Dotte Koto Nai Sympathy

[ENG] Interview: Yuka Aisaka on Yuno
What are the true intentions behind these judgements? Yuno appears to be an ordinary girl at first glance, but Yuka Aisaka knows what she’s actually like on the inside. What does she mean by that?
Co-produced by DECO*27, one of the leading Vocaloid composers, and Takuya Yamanaka, known for his human psychology oriented literary style, this original work, “MILGRAM”, is a viewer participation type music project. The MVs, which are the keys to unlocking the prisoners’ sins are currently being released!
Animate Times is conducting an email interview with the voice actors participating in the project! Our third guest is Yuka Aisaka, who voices Yuno. This time, we’d like to hear about Yuno, one of the prisoners, who was “involved in someone’s death”, and about the project itself.
Note that an interview about Yuno's first trial song "Umbilical" will be published later once the full song and MV have been released.  Please have a look at that one as well!
Participating in a project, where one expresses their core self in a song
“MILGRAM” has finally started, so please tell us what your thoughts were upon hearing the outline of this project.
When I first looked at it, I was thrilled. After all, I’ve never been involved in a production of this nature before. Above all, what made my heart leap was the feeling that this concept and these tastes mysteriously echoed the parts of myself, which have yet to grow up. I was also drawn to the idea of expressing one’s core self in a song.
Please tell us your first impressions upon seeing Yuno’s character.
Her outward appearance depicts an ordinary young girl, so I was surprised at how different her character was—in a good way. I was immediately convinced that this seemingly normal girl had,  contrary to what you’d expect, some kind of emptiness within her heart.
It’d be nice to nuance these aspects to imply a hint of coldness and her losing-heart within them.
Yuno’s voice has also been released, so please tell us what aspects you paid attention to when playing her part.
Even when Yuno says cute things or seems like she’s in high spirits, I thought it’d be nice to nuance these aspects to imply a hint of coldness and her losing-heart within them.
Did the staff give you any explanations or directions for her role beforehand?
My portrayal of Yuno’s public display and true self had to be very different to one another, but I was relieved when they told me I could do more and more for her character. For this sort of work, delivering dark lines with a hint of cuteness is often what they want, but since it’s Milgram, I thought I’d just perform according to how I felt.
Since observations hold the key to a project like this, it is expected that there will be discussions among users on the official app and social media. Please tell us how you would personally enjoy “Milgram” or if you have any suggestions for those users.
It sure is difficult! By all means, I’d like you to savour the ruthless atmosphere of this work, but to tell you the truth, I’m hoping that everyone will be saved. So, if you write a story, make a comic or draw fanart of a super duper happy ending for this project… I, at least, will go and take a look at them.
Thank you very much.
