You can't save everyone

Happy Lowman x Reader | Part 3

Being in Charming again was strange, but above all it was scary. You had been out of the city for about five weeks, and now you were afraid that they hadn’t missed you or that they didn’t want you back. But it was too late to back out.

“Are you ready?”, Creeper asked you, rubbing your back tenderly.

As you didn’t have a car, Neron had offered to drive you to Charming. He was wearing a jacket over his kutt because it wasn’t a good idea for a Mayan to be seen in SOA’s territory without giving them a call first. For this reason, he had stopped his bike a few blocks from the Teller-Morrow workshop.

“I am”, you answered. “Thanks for taking me here. And for everything else.”

“It’s been my pleasure.”

The reality was that you were going to miss him, which wasn’t appropriate to say out loud or it could lead to misunderstandings.

“May we meet again”, you added instead. “And call if you ever need a hand. Even if it’s just to talk.”

“I’ll do”, he nodded. “The same goes for you, love.”

“Okay. I’ll do it too.”

Creeper was the kind of man who always looked after his people. And even though it was a goodbye for now, you already were one of his own.

With nothing more to say, you gave him a heart-felt hug which he did not hesitate to reciprocate. No words were necessary, so after a last smile, he took his bike and drove back to Santo Padre. Once you were alone, you took a deep breath and started walking down the street with a clear destination.

It was getting dark by the time you arrived at the TM, which was already close. However, their bikes were there, so you assumed they´ll be inside the clubhouse. Your heart beat so fast you thought it would explode. And for better or worse, one of the Sons had already seen you as he was sitting outside on the wooden table.

“Look at who we have here!”, Tig exclaimed. Both of you walked towards each other until he was able to welcome you with an embrace. “When have you come back? Come in, boys will love to see you.”

You didn’t have time to talk or even think again about whether this was a good idea or not because Tig guided you directly to the entrance. And his arm was still around your shoulders when you crossed the door, so you couldn’t run away.

“I have found a lost bunny outside, brothers”, was Tig’s way of announcing your return. And while you were telling him not to call you that, the rest of the boys came to give you a warm welcome.

For a few minutes, it was all hugs, questions about how you were doing, and sentences assuring you that they had missed you and were glad you were back. The situation changed when you caught Happy’s eyes on you. Even his brothers understood they should give you some space, so they went to the bar counter to take some beers. Only then, Happy slowly walked towards you, leaving half a metre between the two of you.

“Hey”, you said.

“Hey”, he responded.

Suddenly, you felt the atmosphere colder and a stronger stomach ache due to nerves. Anyway, nothing could change the excitement you were feeling for seeing him again.

“I’ve missed you.”

Happy tensed his jaw and, for a moment, you thought he was going to kick you out. Instead, he put one arm around your back to keep you close and rested his head on your shoulder regardless of the height difference between you. He wasn’t hugging you, it was more like he was looking for some kind of comfort from you. Like a child who has been hurt.

“Cut the bullshit you two and came with us to celebrate Y/N is back home”, Chibs said, which was enough for Happy to give you back your personal space.

“You just want an excuse to get drunk”, you responded while following Happy’s steps to the bar counter.

“Don’t see the problem in there, love”, he added.

A few hours went by while you were drinking and catching up. They told you some anecdotes from these days that you missed out on, and you answered their questions and told them some things about Santo Padre, the city and his people. You tried not to mention Creeper’s name just in case as you focused on telling them more amusing stories. One of the few times you mentioned Mayans was to make fun of the fact that they thought at first you might be some kind of spy.

With the intention of breath some fresh air after the heat you had experienced in Santo Padre, you went outside to smoke a cigarette. However, the person who decided to join you at the wooden table kind of surprised you.

“Tired already?”, Chibs asked you while lighting his own cigarette.

“A little bit”, you responded. “It’s been a long day.”

“Will you go home?”

“Where else?”

“Just asking”, he added, shrugging his shoulders.

“I know you have noticed that something’s going on between Happy and me”, you said. “He has barely spoken to me. That makes it pretty obvious.”

“He has barely spoken, but he didn’t take his eyes off you for a single moment”, Chibs pointed out.

“Yeah, I know.”

He took a long drag on his cigarette and slowly released the smoke before continuing to speak:

“When you left, he lost his head, Y/N. He banged all the croweaters he could at first and started drinking more than usual.”

It wasn’t nice to hear the great number of chicks in which Happy had had his dick in, but you couldn’t reproach him for anything. Not after what you had done with Creeper adding the fact that you weren’t exclusive at all.

“But then everything got weirder”, he continued. “He pushed away every single hoe that tried to get into his pants. And he was in a bad mood most of the time. I mean, more than usual. He also started sleeping in the clubhouse some nights, alone, as if he didn’t want to go home.”

“What the fuck does it all mean?”, you asked him, slightly confused. After Chibs words, there were so many conjectures in your head that you needed someone to confirm or deny them.

“What the hell should I know? I’m not in his damn head, Y/N”, he answered back. “But I’m not blind or stupid. I understand why you left as well as I know how much Happy cares about you. So, put your shit together.”

“You are so rude, Pres, but I get your point.”

Chibs smirked and shook his head.

“I just want what’s best for y’all.”, he assured you before the door opening caught your attention. “I think is my time to go back inside.”

As Chibs walked towards the door, Happy walked towards you, so their paths crossed. You saw Chibs muttering something to Happy, but you couldn’t make out what it was. Moments later, it was just Happy and you out there looking at each other.

“I’m gonna go home”, he announced. “Wanna come?”

“Yeah, I’d like that.”

Happy just nodded in response, so you made your way to his bike. After he sat down on it, he offered his helmet to you.

“Thanks”, you muttered before taking a seat behind him. You had been away from him for so long that even this small distance made you nervous. In any case, you hugged him on the back, as you always did.

Your journey home was shorter than you expected. This could be because you would have liked to have more time before arriving at your destination, where you would have no excuse not to talk.

“I’ve never felt this way at home before”, you said due to both of you were in the middle of the living room looking at each other but without saying a single word.

“How?”

“Awkward.”

“Want to go?”, he asked you.

“No.”

“Want me to go?”

“No, of course not”, you assured him.

“So, what do you want?”

“Don't know. Talk, maybe?”, you suggested, slightly ironically.

“You should talk. You were the one who left.”

“But I left because you didn’t…”, you didn’t finish the sentence, but Happy frowned anyway.

“Because what?”, he growled.

It was time. If he wanted you to talk, you would tell him the raw truth.

“I left because I was hurt. Because seeing you banging randoms chicks under my nose was hurting me”, you said loud and clear. “I love you so fucking much that it hurts, Happy. But you have to tell me. You have to tell me that you don’t feel the same so I can move on.”

Your eyes were watery, but you didn’t shed a single tear. You have practiced this conversation in your head too many times and now you had to keep your composure. Crying would make nothing better.

“So, that’s why you’re here”, Happy pointed out. “You want to hear what you want and leave again.”

“It would be the most reasonable. But I want to move on, not to leave you.”, you acknowledged. “What I have realised is that being away from you is even more painful, Happy. And I would rather have a little of you than none at all, but I can’t keep waiting for something from you that will never come.”

After you stopped talking, Happy remained silent for a few minutes. You were thinking that he might be looking for the right words to reject you when he took something out of his kutt pocket and gave it to you. Frowning, you unfolded the folio to find something that made you frown even more.

“What’s this?”

“A hotel. Halfway between Santo Padre and Charming”, he briefly explained to you. “I booked a room. For us.”

“What? Why?”

“I told you. I thought the trip would be good for you. That some time alone would be good for us”, he added. “I didn’t expect you to stay at Santo Padre.”

“I had no fucking idea, Happy. How was I supposed to know? Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You took your decision. I didn’t have to make up your mind for you.”

You were wordless. Of all the things you thought could happen, this wasn’t one of them. And for once in a long time, it was his turn to speak his truth.

“I’ve never had an Old Lady or any of that bullshit. I thought I'd never want it, but you are so fucking annoying”, he said, pretty mad. “You hurt me too abandoning me, but still all I could think was that I wish you were safe. And this house was so fucking lonely it sucked. So, I’m sorry if this’s not what you wanted to hear, but I fucking love you, Y/N. Call it how you want, I don’t care, but just don’t leave me again.”

Two tears had run down your cheeks at his confession. You had to take a deep breath before you could walk towards him, feeling your whole body shaking.

“I know I was wrong. It was wrong to try to push you away. To try to convince myself that it wasn’t something more”, he continued even though you were now inches away from him. “But I have no fucking idea what I’m doing. This is not like anything I’ve ever done before.”

You brought your hands to his face, gently cupping it as you gave him a soft smile.

“I’ve never thought I'd say that, but for once, stop talking, Happy.”

Happy pursed his lips, completely serious, and waited not knowing what for. Your heart ached again, but this time the reason was different. You left because you weren’t on the same page, when in fact you were.

“I didn’t have a fucking clue when I left Tacoma to come to Charming with you either. The only thing I did know was that I wanted to be with you”, you assured him. “That’s all that mattered then and that’s all that matter now.”

As soon as you finished the sentence, you kissed him, as you had wanted to do since you first saw him in the clubhouse. And when he felt your lips on his, he put his arms around you to reduce the distance between your bodies. The passion with which you kissed each other was high, but you both needed more.

You slipped your hands under his shirt and Happy quickly gave you a hand to get rid of his kutt and shirt. When you felt his warm skin under the palms of your hands, you bit his lower lip with desire.

“I’ve missed this so much”, you muttered, but the sound of your shirt being torn confused you for just a few seconds. “You had no need to do that!”

But all you could see was his mischievous smile.

“I do needed it. I’ve missed you too.”

From that moment onwards, you could no longer contain yourselves. Your clothes were scattered on the living room floor, and your lips would be swollen from so much passionate kissing. You had left wet kisses and bites all around Happy’s neck and his fingertips would probably be marked on your skin by then. You didn’t even waste time on going to a bedroom or, at least, to the sofa. Instead, Happy cornered you against the nearest wall and wrapped one of your legs around his waist. When he couldn’t wait any longer, he plunged himself down inside you and stayed like that for a few seconds.

“Shit. I’ve missed you so fucking much”, he panted.

As his movements became wilder, the only thing you could do was sink your nails in his back and his shoulders, moaning like you wanted the whole world to hear you. Happy knew everything about your body, but your body also reacted differently to him than to anyone else. Everything was better with him. And it wasn’t just your body, it was your mind and your heart too. Every single part of you was in sync with Happy. And in some moment, the three words you had never said before during sex escaped from your mouth.

“I love you.”

You had said those words to him many times. For instance, every time he went on a mission, because you cared so much about him and wanted him to be safe, but you’ve never said that when you were hooking up. It would have been out of place. But now, in that moment, those words meant all the things you couldn’t express any other way.

“Again. Say it again”, he growled.

“I love you. I love you so fucking much”, you repeated as it was a mantra while his thrusts got harder. “I love you more than my life. More than everything. And I’ll love you forever.”

With those words sounding close to his ear, accompanied by your moans, and burying his head on you neck, Happy got his release. You could tell by the way his muscles tensed and his fingers sank into your thigh and hip.

“Fuck. You’re gonna be the death of me.”

“It would be a sweet death at least”, you responded. “But now I really need to sit down. My legs are shaking so badly I don’t know if I’ll be able to stand on my own when you let me go.”

You went straight to the sofa and didn’t do a single thing except catch your breath. The only thing Happy moved from the sofa for was to get the packet of cigarettes out of his trouser pocket. And as he lit his, he did the same with yours.

“It’s been quicker than usual”, you pointed out.

“Fuck you. It’s been a while”, he defended himself. “Besides, I've all night to fuck you until you beg me to stop.”

“Sounds tempting”, you nodded while biting you lower lip. “But I'd like some timeout. Do you want a beer?”

“Please.”

You spent some time talking calmly about the last few weeks you had been apart. You spoke of trivial things, but also of cloying ones, such as the times when you had been on the verge of calling the other to talk for at least a few minutes. You had to mention that you had spent a few nights with one of the Mayans from Santo Padre, but without explicitly saying that you had been fucking. However, Happy wasn’t the right person to blame you for anything either. Instead, you told him that Creeper had helped you find a decent room in a considerably better motel, and that he had given you a couple of recommendations for nice places to go and places to avoid. After the talk, you went to Happy’s room this time, and once there you took your time to give each other a few more orgasms. Maybe with that pace you could make up for the lost weeks. Having finished such and intense and exhausting activity, you could easily have fallen asleep if it wasn’t for the fact that, odd as it may seem, Happy still wanted to talk.

“You know how this life is. The danger. Why do you still want to be with me?”

“During the years, I've learnt to understand your life. What the kutt means and everything that it involves”, you responded. “Dangerous or not, it’s your life. You chose it and I respect it. And I love your brothers. They are my family now too.”

“But I’m gonna die, Y/N. Someday. For my club”, he added.

“You don’t know that for sure.”

“It’s a possibility.”

“So, I could die too someday. You know that what I do to earn money isn’t safe either.”

“You won’t die as long as I’m here.”

“Maybe. But what if we die? Everybody dies. And I prefer to spend the time we have together. No matter what.”

“Sounds good”, he acknowledged. Anyway, he still had doubts. “But I’m fucked up. You can’t deny it.”

“Of course you are. You are as fucked up as I am.”

“It’s not the same.”

“I don’t give a shit about what differences you see”, you answered back. “I may be one of the people that knows you better, the good and the bad. And I still love you. You’ve never scared me. I see you, Happy, and I still love you with all my heart.”

“Thanks”, he muttered. “For loving me despite everything I am and everything I do.”

“Cut the bullshit”, you growled while hitting him with the right amount of force in the ribs. “You are talking like a crybaby.”

“Sorry”, he answered, this time with a slight smile on his face. “I just don’t want you to regret it.”

“I won’t. I promise.”

“Okey. Fine.”

Happy stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray on his bedside table and made himself comfortable on the bed, pulling you towards him so that your head rested on his chest.

“So, are you gonna be here, right?”, he asked you in a soft voice while his hand caressed your still naked body. “Tomorrow morning, I mean.”

“Yeah, I’ll be here”, you responded tenderly. “Tomorrow morning and every other morning. I’m not going anywhere anymore.”

“Sounds good.”

“Sounds perfect”, you pointed out.

The System Has It's Ways - Juice Ortiz

Words: 1,087 Summary: Juice left someone behind in Queens, his mom.

Juice turned away from where the rest of his brothers were standing, voice lower as he tries not to be overheard. “No, momma, I’m doing okay. I’m getting my hours and three meals a day, promise.” “Juan Carlos,” she starts, seeing through him perfectly and he cuts her off. “Look, I’ll call you later, alright? I love you.” She sighs, “love you too.” The words are begrudging, but they make him smile. It was still surreal even after a decade to have someone who cared if he was sleeping and eating enough.

“Girlfriend we don’t know about Juicy?” Tig asks, when he turns back around, eyebrows wiggling and a twisted smile on his face. “Or some poor girl who has to answer when you call her mommy.” His grossed out face at his first sentence, changes to shock. “I don’t have a mommy kink.” For once he’s thankful that his words don’t come out in a splutter. “So you’re just calling some random girl mom?” It’s Jax that speaks, which makes him want to pout, because Tig he got. Tig loved to tease him and give him shit. He was pretty sure it got the guy going sometimes. “No.” The word is firm, probably the most firm he’s ever said anything.

He lets out a sigh, avoiding the eyes of Chibs, who seems to be laser focused on him. “After my mom died, I was in the system. I bounced around for a couple of years, before I got put in this weird home.” He smiles. “It was the home of this girl who was just a little over ten years older than me. She was the youngest foster parent I had ever seen and I pushed her to what would’ve been the breaking point for any other foster parent, but she kept me. I was fourteen. She even tried adopting me before I became legal, but the state refused. She’s the only mom I’ve ever really had.” “Shit.” Tig says, unsure of what exactly to say, and it’s clear that Jax doesn’t know either, but Chibs somehow does. “I’m glad you had her, Juice. You need someone in your corner.” Juice can’t help but look at the man that’s pretty much become a father to him, with wide eyes, the silent really clear in them and the older man nods.

In the days that follow he expects some teasing to ensue. He put himself pretty firmly in the momma’s boy camp, but nothing happens and it makes him worry. The last thing he wanted was pity from his brothers due to his rather rough upbringing. It’s Chibs that he brings it up too, stopping the man before he climbs onto his bike to go home for the day.

“No one’s given me shit about my mom.” He’s quiet, unsure how exactly to ask the older man if they were pitying him and he’s thankful that he doesn’t have to. Chib realizing what exactly this is about. His hands comes up and rests on the back of Juice’s neck, the weight reassuring. “No one’s pitying you, if that’s what you were thinking. We were worried about you before. So quiet about your past, we’re just glad you’ve got someone in your corner.” Tears are building, but he refuses to let them fall. “Thanks Chibs.”

A few months later, as his twenty-fifth birthday is only a few days away, his mom goes silent.At first he thinks nothing of it. Sometimes she gets so involved with her work that she doesn’t hear her phone, but then an hour passes. And then it’s lunch time in New York and she hasn’t sent her usual text saying good morning.

It has him on edge. Since leaving Queens and finally settling in Charming, his mom was constantly contacting him. Texts good morning and good night, little anecdotes, or things she thinks he might like. A phone call a day, which was probably excessive to some, he knew that a majority if not all the other guys in the club would think it was too much, but he needed those reminders that she was thinking of him and was still proud to be his mom.

When more hours pass and it’s lunch time for him, he forces the new prospect, Half-Sack, to call all the hospitals in Queens, having him ask if she had been admitted. Every single one turns up empty and he doesn’t know what to do. They didn’t have any charters in New York or near. He had no one he could call in New York to check on his mom, and going himself would be a death sentence.

It’s as he is trying to talk himself out of sending someone to New York, maybe Happy? He had enough money to supply the trip and he could think of a hit he could give the other man as a reason to go, when Chibs shows up.

“What’s going on with him?” The heavy accent brings Juice out of his head. “Hasn’t heard from his mom all day. He had Half-Sack call all the hospitals, no one with her name and matching her description.” Jax tells the older man. “Shite.” He curses. “What do you think?” “I don’t know. We got two different things to worry about, is this maybe because of the club or from what sent Juice running from Queens?” “You really think it could be club business?” Juice interrupts before Jax can’t reply. “It can’t be club business. Her name and mine aren’t attached in any way. Records for minors are sealed normally, but I got rid of mine shortly after I left. There’s no trail connecting us.” “And why you left?” “They’ve waited a long time then.”

Juice’s phone ringing distracts him from seeing the look that Chibs and Jax exchange.

“Hello.” “Juice,” A sigh of relief leaves him at the familiar voice. “Momma, I was worried sick. What number are you calling me from?” “I’m sorry, I lost my phone. I’m using a payphone.” “But you’re okay?” “I’m okay, just a little stuck.” “What happened?” “I didn’t realize that Charming didn’t have any places to stay. You still have a guest room, right?” “What?” She chuckles, “You didn’t think I was missing another one of your birthdays did you?” He ignores that, focusing on her previous words. “You here? In Charming?” He doesn’t even wait for her to answer. “Where exactly are you? I’ll come get you.” “I’m right behind you, baby. Right behind you.”

Note

I know there's some possibly apocryphal anecdote about him having a back injury before filming (which caused a minor delay from Nov to Dec), since I hear that go around but haven't found a hard source on that being why part III was behind schedule at the start. Either way, corticosteroids like prednisone can also be used to treat poison oak inflammation, but can also lead to general weight gain and puffiness.

Aww, poor Ralphie! People often rag on him for being out of shape/not as well prepared as Sean Kanan or TIG, but who can blame him if he was suffering from poison oak and a back injury and bad attitude lol. Plus I think TIG was an actual karateka?

But Ralph's performance in TKK3 is still one of my fave versions of Daniel because he's so cute and full of manic energy!

GOSH! I checked & my last anon wasn't sent :( But well, I'm here! This weekend was calm, perhaps bc i wasn't at home lol. I'm writing your gift, I want to finish it today, so tomorrow i can be full with xmas stuff in home. Can't wait to post your gift & reveal my identity! Really you're a very nice person :3 how was your weekend? I loved that anecdote of making cookies w your nieces/nephews! -TIG

This weekend was great! My siblings and their families came up and we had dinner and opened gifts. I got an upgrade this year and actually got to sit at the adult table instead of the bar with the kids. We all had a lot of good laughs and smiles. I got to play my piano for the first time in at least a year which felt amazing. One of my nieces asked me to play so I figured out a short piece and it felt like I had gone back home to my roots. I was trained in classical piano for about 15 years and so being able to play something again just felt so natural, even if I had to have a few extended pauses as I figured out notes😅. hi jaz! do you have any feel-good movies you like to watch when you're feeling kinda down? i usually look through your blog to feel better... and you've got good taste, so. thank you for everything!

disclaimer: i have not and never have been a movie person. if i need a quick pick-me-up i’m more likely to go back to a favorite episode of a series (favorites include the first taz live show, the first couple episodes of gravity falls, and the minneapolis mbmbam live show). and secondly, just because of who i am, a lot of the things i watch when i’m sad tend to be the kinds of things that cause catharsis-crying (queer eye, gotg2) so like... be warned that these might not be the Happiest

but! as for my movie list!

ocean’s 11 (2001). you like vegas? you like flashy editing and jazzy scores with weird basslines? you like movies where you have to Pay Attention to understand what’s going on? you’ll like this. (it is from 2001 so it’s like... mostly white dudes, and not great on the gender equality front, but no movie is perfect)

for similar reasons i’d recommend logan lucky, which has the same director/score, but it does have the catch that it’s from 2017 so the total lack of poc is a little more brow-raising this time around. but a good chunk of the movie is adam driver, channing tatum, and daniel craig trying to rob a nascar vault and it’s just... so good

thor ragnarok. the colors! the pizazz! the drama of it all!

netflix standup specials! my personal favorites are the newest john mulaney special, the chelsea peretti special, and the tig notaro special, but netflix has a TON and most of them are solid

if you want a catharsis-crying standup special, mike birbiglia’s “my girlfriend’s boyfriend” made me cry. it’s the story of a fight with his girlfriend peppered with flashback anecdotes, and it’s a straight white guy special so bits of it are a little ehhhhhh, but the ending of it was so unexpectedly sweet it caught me off guard

pacific rim, because it’s a movie about how love conquers all, including and up to giant lizard monsters

disney! when in doubt disney (or similar 2000s animation) cheers me up. this does tend to fall in the catharsis-crying category

in general, if my tastes don’t line up with yours, i would just recommend picking a couple favorites. do you really like romcoms? who’s your favorite romcom actor? watch a couple things with them! do you really like this one? great! use that for bad days.

and lastly, if you ever want to watch anything i recommend but aren’t in the us/don’t have netflix/are easily confused by streaming sites (like me), use justwatch to see where you can watch things. it is a lifesaver.

“That’s not the truth, Ellen”: How Dakota Johnson won her birthday feud against Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres said Dakota Johnson didn’t invite her to her birthday. This was a big mistake.

On Wednesday, November 27, as most Americans prepared to celebrate Thanksgiving, a time when we are supposed to reflect on the blessings in our lives, actress Dakota Johnson was waging a thrilling and terrifying war on the battlefield known as the Ellen show.

“Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen,” said the star known for anchoring the 50 Shades of Grey movie franchise and for being the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. “Ask everybody. Ask Jonathan, your producer.”

The truth in question was whether Johnson — who also played a witch who tears apart evil women, muscle from bone, in 2018’s Suspiria remake — had invited DeGeneres to her 30th birthday party in October. DeGeneres had opened her interview with Johnson by wishing Johnson a happy belated birthday and asserting that Johnson had not invited her,

Johnson insisted that she had, and called for witnesses, while DeGeneres denied the accusation.

Finally, off-camera, someone affiliated with the show confirmed that Johnson was right. DeGeneres had been out of town and couldn’t be there, said a woman wearing a headset.

“Why didn’t I go?” DeGeneres asked out loud, admitting defeat and joking. “Oh yeah I had that thing. [The party] was probably in Malibu, that’s too far for me to go to.”

The party, according to E Online, was indeed in Malibu, on October 5 (Johnson’s birthday is October 4). It was attended by a celebrity flock that included the likes of Miley Cyrus, Coldplay frontman (and Johnson’s boyfriend) Chris Martin, Goop empress Gwyneth Paltrow, and comedian Tig Notaro.

DeGeneres’s whereabouts on October 5 are not publicly known, but she was spotted in Texas the next day, sitting beside George W. Bush at a Dallas Cowboys game. The October 6 appearance caused an online backlash because of DeGeneres’s apparent willingness to be friendly with a former president whose administration supported anti-LGBTQ policies (DeGeneres is gay) and failed to act in the face of Hurricane Katrina (DeGeneres was born in Louisiana).

To be clear, Johnson didn’t bring up DeGeneres’s “thing” in Texas. She simply stated that DeGeneres wasn’t telling the truth about not being invited, and was bolstered by someone who works on the Ellen show. She clearly caught DeGeneres in a lie, and for many, the resulting awkwardness was darkly satisfying to watch.

But Johnson’s call-out cuts deeper in the context of DeGeneres’s recent struggles to maintain her image of being one of the nicest people in Hollywood. DeGeneres built her entire brand of comedy around being a beacon of wholesomeness and niceness in an industry often roiled by gossip and tabloids. And she did so while being an LGBTQ pioneer at a time when it was rare for LGBTQ celebrities to be publicly out.

Today, millions of people tune in for each episode of her wholesome daytime talk show. But as 2019 has worn on, many people have started to doubt DeGeneres’s nice, wholesome image, and some have suggested she’s not as good or as nice as we’ve been led to believe. In that context, a fight about a birthday invite isn’t about a birthday invite at all but about the power of celebrity image and what happens when that image becomes tainted.

This isn’t the first time Dakota Johnson had an awkward interview with Ellen DeGeneres

Johnson’s prickly interview with DeGeneres is actually an uncomfortable mirror of her 2018 appearance on the Ellen show, which she visited while promoting her movies Suspiria and Bad Times at the El Royale. When DeGeneres introduced Johnson, she made snarky jokes about the length of Johnson’s skirt:

“Did you try that on before — do you want a blanket or anything?” DeGeneres asked, before trying to cover up Johnson’s legs with an index card and then a series of tissues. DeGeneres then segued the conversation into pregnancy rumors surrounding Johnson’s relationship with Martin.

“That is a mighty tight outfit for someone’s who’s pregnant,” DeGeneres said.

The joke flopped. A disembodied groan wafts through from the audience. Johnson played it off. “They don’t even know what you’re talking about,” Johnson said, suggesting the studio audience hadn’t heard any rumors at all. “The only thing I’m pregnant with is good ideas. Not any babies.”

Then the conversation shifted to birthdays, and how DeGeneres wasn’t invited to Johnson’s 29th. Apparently the pregnancy rumors had arisen in the press after a quasi surprise birthday party for Johnson that DeGeneres wasn’t invited to. DeGeneres told Johnson she was offended because Johnson had been invited (through her boyfriend Martin) to DeGeneres’s own birthday party.

With DeGeneres having paid so much attention to Johnson’s birthday party invite list in 2018, it makes sense that Johnson would be on her toes when questioned about the same thing in 2019. That explains her defensiveness.

“Last year, on the show, you gave me a bunch of sh*t for not inviting you,” Johnson said.

The amount of time DeGeneres had previously paid to Johnson not inviting her to her 2018 birthday party — coupled with the 2019 invite that did materialize (according to Johnson and one of the Ellen show’s producers) and DeGeneres being caught in a lie about not being invited — helped energize the clip to go viral.

No doubt, there’s a certain wish-fulfillment aspect to this confrontation for people who aren’t Johnson but have encountered similar scenarios in which they’re unfairly painted as mean or misunderstood as an aggressor. Being able to call someone out on a lie and have people back you up, especially people who are friends with the liar, is satisfying. As is living vicariously and watching someone called out on it.

The virality is also largely dependent on the circumstances of Ellen DeGeneres being Ellen DeGeneres. It’s unlikely that anyone would have cared if DeGeneres really thought Malibu was too far to go for a birthday party. The real fuel for this social media blaze is that DeGeneres has always portrayed herself as the type of celebrity who would never lie about that kind of thing.

Johnson’s encounter with DeGeneres is the latest event to challenge her public persona as a genuinely “nice” person

For some viewers, Johnson’s confrontation with DeGeneres hit a rarified intersection of vindication and thrill. Most talk shows don’t stray very far from promotion, silly anecdotes, and trying to sell to the audience the idea that their guests are all normal, fun people whose movies, music, and television shows you should probably consume.

Ellen is a show that’s succeeded for 16 years and counting because Ellen DeGeneres herself is the pinnacle of nice. If she ever acts confrontational, it’s in a gentle and “in good fun” sense of the word. She is known for giving generous gifts to the average people she invites onto her show, and taking record-breaking selfies with famous friends. She’s widely recognizable as a nice woman with a nice talk show full of nice people.

But lately, there’s been a shift in that perception and a growing belief that DeGeneres’s niceness hardly deserves so much praise and respect. Anyone who has come into contact with real human beings knows that being as nice as DeGeneres is on television, 100 percent of the time, is a fantasy. DeGeneres herself knows it; she told the New York Times in a 2018 interview that one of her struggles was to overcome the nice image she created for herself.

Earlier this year, in a different display of that uncritical niceness, DeGeneres brought Kevin Hart on her show after he walked away from hosting the Oscars. Hart had stepped down after refusing to apologize for homophobic jokes. DeGeneres urged him to ignore “the haters,” and was subsequently criticized for dismissing the seriousness of Hart’s jokes.

As my colleague Constance Grady wrote for Vox in October, people seem to have grown tired of what Grady labeled DeGeneres’s “uncritical niceness”: the idea that we should be nice to everyone regardless of whether they’ve done bad things.

To her critics, DeGeneres’s uncritical niceness is a failure to hold friends and loved ones accountable.

Skipping Johnson’s party in Malibu — whether because it was simply “too far” or because she had other plans to go to Texas and hang out with George W. Bush — isn’t DeGeneres being nice to a fault, but rather a display of DeGeneres’s own priorities and personal leanings. We don’t know all the details, but in retrospect, it looks like DeGeneres chose to travel to Texas to spend time with someone many people find unsavory rather than attend someone’s birthday party across town that she, as she intimated on her show, clearly wanted to be invited to. And being nice to the wrong people raises the question of whether or not DeGeneres is actually a nice person at all.

Add to that, this entire scuffle with Johnson was an unforced error, with DeGeneres choosing to joke about and rib Johnson about not inviting her — painting Johnson as the kind of celebrity who’s too cool or not “nice” enough to invite Ellen DeGeneres to a fabulous party. With the facts revealed, Johnson vindicated, the awkwardness of DeGeneres caught up in a blunder of her own doing, and the rich detail of DeGeneres having missed the party while hanging out with George W. Bush, the clip gave DeGeneres’s critics an example of how phony her nice image might be:

Johnson, meanwhile, has possessed a narrative about her not putting up with trivialities.

Though the 50 Shades movies never found critical praise, Johnson is considered as the best thing about them. She also was also mordantly admired for having no chemistry whatsoever with and possibly despising her 50 Shades co-star Jamie Dornan. Johnson also famously called out DeGeneres’s fellow nice talk show cohort Jimmy Fallon in an interview once for not letting her speak and constantly talking over her.

Essentially, Johnson seems to not be afraid of anything and to not stand for bullshit.

Viewed through that lens, Johnson and DeGeneres’s uncomfortable conversation wasn’t just a viral talk show clip about a harmless mistake. It was Johnson telling the truth and DeGeneres getting caught in a lie.

So, to anyone who’s doubted whether Ellen DeGeneres is really that “nice,” it sure was satisfying.

Pete Buttigieg and the viral allure of the charming politician

Pete Buttigieg has a certain familiarity to him.

The South Bend mayor doesn't come across as just another politician. He doesn't pretentiously talk down to Americans. He doesn't maintain a rigid air of professionalism or keep his personal life and his interests to himself. Buttigieg instead makes every effort to be incredibly transparent, personable, and down-to-earth.

He is, quite frankly, an exceptionally charming guy. In the past few weeks, as he's gained popularity in his bid for the presidency in 2020, he's reminded many people of a certain former president: Barack Obama.

While the two men have different backgrounds, interests, and policies, they both leave people with a refreshing sense of hopefulness, an invigorating sort of energy.

Like Obama, Buttigieg comes across as an intelligent, capable, and passionate leader. But at the same time, he gives the impression that he'd make an absolutely superb best friend. The perfect balance between personal and professional is often incredibly difficult to strike — especially when a position as serious as president is on the horizon — but it's one both Obama and Buttigieg seem to have nailed very early on.

On Friday, Buttigieg visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show and sat down with one of America's favorite talk show hosts to discuss everything from his candidacy announcement to Vice President Mike Pence's feelings about the LGBTQ community. Buttigieg covered a lot of ground during the interview, but one clip from the show perfectly captures his ability to transition from lighthearted jokester to impassioned activist ready to stand up for his beliefs.

In less than two minutes, Buttigieg poked fun at the pronunciation of his last name, joked about wanting an invite to Tig Notaro's show, and addressed Mike Pence's anti-LGBTQ stance, saying, "I'm not critical of his faith, I'm critical of bad policies. I don't have a problem with religion, I'm religious too. I have a problem with religion being used as a justification to harm people, especially in the LGBTQ community..."

He spoke casually but remained firm. He went on to delve into a deeper conversation about religion and his own faith. He even addressed people's desire for a woman president and gender diversity and balance — all while maintaining his calm, cool, and collected temperament.

I watched Buttigieg on Ellen. He made me feel he’s the real thing. Not only how he dealt with Pence, but religion itself and it’s place in politics. He and Obama aren’t really alike, but I get the same feeling of excitement, of being a better person and a better people with him.

We already know Buttigieg is an Afghanistan war veteran, a married, openly gay man, a lover of dogs and Harry Potter. He's a Hufflepuff who handles himself well on Twitter, which, as we know from thousands of unhinged tweets Trump has sent since taking office, is a very important skill in a potential candidate. And his husband Chasten is a star on his own, tweeting everything from corny jokes, personal photos of the family, and even his expert advice for heartbreak. (Ice cream.)

As we've learned from Obama, and even more recently the viral hype surrounding Beto O'Rourke and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, there's something so uniting about a politician engaging in candid, personalized discussions and sharing their unfiltered selves on social media. Knowing a political figure is comfortable enough to let their guard down when they're not debating competitors or arguing about policy is reassuring.

Knowing Obama's favorite books and music and seeing him crack jokes, speak casually, and display public affection for Michelle gave people a fuller picture of the man that was running our country. And it allowed for a deeper level of trust to be established. There's, of course, so much more that factors into choosing a presidential candidate to vote for, but these little personable anecdotes and extras certainly go a long way.

By opening up about his sexuality, his religion, his personal life, love, and more, Buttigieg seems to be following the same path as Obama. He knows how to carry himself, how to appropriately stay true to his beliefs in a public setting, and how to joke without coming across as unprofessional.

And since Obama left the White House I believe those are qualities many Americans have missed in their leader.
