Campaign Starter: Tales from the Bonecart
Whether it's due to superstition or a distaste for a toilsome and muddy trade, folk tend to pay little attention to gravediggers. This makes for an awfully convenient cover for your travelling troupe of tombrobbers as they tour around the realm's backroads filling their pockets with mementos purloined from the dead.
Planning adventures for "evil" campaigns can be tough, but sometimes you and your players just want an excuse to get your hands dirty. What better opportunity to get DEEP down in the dirt than to hand out shovels and have them start out as a group of travelling undertakers/thieves?
Setup: A handful of crews have run the bonecart scam over the past several generations, tempering their skullduggerous actions with a bit of honest gravemaking. This dichotomy is no better represented in the current heads of the operation: Dour and hardworking Heliana, who minds the cart's reigns and keeps the crew on track, and the knavish academic Benjamin Eelpot who loves delving into things that should best stay buried. These two have taken the party on for a series of jobs that will likely require a cold heart and a strong stomach, stealing from both the living and the dead and hoping not to get caught in the meantime.
Adventure Hooks:
The party's first outing on the bonecart should be a meat-and-potatoes sort of job, used to set the tone of the campaign, which happens to sound like "Someone old and rich and lonely has died, leaving their house haunted and their valuables unguarded".
While being stewards of the dead is a great cover, it sometimes attracts the wrong sort of attention, such as when a nobleman offers the party a great reward to investigate an abandoned necropolis and the source of the terrifying dreams that haunt him. Gold is gold though, and surely this couldn't have too many long reaching complications for them.
Irony of ironies, Shortly after one of their scores the party is setupon by a group of bandits disguised as dead men, who manage to make off with a good portion of their illgotten gain. There's no way to recover their goods through official channels, so they'll have to do it themselves.
Throughout their early adventures the party will need to avoid the attention of the heavy handed sheriff hired by the local nobility to quietly and brutally dispose of criminals like themselves.
You get a lot of weird jobs being a gravedigger, but "limo service" is not usually one of them. Still, money is money, and when a bloodsoaked countess offers to pay the bonecart well to defend and transport her coffin across the lands so she can attend a gathering of the great and the ghoulish who are they to say no?
Heliana will eventually approach the party once they've gotten enough shared time , experience, and nightmarish close calls under their belts. She's got some personal matters to attend to, which involve a list of names belonging to an old secret society and a series of graves across the countryside that may contain clues to the locations of some great treasure. Its a bolder job then the crew usually pulls, and will draw unwanted attention, but they can rely on eachother to pull through, right?

Ok I think history is fascinating but I'm dumb and don't know much so please infodump me about anything you want
ur great you know that?
In the Miocene era, there were these huge ass predator birds. They were called Kelenkens.
Tumblr media
It's skull was around the size of a horse's, making it the largest skull in like, the entirety of bird history. They were flightless birds, which is obvious they are wayy to big to fly at all.
right turn, hold on!
Have you ever heard of Ötzi the iceman? Cos he's pretty interesting!
Basically, he was found frozen in some canyon; mummified and almost perfectly preserved. They could even see the contents of his stomach, and knew his last meal. He's one of the oldest mummies in the world, about 5,000 years old. He's older than the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge. It's been awhile since I read the article, but I'm pretty sure he died from injuries/blood loss/dehydration in the canyon, and then a moving iceberg came along and preserved his body.
Ooh! OOh! Ancient Egypt!
I've been obsessed with Ancent Egypt since I was a kid but I've been learning some new things from a podcast so heres an Ancient Egypt trivia:
The first Pharoah of Egypt's name meant 'angry catfish'
Horus is gay (He fucked Seth at one point)
Seth once tricked Osiris into a coffin, sent him down a river, then cut him up and scattered his body over Egypt. He had a bit of a vendetta.
The Egyptians considered their Pharoah to be a God.
The Pyramids weren't built by slaves.
Pharaohs built pyramids so people would always rememeber and worship them (peek the god thing) but tombrobbers were relentless dicks so they moved to hidden tombs in the Valley of Kings and used a huge temple out.. somewhere (i forget where) so ppl could go their and worship them. I think Cleopatra's name is on there somewhere.

Finding out ancient tombrobbers used to avoid breaking the seal on the tomb by just digging through the other end is. SO funny. Pharaoh says “hey can you check on that pyramid” and the loyal stooge sees that the door hasn’t been opened and says “All good here, boss.” Meanwhile a bunch of people have tunneled through the other side and broke a hole in the back wall and are already throwing gold in comically large sacks. Looney Tunes shit.

9 from salty asks. (Demon barker went home. Celebration.)
Glad the demon barker went home! Hope the headache isn’t too bad <3
9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?
Zorc, Akhenaden, Gozaburo. I could go off, I’m not going to go off, but I will go to extreme lengths to avoid including either of them in my fics and I’ll only read stuff involving them from like three or four authors I super trust and respect. Zorc especially hits too close to home for me, explained a tiny bit more later below the cut.
I have a very large project I’m working on that unfortunately Zorc’s kinda a key part of, and i’m excited for the project but i’m really not looking forward to getting into that head and trying to write him. Akhenaden has been difficult enough during my ygo big bang fic, and he doesn’t even have that prominent of a role. Not looking forward to writing Zorc, but the story payoff will be well-worth it (hopefully).
As for why I don’t like the characters, the reasons are a little bit the same for the first two: traumatizing TKB. Akhenaden chose to slaughter an entire village (minus one young thief boy) under the premise that they were tombrobbers and therefore were expendable/lesser lifes. Piss off. Zorc did all his bullshit in the Ring and used TKB’s pain and trauma for his own gain. It hits a little too close to home to past abuse experiences, so the character is not one I like interacting with/consuming media of.
As for Gozaburo, abusive father who put Kaiba and Mokuba through hell and back? Yeah drop dead and rot in hell. It’s as simple as that.

Reavers, and the darker aspect of the heart.
Reavers were always an old fiction of mine that I wanted to expand upon. They are essentially symbiotic creatures, living with the seed of an interdimensional being within them. With this connection, they are capable of drawing matter from this greater dimension and defying logic with it. A Reaver is born when they accept the seed. From that point, it will appear as those a dark corruption is beginning to spread through their body, at the point of infection. This is merely a byproduct of the symbiosis taking shape. It is painful, but not overly so. One might even find the pain to be cathartic. You see, only those with a heart mired in conflict are capable of bonding to the entity in the greater dimension. Those that have not seen death, who have not experienced the pain of loss, are not capable of being bonded with.  It is for this reason that most reavers are bandits, and tombrobbers. The seeds are usually found within pyramids, and the ravaged remains of ruins. They often appear out of nowhere, one day showing up, and another they are gone. The chances of anyone discovering the ruins are slim. Those that do however, find themselves in an almost alien atmosphere.  The ruins are created at the whims of the entity mentioned above, they are dreamed into existence with little thought resembling our own, with many features that defy comprehension. Those that stay within the boundaries find the world surrounding the ruins changing, as it moves about within the many worlds with life upon them. Even animals are capable of becoming reavers, so long as they are mired with the conflict inside that allows the bonding to take place. Once one has completely become bonded to the entity, the urge to protect the ruins becomes a persistent obsession. Many reavers leave the landscape of their pyramid littered with corpses, as a warning to those that would invade upon their territory. You see, a reaver is possessed with the ability to teleport at will, between and through dimensions. They are so skilled at this, that it defies all known magical abilities within the current universe. This, combined with the ability to channel and create matter, often into weapons grafted onto their body, allows them to dispatch any intruders with supreme ease. The symbiosis also provides an extreme change in their physiology, making them tough beyond reason. They are beyond their old species, becoming more aware, quicker, stronger, with seemingly no tradeoff beyond the change in power causing many to lose their mind to the endless violence that guarding the ruins tends to create. They are not invincible, however. There are societies that are aware of their existence, and they are tasked with destroying any new reavers at any cost. This is usually accomplished with a skilled team of temporal mages, manipulating time to trap the reaver, allowing them to dispatch the reaver with little issue, beyond the innate toughness of the being. These squads operate under the authority of the reigning Mage’s Guild, those aware of the threat that a veteran reaver could pose to the world. Not every reaver chooses the path of violence. Some find the changes inside with a new wisdom, their intelligence expanding to a new height in the wake of their transformation. They are the acolytes of the great scholar, the first reaver. He is beyond truly being a reaver, and is something more. Those under his tutelage assume the roles of advisor in many realms, the leaders of which unaware of their true capabilities. ------------------------------- More backstory will come later, should I remember. There’s plenty more to this world I’ve created that I need to write about, reavers being one of the major players within the world. The scholar in question is named Maugnus Rhoshok, and has a story of his own. Not a main character, just one that carries a great responsibility with the power that he wields.  The previous image I posted is artwork that I created of a reaver called The Hunter. He hunts other reavers to absorb their seed, along with the mass they’ve created, in order to expand his strength. His story will be further along. I have the details of them both, and I still find myself wondering where it will go. Yes, they are very powerful beings, but again they will not be the main focus of any series I create. They are merely some of the bigger fish in a world filled with conflict.
