hey sorry i’m sure it’s a little dumb but how did you find a community/make mutuals on here? i swapped from twitter to here last year & haven’t been able to make friends like i did on twitter ;v; sorry if this is all silly but figured it couldn’t hurt to ask. love your art & blog !!!

as i like to say, it's like lifting an anvil: it's very simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy. as someone who's a 12+ year veteran that lurked for a couple years and remade a little while ago, really it all comes down to putting yourself out there!!! don't just sit around twiddling your thumbs and lurking. it's tough to do it without coming off as a pandering tryhard, but honestly as long as you're polite, upbeat, and posting regularly, then you're golden.

if you want a big list of wordy bullet points, here's what i've got, and i think you'll find it's pretty applicable to basically any site/community you want to get involved in:

post a lot. this is number one with a fucking bullet! POST! POST LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. but crucially...

post GOOD STUFF. don't bash yourself in the caption/tags, don't say "sorry this is shit" or whatever, don't self-deprecate, and don't admit to posting low-effort stuff just to hit a quota. imagine it's open mic night and go crazy. this is a good site to use like a journal and a scrapbook, but if you want to actually get some traction, you need to bring something interesting to the table. of course, just being funny and nice goes a very long way.

encourage audience feedback. people LOVE to tell you about themselves and give their opinions. get them responding and make the questions and calls for engagement so interesting or fun they can't help themselves.

tag effectively. use both fandom/content tags for searches, and organizational tags for your visitors' use. the tagging system is tumblr's bread and butter, so make it work for you.

follow a lot of blogs you like. then see who they follow, and add those to the list. build a good circle of engagement and keep your finger on the pulse of the site culture for whatever niche(s) you're in... or want to get in.

reblog a lot and be funny/kind in the tags. generally leaving a lot of comments/replies to post is kind of hit-or-miss, but tags are a good harmless "inside voice" to use that doesn't clutter the post itself and yet still engages with op and people seeing the post

engage with people when they ask for engagement. things like polls, ask games, etc... scratch people's backs and they'll scratch yours. and it's just a nice thing to do regardless :)

panhandling is not always the best route. people will balk if you look desperate or openly beg for engagement, like directly asking people to reblog something or being passive-aggressive about how much engagement you are/aren't getting on something. a genuine joke about it is fun and relatable, but snarky comments just kill the vibe and scare people off.

REMEMBER THERE'S NO ALGORITHM. lurking will not put you or any of the stuff you like out there!! REBLOG POSTS! SEND ASKS! this site will NOT SPOON FEED YOU ANYTHING. like taming a wild stallion, you can make this work for you, but you have to put in the effort first.

some people will think you're annoying, and that's okay. probably not very many, but they'll be loud. this is an unavoidable part of Being Known. you can be the sweetest peach in the world but there'll still be people who just don't like peaches. don't take it to heart, and if you do happen to drop the ball or rub a few people the wrong way, don't let that keep you from trying again :)

i've enjoyed the many friends i've made on this site in the past decade-and-then-some, even though both this site and my blog are both something of a ship of theseus. here's hoping you can make it work for you and your interests, too!

Not sure if you want to answer this but it’s been bugging me. So Simone was at Bafta Afterparty yesterday evening, ofc she looked gorgeous and there are pics where she is clearly arriving with her boyfriend and then I saw people just casually joking that She was drunk and it made me so angry.

I have experience with friends who had an alcoholic problem so people, „fans“ casually assuming this about my fav is making me sad. No one knows anything about what she was doing and also none of the pictures look like she was drunk honestly. also it is always a particular group of subset of fans who are more Anthony/JB fans. And I know I just know if anything like this had been said about HIM they would have rioted. I am getting to annoyed by these so called Simone fans, no one calling them out. First they subtle bodyshame her, now they „joke“ about alcoholism.

Sorry i didnt know where to turn. I always see your takes and know you won’t laugh at me because others did.

I've said time and time again, my blog is a safe space for those who wish to make it so and I will never ever laugh at that. I am truly sorry this affected you and you have friends going through alcoholism. It's a very hard thing to watch someone you love go through that and I'm sympathise. If you ever want to talk about this more, my DMs are always open!

I definitely see how that personal experience and people making light of it with Simone makes you angry. It puts me off too especially if it's fake fans who always take a shot at Simone everytime she steps out.

I will admit that I saw some of the jokes made in jest kind of funny but now I apologise for being implicit in this. It was something that went along the lines of "She's just like me; Go to a party, look pretty, get some drinks and say bye." These jokes just felt relatable to me because I am a social drinker for my job (and I quite literally have to just be there and look pretty lmao) but I'm not a partier who stays out all night so I go home early too. However, I do see the more insidious side of the comments and that is ABSOLUTELY not okay.

You're definitely right, there is a double standard in this fandom. Not just with JB only stans who keep trying to make Jonny v Simone happen (it's not gonna happen!! They're besties stop comparing the two!) But her against most of her Bton castmates. I don't understand why they all dislike and discount Simone so much. It's so disheartening to see when I admire her so much and see alot of myself in her.

Honestly they just need to leave her the fuck alone but we know they won't. So the best we can do is take stock with our feelings on this, love and support her as much as we do and know that's enough and she sees our support!

I honestly don't get where they take their information from "majority end up detransing" or "regret it later". And even if true how can it ever be a justification to block care for all (especially adults!) when the evaluation and diagnosis process should be the thing to be improved on.

Let's put aside the hypocrisy with "normal" people getting cosmetic surgery or women who receive "unnecessary" surgeries for stuff that can be endured like atrocious menstrual pain. Aside of that directly infringing bodily autonomy these people are okay with "normal" cosmetic surgery but when it involves trans it's horrible and comparable with Mendlers Nazi experimentations (that btw in contrasts to popular opinion also involved experimenting on lgbt people). And then the argument it's all new, it's not! They (the Nazis) also got rid of all the books of Hirschfeld (who did research on transsexuality and "Sexualwissenschaft" ).

I'm no longer sad or scared I'm actually pissed and very annoyed by these stupid bigots violently imposing their ideals on others, hiding behind religions, traditions, "family values" or "save the poor kids" . As illustrated by this bad-faith video featuring an admission of receiving informed consent.

The worst part is that this exact way of thinking I'm describing here for myself is what they probably feel when making their arguments against us. I think I'm right and reasonable, they think the same about themselves. But which approach is more successful? This was always the difference (on so many topics!): People who are ready to be violent and deceiving pushing for their ideals and people who are trying to go for a dialog, compromising, trying not to be violent and appeal to the people to be accepting of their ideals. And this up and down between right and left is never ending, I know. I also know if the non-violent side becomes violent or even semi-violent it directly said "you're not better than them, cause you are using the same tactics" .

But maybe we all should. Not just with these fucked up laws in US, also with the protests in UK, the protests for labour rights, the ones for retirement age in France, the protests in Turkey, in Iran, in everywhere. It is so fucking apparent that these people don't want to be violent (of course some people always are) but the majority wants peaceful change. Protesting against people who do not play by the rules and make up laws on the whim cannot be reasoned with.

I'm really really sorry for this rant. You don't have to publish this if you don't want, I'm just really frustrated and mad.

I don't keep up with statistics because I don't believe there's an increase of detransitioning at all. It's been more than 5 years that I first started believing that, and even when the "great breakthrough" of detransitioner happened, there wasn't that many people at all. Most were reidentified, which is a normal processus upon questioning.

For the video, honestly it just gives me anti-vaxx vibes. They tie things that may or may not be related to medical transition, with no proof at all, except for like, two people. The one saying she feels pain everywhere sounds like she has fibromyalgia (not caused by medically transitioning), and in their website it's: "I have no breasts and suffer chronic pain from childhood and early adult testosterone use. Legal help can aid in getting my life back." There is nothing indicating that testosterone use could cause chronic pain in children or adults? So yeah, vaxx vibes. The other one with her singing career? You could link it to testosterone because of the changing of voice, but… You knew about that, like? I'm just so confused about people being like "yeah I read that this is what's gonna happen under meds" and then "oh no this happened under meds", bro? And let me tell you, I can rant a bit too, in psychiatric institutions they don't tell you what secondary effects happen with meds you take, and in general with psychiatrists, they don't tell you shit about secondary effects. I was the ONLY ONE in the clinic who was looking through each med to learn what it was doing because that shit has real heavy secondary effects, it's not candies, they have more side effects than testosterone ever had, and nobody talks about it. Bad personal experience aside, I can recognize that in some cases this is important to use them, though I do think that psychiatrists have a tendency to give them like candies and without talking seriously about side effects and shit. And psy meds are much more taken by "young adult and minors human females" than testosterone will ever be. Scott is a well known anti-trans trans guy who got a failed phalloplasty. So it's about an extreme minority of a minority, he got seven surgeries "to transition to male" and I suspect that most of them are in regards to his phalloplasty was a nightmare (btw nothing in the study he quotes sustain what he claims about HRT it's a bone density study so idk why that's there). Sure, again, surgery and especially phalloplasty is a complicated and uncertain surgery and I would personally not do it because of the potential costs, but he is 45 years old, he got all the tools to decide if that was the path he wanted to go through. He chose that as an adult, that's not related to kids transing.

The only one with some sort of a case is the one who was 16, transitioned and then regretted not having kids at 21, because I'm not sure we have sufficient data in regards to fertility with the use of testosterone, to assert that this is reversible. That said, fertility should not be the reason as to not treat someone too, so it's a debatable thing. I don't have any hard view on that, but so far there has not been proof that after stopping T you could be forever infertile (very tiny sample so take it with a grain of salt). However, you can freeze eggs now? So unless you got a full hysterectomy (which the one talking in the video probably did not go through, or she would have bragged about it to get more points about how kids are being butched up by the evil surgeons).

Their website looks like a scam. I am tempted to contact them to see how their process goes to be perfectly honest, maybe I will. And then there's the "Gender Mapping Project", claiming to have more than 700 gender clinics across the USA, that are all apparently completely overbooked? Not sure how they are doing their "Gender Mapping", because none of the methodology is explained anywhere (that would be too easy), and everything is kept secret because…? We don't really know why it is at all. But if you're looking for a gender clinic accross the world, there are some listed on it. They have also a very biased anti-porn view obviously. Now there are really alarming testimonies, and if they're true I am very against the way doctors are handling it (one says that she got told to watch youtube videos to learn how to do a T shot? And when asked for side effects, got asked if "he really wanted to do it or not", like this isn't how it's supposed to be at all, but also why look for testosterone if you don't know the side effects…?), but again, you could have the same exact kind of view in regards to psychiatrists. It's not specific towards gender clinics, it's specific to bad doctors, and overall a very vertical way of seeing patient/doctor relationships.

Anyway I agree with your rant 100%. However I know that violence has likely never really brought peace for a few years after, it was rather worse, and then maybe a little bit better… So idk what's really the right course for any of this.

Hi, I'm just starting out on posting Sims stuff on tumblr and I wanted to ask about the general etiquette? I guess? On posting Sims pictures. Like, I see people tagging the CC creators for some posts but not all of them. should I always tag the creator or ask if they want to be tagged? do I link to that specific CC or just to their page? what if I don't know the creator? I try and keep track but I have CC i downloaded from like. 2016 I think. and tagging on tumblr has always confused me, I've never really done more than reblogging things, do I just tag the posts with like "Sims 4" or???

I don't think there are any rules for posting sims pics really, it's not necessary to tag creators if you don't want to, unless it's a lookbook. Other people may want to get the same stuff and it just makes sense to put links to the used items (it's the point of a lookbook) and tag creators (this isn't a must but creators very often reblog lookbooks and edits with their content if they like them so you might want them to see your pics and give you some exposure). If it's like an edit or something else that's not specified as a lookbook, you may put in the info the used CC and tag creators, but only if you feel like it. Again, there are no strict rules or etiquette as you said for your simblr posts, do as you like to and as you are comfortable with.

Linking the used CC can actually save you from many wcif questions if you prefer to avoid them, I guess if you're very shy it may be important for you.

No need to ask a creator if they want to be tagged, most creators are thrilled to see their content being used in other people's games, and yes, you may tag creators even if you don't know them personally. 😅 If you're not sure, check their TOU or their blog, a lot of creators mention how they feel about tagging. Plus, even if a creator is annoyed by your tagging (which is very unlikely, but let's pretend) it's their choice just to ignore your post and that's it.

As for tagging posts, it's important to tag your posts according to their content. First of all it's just simply rude to tag your post like 'the sims 3' if it's not from this game or add 'ts4cc' tag to your post if it's not a download post (unless it's a lookbook with the links to the used cc, then it's fine BUT ONLY THEN). Then, if it's an edit you may add more specific tags like 'the sims 4 edit', 'ts4 edit', or if you post a legacy add some tags related to this theme. You may even develop your system of tags to organize everything within your blog. Like you have a specific tag for your edits only, you can put a link to it somewhere on your blog so others when visit your page could click on it and see your other works.

I'd say worry less about such things, just let your creativity flow and start posting, interact with other people, observe how they do things. Before I started posting anything on my own, this blog was also only for CC tracking, but I was lurking around and looked at how people do things around here.

How do you deal with receiving inappropriate anons/tags about your fave? I enjoy being a gif maker but this makes me want to quit

I don't blame you whatsoever, and I wish I had a better solution for you because I've just come to a place where I ignore it. water off a duck's back and all that. luckily, I tend to have always been rather good at just ignoring things I don't like. I wish I could tell you once you ignore them they go away but, they don't. they definitely don't harass you as much as if you were replying and giving them attention, but despite never answering some very inappropriate hangman related asks, I still get them from time to time. I just delete and move on, and try not to take it as a personal attack against me. but, I'm not saying it isn't, nor am I saying you're wrong for feeling that way. it's honestly annoying to have to deal with, especially if you have trouble ignoring all of that stuff. I had some practice before I got this blog when I ran a jeff goldblum fanblog because... man, some of the inappropriate asks that were sent to me there were... horrifying. and I'm a pretty open person and don't tend to judge, since I know I have some of my own things (not that I would ever go into someone's ask box and subject them to my kinks, but I'd like to think of myself as a good, respectful person so of course I don't) but... still.

I don't know. I always figure the thing they're trying to do is get a reaction - be it agreement from you or whatever, and the only way you can win against them is by refusing to give them that. obviously the best way to avoid anons is by turning off the anonymous ask option, but I always hate doing that because I know people who don't want attention may have questions or want to share something, or maybe they're just shy, and I want to keep my ask box open for them if they want to say something. inappropriate jerks be damned and all that.

as for things in the tags... it's just kind of the same thing, except you don't have the choice to just block tags like you can block anons if it comes to that point. I tend to know which of my faves get the most volume of inappropriate tags (and my god some of those tags...) so I just don't pay as much attention to their tags or just know going in that I'm going to see some PARCHED comments when I do.

I wish I had a better solution than "just ignore them" or "block them" or whatever, but... unfortunately I don't. I've always been lucky myself that most things can't bother me, but I totally understand that philosophy doesn't work for everyone and I'm sorry your experience of contributing to fandom, making content of your favorites, and enjoying yourself is instead being spoiled by people who can't keep their thoughts to themselves or with friends who they know are comfortable discussing those things.

Basic Training

This post has been sitting in my drafts for months now, during which I've come up with a few ways I wanted to write this post. This is what I've come up with.

Basic Training is the episode which made me hate Ben the most. The whole episode consisted him of being a stuck up brat only to be rewarded for it in the end.

This episode was the perfect opportunity to have Kevin in the spotlight and show how skilled and smart he is.

Gwen's presence in this episode was actually fine, there's no change needed for that.

Look, I know the shows named Ben 10 but we have seen Ben be the hero tons of times already.

And Ben being egoistic about his heroism is not something new in the franchise.

There have been episodes on the OS where Ben got a big head, yet I dont ever see anyone complaining about that.

Was is it because he was 10 that we excuse this behaviour? Nope.

15 - 16 is still pretty young and his attitude can be excused at this age as well.

My opinion? It was handled better in the OS.

There were times when Ben wasn't always the main focus.

In Lucky Girl, Ben has his ' who's your hero?' Moment.

They showed Gwen feeling jealous and hurt by the fact she wasn't noticed much.

It was realistic.

Then the epsiode proceeded to focus on Gwen , having Ben being kind of like a sub plot to the story.

Towards the end Ben compliments her.

So yeah Ben got big head, but at the same time they shifted focus so that the audience wouldn't find it annoying.

Gwen was in the spotlight for a bit, giving people a break from Ben.

Secondly , in Be Afraid Of The Dark, Ben again is shown to be slightly stuck up, but towards the end of that episode he learns and acknowledges Gwen and Grandpa for help and understands his crime fighting is more of a team effort.

In Galactic Enforcers, we are shown there are other heros besides Ben as well.

Ben wasn't the sole focus of that episode. Yes it was about him but also about the Galactic Enforcers.

I don't think he was shown to be over confident here , but it was nice to see some other heros in the scene.

The Ben 10,000 episode focuses on how Ben was too focused on his job and the lesson at that was Ben needed to relax and have them Galactic Enforcers take the lead instead.

Again , his attitude towards everything was brought in focus but towards the end he learnt something.

I recently started watching Generator Rex and I can't help but compare Rex's character to Ben's.

Rex is also proud , rushes into things and considers himself to be a hotshot. But they also show him being down ,having trouble with his nanites and actually voice out his insecurities.

He's still the hero, still has things go his way most times but it's not annoying like Ben.

( I've only seen like 7 episodes so far so I don't know if this going to go down hil or not but so far so good)

The issue with the sequels after the OS was that Ben was the focus a bit too much.

We as the audience were rarely ever given a break from him.

Other than a few conversations here and there about his attitude, nothing really was done about it.

Gwen should've been appreciated more for saving Kevin and Kevin should've been appreciated for stopping Aggregor.

But they weren't.

If it had been Ben , they would've made sure to show him getting some sort of recognition or trophy.

Back to the Basic Training episode.

We know he's the legendary Ben Tennyson, we know he's a hero. We didn't need another episode on it.

Instead the plot should've focused on Kevin. His skills, his abilities.

Ben would act the same but Magsiter Hulka should've put some sort of cover so Ben couldn't use the omnitrix.

Ben goes on breaking rules, and having a hard time being a hero without the watch.

Towards the end, it should've been Kevin who cracks the case and saves Hulka. Ben is mad he can't use the omnitrix but instead uses the guns and other weapons he's learnt to use at the academy

He's not amazing at them , but it makes him realise that he is hero , watch or not, something that has been emphasised in the show. Its not impossible for him to function without the watch.

Towards the end, Ben getting a 95 was a stretch. I'm sorry , but the guy wasn't great with using weapons and without the watch I dont think he would've been able to complete that hostage excercise.

I'm thinking more like 89%.

Gwen gets 98, that's fine and Kevin gets a 100.

Hulka comes in and awards the medal (?) to Kevin, suggesting he's becoming more like his father.

( im ignoring the ret con, plus the retcon I'm assuming wasnt thought off at this point by the writers)

Ben is shown to take one of the guns back to earth, because he thinks they're cool and he wants to practice and get better at them.

The whole hostage situation makes him want to get better at making strategies.

Yes he's good at improv, but he needs to learn to properly plan as well.

It doesn't matter if he's never shown to use the gun ever again, and he's back to relying on the omnitrix.

Or maybe some time down the line, he could use the weapon, even if it for a second, to show that he is improving and getting better.

Before you say 'he's already a hero, he doesn't need to learn anything ' sorry but no.

He's 16. He may have saved the world but he still has growing up to do. Different battles are going to arise all the time.

Saying he is perfect at 16 is dumb. Saying he's perfect when he's ben 10k , it'll make some sense. He's been around for a while and is pretty experienced.

The watch is a part of him, but seeing him try to explore other options would've been a fresher idea.

Another scene that made me mad was the court (?) scene in Vreedle, Vreedle.

Ben being a hero shouldn't make him above the law.

Domstol ruling in favor of Ben just because he's the legendry Ben Tennyson was stupid.

After Ben's little monologue , and destroying Domstols desk, the judge should've just informed him that being a hero does not excuse him from following the law.

Kevin could've had his little moment doing some negotiation ( would've been nice to see how he works as con artist) and Ben could've jumped in and helped while making some good points for the argument, showing us he's not stupid.

Then having Domstol rule in their favor would've made sense.

On the way back to earth there could've been a joke about how Ben watches Judge Judy too much which is where he learnt about trials and stuff. Or maybe Gwens dad taught him a thing or two at some point.

All this doesn't mess with Ben's character all that much, he's still the hero of the show, he still has his ego but it makes him more likeable, shifts focus from his attitude, and shows us he's pretty smart and is growing into a good hero.

Ben's not a bad guy. I mean he is the hero of the show. There are tons of scenes which show he's good , like the whole sacrificing thing so the ultimates could live and all.

But little scenes here and there tend to be enough for someone , especially for someone who isn't a super hard-core Ben lover to form negative opinions on him.

Although calling him a psychopath / narc is out of line because I don't find him to be like that. His attitude was magnified by him being in the spotlight too much and writers not having a good balance in writing situations.

Ben being the main character of the show is at risk of becoming hated or less appreciated just because he's the font runner of the show.

Admit it, side characters tend to get more love most times than the main agonist of shows.

I've been watching videos on YouTube on this topic as to why this happens , and what I've come up with is that writers of shows tend to focus too much on main character. Things seem to go their way most times and this tends to get on peoples nerves, consciously or subconsciously because it's not exactly realistic.

Having shows where everything focuses on one person most times tend to backfire.

I don't mind Ben having a big head, I dont mind him making jokes and being so casual.

It's his defense mechanism to protect himself from drowning into the struggles and pressures of being a hero. But always having him be that way isn't good.

The writers should've executed it properly.

( okay this post got really long, more than I thought it would. If you're read the whole things , congratulations on making it here lol.

I'm not going to stop anyone from replying to this because everyone has different opinions and we all have the freedom to express them.

Although I believe I've made my point and I've made sure to keep in mind all the arguments about why bashing Ben is wrong when he's not a bad guy while typing this out.

I don't think I've directed any major hate towards him , its mostly towards the writers for making the situations like that,but if you think I have you can reply to it.

Little late getting to these -- that's fully the fault of a class project I spent all of Monday/Tuesday and most of Wednesday working on -- but I finished my project and wrote up some long replies to these!

(Apologies for any funny formatting -- I'm trying out the beta for the new post editor!)

Absolutely not.

Nope! There are a few people who do know (other guides Andrew's met before, the Dryad, and I'd imagine the Witch Doctor knows something's up even if he doesn't know why), but none of them live in Purity Town proper, and the Dryad and Witch Doctor aren't the kind to participate in rumors or spread what isn't theirs to share. The old man is also aware just because he and Andrew have talked about their curses, but he's 1) not currently in town and 2) not going to share even if he were.

Most folks don't know much about Andrew in general; Becca probably knows the most out of the townsfolk, knowing a little bit about his family and where he's from (he has some pretty specific skills as a hunter that betray this, but he doesn't talk about his exact town of birth), but no specifics and certainly not time periods.

Andrew is good at keeping things quiet; he has to be.

I would actually appreciate if you didn't post to Pinterest -- usually I'm fine with people reposting with credit (several of the things I've posted to my DeviantArt have found their way to Instagram, for example) but Pinterest has something of a reputation for stolen art (things being reposted from another Pinterest post without credit this time, or credit being hard to view for users not logged in or just viewing through Google). So reposting elsewhere is fine (though if you repost to Reddit or Instagram, tag me at u/Ariibees or @Ariibees)! I'd just prefer my works stay off of Pinterest.

The terminology related to The Guide/Andrew/The Guardian/The World’s Core/The WoF is all confusing because on some level, they’re all the same being. Kind of like trying to talk about Jekyll and Hyde -- same guy, different looks/actions, haha.

For all intents and purposes, references to the WoF being the barrier/core/whatever behind or within which the spirits of light and dark are contained is equivalent to saying “these spirits are held trapped by the magic of the Guardian, who when summoned appears as the WoF.” I do break slightly from the official lore in how the WoF/Guardian/thing holding back these spirits works (mostly because I don’t really like the idea that the Hallow is a “temporary guardian” or whatever), but the basic concept of “these are trapped by [thing that makes up the WoF]” remains unchanged.

If “loony cultist” is a reference to something, I’m so sorry, but I’m lost on it. If you’re just talking about the lunatic cultist in a funny way, then yes, they’re in here as a very plot-significant character!

I had to google what meme you were talking about, but it did make me laugh.

Andrew’s most annoyed by the nickname because people do like to call him Guide, and for someone who’s dedicated his whole life to his role, it can get tiring. He doesn’t really *mind* being called Guide -- it’s fine, that’s what he is and as long as people are respectful of his job he’ll take what he can get -- but at the same time, he’d like for people to stop thinking “Aah! Monster!” or “Weird academic know-it-all” and just...treat him like a normal person sometimes. So he fights to be called Andrew. And...Malik comes along and gives him a nickname that he doesn’t like and doesn’t allow others to use, save for maybe a small group of people of which Malik is not a part. So, not cool, man!

People love to overcomplicate explaining shading/lighting, and if you wanted to you could certainly go on and on about reflections of light off the ground and shading colors and all sorts of things, but as I’m writing this at 1 AM I don’t really care to.

If you really want to get into shading, I see nice ones on DeviantArt or Tumblr from time to time, or you can always watch a YouTube video on it. Really, though, just keep at it, think about how the shadows should look and work, and you'll get better at it eventually and pick up new ideas on how it all works. (And this is coming from someone who is new to making comics and actually started as a painter.)

Purity Town’s shading comes down to this: simplicity. As much as I’d love to spend hours and hours redrawing the panels I don’t like and carefully shading every fold of fabric and painting detailed backgrounds, I’m a full-time college student and will be working full-time over the summer -- I don’t have the time. So, I cut corners: I reuse backgrounds or use brushes (see: bricks, trees, clouds) that make certain details easier, and I try not to obsess too much over panels I’m not fully happy with. Shadows go where they feel right, and light on the opposite side.

For shading, this comes down to making things quick and easy. For these last few pages, character shading/lighting has only been five layers. One hard light layer for the bluer soft shadows, one overlay layer for darker soft shadows, one linear burn layer for hard shadows, one soft light layer for soft lighting, and one overlay layer for hard lighting. I’ll often also make use of glow dodge layers for lighting, or change the color balance or add more hard/soft light layers if there’s a very heavy color filter on the scene (such as a celestial event, blood moon, or outdoors at night).

Using all the different layer types is essentially a cheat code to fancier lighting -- don’t want to use flat black? Boom, hard light or overlay or burn will give you colored shadows. Want to make your light brighter? Glow dodge will make it burn your retinas.

Sorry that this isn’t a very comprehensive guide, but in my mind, shading and lighting is really something that you pick up over time and it’s hard to sit down and write a guide for it without making it into a massive essay on art theory that I don't even know proper terminology for because I'm not an art student. Of course with some googling you’ll find *proper* guides for this sort of thing from art majors and the likes, and those can be super helpful and technical! But for Purity Town, I just sort of go with what feels right and what's easy to replicate.

Firstly, I’m happy to hear you’re liking the comic!

Secondly, those buttons are actually there due to the theme! (For those on mobile who can’t see it, I have the theme set to only display on desktop as I prefer the current mobile layout on phone.) I’m using the simple webcomic theme (a quick Google should tell you how to install it for yourself) -- except I’m not actually using it for the webcomic features; rather, it’s a case of “this is the most simple, nice-looking non-default theme I could find.”

The previous/next buttons are added by the theme with the intent that the blog is being used as a typical webcomic website, with nothing but comic pages being posted. However, I post asks and other art here too, and I do so with the intent that people looking at #Terraria or their dashboards in general will see it. So...I use html formatting to make the first/previous/next/last links, along with an index and chapter-by-chapter viewing (using /tagged/chapter##/chrono) so that no matter where you’re coming from, you can still navigate just the pages!

If you want to add just the previous/next buttons, I can’t really help you -- web development is not my area of study in the slightest. But you can check out the theme that they come from and if you want to install only them, you can surely find a tutorial on it somewhere!

(As a side note, the comments section is not from the theme, it’s from a site called Disqus. I don’t expect many people, if anyone, to leave comments, but since I link back to this site a lot and many folks don’t have Tumblr accounts, it’s an option I like to make available.)

Hiya! My hike was pretty nice; it was a short and easy one, but that was quite appreciated as the trail is unmaintained from November to April, and the trail was covered in fallen trees and quite rocky. Still had fun, though!

And for backgrounds, it depends! For indoors scenes (or outdoors scenes with buildings) I don’t tend to use references, outside of looking up things like “which side of a door is the handle on.” I will, however, integrate real-life textures (see: the quilt and rug in Guide’s house, the wood walls on the building in the background of this week’s page), and paint over paintings from the Terraria wiki.

For outdoors scenes, for simple backgrounds (such as foliage-heavy) ones, I typically don’t need references. I like the difference between detailed, lined indoor/man-made object scenes vs. painted, messy outdoor scenes. But for things like mountains, I do sometimes look up references to help with color choices and the likes.

The town’s layout is a bit strange in that depending on the scene, the background could be drastically different. One side of town faces more mountainside, one side faces the orchards/open hillside, and the other two sides face various degrees of open space and more mountainside/forest. References taken on top of mountains are helpful to get an idea of what degree of foliage I should include between the characters and the sky.

Though this is very specific to the town of Purity -- other towns/villages will have significantly different-looking backgrounds, even the foliage-heavy ones.

That said, what's even more helpful than looking at photos is looking at paintings. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is really good for getting an idea of how to draw grasslands and distant mountains, plus Studio Ghibli movies in general!

yes hello amygda i've been lurking here for quite some time and it's lovely but honestly i don't feel like saying the usual wOw YoUr BlOg Is 100% GuD and i AdOrE iT stuff. i mean your blog actually is and i do but it almost feels obligatory when every single ClasspectMe ask does that. and le oops, i spilled it - it'd be nice to hear your ideas about my Mythological Role! i've been searching for the right one for some time now. i trust your knowledge, though.

anyway personality is the first thing i want to describe. and the hardest one as well. you see, a common thing in my life is that i can't remember anything. like literally i remember less than 1% of everything that happened to me, ever. it's easier to describe what i was feeling than what actually happened. it's a genetic thing iirc because my mom has that too, but that's beside the point. i'm quite a talkative person and i tend to do the thing i did like a sentence before a lot. i used to be described as "impulsive and agressive" but that isn't true anymore, i can contain myself. that's probably the thing that led to my emotions being kind of, uh, separate from my mind. by that i mean i actually know i felt something a little bit after the fact, i just, i dunno, ignore it so hard i don't even acknowledge the feeling. that led to me joking about "selling my soul to a demon" as an explanation and the joke is still running

i kind of roleplay an arrogant piece of shit? not as a Knight-type persona but like for fun and not actually annoying anyone too much, and basically everyone knows i do. no self-worth problems though

surprisingly i don't have any problems typical for people my age and my family isn't a bunch of assholes, which has both led me to living a life in "easy mode" and to me being spoiled enough not to give a shit about basically anything. it's not a depressed thing: there are little to none things that motivate me besides "i have to" and "i'll literally die if i won't", and even the ones that exist don't seem to have any relation to one another. i'd say i'm an ambivert, but that would imply that i get energy from both being alone and from being with people, and i don't get it at all. i'd also say i'm a pessimist, but honestly i'm just an optimist that tries really hard to be pessimistic and it really shows sometimes, like when i tell my friends some edgy sarcastic shit and then help someone for no reason or give a stranger a chocolate bar or something. i do that a lot for my actual friends though and i actually have no problem making friendos and opening up to anyone

i use mutedHypocrisy as my chumhandle-ish nickname because 1. i don't really judge anyone out loud? i have are a lot of bUdDiEs with DEBATABLE opinions but i just don't discuss it almost ever, keeping to myself. not really a reason for this. and 2. because of my extremely unique memory i usually dont havr or don't remember any opinions of my own except for some really important ones, which had led me to saying two opposite takes on the same thing to a single person, them going "what the fuck", and that happened more than a single time.

on to symbols. well, the tarot cards mark me as The Star and my fate as a fate of The Fool. which is shown by me being, well, talented enough and having a lot of freedom but not enough ambition to really use it, making me basically useless. also the star thing? its number is 17 and the one before is 16, which is the Tower, which is a fucking cataclysm, and the thing is me being a few hours away from being born under "the tower" is also reflected in the situation in which i was born. i won't elaborate though cuz thats personal shit.

i guess fate kind of likes playing with me? in a friendly way. like i'm always in the best circumstances possible BUT i get trolled by luck along the way. like that friend who pranks you a lot but is actually a nice person and is fun to be around, the world around me feels, as i already said, "easy mode". a lot of people have it worse. i feel bad because i've got everything one could ever want but zero motivation and ambition to do things. and it's not even a "willpower" problem, because that thing helps me do A LOT and is the only reason i'm still functional.

i seem to have an affinity for the things i hate, even though this sounds stupid as fuck. i may despise something completely but i'll be like the meme about a guy who says "disgusting" and keeps looking anyway.

i perceive things as a play, making myself a fourth-wall-breaker type of character. i don't think i take it too seriously but that's kinda fun. i think it started when i noticed that my life and the projects i participate in have some patterns that don't change at all. it's not a thing about some situations always being the same, it's some specific things -- the beginnings and endings of ppl's relationships in the friend group, their roles there and my relationships with the people on em, for example. that's some conspiracy theorist shit right there though.

i don't think i can describe my arcs? i don't remember them. like i mean i was literally babied throughout my whole life, even if not in a way i hate or in an overbearing/limiting way. i had some anger issues and despised rules, but that's a teenager thing mostly -- i respect them now for the most part.

if there's anything important i forgot please tell me!!! can't describe my own ass right if i don't remember 95% of my life. love your work anyway.

Well, as much as it's appreciated, it's definitely not obligatory! And I hope no one feels that it is. Now, there's a few possible options. The main things to consider are Rogue or Mage of Heart and Heir or Maid of Mind, though you may also want to consider Void or Breath as the aspects.

You lack Heart in various ways, though not completely. You still try to take on various opinions or roles. This could be due to being a Rogue of Heart. Rogues tend to lack their aspects, and the taking on of opinions/roles could be stealing Heart. You do seem to focus on things like emotions and relationships, and especially your lack of motivation. Mages can also lack their aspect, but this tends to cause them to suffer - you don’t appear to focus on suffering too much, so it’s not as likely as Rogue. However, if you feel that you attempt to experience Heart to learn about it rather than simply just taking it on, then you might want to consider it.

Alternatively, you could be an Heir of Mind - this is less likely as you only seem to have focus on the roles and adaptability of Mind while you focus on many more parts of Heart. However, if you were so caught up in those things like an Heir could be, it might explain why you ignore those things and lack parts of Heart as well. A Maid is also likely to get caught up serving only particular parts of their aspect - again, this is less likely than Heir as you seem to change Mind rather than create it, but you might feel differently on this.

To decide between the Heart or Mind would depend on how you define things like your roleplay - does it feel like an exploration and taking (or experiencing) of Heart or does it feel like a changing/creating of roles which would suit Mind?

You could also consider Void if it feels like the circumstances of your life causes you to live in confusion and if it feels like your lack of memory is the main focus rather than it causing you to miss parts of Heart. Reading what you gave me it doesn’t seem to be the case, but you could decide otherwise. In a similar way, Breath could be an option if you feel disconnected from things, especially as you do focus a bit on freedom. For both of these aspects you could consider Heir, Maid or Mage as an option, especially as with Breath you’re clearly not connected to parts of it like motivation.

It’s fine! I don’t think you should be afraid to contact other people with the same interests, even if you’re just testing out the water. It’s not like anyone else would know aside from you and me and I have no reason to go around and tell people you contacted me lol But you do you, I just don’t want to be spammed with messages about “Can I send this and that in? Are requests open? What do you write for?” etc. There are links and searches and obvious announcements for that, that’s why I point out for people to just message me.

To your question, yes I write for him. Right now I don’t know if I have anything for him in my inbox but depending on how inspiring the request is, the sooner I will get to it. I don’t yandere-discriminate, everybody gets their share lol

Hmmm, I haven’t. Haven’t even heard of it in fact lol. I was super into otome games and always up to date when I was still in my apprenticeship but sadly I can barely keep up with them now >-

I still don’t really know what to think about it to be honest, I feel like yandere is somewhat related to it and yet something quite separate from it (because I’d say in 80% it is more making a reader of a placeholder character suffer and not a fictional character... Plus, actually, I feel like we enjoy the deep-sitting madness not necessarily the pain of a character) As someone not so super good at writing Angst either I just feel not related to that community at all tbh. As for comfort... I mean... I love hurt/comfort but why not let the people just like what they like... I feel like it’s brandishing them for liking something or needing comfort in their life. I got a rather negative expression though, I might be biased. Not a big fan of it, I suppose.

To the anon who asked about the limit of characters per ask. I don’t have a limit per se, but I prefer a typical layout of 3 characters for headcanons, 1 for scenarios. (Though I just write what I see fit and if it’s 4 characters sometimes I just do them, or don’t do one, just how I like at that moment) So far people have been really nice with their requests, I cannot complain at all. I don’t have a whole lot of time between work, hobbies and writing for all blogs, so I like it if I can pick a request, spend my half an hour to hour on it and put it in the queue. But if it’s like 7 characters at the time I get overwhelmed. (Also my correction program will mess up because I cannot do it in one go and have to draft asks a few times and every time I come back there’s somehow everything to correct again, super annoying...) So yeah. You may request as many times as you want of the same thing, so if you want to do me a favor, just split up the characters, that would help! ^-^

ooc, please. why do you continue to bring up Cliffjumper if you know it hurts people. i understand Starscream doesn't care. i'd wanted to *make* him care, at least a little bit, or make him understand why it shouldn't be something to brag about, but i failed, even though i've seen other anons get him upset about things using the same tactics. i'm upset and i guess i want/ed him to be too. but i can't help but feel like you don't particularly care either...

I bring up Cliffjumper because it is in character to do so, and frankly, because it’s funny. I’m assuming you’re referring to the post with the glowing blue nails and my little addition? I’m not sorry.

Let’s address your points one by one. No one will ever make Starscream care about what he did to Cliffjumper. One day he’ll probably grow bored of bragging about it, and more importantly, he’ll have other accomplishments that he’ll gain more satisfaction from, and that others will validate. But for the time being, yes, he does find it worth bragging about, because it was the last thing he did while he still had some measure of control in his life, when he led the Decepticons right before Megatron returned and undermined him as both a leader and a person once more. Is that healthy? Nnnnnnope! It’s a maladaptive coping mechanism, such as when people become compulsive hoarders after a severe loss. It’s grasping to hold onto a feeling of power or control. Yes it’s messed up. Don’t know if you noticed, but Starscream is pretty darn messed up. He does a lot of bad things and feels no remorse. He can justify nearly anything to himself, and firmly believes the ends justify whatever underhanded means he feels he must resort to.

The other anons who have upset him have brought up things he is already upset over but usually pushes deep down and doesn’t think about, like the loss of his Trine and Vos, or his broken friendship with Jetfire. Trying to get him to feel bad over something he is ok with, and especially something he’s proud of, won’t work. Getting him to sympathize with another person’s loss by comparing it to his own is a total dead end. First, he does understand how Arcee feels and thinks she’s ridiculous to be so open about it. In his world, that’s asking for people to hurt you worse. He never once spoke of any his unfathomable losses the entire time he was in the Decepticons, because he’d be eaten alive. Does he care how she feels? No, he doesn’t. People hurt each other. Enemies have no reason not to. That’s war. That’s how you win and survive. Second, as he explained when you brought up his Trine, he knows other people find the deaths of their enemies - his friends - quite satisfying, and all that does is hand him the moral high ground about Autobot hypocrisy. He’s slippery and manipulative, and will absolutely use that to deflect criticism from his own lack of remorse. Third, he’s extremely self centered and likes to wallow in self pity, and firmly (and frankly, rightly) believes other people’s losses are nothing compared to what he’s suffered. Does that mean he has the right to be an asshole about it? Of course not. He should at least find some speck of compassion even if the scale of the loss is different, but he’s not going to, because he’s a self centered asshole.

And as for me? No, I don’t particularly care about Cliffjumper or what happened to him. Sorry, I just don’t. The writers never gave me a reason to, besides telling me how I was supposed to feel. He was literally a red shirt who died to show how serious the bad guys were. I was much more excited to see a villain who didn’t waste time arguing or holding a prisoner who would be rescued, but instead took him out and moved on with his business than I was sad over some random character who I found cocky and annoying the whole five minutes he was in the show. I did feel bad for Arcee, at first, before she kept going on and on and on and on about him just as annoyingly as Starscream, but I didn’t feel bad for Cliffjumper himself. I didn’t come to care about him as a character or want to see more from him. Later, when I played Fall of Cybertron, and actually got to know CJ, I did feel kind of sad that he was killed, but not nearly as sad as I was over Breakdown, or even Dreadwing. I was slightly more sad about Cliffjumper than I was about Skyquake, which is not much. At all. Because neither of those characters was developed enough for me to see them as more than the plot devices they were. If writers tell me how to feel but don’t take the time to really sell it by showing me something about the character, I’m pretty much gonna do the opposite of what they tell me.

I do know CJ’s death hurts people, I know Starscream bragging about it hurts people, and I do care about that because I care about people. But if you follow a TFP Starscream blog that’s what you’re gonna get. No one’s forcing you or anyone else to follow me. You think I don’t know the bad treatment of a character hurts people? I love Starscream, so don’t talk to me about hurting. I’ve cried over him and lost sleep over him, and sat side by side with people who were laughing at the scenes with him that broke my heart because he was so scared and helpless and humiliated, all for laughs. I’ve had nightmares about him after I saw Predacons Rising and woken up crying. I’ve blocked more posts and blacklisted more tags than I care to count. I have unfollowed 2 blogs - one Shockwave and one Predaking - because of how casually and graphically their characters discussed murdering Starscream and I couldn’t handle it. Key word - I couldn’t handle it. So I unfollowed in order to keep myself comfortable. Did I expect them to change how they played their characters? No. It’s their blogs and they were just acting in character. It was damn good writing, as is mine.

I’m considerate of Cliffjumper fans, and I never put his name in the tags on my posts in the first 5 tags, so Starscream’s obnoxious bragging won’t show up in the Cliffjumper tag. I tag my CJ related posts “we all know what happens to redshirts”. If that’s too long or too flippant, I can add a tag for you that you can block. If what I was writing in character upset you, you could have mentioned it to me out of character and asked me to tag it. But you sent in character asks and I responded in character. You weren’t able to manipulate Starscream into feeling a certain way in order to give you some comfort, because it’s not his job to comfort you, and frankly I had no way of knowing you were actually bothered. I will always tag things when asked over IM or even an anon ask. Beyond that, I’m not changing how I run things and I make no apologies, for me or my asshole birb.
