Hello, crab fans. Wow, you have been having a busy time! On July 29, also known as Crabs Day, you took to TumblrMart to give the gift of crabs to your pals. And boy, did we notice—not just all the great crab memes and trending posts on the day but also the burst in sales which made up a substantial financial boost to the running costs at Tumblr. And it truly took our breath away.  

We got so excited we went back to the drawing board and designed some crab checkmarks, which we teased by dressing your regular checkmarks up as crabs on the day. On August 1, we launched a regular little crab checkmark and a rainbow crab checkmark for gifting and treating yourselves.

Here are some stats from Crabs Day:

You gifted 8k crabs that day. That’s an almost 20k% increase in crab sales.

We saw a more than 7k% increase in total Tumblrmart sales.

All this money goes straight back into running costs—such as a month’s worth of power costs for Tumblr application servers. That’s all you! You’re doing that! You’re keeping Tumblr around with your generosity toward your friends. Crabs be thanking ye ❤

if you don’t like the ui changes from the newest tumblr update, please consider sending in feedback asking tumblr to change this

i’m hoping that i’m not just screaming into the void.

edit: i’m also encouraging everyone to go leave tumblr a bad review, citing this change as to why. don’t make it a four star review, i recommend a one star. ALSO @wip takes asks on mondays 6am-6pm est. be polite, but clear.

everything in tumblrmart is fucking useless.

1. every badge

beyond how useless paying money for a tiny png of a checkmark is, there is also no need to pay in the first place. one can easily get the url of the image and then- wouldn’t you know it- inject it into the html of my blog theme and eaily be “verified” without paying. you can do this with whatever images you want. i did it to prove a point. you can also use html to get a gif icon btw

this only shows up on your custom theme but who give a shit

also bonus points for “tumblr supporter” being a subscription service that gets you the same shit as other badges LOL. you can also steal these and inject them into your blog

2. that one cool moon badge

yeah, love the concept, but its been done before. i posted about this when i found out about the badge, but https://www.moonconnection.com/moon_module_2.phtml allows you to easily have a similar effect with a live updating moon phases widget. that’s completely free, and doesn’t cost 6 WHOLE DOLLARS

3. ad free

yeah im not even gonna engage with this one, adblock is free, ublock origin is awesome, dont pay money for this

4. horse friend

“surely there isnt a replacement for a fully interactive virtual pet” you might say but you would be wrong. let me introduce you to GIFYPET!!!! https://gifypet.neocities.org/ has all the features you would want, as well as a fun slots minigame and it’s fully customizable, so you can put in your own custom graphics and more. there is nothing that horse friend has over gifypet, apart from poop i guess. gifypet does not have horse poop. also the horse friend only lasts for a month and is like $8

5. crabs

ok this one is the only product thats actually somewhat unique. but iirc you’re still only paying for 24 hours and can only gift it, so ymmv

but also... given the evidence that theyve given up on tumblrs upkeep entirely (the staff letter), paying for these arent even contributing to keeping the site online, so they dont even have value in the context of keeping tumblr alive. theyre already slowly pulling the plug.

dont buy this stuff.

Dear @staff ,

I must respectfully yet with restrained Millenial rage request you please put the “My Blog” button BACK at the bottom-right of the app and put the new Tumblrmart button at the top, because accidentally clicking into the Mart while trying to look at my own blog makes me actively disinclined to buy anything in the store. And I RESPECT that ya’ll need to make money! But this feels like the kind of underhanded trick other social media sites hit us with, and I am so, so irritated about it.

And it’s not even just the marketing ploy, it’s the sheer inconvenience! Before, I could switch easily from my Notifications to my Main Blog; now, my Main Blog isnt even ACCESSIBLE while I’m in Notifications, adding more clicks. You took a very convenient app and made it less convenient. I am so freaking aggravated that every time I go to look at my own dang posts, I feel like I’m barely avoiding being tricked into visiting the store, making the whole process of using the app less enjoyable. You already ate one of the prime buttons with Tumblr Live, why did you need to do THIS?

In summary, please just switch the current locations of these two buttons; the Mart would still be visible on the app, and this unnecessary annoyance would be rectified. I wish to remain respectful and reasonable because I value being polite and I appreciate a lot of things you all are doing to keep our beloved dumpster fire (affectionate) of a site funded and running, but I also confess a deep, admittedly childish desire to throw things and flail angrily.

And to show my passionate sincerity in this endeavor, yes, I AM Blazing this post because I’m so determined someone actually see this that I’m willing to throw money at it. Thank you in advance for any acknowledgment of my mightily restrained ranting.
